Could Have Been Saved

I was called down the station. They said they needed to talk. “Just a talk it will be, and then we’ll let you go.”... With a smile that is polite the cold men ushered me inside. I knew that I was weak, even better, I was a psych. I killed my own best friend, when I should’ve saved his life…

“Sit down, please.” The interrogator looked at me with a pitiful smile. My eyes locked with his and I couldn’t hold his eyes.

I sat down on the cold seat, reminded of everything that has happened the other night. “Your name is Jonghyun, but do you prefer being called anything else for short? Remember this is all about being comfortable.” And then he smiled again at me, offering sweet bars. It was a kind of him and thoughtful, but in the moment, I was in no need of sugar. I just needed a time-machine for the stupid time to rewind.

“Jjong.” My voice was a broken whisper, and I was not sure the man had listened well. Tears welled up in my eyes, as I thought of the person who called me this the most.

“Do you miss him?” The man’s question was indeed ridiculous. With silence on my part, I nodded my head at him. The man gave off a sigh and then pulled out a click-pen that was pinned to the documents before him. “Tell me about, Kibum. Have you been the last one talking to him?” And once again, I nodded.

“Can you tell me what happened?”

I can’t speak of the dead, my mother had said it was impolite. Kibum was one of the forbidden topics now, for he was lifeless, still yet to bury.

“Jjong? Is there something specific that had caused your friend to leap to his death? Was he a bullied kid? Did you know whether his parents abused him or not?”

Of course, Kibum was abused. The beating, the touching… Kibum’s been everyone’s target for as long as he lived. My very own target as well, but I rarely admitted this to myself. Kibum was a leech. He clung to my shoulder and would never cease that it has become unbearable to me.

“Jonghyun? Are you alright?” urgency filled the man’s voice, but all I could hear was Kibum’s worried and panicky voice.

‘You’re leaving me again?’ he whined as we parted ways at the school gate. ‘I’ll call you,’ I said, even though I never did.

‘You’re a liar, a cheat. You never keep a promise, and I hate you for it.’ Kibum was scowling at me but insisted to tag along to my sister’s grand birthday party, which he was not invited to.

Another time, I had slapped Kibum. I guess I did because I saw everyone else do so. I never knew it could hold such a monstrous impact on him. I was genuinely scared he might kill himself, but he didn’t, and that’s why I hit him a second.. and then a third time.

“Mr. Jonghyun, you’re spacing out again. You have to answer my question. Can you list a number of people who abused your friend, and the type of mistreat they’ve specified him with?” I nodded and watched the interrogator stick the point of his pen to the paper, ready to scribble in everything I would say..

Breathe in. Breathe out. I started giving him a list.

“Number six. Kim Jonghyun. Negligence.”
