28. Second chances

7 hours from home, next door to heart (in the process of editing)

The mood was glum amongst the three of them as they sat in the restaurant. Maddy did her best to lighten the atmosphere with funny stories from happenings of the day to alleviate the gloom and the rather average cooked food; but even then they all held the dark cloud around their head with a tight grip. Hyung Jun was feeling the worst of it. It was understandable, he had more reason to.

They came back to their apartments slightly better than they had arrived. They all bowed to Maddy alarming her, “w-what are you all doing?”

“We’re sorry we weren’t much fun tonight,” Kibum expressed to her their backs still bent. Maddy waved a hand, “don’t be. Everyone has their down days; it’s a matter of not letting it control your mood for more than a day.” They all nodded their faces brightening a bit after that.

“You know,” Jungmin scratched the back of his neck, “you are like…The sun.” Hyung Jun had to bite his lips to stop himself from exclaiming. “W-what are you saying?!” Kibum asked him.

“She’s so bright and warm and…” Jungmin finally saw where he was going with this, “umm… As a chingu by the way.”

“Aw that’s still rather sweet of you,” Maddy gave him a hug. Kibum’s eyes went to Hyung Jun who stood composed, however his fist was almost starting to clench out of jealousy.

“Well,” Maddy came over to Kibum and hugged him, “good night. I’ll see you tomorrow at nine thirty in the morning.” Kibum nodded as Hyung Jun began to unlock their door.

“Night~,” Jungmin sang as Kibum pushed him in to avoid further embarrassment. It was just Hyung Jun and Maddy left.

“Well,” Maddy came up to him to hug him too, “night Hyung Jun.” Hyung Jun began to return the hug. He didn’t feel like letting go. Maddy didn’t seem to notice what was happening, “oh yeah,” she released the hug, “about what I did… Sorry if I said something silly or bad. I don’t always know what I mean when I’m barely awake,” her cheeks were starting to redden her gaze downcast. Hyung Jun looked down at his hands; they were tingling, “Maddy…”

“—Ah what am I saying,” she patted her cheeks, “good night Hyung Jun. You should get some sleep too.” Hyung Jun lifted his head, “mm. Good night Maddy.” They said no more and went their separate ways.

***

Hyung Jun woke at eight thirty to get ready. He was in the shower and then dressed just as Jungmin and Kibum slowly got up. Kibum rubbed his eyes as he joined Hyung Jun in the bathroom, “hyung… It’s a Sunday morning.”

“Did you forget?” Hyung Jun checked his hair while peering in the mirror. His brother looked back at him drowsily, “we’re going to church with Maddy today.”

“Oh,” Kibum glanced around the door to look at the clock, “is Jungmin-ah going to come?”

“I don’t know,” Hyung Jun did the clasp on his watch, “he has half an hour to be ready.”

“Why didn’t you say so sooner hyung?” Kibum left the bathroom and came back with a pile of clothes, “move hyung.”

“But I’m not don….Yah what are you doing?!” Kibum had removed his wife beater off and was standing shirtless, “I need a shower.”

“But I’m still here,” Hyung Jun protested as his brother went for the waist band of his pajama pants, “OK I’m going.” He stepped out closing the door behind him. A moment later there was a click as Kibum locked it. A few minutes before nine thirty they stepped outside of their apartment just as Maddy was leaving hers.

“Good morning,” she said smiling. She looked pretty in her baby blue knee length skirt, her light peach long sleeved shirt with a white scarf.

“Morning,” Kibum said elbowing Hyung Jun when she wasn’t looking. Hyung Jun glared at him. She noticed that Jungmin wasn’t with them, “where’s Jungmin?”

“Sleeping,” Kibum shrugged, “what can we say?” She nodded as her phone beeped, “that must be KyuYang,” she took her phone out to check it. “We should go,” they nodded as they followed her to their ride. KyuYang waved to them as they got in and were off.

***

They drove down the road through the town passing houses. They stopped at a rather large building where people were starting to enter.

“Is this it?” The Kim brothers were amazed at how big it was.

“Yes, it’s grown in the past year,” Maddy admitted as KyuYang opened the door for them.

“See you at twelve,” KyuYang said to the Kim brothers in Korean.

“Thanks,” as the car drove off, Maddy took Hyung Jun’s hand and began to pull him towards the church.

“W-wow,” the two were alarmed at how big it was inside.

“Come on, don’t be shy,” Maddy teased as they went up the stairs to the doors; a middle aged couple were there with flyers, ushering for them

“Maddy, good morning,” they said when she came and hugged them each.

“Hello Paul and Sandra,” Maddy said to them, “these are friends of mine um….”

“Hyung Jun,” Hyung Jun said with some regret that he didn’t have an English name.

“And Allen,” Kibum seemed smug as he shook hands with Paul.

“Welcome,” Paul told them, “enjoy your time.” Maddy led them inside and they found some seats in the fourth row from the back. Everyone was talking loudly as some people got onto the stage.

***

The music began a few minutes later. Hyung Jun and Kibum just clapped along because they weren’t too familiar with the music while Maddy sang happily along. Someone came up on the stage to say what was happening at the church. After the announcements they began to play some slow music where people raised their hands and had their eyes closed. Hyung Jun wasn’t quite sure what to do so it was a surprise when he saw Kibum with his hands raised. The music was peaceful though and it touched him in some manner.

The lead singer introduced the pastor who came to the front and stood below the stage with a pull pit. Maddy sat patiently listening, Hyung Jun tried not to fiddle. Kibum sat next to him taking notes on his phone in Hangul which meant Hyung Jun was able to get an idea of what the pastor was saying. When the pastor was finished with his message they were asked to bow their heads and pray. Hyung Jun had no idea what to say in his head.

God…..Why did I have to see my father again? Why did he have to leave the way he did? Help me?

“So,” Maddy began as they walked down the stairs to where the car was waiting, “how did you find it?”

“Umm….”

“Good,” Kibum said smiling, “what’s that word umm…Refreshing?” Maddy laughed at his cute Engrish. Hyung Jun wished that deep down he had a better answer.

“Oh my gosh,” the three of them stopped.

“I-Is that….” The girl rubbed her eyes, “no way…”

“Wow looks like that guy from that Asian group you like.”

“Which one do you mean?”

“Uh oh,” Hyung Jun grabbed Maddy’s arm taking faster steps to the car.

“Wait why are you--?”

“Hey hyung I wonder if they like me.”

“No time,” Hyung Jun opened the door before KyuYang got out of the car. Maddy got in and the Kibum pulled his brother to the door.

“Hi,” Kibum waved while the two girls stood there amazed. Hyung Jung got him in and closed the door behind him. “Phew that was close.”

“Were you spotted by a fan?” KyuYang asked.

“No….” KyuYang started to chuckle with Kibum laughing with him.

“What’s funny?” Maddy asked innocently.

“Oh KyuYang’s just being silly,” Kibum said poking Hyung Jun. His brother nearly punched him if Kibum hadn’t ducked.

“Now behave,” KyuYang told them, “you are with a lady.” The Kim brothers glanced at Maddy. They relaxed, “alright,” they said watching the scenery fly past.

***

“Hey this isn’t…“ They pulled into a car park. It was at a park by the beach. There was a small playground where some kids were running around, a bench stood alone looking over at the waves.

“Sorry guys,” KyuYang apologized, “I have to stop here for a bit, “why don’t you have a walk?” Hyung Jun turned to Kibum and Maddy. They both shrugged neither of them knowing what to do. Hyung Jun pushed down on the handle letting them out. They stretched their legs taking in the fresh air. Someone walked towards the bench, from a distance it was hard to distinguish who it was. But when they came closer the Kim brothers got a sinking feeling in their stomachs. They looked at Maddy.

“We’ll be right back,” Hyung Jun touched her arm to reassure her that this was certain. She waited by the car. KyuYang got out too stretching his legs. He was rather tall next to Maddy who was only about five feet eight.

“Appa,” Hyung Jun said as they bowed to each other. Kibum kept his head down.

“Look your father in the eyes,” the stranger snapped and Kibum did but they were full of hurt. Hyung Jun looked at Kibum with empathy. He hadn’t met him yet, it had just been him and even then he had stormed off. Their father seemed to have remorse for what he had said, “Please take a seat.” They sat down at the bench.

“Why are you here?” Hyung Jun questioned him.

“Because I knew if I didn’t speak to you now it may be the last time that I get to.” Kibum held his hands tightly together.

“I know you two must hate me for leaving you like that,” he began, “My reason was selfish and cowardly. You know why don’t you?” They nodded.

“We read your letter,” Kibum said bitter.

“I’m not here because I want you two to forgive me,” their father added, “asking for that would be too greedy. Instead this is what I’m saying to you two,” he took out a piece of paper, on it was a string of numbers and an address.

“This is how you can contact me,” he began, “I also have an address in Icheon but at the moment it’s too complicated for me to move back yet…” He phrased this with caution but ended up adding, “Marco doesn’t know Korean well enough.” The name made Hyung Jun and Kibum wince inwardly. It might have been better that they didn’t know him.

“I hope that when you two are ready,” their father swallowed his voice tight, “that you two will get in touch with me again.” For a moment the Kim brothers were silent, neither of them could say anything. They just sat, silent and hearts heavy. Hyung Jun looked at his brother; Kibum had tears rising to the surface.

“Hyung,” Kibum turned to Hyung Jun, his eyes b more which began to cause a mirror effect in Hyung Jun, “you’ve been like my father for so long….” He bit his lips, his eyes blurring. “You’ve always looked out for me...” His sniffed, “but I know how hard it was for you,” a tear fell, “trying to be a hyung and a dad while pursuing music.” Hyung Jun had to turn away because it was becoming too much. Their father had glistening eyes too.

“Hyung,” Kibum was starting to cry, “We should at least give him another chance… So you can rest… I don’t need any more protection I’m old enough to—“

“—Rubbish!” Hyung Jun’s voice broke, “you’ve always been careless with what you say,” he took in and out a shuddering breath, “e-even when you’re eighty and I’m eighty three I’ll still be watching over you whether he’s there or not!” Hyung Jun looked at his father who was crying too, “h-how do I know that you will do your job?!” Tears ran down his father’s face. Back with KyuYang Maddy was wiping the corners of her eyes while KyuYang patted her on her shoulder.

“I’m sorry I won’t be close by,” their father said guilt ridden, “but I wanted to see my sons again even if it would not be for a while.” The two brothers were crying heavily now.

“Hyung,” Kibum wailed, “please….I know you were hurt the most by appa…” He had to pause, “b-but I know that you love him deep down! Please hyung!”

“A-alright,” Hyung Jun rubbed Kibum on the back, “I’ll forgive you!”

“T-thank you,” their father bowed his head in teary relief.

“But it doesn’t mean things are good with us just yet,” Hyung Jun added wiping his eyes, “we’ll give you…I will give you another chance, but screw it up and…” He lost what he was going to say in the wave of emotions. Their father reached into their pocket and took out two small boxes.

“Please have these,” he gave one to them each. It was jewelry, rectangular white gold pendant with Hangul written on them.

“What does yours say?” Hyung Jun asked Kibum.

“Kibum-ah,” Kibum read, “always be fun and full of laughter.” He looked at his hyung signaling that it was his turn.

“Hyung Jun,” he began, “thank you for watching over him.” Hyung Jun lowered it down, his eyes tearing, “a-appa I…”

“If you can accept these then I will know that you really have forgiven me,” their father wiped his eyes. Kibum and Hyung Jun turned to the other. Kibum nodded.

“Thank you,” Hyung Jun said as they put the boxes in their pockets. Their father rose to come over to them. They all stood up as their father opened his arms. They slowly came to him, joining him in a group hug. Maddy had tears streaming down her cheeks as she watched them.

“My sons,” he patted them on the back, “I’m so thankful that I was able to reach you like this. Thank Jungmin-ah for me.”

“Oh we will,” in other words they were going to beat the crap out of him.

***

“Hyung Jun,” his father called to him after they had already said their parting words. He waited for his father to come beside him.

“Yes father,” the word ‘father’ was easier to say now than it had been before.

“That girl,” he was referring to Maddy who was talking to Kibum and then wrapped her arms around him in a congratulatory hug, “what’s your relationship with her?”

“We’re just friends,” this drew a smile to Hyung Jun’s face, “and I may have feelings for her.”

“I see,” his dad nodded, “that’s good.” Hyung Jun stared at his dad perplexed. “You two are from different walks of life. What’s going to happen when you go home? Will she wait forever for you to come back and see her? For famous people love is a harder task. Surely you know that from other’s experiences.” Hyung Jun could only nod. He knew too well how his fans would feel if the news about him in a relationship came out. And his father was right about the different lives and the distance.

“But,” he added to his answer, “I would try and make it last… No matter how hard it would be,” his smile returned, “because somehow… The last few weeks having her close by, next door… She’s helped me feel normal. Like I’m just a person, not someone famous who has to sit on stage and sing while people scream at them. I can be like my fans who love me, but I wouldn’t have to share her.”

***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

And now they know where they stand with their father. I shouldn’t pick on Jungmin but otherwise he wouldn’t have appeared in this chapter >_>. Well this fanfic may have only two or three chapters left. I feel kind of sad (I feel sad when I end any of my fanfics). I was going to give up on this one but then I felt like I would be letting down all the triple S’ on here. SS501 are and always will be a group I love and it’s like they’re almost always in another group’s shadow. So Triple S’ this is for you xxx.
