Best Friends

12 Miracles of December

Best Friends

-----------------------------

-3rd person POV-

“Hey Lulu! Let’s go play soccer!” Xiumin shouted to his best friend, Luhan. It was a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon in early November, and Xiumin wanted to enjoy and soak up the sunlight before the cold winter weather comes and gets rid of the sunlight the sun provided.

“Okay, I’m coming!” Luhan shouted out from his open window that was on the second floor of his house. “I’ll be right down!” Hurrying down the stairs, Luhan hurriedly put on his worn-out sneakers and quickly ran to join Xiumin to go to the nearby park and play their favorite sport: soccer.

“Pass the ball over won’t you?” Luhan shouted to Xiumin. Xiumin has been kicking the soccer ball around Luhan, not letting Luhan take the ball away from him.

“No way!” Xiumin shouted back, teasing Luhan by kicking the ball near him, but taking the ball back when Luhan almost stole the black- and white-colored ball away from Xiumin.

“Minnieee~ Pass me the ball!” Luhan whined to Xiumin. “This isn’t fun...” Luhan said dejectedly, pouting at Xiumin.

“Fine,” Xiumin said grinning, finally passing the soccer ball to Luhan.

“It’s about time,” Luhan said happily, smiling at Xiumin. Receiving the ball, Luhan began to kick the ball side-to-side. Luhan then passed the ball to Xiumin, and they began a game of passing and receiving.

After an hour of competitive matches between Xiumin and Luhan, Luhan flopped down on the grass, and stared up at the clear and blue sky. “I wonder if it’ll snow this Christmas...won’t it make this year a white Christmas then?” Luhan said, grinning up at Xiumin, who was peering at Luhan up above him.

Startled from Luhan’s sudden question, Xiumin hurriedly replied a quick “yeah.” Crouching down next to Luhan, Xiumin wondered how long this relationship was going to last, since the way he felt for Luhan was probably different than Luhan’s feelings for him.

-flashback to the past (middle school)-

“Hey Xiumin, are you there?” Luhan yelled, frantically knocking on Xiumin’s front door. Please be here Minnie...I don’t know who else to ask...Luhan thought, shutting his eyes tightly and wishing that Xiumin was at home.

“What is it Lulu?” Xiumin said as he opened the door. “What do you need at this time of night...” Xiumin’s voice trailed off as he took in Luhan’s disheveled appearance. Recovering from his initial shock, Xiumin asked with concern, “What is it Lu? I’ll try to help you in any way I can, so just tell me.”

“It-It’s my late grandmother’s gift to me. The jade necklace that I told you about. I was wearing it today, but when I got home, I realized it wasn’t on me anymore. I retraced my steps and went back to the places that I was at, earlier in the day, but I still couldn’t find it. Then I went back home, wondering if I accidentally left it at home and just didn’t notice, but it wasn’t there either! I-I don’t know what to do now, Minnie,” Luhan choked out. “What do I do Minnie?” Luhan cried out, letting a stray tear slip down his cheek.

Startled from Luhan’s story, all Xiumin could do was pat Luhan’s back comfortingly. But when Xiumin saw Luhan beginning to tear up, Xiumin made his decision. “Lu, don’t worry. I will promise you that I will help you find it, so don’t cry anymore, okay?” Xiumin said, wiping away Luhan’s tear.

Luhan knew that once Xiumin makes a promise, he will fulfil it no matter what, and Luhan is very grateful for that. “Thanks Minnie,” Luhan said, calming down. “Where do you suggest we look first?”

“Hmmm...I think it would be a good idea to retrace your steps again. Having two pairs of eyes looking for it is better than one right? And you might’ve missed something, since you seemed a bit...frantic?” Xiumin said teasingly, ruffling Luhan’s hair.

“Okay, I admit that I was really...off, but why wouldn’t I be? After losing something precious to me,” Luhan pouted, defending why he acted the way he did earlier.

“I know Lu, I was just teasing you,” Xiumin chuckled at how cute Luhan was acting. “Where did you go in the afternoon, after school was over?” Xiumin asked Luhan as they were walking back to the school.

“I remember that I went to the school’s pool to practice my , since the teacher always scolded me at how sloppy they were...what? Do you think I left it at the school’s pool?” Luhan asked Xiumin in disbelief, when Xiumin turned to look at Luhan. “You know I always put it back on after I come out of the pool.”

“But you don’t know if you accidentally left it there or not, unless you check,” Xiumin said. “Let’s go check anyways,” Xiumin told Luhan, tugging him to the school’s locker room.

When they arrived in front of the boys’ locker room, Luhan couldn’t help but stare at the doors that were tightly shut. Turning to Xiumin, Luhan looked at Xiumin for an answer to this predicament. “What do we do now Minnie? The doors are locked,” Luhan said numbly.

Looking at Luhan with a mischievous glint in his eyes, Xiumin said, “Do you know how much of a troublemaker I was in the past? These locked doors are nothing!” Pulling out a thin piece of something that glittered in the light, Xiumin stuck it inside the hole of one of the doors, and began to proceed with unlocking the doors. Staring widely, Luhan couldn’t believe that he never knew this side of his best friend, and wondered what else he didn’t know.

“Got them open Lu!” Xiumin said, startling Luhan out of his thoughts. Seeing surprise written all over his best friends face, Xiumin jokingly asked, “What were you thinking about Lu? Me?”

“Of course not!” Luhan retorted sharply. “Why would you think that?”

“No need to be so harsh Lu...” Xiumin said dejectedly, looking sadly at the ground.

Seeing Xiumin’s sad face, Luhan couldn’t help but regret his stinging words that he said earlier. “Minnie, you know that I wasn’t serious with what I said right...? Anyways, let’s go look for it inside!” Luhan said, grabbing Xiumin’s hand and tugging him into the boys’ locker room.

Once inside, Luhan felt slightly unsettled, since it was dark and he couldn’t see anything. Out of nowhere, a light flashed behind him, and Luhan jumped a little. Turning around, he found out that it was just the light coming from Xiumin’s phone. “Were you surprised Lu?” Xiumin asked with a slight smirk on his face. “Don’t be scared at all okay Lu? Because I’m here,” Xiumin said, replacing his earlier smirk with a sincere smile. “Let’s go to your locker and see if it’s there,” Xiumin said, walking in the direction where he thought Luhan’s locker was.

“Um...Minnie? My locker is actually over...there,” Luhan said, pointing in the opposite direction of where Xiumin was walking towards.

Hiding his embarrassment, Xiumin quickly strided back to Luhan and walked in the direction Luhan was pointing towards. Chuckling at how adorable Xiumin was being, Luhan followed right after Xiumin to get to his locker.

After they arrived in front of Luhan’s locker, Luhan proceeded to unlock it, hoping that his precious jade necklace was inside. Hearing the click of his lock, Luhan pulled his lock off of his locker, and opened the squeaky door of the old, rusty locker. Peering inside, Luhan could barely see something glint. Waving at Xiumin to point his phone’s light to shine inside Luhan’s locker, Luhan could make out that it was actually his grandmother’s gift to him! Grabbing it from his locker, Luhan hugged it to his chest, thankful that he finally found it at last.

Turning to Xiumin, Luhan grabbed him and hugged him. “Minnie...thank you,” Luhan said, burying his face into Xiumin’s neck. “Thank you so much...I wouldn’t have found it without you so...thank you Minnie,” Luhan mumbled gratefully.

“Um...don’t mention it, I guess...” Xiumin said awkwardly, still recovering from his surprise when Luhan suddenly hugged him. Feeling warm tears sliding down his neck, all Xiumin could do at that moment was to pat his best friend’s back, trying to comfort him. Xiumin couldn’t help but feel protective over Luhan, and at that time, Xiumin promised that he would do whatever he could to prevent Luhan from crying like this again. Seeing his friend cry like this...it felt as though his heart would shatter to pieces when those soft sobs shook Luhan’s slender body. On this day, Xiumin hasn’t realized that his feeling for Luhan has changed, but he will eventually realized it...

-back to the present (3rd year of high school)-

Sigh...I finally realised my feelings, but I will never let him find out about it...who knows what my feelings will do to our relationship...Xiumin thought as he gazed at Luhan’s flawlessly beautiful face. Looking at Luhan’s face, Xiumin couldn’t help but fantasize about all the things that would never happen between Luhan and him. I wonder what it’ll feel like to hug that slender waist, stare into those sparkling eyes while I inch closer to gently press my lips against his soft and plump ones-

“Is there something on my face?” Luhan said, snapping Xiumin back to reality. Xiumin quickly turned his face away, trying to hide the blush that was slowly spreading across his face.

“Do you want to go get some ice cream? My treat,” Xiumin said as he got up from his position on the grass.

“Ice cream? Did I hear that it’s on you? Let’s go!” Luhan happily said as he got up, brushing grass off his pants.

-At the ice cream shop-

“I want vanilla bean ice cream in a cone please~” Luhan cheerfully said to Xiumin. “Can we eat it on the way to my house? Since you’re treating me to ice cream, I’ll teach you how to solve the problems you have in pre-calculus, since I heard you’ve been having trouble with them...from your mom,” Luhan said, cutely winking at Xiumin.

Wow mom. Great way to embarrass me in front of the person I like, Xiumin thought, but out loud, he said, “Okay Lu, no prob.”

“Miss, I would like vanilla bean ice cream in a cone, and cookies and cream ice cream in another please,” Xiumin said, smiling at the worker behind the counter.

“Okay, it’ll be done in just a bit,” the girl replied, flashing a cute smile at Xiumin.

After they got their ice cream cones, Luhan and Xiumin began walking to Luhan’s house, so Luhan can help Xiumin with the difficulties he’s been having in pre-calculus. “I think that girl had a thing for you,” Luhan blurted out after coming out of the ice cream shop. “Did you see how she smiled at you? I think she likes you~” Luhan teased Xiumin, nudging Xiumin’s side.

“What? No!” Xiumin said, clearly shocked. “Even if she did, I can’t accept her feelings for me, because I already have someone I like...” Xiumin trailed off, blushing slightly at what he just said.

“Who?” Luhan said, obviously surprised. Another thing that I didn’t know until now...I thought I knew Minnie better than this...Luhan thought.

“Hmm...I wonder who?” Xiumin said, avoiding Luhan’s eyes and question by his ice cream. “This is yummy~ Do you like yours?” Xiumin tilted his head adorably.

“Is it? Let me have a taste,” Luhan said, grabbing Xiumin’s hand that was holding the ice cream cone, and the cookies-and-cream-flavored ice cream.

Xiumin was startled speechless by what Luhan did, but of course, he didn’t say anything and avoided looking at Luhan directly. In return, Luhan was confused by Xiumin’s slightly cold behavior towards him. “Since you’re coming to my house to study, doesn’t this seem like a study date to you?” Luhan jokingly said, trying to lighten up the mood between them.

“Wow, lame joke Lu,” Xiumin smiled, trying to act normal.

“Hey! My jokes are pretty funny!” Luhan defended himself, but he smiled back, knowing that the tension from before was gone. “Let’s go inside,” Luhan said as they arrived to Luhan’s two-story house. “Time to help you with math!”
