For Heaven's Sake, Hit the Brake

By the time Tao was out the door, hastily finding his keys, Sehun had swiped them out of his hand.

"Sehun, no, what are you--"

"You're not loner-ing today, you're coming with us all in Chanyeol's car," Sehun put firmly like a scolding mother.

"That's not even a word. You know I always travel by bike," Tao added quietly, hoping to earn some sympathy.

It was without luck, "No. You won't suffer from some human interaction," and ended his statement by pulling Tao out the door with him.

Truthfully, Tao could totally take him down if he wanted to. But there was a teeny voice in his head, quietly saying at least this would get his mind off his sudden somber state. He still wasn't sure what was the cause, he was used to people using him for what they needed. Kris was no different, yet, Tao couldn't help but feel that maybe the reason he was so gloomy wasn't because he was used, but because he missed the awkward, Adonis-like giant.

"Stop," Sehun whined oncek they were buckled up, "It's not like you have problems."

Tao held in the desire to snort.

"My roommate is coming and I'm freaking out. His name isn't Jongin, by the way. His name is I'm-better-than-Sehun-in-everyway-imaginable."

Tao simply rolled his eyes and shook his head, an amused smile playing on his lips.

"I hear he's entering a dance competition," piped Jongdae from the front seat.

"His limbs were blessed by the divine gods of dance," Sehun moaned woefully, "When he gets dressed it's like watching dancing with the stars."

Chanyeol snorted from where he was driving, "I'm imagining him doing the tango with his shirt."

Tao remained quiet as the rest talked on about Sehun's talented roommate, opting to stare out the window to be with his thoughts.

By the time they arrived at the restaurant, Tao was happy to leave the confined space of the car and stretch out his limbs.

After they had entered and were seated, they casually looked at the menu, Baekhyun complaining that everything looked good.

They finally ordered, sipping at their waters, and a silence fell over them.

"So when does Sir Dancealot get here?" Jongdae asked.

Sehun checked his phone, "He said he'd be here."

"Maybe he realized you're a weirdo and stayed home," Tao teased.

Sehun huffed, "This is the thanks I get for being selfless and keeping you away from the clouds of woe by inviting you?"

"Clouds of woe?" Jongdae asked, interest piqued as he sipped his drink.

"Tao is in need of a love doctor."

Tao choked on his drink, coughing harshly and looking at Sehun incredulously, "What the hell."

Sehun waved a dismissive hand, "Tao here is suffering from blue ball blues. He's been unhappy lately and I deduced it was because he hasn't spent time with this Kris guy."

"Wait, you guys are dating?" Chanyeol practically shouted, garnering attention from other patrons.

Tao shook his head, "Sehun is stupid and doesn't know what he's talking about!" he hissed, glaring at Sehun.

"They were once upon a time very happy with each other on their two-wheeled carriage," Sehun continued, "Kris almost gave him a one time!"

Baekhyun screamed and Chanyeol was still looking skeptical.

"He was tying my shoe!"

"Not from my perspective, I was there, remember?" Sehun added with a wink and Tao was sure there was nothing he would want to do more than punch Sehun in the face.

Baekhyun was so curious Tao was forced to explain the situation to keep any misunderstandings from happening.

However, as he was in mid-sentence, Baekhyun grabbed Sehun's shoulder and pointed at the door, "Isn't that Jogin?"

"You mean, I'm-better-than-Sehun-in-everyway-imaginable," Chanyeol added, before Sehun slapped his arm.

Tao looked up curiously, and could see what Sehun was talking about. Jongin sauntered over, his body had a lazy grace the way his legs moved as he walked looked so confident and sure.

"Hi, Sehun." his voice was deeper than Tao had thought, "Nice to meet you all," he said bowing slightly to everyone.

"No need to be so polite take a seat," Sehun gestured to the empty chair next to him. Tao bit his lip from snickering, Sehun was never this composed and nice.

"I invited a friend," he said as he got into his chair, "Hope that's all right."

"The more the merrier," Sehun chirruped. Tao had never seen Sehun, annoy whiny Sehun, so obliviously love struck.

"Who did you invite?" ask Jongdae, examining Jongin's low cut shirt with and admiring the tan chest unabashedly.

"His name is Yixing, he and I are in a dance competition and we are helping each other out," he smiled.

Tao furrowed his eyebrows, the name sounding familiar but he couldn't remember.

"Speak of the devil," Jongin said as a cute guy with light brown hair walked in, followers by a few others.

Tao's eyes widened. Zhang Yixing. Kris's forgetful dancer friend. His throat closed as he was sure the tall friend behind him was Kris.

"!" he whispered before pushing Sehun's chair away and crawling under the table.

Everyone's eyes were where Tao had disappeared underneath, "What are you doing?" Sehun hissed.

"Kris is here!" he hissed back, and moved towards Chanyeol and used his long legs to hide himself.

He yelped, earning Yixing's attention as well as Kris and Luhan.

Yixing waved before making his way toward him, the other two in tow.

"Hi, everyone," he smiled, dimples showing and Jongdae remarked he's never seen holes that big on a person's face except for Chanyeol when he's eating.

Chanyeol didn't hear though because he was busy ducking under the table and asking Tao what the hell was going on.

"This is Luhan and Kris," he introduced to the group and Baekhyun suddenly understood the situation.

"You should sit across from me, Kris," Baekhyun suggested to Tao's empty seat.

Kris nodded and took the seat, while Tao pinched Baekhyun's calf, earning a yelp.

"Are you ok?" Kris asked when Baekhyun whined, but the latter just waved a hand dismissively.

Kris sat next to Sehun, and he remembered the pink haired male was great friends with Tao. He had not seen him in the last few weeks and apparently it was showing because it was Yixing and Luhan's idea to invite him so he could distract his mind.

Jongdae took the opportunity to meddle--exactly what he was great at.

"So Kris, I don't think we've met before, not formally anyways. Tell me about yourself."

"I'm a vet major, and I'm here because Luhan and Yixing dragged me here."

"Oh please, don't complain. You had fun nearly getting us killed in your motorcycle on the way here."

"Motorcycles aren't meant for three people."

"When did you get a bike?" Chanyeol asked.

"Tao gave it to me, apparently someone gave it away."

Tao, still hiding under the table, could hear Kris say his name and he couldn't help but admit he missed they way it sounded in his voice.

"That someone was me," Chanyeol said, glancing down at the table, "So that's why Tao wanted it."

"He was teaching me how to ride, I get it now. It's been awhile since I've seen him but I guess he's just busy," Tao was sure he just imagined the sadness in his tone.

Sehun snorted, "Yeah, busy." Tao punched Sehun's shin.

Jongdae smirked, "Tao said he missed you."

Kris's eyebrows furrowed, "Really?" and Jongdae had to admit that he felt a pang if sympathy for the hope in his voice.

"Yeah, I saw him the other day and he wouldn't stop talking about you," he continued, lying smoothly.

Tao felt his face heat up in anger and embarrassment, crawling over people's feet to pull on Jongdae's leg. However the unexpected happened.

He pulled too hard, causing Jongdae to slip out of his chair and the chair to fall on the floor with a loud crash, metal ringing after hitting the cool laminate.

The table fell silent and Kris, Luhan, Jongin, and Yixing stared under the table.

"Hey look, what a coincidence, it's Tao," Chanyeok joked, trying to break the silence.

Tao quietly got up, face burning and he lookes at Kris and hated that he felt most embarrassed for looking like a fool in from of him, yet happy to see him.

But Kris expression was alarmed and confused, and Tao just wanted the floor to swallow him up and instead he decided to run out of the restaurant.

"Well. That was unexpected. When was he under the table?" asked Luhan, but Kris bolted up from his seat before chasing after the dark haired male, not waiting for an explanation.

Tao ran as fast as his legs could carry him, not noticing the tears that were gathering in his eyes after making a fool out of himself.

"Tao!" he heard a voice shout.

Tao looked back to see Kris running after him, and despite the protest in his heaving lungs, willed his legs to go faster until that voice quieted down.

He noticed no one was behind him now and decided to sit on the sidewalk near a park to catch his breath and wipe his tears away.

He had wants to bump into Kris all week, but not like this. He had said he missed him too, but now Tao was sure Kris probably thought him to be an embarrassment.

He heard the quick tapping of feet against pavement and looked up to find Kris standing a few feet away from him.

He got up to run again but Kris gripped his arm tightly as Tao tried to fight his way away.

"Please stop running from me," Kris panted, exhausted from all the running.

Tao shook his head and continued to pull away until Kris wrapped around in an embrace as Tao struggled against his hold.

"Let go of me!" Tao shouted, screaming wanting to turn this depressing embarrassment into anger.

Kris responded by embracing him tighter as Tao weakly tried to push himself away futilely, "Please let me go," he whimpered, unable to blink back the tears.

"If I do you'll run away again."

"Why do you care?" Tao choked out a humorless chuckle, "Not like you'll bother chasing me again."

Kris remained silent, "I'll keep chasing you even if that means running the circumference of the Earth."

"Please don't waste your breath," Tao scoffed angrily blinking back tears, "You're just like the rest taking what you need and leaving."

Kris froze at that, and Tao took the opportunity to run away again, but he didn't get very far before Kris's long legs caught up to him nearly sending them both falling to the ground, "I- I didn't mean to hurt you, I thought it was what you wanted."

Tao said nothing, hot tears escaping his eyes.

"I missed you a lot, you're all I think about when I drive on the bike," he continued wrapping his arms securely around the dark haired male.

"You're a sick bastard to pull this type of ," Tao snarled, "Don't waste my time with your lies and let me go."

Kris expression looked deeply hurt, "I'm not lying."

Tao wasn't listening, fighting and fighting until he went limp in Kris's hold.

"Do you hate me?"

Tao froze, he wanted to tell yes, scream that Kris was just another person that would disappoint him; but Tao could, he couldn't bring himself to say it and remained silent.

"If you do I guess I understand, I should have tried to keep in touch," Kris explained, running fingers through Tao's dark hair, "I was afraid I would just annoy you."

Tao chuckled bitterly, "Stop lying to yourself, you're just like everyone else. Just leave me and go away like everyone else."

Kris frowned, not pleased with this new side of Tao, but it didn't make him not like him any less.

"I'm not lying," Kris said again, nearly pleading, "It's not while you were gone, that time in the parking lot was when I realized I like you. You're always full of surprises and complex."

"I'm not a puzzle, once you find how the pieces fit you'll move on."

"I won't treat you like a puzzle, you're more to me than that," Kris replied, eyes earnest as he looked into Tao's and his gaze softened before leaning in.

Tao turned his head away, the sweet words were to much and despite himself, he was growing fonder of Kris than before.

"Don't," he whispered, new tears springing up and blocking his sight.

But Kris ignored the protest and kissed his cheek, a soft peck as his arms wound tighter around him.

Tao hated the warmth that spread across his chest and the way he gasped in surprise. Kris took advantage of that and brought his face up before leaning in to press his lips softly against Tao's, closing his eyes as he embraced him, "I'm not going to leave you."

Tao was fighting a blush, eyes downcast, "You just wanted me for lessons, please stop playing with me."

Kris gave an exasperated sighed, "Screw the bike!" he yelled, startling Tao before kissing more passionately, Tao unmoving against him at first before tentatively wrapping his fingers against his shoulders.

When they broke apart, Tao's gaze soften and wiped away some tears. "Don't insult the bike, I paid good money for it," he chuckled awkwardly.

"Liar, Chanyeol said he gave to you free," before grinning widely and nuzzling his face against Tao's neck, "I missed you."

"I..." Tao began staring uncertainly at Kris, "I missed you too."

"I've been away from you too long, I don't even remember you being this sensitive," he chuckled.

Tao huffed indignantly, "Let me go."

"Ok, wrong thing to say," Kris acknowledged embracing the other tighter and despite the little voice in Tao's head telling him no, he leaned his head against Kris's chest and closed his eyes.

Because sometimes love was like riding a motorcycle, you are unsure and scared of the falls to come, but before you know it, you realize once you pass that stage of fear, there is no other feeling so free and exhilarating.
