Prologue

It's Just A Bet {DISCONTINUED}

Daehyun raced down the stairs in two-by-two’s, almost tripping a couple of times in the process. The tail of his button down uniform loosely untucked, his velvety black blazer slung over his right shoulder and his newly dyed brown hair still sticking out in odd angles. It was the first day of the school year and he was late. Wonderful.

“Morning mom!” he greeted hurriedly as he straightened down his attire and struggled to pull up his red tie with thin, golden linings stitched over it.

“How is it that you were always the first one up during the school’s end of the year break, but the one who oversleeps on the first day of school?” Mrs. Jung shook her head in amusement as she came to her clearly irritated son’s aid.

Mrs. Jung was a petite, but strong woman in her mid-forties. Her bright personality and optimistic point of view had always been something Daehyun admired greatly. She was the kind of mom that preferred teasing and joking with her children much rather than being the strict dragon-lady they would’ve feared.

Well, Daehyun had to inherit his sense of humor from someone.

“Done,” she chuckled as she brushed off invisible lint on her frazzled son’s uniform. “You might want to style your hair a bit first before you head off with your friends though,” she advised with laughter in her voice as she handed Daehyun a bright red apple for him to eat on the way to school.

Daehyun’s eyes widened in realization. “Thanks, mom! Wouldn’t want to look bad on my first day. I’ve got a reputation to keep, after all,” he winked with a smile of mischief playing across his face.

“If only those poor fangirls saw how much of a mother’s boy you are.”

“I’m sure that’ll make me even more attractive, mom,” he called out and headed to the door.

By the time he had double locked the front gate, the rest of B.A.P had already walked off without him, their tall figures one or two blocks away from him. Daehyun had to jog a bit (without messing up his hair and uniform, of course) in order to keep up with the others.

“Couldn’t have you guys waited for just another minute?” he whined as soon as he fell into step with them.

“We didn’t want to be late,” Yongguk, the eldest of the six simply shrugged.

“So you rather I face those fans by myself?” Daehyun faked an accusing look at his life-long friends.

            They all agreed in unison.

“Daehyun,” his closest friend Youngjae raised an eyebrow at him. “You should be more worried about the angry teachers that’ll be looking for you after they find out about the prank you pulled on them.”

Daehyun couldn’t help but let a laugh escape past his full lips.

You see, Daehyun wasn’t only known in the school for being good looking or being part of B.A.P. He was also well known for his pranks. Very well known.

This year, Daehyun had decided it’d be fun to coat the teacher’s desk placed in every classroom with flour. It wasn’t an amateur prank but at the same time, it wasn’t as though it was something Daehyun would get in trouble because of. Those were the kind of pranks Daehyun pulled. Harmless, but hilarious ones. Enough to earn him the reputation as the class clown but safe enough not to be accused as a troublemaker.

“I’ll be sure to inform a janitor to clean up after the first period,”Yongguk – the student council president, sighed wearily but his gummy smile never once left his face. He was used to Daehyun’s antics by then.

“I just hope none of the flour gets onto me or my precious fans,”Himchan pouted slightly.

Himchan was the ‘ulzzang’ amongst all of them. He was the type of person that girls would stop and take not only a second look, but at least a forth or fifth. He was an ordinary nineteen-year-old boy, really. A nineteen-year-old boy who looks like he belonged in a boy band not a school, that is. His looks, to everyone’s surprise, were natural. The only thing he ever did alter was his hair color. He would dye it a different color every once in a while. It was a B.A.P thing.

And to add into all of that, he was the greasiest boy in school. The type that wouldn’t mind having tons of girls surrounding him. He was the type of person that would definitely help out a beautiful girl when he saw one. The students even give him a nickname – ‘Campus Celebrity’.

“But what if cleaning the tables disrupts the next lesson!” Youngjae suddenly had a look of alarm on his face.

“I don’t see anyone else complaining,” star-athlete Jongup shrugged.

“I guess you’ll just have to deal with it,” Zelo, the youngest, chipped in, his dyed gray hair (that oddly suited him) glimmered under the Seoul sunlight.

* * *

“There they are! There they are!”

“Is it me or have they gotten even more good looking?”

“Oh my gosh I think he’s looking our way. Be cool you guys, be cool.”

Not-so hushed whispers erupted through the hallways as soon as B.A.P walked in, not that it was anything new. From the 1st graders, all the way to the 3rd graders, practically each and every girl in school could only hope to stand a chance with these boys. They were the ideal type of every girl, and the envy of every boy.

Zelo, even though he was only in the 2nd grade, greeted everyone that he saw. By name. He was what the teacher’s called an ‘all rounder’. Someone that fitted in perfectly fine no matter where he went. Zelo even volunteered to help out during the 1stgrade students’ orientation day, just so he could get to know all the newbie’s before the school year begun. So by the time the first day of school came around, he was friends with everyone. Or so he thought.

“How are you Hyunsh-” Zelo was cut off in mid sentence when a short figure of a girl accidentally bumped into him. She was so short her head had only reached his chest.

“S-sorry!” she bent over to a 90 degree bow, her curly hair that was tinted magenta was used as a shield to cover her blushing face. She was wearing a pale gray tie so that meant she was in the 1st grade, and that she was new.

Zelo let out a lighthearted chuckle, causing the dimple on his right cheek to show just a bit. “It’s alright,” he brushed it off. “Hey, I don’t think I saw you during the orientation. I was helpi-” he started but stopped when he realized she was already speed walking her way to her classroom.

“I’m Zelo, by the way!” he called out, hoping she heard him. He couldn’t help but let a lopsided smile spread onto his square-like jaw as he watched her try to get pass the sea of students with a huge stack of books in her arms and her backpack hanging loosely on her shoulders.

* * *

“Hi-himchan oppa,” a 2nd grader blushed profusely as she offered Himchan a bright pink lunch box with a teddy bear printed on its cover with shaky hands. “I made lunch for you.”

“Thank you,” he smiled charmingly in reply and took it from her, purposely brushing his fingers onto hers a bit in the process. “I’ll make sure to eat this well.”

The poor girl bowed deeply with a huge grin on her face and then went back to her lunch table where her friends secretly watched the entire scene from, her face growing hotter by the second.

“Flirt,” Jongup, who sat right beside Himchan, stated.

“But did you see her face, though?” Himchan threw his head back in laughter. “You have to admit that was amusing.”

            “But-“

“I mean come on. We’re popular, we’re gorgeous, we’re talented and all the girls are practically waiting in line to date us. We can get any girl we want no problem at all,” he smirked triumphantly.

“You’re so cocky it’s actually annoying,” Daehyun rolled his eyes but laughed.

“Are you sure you can get any girl we want?” Youngjae asked with a challenging smirk to match Himchan’s.

            “Definitely!”

“So it’s a bet then?” Zelo tilted his head in curiosity.

“But if it’s just me, where’s the fun in that?” Himchan mused and suddenly a thought came into his mind. “I know! How about we all do it.”

            “I don’t know, Himchan..”Yongguk began.

“Aww come on hyung, it’ll be fun!” Daehyun, who was just as playful as Himchan was, cajoled. It took a while but Yongguk eventually decided to join in.

“But who do we court? And what are the rules?” Youngjae’s skeptical side came to life.

“How about we pick for each other?” Jongup raised his hand and asked. He smiled proudly at himself for what he had just said.

An ecstatic Daehyun began to scan the entire cafeteria to look for who he had in mind. “Her!” he semi-screamed and jabbed a finger at the direction of who he was talking about.

“Jan Yun Ji?” the other five said all at once. They’re eyes were wide enough to actually pop out of their sockets.

            Jan Yun Ji.

That name sent shivers down everyone’s spine when in earshot. She was the school’s Queen Bee. Her appearance itself could intimidate the entire female student body. With her sleek brown hair, striking features and coats of makeup, like Himchan, she too looked like she belonged on the cover of a fashion magazine. She uniform was always too tight and too short in order to show off her voluptuous figure.

She was known for her cut-throat and snarky words that could cause even a teacher to break down and cry. She was only ‘nice’ to her exclusive group of friends. It was needless to say that she was someone nobody had dared to mess with.

             Let alone date.

“Yongguk hyung, I want you to court her!” he giggled gleefully, earning a dirty look from Yongguk, but high-fives and pats on the shoulder from the others.

“Oh yeah?” Yongguk growled. “Daehyun has to court Tae Jin!” he smirked victoriously as he knew he had gotten his revenge.

Daehyun’s face paled. “TaeJin?” he repeated. “As in, high-strung, no fun and games, student council vice president Park Tae Jin?” the pitch of his voice grew higher and higher with every word he said.

            “That’s the one.”

Daehyun let out a loud groan in anguish. By then, B.A.P was already having a field day. Tears from laughing had formed in their eyes as they clutched their stomachs whilst chortling. Zelo even fell off his seat and ended up crouching onto the cafeteria floor laughing. They couldn’t care less about what everyone else thought of them.

“My turn! My turn!” Youngjae bounced on the spot like a child.

“Jonguppie, I’m really sorry about this,” he began and Jongup gulped in nervousness. “You have to go after,” he paused for effect and suspense, “Je Neul.”

“What?” Himchan shouted before Jongup could even react.

“And why are you so worked up?” Youngjae’s eyebrows pinched in confusion.

“Because I wanted you to court her ..”

“Too bad then,” Youngjae stuck his tongue out. “Jongup has to court the school’s badass.”

“But she barely even shows up to school ..” Jongup complained quietly.

“Don’t worry, Jongup. I’ll help you get your revenge,” Himchan patted his shoulder in assurance. “Youngjae, you have to get Eun Bin to date you.”

“But she hates me!” Youngjae shot back in an instant.

            “Exactly.”

“Come on, hyung. Yongguk got Yun Ji who is stunning, Daehyun got Tae Jin who is well, the perfect student, even Je Neul, who Jongup has to court, is hot. And me? I got the school’s biggest nerd. She doesn’t even care about her looks or co-curriculum. It’s always just study, study, study. Plus, she hates me!” Youngjae complained in desperation.

“She only hates you ‘cause you beat her in all her studies,”Jongup shrugged.

            “But still!”

“Okay, okay, okay. Now it’s my turn!” the ‘maknae’ Zelo broke off the argument. “Himchan hyung,” he his chin thoughtfully. “Himchan hyung should court JeeSun noona,” Zelo turned to the older ones for approval.

“Who?” Himchan asked. He had never heard of anyone with that name before.

“Lee Jee Sun noona,” Zelo repeated himself. “She’s my neighbor and she once mentioned that she doesn’t like being under the spotlight.”

“Um, Zelo,” Yongguk took a bite out of his lunch that was growing cold. “What are you implying?”

“I mean, that she’ll do everything that she can to avoid Himchan hyung because he’s the ‘Campus Celebrity’,” Zelo emphasized on his last two words to add on to what he was saying.

“That’s brilliant!” Jongup clapped. “And finally, I get to decide who you have to go after, Junhong.”

Junhong was Zelo’s real name but somewhere along the lines of puberty, he decided to go by the name of Zelo. It suited him, anyways, even his own parents thought so as well.

“Zelo, do you remember that 1st grade girl that ran into you earlier today?” he asked and Zelo nodded in reply, his shaggy hair bobbed up and down in the process. “Well, since she is the only student you haven’t spoken to, I guess you’ll have to court her.”

“What are the rules?”Youngjae demanded impatiently, cutting off Zelo who barely opened his mouth to react.

“Easy. Date the girl for two months, then break her heart. As cold and as hurtful as we can.” Himchan crossed his arms to his chest and smirked. He hated to admit it, but he actually was looking forward to breaking someone’s heart. And he knew that deep down, the other’s felt the same way.

            “That’s it?” Daehyun pondered.

“It’s just a bet, what could go wrong?”
