Chapter 1

I Can't Stay Away (Hiatus)

It was the last week before school was going to start for Yuri. It also marked her last day in Japan. She had made full use of her gap year. Yuri hasn't been home for about 3 months now. She made a mental note to buy a souvenir for Yoona in every country that she had visited. The girl was the one who has been helping her out with all the admin matters regarding her university application while she was away traveling. They have been best friends since forever. Childhood friends. Yoona would have followed Yuri in her travels but she had reasons to stay in Korea. It was a different story for Yuri. After a failed relationship, she thought traveling would do her some good. Soul searching. At least that was what she told herself.

Yuri walked around the streets of Japan, soaking in as much as she could before she had to call it day. For some reason, she found herself stopping at a quaint cafe that was hidden behind a huge bakery. The cafe was tucked inside a small alley and it was the pink bike that was parked outside the cafe that caught her eye. A pretty bike with a cute picnic basket. She stood outside smiling to herself. just as Yuri was about to snap a picture of the bike just so that she could send it to Yoona when she heard the sounds of a camera's shutters. She turned her attention to the direction of the sound. Yuri found herself staring at the figure that was standing at the entrance of the alley. There was a girl that had her camera in Yuri's direction.

It wasn't until the girl lowered the camera that Yuri saw her face. For the first time in almost a year, Yuri felt her heart skip a beat.

'What a beautiful smile'

Yuri thought to herself as the girl starting to walk towards her.

'Anatawa wa Nihongo ga dekimasu ka?'

She heard the girl asking her. Yuri doesn't really understand any Japanese so she just shook her head.

'Korean'

Yuri replied pointing to herself.

She saw the girl smile.

'I'm Korean too.'

Yuri smiled at the girl. She was about to say something when a voice made her stop herself.

'Aish! There you are. Come on, we have to go. There's going to be a long queue at the restaurant if we don't get there now!'

Yuri saw a tall girl walking towards them and pulling the girl along.

'Yah. Choi Sooyoung, be a little gentle with me will ya?'

Yuri couldn't help but chuckle at the slight protest. She watched as the girl was dragged away. Their eyes met just before the girl disappeared around the corner. They shared one last parting smile. Yuri entered the cafe and got herself a cup of coffee. As she sat near the window, she couldn't help but hope that the girl would walk back down the alley.

'I can't believe we're left with just two more days. It's too short!'

Sooyoung whined. She arrived in Japan with Tiffany about a week ago and since then, the pair were joined at the hips. Sooyoung brought Tiffany everywhere and anywhere. Sooyoung knew most of the places since she had spent a few years in the area before. Her father had a short stint in Japan. She jumped at the opportunity of coming back to Japan when Tiffany suggested that they go for a trip together before they start a new chapter in their lives. They received their acceptance letters just a few weeks back and was more than happy to be attending the same university despite their different majors. Tiffany had applied for the school of design while Sooyoung opted to take the business course.

'Has she called?'

Sooyoung asked the girl that was busy looking through her camera's gallery. Tiffany answered by shaking her head. Sooyoung was surprised that Tiffany didn't make a fuss about her girlfriend not calling her. It was an unusual sight since she was sure that Tiffany would usually whine or sulk when Taeyeon didn't call or text her. The pair has been together for almost over a year and Sooyoung was sure that they were inseperable.  Sooyoung noticed how the girl was smiling. It was the same smile that she had seen back at the alley. The same smile Tiffany showed when she's captivated by something….or someone.

                                                                                              X                      X

Back in Korea, there were two figures that were sound asleep under a mess of blankets. One of the figures stirred. The blonde girl got up and stared at the sleeping figure next to her. She tried to recall what had happened the night before but her head was hurting too much. It didn't look so good since they were both and in the same bed.

'Taeyeon. Wake up. Taeyeon.'

She nudged the sleeping figure. Taeyeon slowly opened her eyes but immediately sat up after realizing her current situation. She was stark . Jessica was just as bare as she is.

No. No. No. This can't be happening.

Taeyeon cursed inside her throbbing head. The last thing she remembered was having a great time with her high school friends at a club. Jessica happened to be her high school sweetheart. Taeyeon should have known better because unfinished business and alcohol never go well together.

'Taeyeon?'

Taeyeon snapped her head back to look at the girl who was starting to get dressed.

'This was a mistake.'

The words came out of Taeyeon's mouth. Words that were so familiar to Jessica. Not because she had heard it from Taeyeon before but those were the same words she said to her college girlfriend when they broke up about a year ago.

'I know. I'm sorry'

Jessica muttered. She knew what happened between them last night shouldn't have happened. As much as she didn't have any feelings for the girl that was on the same bed as her, those four words still hurt.

'I'm sorry too.'

Taeyeon looked away. She stared at the picture that was on her bedside table. A picture of her and Tiffany. Jessica saw what Taeyeon was looking at and grabbed the last piece of her clothing off the floor.

'I should go.'

Jessica told the girl. Taeyeon didn't respond. The blonde then walked to the apartment door and starts putting on her shoes. As she walked towards the elevator, she typed in a message and sent it. She doesn't know why but even though they've broken up a long time ago, the girl was the only person that she wanted to see. The only person that she wanted to seek refuge under. A night with a Taeyeon, an old flame,  was all it took for her to realize what a big mistake she had made when she broke up with the love of her life.

Yuri, it's me. Can we talk? - Jessica
