Black Noodles
Black NoodlesThursday: 2011 April 14: At The Restaurant
“How many in your party?”
“2.”
“Follow me please!”
The hostess led the two to the back of the restaurant, sitting them in a booth.
“Your waitress will be with you shortly.”
“Thank you.”
She smiled sweetly toward Kevin and gave him a wink as she walked away.
“You’re prettier than her.”
“What? Why are you saying something like that?”
“Cuz you are…” Kevin blushed and looked down at the menu before him.
“Ok… I think I know what we should eat.”
“What?” Kevin continued to look at the menu, even though he didn’t have a choice in what he was to eat.
“Soondubu jjigae (hot and spicy soft tofu stew).”
“I think you should choose something else.”
“Why?”
“Do you know what today is?”
“April 14th, why?” Amy confusedly put down her menu.
“And what day is that in Korea?”
“I don’t know?”
“Yes you do, you and I used to celebrate it before you dated Eli cuz we were ‘so lonely’.” Kevin laughed lightly at the memory. They had made a pact when he graduated the eighth grade to celebrate it every year with her as long as neither of them had a “significant other.”
“Black day?”
“Bingo! And what do you eat on black day?”
“Black noodles.”
Kevin could never forget the first time they celebrated black day together. They ended up with more food on their clothes than in their stomachs. Amy was always known to use her hands when she talked and had accidentally started a mini food war between the two while telling a story about how her friend Liz got paint in the teacher’s hair earlier that morning.
“Good job! I knew you could do it!”
“Shut up! I may not be top of my class, but I can be smart too!”
Kevin smiled as their waitress came up to them.
“Hello, my name is Julie and I’ll be your waitress today. Are you ready to order?”
“No, not yet. Can we have some water though?”
“Sure, I’ll be right back with that!”
“I thought we were getting black noodles?”
“I changed my mind.”
“Why?”
“Because-“
Just then Kevin got out of his seat and stood next to Amy.
“What are you doing?”
He pulled her up out of her seat, taking both of her hands in his.
“You never wore something like this for Eli?”
“No…” Amy tried to pull her hands back, but Kevin held on tighter.
“You never forget anything people tell you, but you always tease me by ‘forgetting’ certain things.”
“Like what?”
“I’ve never seen you treat Eli as more than a brother, even when you were dating. You didn’t look at him the way you look at me.”
“So?”
“So,” he took a step closer. Slowly he let go of one of Amy’s hands and gently brushed the hair that framed her face behind her ear.
“Do you like me?”
“What?”
It was Amy’s turn to blush. She liked him, a lot. She’s liked him since she moved to California from Korea almost five years ago.
Her reddened face was a good enough answer for Kevin. He tenderly crashed his lips into her soft pink glossy lips. It was innocent, yet longing like he has been wanting and waiting a lifetime for this. Unwillingly, Kevin pulled away and looked into Amy’s eyes’
“That’s why we shouldn’t eat black noodles.”
