Chapter Three
Thistle
The next morning Amber was shocked to find LuHan at her door, but over the next few weeks it became a regular thing. He would stop by Grandma's house in the late morning and they would go wander around the small town all day long. Amber taught LuHan how to skateboard and he in turn taught her the rules of soccer and several tricks as to playing it. He introduced her to his friends there, and while they were friendly enough they didn't really seem to care to get to know her. LuHan, on the other hand...
It was as if she'd known him forever. Their friendship became easy, talking and laughing and even having the quiet spaces where no words were needed to fill the comfortable silence. It was all just easy... and that worried Amber.
Her friendship with Henry had ben easy, too. Maybe too easy in that he had become so comfortable with her so as to see her as just 'one of the guys'. It had broken her heart and she was trying so hard now to be tough, and so despite LuHan's kindness and cuteness Amber resolved to not let herself fall for him. It would only end badly for her, she told herself, and kept that arm's distance despite his friendliness.
One morning in early July Amber woke to the sound of someone knocking on the door. It was still dark outside and she hated being woken so early, but she had at least learned her lesson with Victoria and checked the mirror to straighten her hair, throwing on a robe as she headed for the door. A bright and cheery eyed LuHan stood there, backpack slung over his shoulder and a mischievous grin on his face.
"Don't you look like a princess in the morning," he teased, and Amber glared at him as the comment unknowingly stomped a little harder on her (nonexisting) crush (that she denied having) on LuHan.
"It's dark. It doesn't count as morning." She grumbled, but let the tall boy in anyway, a smidgen of curiousity overcoming her as she noted the jeans and boots he was wearing instead of his usual shorts and tennies. He moved past her and into the kitchen to go straight to the fridge and scavenge for something to eat. Amber rolled her eyes as she observed him; typical teenage boy, always starving.
