The Ghost of Masquerade

The Ghost of Masquerade

Today’s breakfast menu was so delicious. Henry and Shindong was really enthusiastic,

“Wow, this is daebak! This meat is fantastic!” Shindong appreciated. All of them who gathered around the table laughed. Heechul said with bright face,

“Fantastic, isn’t it? Dong Jun’s skill is beyond out of doubt anymore!”

Heechul family’s chef, Dong Jun, appeared with pudding and wide smile,

Omo, Master Heechul is too much!”

“No, Dong Jun ahjussi, this is really delicious,” Henry said with full mouth. Dong Jun laughed. Aunt Ri In looked at Henry,

“Henry! That’s bad! Don’t say something with full mouth!” but she laughed too.

“No, Auntie, I said something true!” Henry replied and he choked quickly. Ye Ri laughed and patted his back,

Aigoo, aigoo. Swallow your food first, Henry.”

Suddenly she remembered something,

“Um, who played the piano last night? Is that you, Uncle Heechul? That’s so beautiful,” she said.

Heechul looked at her and shook his head,

“Piano? Uh, no. I never played piano. I always played guitar here. Perhaps Ri In,”  he looked at Aunt Ri In. Aunt Ri In shook her head too,

“No, I can’t play piano,” she said.

“Then...who?” Ye Ri asked.

“Perhaps Aunt Yoon Mi, right, Auntie?” Henry asked Aunt Yoon Mi.

Beyond belief, Aunt Yoon Mi looked blank and said,

“That’s Ryeowook,”

The dining room suddenly quiet. From the room’s corner Ye Ri saw two waitresses whispered at each other, but she couldn’t hear what they say.

“Yoon Mi, stop talking nonsense,” Shindong quickly said but Yoon Mi shook her head,

“No, I hear that too. A lullaby, isn’t it, Ye Ri? He was really good in playing piano,” she said.

“Stop it, Yoon Mi, jebal,” Aunt Ri In touched Aunt Yoon Mi’s hand.

Ye Ri looked at Henry,

“Who’s Ryeowook?” she asked but Henry looked tense. He shook his head so Ye Ri stopped to ask.

***

“Try to beat that, Uncle Kang In!” Henry shouted and laughed. Kang In took his golf stick and laughed,

Omo, you’re so good, but don’t be so arrogant! Look at this!” and he hit the ball.

“Whoaa...” Henry’s mouth opened when the ball went into the hole.

“Your turn, Zhoumi,” Kang In looked satisfied.

They played golf for one hour. Ye Ri saw them from the house’s window while she helped Aunt Ri In made cake,

“They look so happy!” she laughed. Aunt Ri In laughed too,

“Yes! But you can’t beat Kang In! He is really good at golf!”

When time for lunch came, everyone looked so happy. Kang In, Henry and Zhoumi looked really satisfied.

“That’s so fun! Omo, Ye Ri, you should try too,” Zhoumi said while chopped his meat. Ye Ri laughed,

“You know that I can’t play golf!”

“But you can play the piano, right?” said Henry. Ye Ri shook her head quickly,

“Just a little,”

Henry laughed,

“Ah, you really. You always like that,”

Ye Ri laughed too,

“I’m serious! Ah, I hope there’s someone who can play piano here so I can learn,”

“If Ryeowook still here, he can teach you more about piano,”

Suddenly Aunt Yoon Mi said. Everyone was so shocked.

“Yoon Mi~ya!” Aunt Ri In shouted, looked worried.

Heechul’s face suddenly turned pale. Kang In and Shindong looked at each other, felt worried too,

“Yoon Mi, please don’t say something like that again...” Kang In said slowly.

Aunt Yoon Mi looked at him,

“You know about it, Kang In. He never leave...”

“Yoon Mi, stop!” Aunt Ri In covered her ears.

Aunt Yoon Mi stood up and looked at everyone,

“I’m full. Thank you for the food,” and she left the dining room.

Ye Ri was too shocked to say anything. She looked at Henry and Zhoumi. Both of them didn’t know how to react too.

***

“He’s my grand-grandfather’s son too,” Henry explained at the music room when Zhoumi and Ye Ri asked about Ryeowook.

“And he...died too?” asked Zhoumi. Henry nodded,

“Yes, 30 years ago,”

“He was so good in piano. But don’t be scare, guys. Aunt Yoon Mi just said nonsense thing. I don’t know why she’s scare with this house,” Henry explained more.

Ye Ri, whofelt confused, started to play the piano while asked,

“And, he’s good in playing piano?”

Henry nodded,

“Yes...he’s so talented...”

Then he smiled,

“Um...about piano, let’s collaborate, Ye Ri,” he said.

“Huh?” Ye Ri looked at him,

“Piano?” she looked confused but then she smiled widely,

“Ah, OK!” Her thumbs up.

Zhoumi’s face turned sullen,

Omomo, why so suddenly? Then how about me?”

Henry laughed,

“Try to sing. We’ll play a simple song,”

Henry started to play the violin then Zhoumi sang. Ye Ri played the piano,

naeirimyeon uriga mannadeon
jeo gil motungiro nan dasineun gal su eomneun geojyo
naeirimyeon achime nuneul tteo
jeil meonjeo geudael dasineun tteoollyeoseon andoejyo

“Good, good!” Henry smiled widely. Ye Ri smiled too.

“I like it!” Zhoumi smiled widely. Then Ye Ri played another song. Henry suddenly laughed,

“A children song?”

Ye Ri nodded and laughed too. Zhoumi shook his head but he laughed too and started to sing that song happily.

They’re on the music room till night before Aunt Ri In called them all for dinner.

***

Before slept, Ye Ri did her habit again. she really immersed with her novel while she suddenly startled.

She heard that lullaby again...

“Music room!” she shouted out softly.

She quickly went to the music room. That lullaby still played when she stood in front of the room’s door.

Then she opened the door slowly and took a peep.

She saw a man played the piano. But from his body, Ye Ri knew that he’s not Uncle Heechul, Uncle Kang In, Henry, or Zhoumi.

Then Ye Ri didn’t know when that man realized her presence. But suddenly he turned his body and Ye Ri was to shock to shout.

That man wore a mask. And he looked at Ye Ri for a second before he dissapeared.
