Burning Hearts7.
When there was an hour left before they had to go back to the dorms, Sungmin and Kyuhyun were heading towards the former’s house.
After a while of contradictions and doubts, Sungmin had agreed to try going home – with his boyfriend as company.
Perhaps it wouldn’t be as bad as he thought. But Kyuhyun still had an undying trust for Sungmin that had him on the edge despite what came into the other’s mind.
Knocking on the door, he could feel Sungmin squeeze his hand. On the outside, it didn’t look like the kind of apartment that hid an ugly truth.
But Sungmin’s eyes expressed so, so much Kyuhyun couldn’t understand.
When steps could be heard from the other side, Sungmin let go of Kyuhyun’s hand in a quick move, and instead clasped his own arm.
He hadn’t seen his mother in seven months.
The exact time he had been together with Kyuhyun.
The door opened cautiously, and an old, worn out female face appeared in the crack. Sungmin’s expression didn’t budge, and Kyuhyun didn’t dare to move.
The door never opened fully, but as opposed to Sungmin, the maknae thought he was sensing something strange about the action.
“Mom,” Sungmin started eventually. Her small, dark eyes moved up and down Sungmin’s form, then threw a glance at Kyuhyun, then shifted her gaze back at her son.
“This is not a good time, dear.”
Her expression seemed blunt, but Kyuhyun could recognize terror anywhere. He had been seeing it on her son during the past months.
“I need to talk to you.” Sungmin stated.
“It’s not a good time.”
Kyuhyun watched his boyfriend put every ounce of courage of use to confront his mother. Trying to bring her up with him, aiming for hope.
“Mom I need to know-“
“I could-“ Kyuhyun interrupted. “I could leave if you’d prefer that, mother…”
Steps could suddenly be heard from inside. Her expression stiffened.
“That’s nice of you, Kyuhyun.” Her tone had gone down to almost a whisper. “But this isn’t really the time.”
Sungmin’s eyes radiated worry. “What is it mom? Why have you been acting like this-“
But a voice broke the gibbering. It came from inside and startled all three of them. Kyuhyun could feel his heart beating unsteadily, knowing both by the situation and Sungmin’s mother’s expression that something was completely off. Something would not end right.
“Yah what are you doing?”
“We’ll talk later, okay?”
Sungmin’s mother was on her way closing the door. Kyuhyun was frozen and didn’t know what to expect.
But Sungmin was determined.
“Mom!”
A man peeked out from the crack, and his glaring eyes were set straight onto Sungmin, who all of a sudden gulped.
Those eyes even managed to scare Kyuhyun into barely breathing.
“As your mother said, this isn’t a good time.”
He put his hand on the handle, but Sungmin didn’t remove his foot. He frowned. “I need to talk to my mom.”
No one could help but to notice that the atmosphere turned tense when the man – Sungmin’s stepfather – had appeared. But Kyuhyun wasn’t sure how he could prolong the moment unless Sungmin remained as determined as he looked.
He who had recently been just a silent watcher noted something he wasn’t pleased to see. It had been hidden just beneath the woman’s sleeve, and matched with the unfamiliarity of her face; shadows digging deeper and a slight purple color emerging, a little clearer than it’s supposed to be to be considered normal.
“Mother”, Kyuhyun exclaimed, eyes set on the few bruises accidentally emerged. He made sure not to look accusing; he wouldn’t want to seem suspicious. “Did you hurt yourself?”
That’s when he was sure that there had to be something going on.
After all those weeks, after all of Sungmin’s unconscious break downs and fighting back tears because his mother was cruel to him; there had to be something behind her actions.
Sungmin followed Kyuhyun’s gaze. His breath hitched when he noticed the bruises, which his mother was quick on hiding again.
“That’s nothing, dear.”
“But mother, you don’t look so well.”
“Mom what happened?”
Sungmin’s stepfather pursed his thick lips.
“She says it’s nothing.”
But there was something else in his eyes; apart from irritation there was a clear frustration, a flame of anger, disobedience; mostly disgust but Kyuhyun couldn’t tell in what way, yet it struck him so hard, and when those eyes buried their glance into his orbs, he found himself so sure, so sure that Sungmin’s mother never told her son the whole truth after all.
“We’ll talk later, I’ll call you, dear.”
The door swung close before Sungmin could open his mouth to retort.
The painful silence took over them before Kyuhyun had a chance to snap.
And now he looked into Sungmin’s eyes and saw everything; all his fears and theories mixed together in one single glance. The true confusion that he had spilled about earlier – the one he had kept inside for months – was fully comprehendible below his eye lashes.
And Kyuhyun understood it all.
Sungmin stared at the door.
Kyuhyun stared at Sungmin.
They didn’t say a word.
