My Boy

It was the day of our fansign. My smile didn’t falter since it was after all the time we would be spending with our sones who waited patiently for us. People piled in and I did what we needed to do with much enthusiasm but then again my frustration would suddenly pop out in my head once I remembered.

We were supposed to meet after that event but he had to cancel. I can’t do anything, I can’t demand, I can’t just get mad at him. I’m just upset with the situation; our situation. But the show must go on; I must be the best Seohyun I can be.

I sighed inside after signing one album and handing it back to the fan who smiled excitedly at me. I smiled back but then there was this sudden thud in my chest when I noticed something—someone in my peripheral vision.

Finally, a wider grin escaped my lips as his tender smile met mine.

Silly, oppa…

I said to myself as if sending a telepathic message to that guy that was cuing on my line.

The people seemed to move too slowly.  The crowd seemed to be too thick.

I just couldn’t wait for his turn.

After a few minutes that felt like a million seconds, he finally approached me with a warm expression. His eyes narrowed for a moment like telling me something, I couldn’t help but giggle softly as he bended down limiting the sound of his voice.  I moved forward too as if on cue and started, “Annyeong haseyo.”

“Hi, Joohyun-ssi,” he answered back giving me his album.

“What name should I write?” I asked still holding his gaze. My hands were obviously shaking despite knowing how well he blended in the crowd with his oversized coat, thick rimmed glasses and a cap that hid almost a quarter of his face. Nobody would notice except, of course, me.

“Please write, to My Boy.”

I pursed my lips to refrain from giggling excitedly as the people around us seemed to disappear so suddenly. We were the only people in that crowded place; no one else seemed to exist.

I wrote slowly like prolonging the seconds he was there ever so near me— us in public.

“To My Boy, thank you for supporting and loving SNSD…” I bit my lips then added, “From, The Boy’s Girl.”

I reached out to give him back the signed album. A jolt of electricity ignited when his fingers brushed on mine. And when I thought it was over, he got something from the floor— a goguma plushie with a card tied on it. He smiled signaling for me to open the card; I gave him a sideways glance mouthing “are you out of your mind?”  to which he pouted so I just untied the letter.

“Did you like our fancy date? But forgive me if I could only come close for a few minutes. I have been watching you though. It was like dating you from afar, yes? I love you…”

My heart swelled and I couldn’t help but smile. If only I could just grab him by the collar and kiss him right in front of everybody else.

His being there was good enough—perfect enough.

Then something else made me chuckle, almost aloud.                                                                  

P.S. Please don’t smile at your fanboys. Your smile belongs only to me.

I nodded with a fake glare as he bowed a goodbye and proceeded to Taeyeon Unnie’s line. I met some more fans, but true to my promise, I didn’t smile that much to my fanboys, as silly as it was.

Then we started passing glances at each other. Restraining our smiles. Limiting our signals.

But we were there, in that public place… dating from afar.

Fancy.

When it was his turn for Taeyeon Unnie’s sign, I give him a quick glance and caught his wink.

“Hi! Thank you for coming! What should I write?”

I heard Unnie asked oblivious of who he was until I heard his soft reply.

“Please write, To Maknae’s Boy.”

I almost fell off my seat and Unnie’s expression changed upon recognition, but she hurriedly fixed him a knowing smile and wrote her dedications. When Oppa left her table, Taeyeon unnie gave a gentle nudge to Fany Unnie beside her.

It was all a mixture of excitement and fear. The moment was simply nothing but a short escape. A game of hide-and-seek.

We have always been each other’s dangerous adventure. The kind of risky habit we’d never be willing to quit.

My heart only stopped racing when he finally disappeared from my sight.

Just then Taeyeon Unnie handed me a note with Fany Unnie’s familiar .

“Joohyuna, please don’t tell me that was your boy.”

To which I wrote back, “Unnie, I’m afraid to say that, yes… that was my boy.”
