Part I - Chapter Two

Always There

Part One: My Child
Chapter Two

“Joonyoung, you never told me that you had a son!” Joonyoung’s bandmate  from Switch On exclaimed as he pinched Roy’s cheeks.

“He’s not my son. What nonsense are you talking about?” Joonyoung replied.

It had already been two weeks since Roy and Sangcho arrived. Every day, Joonyoung called the child welfare department only to be told the same news again and again. “No one is looking for Roy. Please take care of him for one more day.” One more day eventually turned into one more week. And that one more week became two. In that span of time, Roy and Joonyoung had grown attatched to each other.

That day, Joonyoung was having a photoshoot. He had taken Roy along with him. All the other models, make-up artists and photographers doted on Roy – feeding him and giving him gifts. Roy, the aspiring comedian, who seemed to enjoy the attention used it as an opportunity to make everyone laugh with his silly jokes.

“Can noona take you home?” he was asked.

“No,” Roy answered promptly. “I belong to Joonyoung appa.”

“So you’re calling me appa now?” Joonyoung asked after overhearing what Roy had said. Joonyoung lifted him up affectionately and tickled him. Roy giggled as Joonyoung playfully threw him up in the air.

“Okay then,” Joonyoung told him, “you’ll be my son till your parents come to find you. I’m your appa and you have to listen to me when I tell you to stop watching TV. Arrasseo?”

Roy shook his head stubbornly. Joonyoung set him down and started to tickle him harder. Roy wiggled and laughed. “Arrasseo?” Joonyoung asked again.

“Arrasseo, appa” Roy finally said in between giggles.

“Good boy,” Joonyoung said. “Joonyoung appa will buy you something to eat after the photoshoot. But for now, listen to noona, okay? She’ll watch you while I’m busy.”

Joonyoung winked – his charisma just overflowing – at the make-up artist. “You’ll take care of him, won’t you?”

The make-up artist, obviously smitten by Joonyoung, could only say yes.

Well, after all, no girl could ever deny requests from Joonyoung.

The day was cool and crisp. The sun shined brightly as puffy clouds hovered in the sky. Joonyoung and Roy walked back hand-in-hand to the apartment. They now wore matching sweaters – gifts from the clothing line that Joonyoung modeled for. They talked happily as they made their way to the elevator to Joonyoung’s floor.

Their perfect day, however, was not going to end without a violent storm.

“Sekyung-ah!” Joonyoung said as the elevator doors opened at their floor. A woman was waiting for them right outside the elevator.

“You’ve been lying to me all this time!” You never told me that you had a son!” she screamed.

“Let me explain,” Joonyoung said.

Sekyung was Joonyoung’s most recent ex-girlfriend. She stared at Joonyoung like a tiger ready to kill its prey.

“Shut up!” Sekyung grabbed Roy’s arm. “Is this the little rascal that you’ve been hiding from me? Is he the reason why we broke up!?”

Sekyung gripped Roy’s arm tighter. Roy started to cry.

“Sekyung, calm down. You’re hurting him!”

“So you’re really choosing this child over me!?” she started to drag Roy with her.

“Let go of him!” Joonyoung raised his voice.

“Don’t you dare yell at me!” Sekyung slapped Joonyoung. Joonyoung’s lip bled from the impact. Joonyoung stared at her – shocked that she could do such a thing. Even Sekyung herself seemed astonished at what she just did. Joonyoung quickly held Roy’s arm and pulled him away from her.

All of a sudden, Roy’s fat little dog dashed out the apartment and started yapping at the intruder – Sekyung. He barred his teeth at her, getting ready to attack. Knowing what danger she was in, Sekyung ran to the elevator and left.

“Are you okay, Roy?” Joonyoung asked as he examined Roy’s hand. Roy nodded though he was still crying.

“Shhh…it’s alright now. She’s gone and she’s never coming back,” Joonyoung said in a soothing voice.

“I’m sorry, appa,” Roy said. Joonyoung pulled him into a hug. “Don’t say sorry. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Did she scare you?” Joonyoung asked as he carried Roy into the apartment. Roy nodded.

“You shouldn’t be scared of people like her from now on. Joonyoung appa will be by your side to protect you,” Joonyoung promised. Roy smiled and kissed Joonyoung on the cheek.

Joonyoung had never felt happier in his life. At that moment, he understood why and how his parents were able to raise and support him, how his friends always stood up for him. When you love someone, you’d do anything to make him/her feel happy, supported, protected, and loved. And all the sacrifices are just worth it if it's for him/her.

He promised himself that he’d treasure the little boy that he carried in his arms and love him like he was his own son.

“Riiiiiiiing! Riiiiiiing!” the doorbell suddenly rang. Roy and Joonyoung looked at each other, wondering if Sekyung had come back.

“I’ll get the door. Stay right here,” Joonyoung said placing Roy down.

“Click.” The door creaked as Joonyoung carefully opened it. Right at his doorstep, he found a basket. He went closer to see what was inside.

It was a baby. He had black bowl-cut hair, small brown eyes, chubby pink cheeks and an adorable smile. Around his wrist was a tag that said, “This is Yoo Seungwoo. Please take care of him.”

----------

"Hyung, wake up," Joonyoung heard Roy say. "The plane already landed. We're in Hongkong now."

Joonyoung hazily opened his eyes. "Roy! You're all grown up!" he sat up in surprise.

"What are you talking about?" Roy asked as he shook Joonyoung. "I think you're still half-asleep."

"So it was all just a dream," Joonyoung finally realized.

Roy took his guitar from the luggage compartment overhead. "Hyung, let's go!"

Joonyoung finally got up, gathered his belongings, and followed Roy out the plane.
