Chapter Five
Hiding from the RainHoya and Dongwoo stared at Sungyeol as they watched him look at his phone, break out into a small giggle, and then type something. Despite the fact the lanky idol never told them he liked someone or was dating anyone, both of them knew he had to be talking to a girl. Sungyeol was always like this when he had a crush, or even just any girl he thought was pretty.
“You think she actually likes him this time?” Dongwoo sighed. Sungyeol was constantly falling for girls, even some who had horrible personalities and only liked him for his idol status. And more often than not, Sungyeol fell for the same type of girl –pretty on the outside, hideous on the inside.
“I hope so,” Hoya sighed, “I don’t know how many more nights I can take of him whining to me and Sungjong. He’ll keep us up all night. It’s amazing how much energy he has after whining about how tired he is during dance practice.”
Another giggle from Sungyeol attracted the dancers’ attention once again. The lanky kid was blushing, something Hoya and Dongwoo couldn’t pass up teasing.
“Aw it looks like someone’s in love. Who is it this time? The girl from the karaoke down the street?” Dongwoo asked as he sat down on one side of Sungyeol.
Hoya happily plopped down on the other side, “Maybe the girl from the convenience store?”
“The daughter of the owner of the arcade?”
“The girl from the florist?”
“Or is she from a girl group?”
“Maybe a trainee?”
“Shut up, it’s no one.” Sungyeol tried to jump up to get away from the two, but they grabbed onto his arms and made sure that he couldn’t run off.
“No, it’s someone,” Dongwoo laughed and poked Sungyeol in the stomach. “Who is it?”
Before Sungyeol could protest again, Hoya grabbed the phone and tried to open it.
“Guys, leave the poor kid alone,” Sunggyu came in just in time to swipe the phone away from Hoya and toss it onto Sungyeol’s lap, “And you, stop being such an easy target. If you’re gonna flirt with girls over text you can’t be so obvious about it.”
“You make it seem like that’s all I do,” Sungyeol pouted.
Sunggyu just gave him a look, making the younger let out a cute sigh and leave the room.
“That stupid kid, falling in love with every girl he sees.” Sunggyu laughed as he watched Sungyeol run off to his room, probably to protect himself from Hoya’s teasing. “Do you think they’ve known each other for longer than a day?”
“Probably not.” Dongwoo shrugged and got off the couch, “Well, I have to go pry him away from his phone so he can practice. See you guys later.”
“Hyung, have you ever been in love?” Hoya suddenly asked since it was now just the two of them alone in a room together.
Sunggyu shrugged, “I don’t know, it depends on your definition of love I guess. I know most people think of first love as a reciprocated relationship, but I haven’t been in a relationship long enough for that. But I have liked someone to the point where I pretty much figured that it had to be stronger than just liking them. I mean, I know what it’s like to be your character, I’ve felt that before.”
“That must have been devastating,” Hoya reached out to ruffle Sunggyu’s hair. “Even though that guy was straight, he was stupid to not fall for someone like you, hyung.”
The leader couldn’t help but chuckle, “Guys don’t look at their guy best friend in that way if they’re not gay, Hoya. No matter what I did, he wasn’t going to ever think ‘oh, Sunggyu was cute today’ or something like that. That’s something I knew was never going to happen when I first started falling for him”
“But then why’d you fall for him?” Hoya couldn’t help but wonder. “Couldn’t you have just avoided him or something? Or just found something to do until the feelings went away?”
“Haven’t you ever liked a girl before?” Sunggyu wondered out loud. “Because if you did you’d know there is just no way to stop it. You can’t just turn off your feelings for someone. And I really wasn’t in a position to abandon him. Sometimes you’re stuck with people because they live in the same apartment building or go to the same school like your character. And sometimes, it’s more painful to disappear because then the person they like would be sad. Don’t you think that’s why your character stays beside his friend? He knows his friend depends on him and wants to be in his life, silently watching over not being able to see anything at all.”
“Is that how you felt? Like you had to stay around to see the person you liked just to be around him?” Hoya sighed, “But doesn’t it hurt to see them with someone else?”
“Not if they’re happy.” Sunggyu gave the younger a small smile, “If they’re happy, it makes everything okay.”
“But how do you get over something like that?” Hoya couldn’t imagine how much it must hurt to have lingering feelings for a long period of time.
“You don’t, or at least, your character doesn’t.” Sunggyu ruffled the younger hair as he got up to leave. “So it doesn’t really matter, does it?”
Hoya nodded, Sunggyu was completely correct. His character was always a little bit in love with his best friend, even at their reunion. It was just a different type of love when they were older. “I think I’m starting to understand everything now.” He then looked at Sunggyu and couldn’t help but ask, “Hyung, who did you like?”
“What?” Sunggyu was shocked by the sudden question. “Why’s that matter?”
“Just wondering,” Hoya chuckled, he wasn’t used to seeing his leader blush.
Luckily, Sunggyu was saved when Myungsoo walked in with a bag of food. “Hope you guys are hungry, me and Hyoan hyung bought too much food.”
