‘What the hell does this mean?’, Tracy kept looking at Peniel’s letter for him, puzzled by it. She wanted to call him to bug him about it. But she wanted to wait until later at the Lantern Parade. She was sure Peniel has a reason for the delay.

It was already four in the afternoon. She kept on walking back and forth across her room, and going through her closet deciding what to wear. She was supposed to meet Peniel at six. And of course, she wanted to look perfect before the eyes of the guy she likes.

She decided to wear clothes she’s most comfortable in – a flowy blouse that makes her look taller, a pair of shorts and a pair of cute sandals. She even tied her hair back to add to the whole girly feel.

As she rode the bus, she sent a message to Peniel.

Hey. I’m on my way. What about you?

Peniel got excited and nervous as he read her message. He let out a deep sigh.

I’m on my way, too. See you in a bit. :D Take care.

He lied. He was already waiting for her at the veranda for about thirty minutes now. For two days he got everything ready. He even asked a favour from his hyungs to record the song he composed.

Alright, be there in about 15 minutes.

Peniel got even more nervous. He’s got 15 minutes to relax or else his plan is going to fail.

“You’re just on time,” Peniel said to Tracy who arrived just a few minutes before the parade started. The parade was awesome. How the different lanterns on the floats were lit was just perfect. What made the parade more perfect was the fact that they were watching from their special veranda. Everybody else was sitting on the streets, while only the two of them had the greatest view possible.

Peniel then looked at Tracy, checking whether she’s enjoying herself. She was so amazed and her eyes sparkled like that of a little kid’s. He couldn’t help but smile as well. But her brows suddenly furrowed, and yet she was still smiling. He couldn’t help but worry.

“Hey, I thought you were enjoying the parade?” Peniel asked her.

“I am,” she answered.

“Then why do your eye brows seem like they don’t like to be apart?” he asked again, separating Tracy’s brows and putting them to their original position, making her smile.

“It’s too cold; I guess I didn’t dress up thick enough,”

“Oh, then, here,” he put his coat around her shoulders, “now you can enjoy the parade again.” This made her smile even more.

They enjoyed the show after. Pointing out the strengths of each lantern. But when Peniel saw that there were only five lanterns left at the end of the parade, he said to Tracy, “Wait here, I just need to go to the restroom”. She just nodded, not wanting to be distracted from watching the parade.

He then hid himself behind a post five to six meters away from her. He just watched her from there, feeling like a stalker. But he didn’t care since he can see that she was very happy. To continue the execution of his plan, he sent a message to her saying,

Look inside my coat’s pocket. I left something for you.

He saw her pick up her phone. She kept searching the pockets of his coat right after.

An mp3 player? What’s this for?

She answered, confused.

Listen to the song in it.

She quickly took the earphones to listen to the song. ‘Girl, you don’t have to hide your feelings anymore.’ She paused the song to send a message to him.

Wait, is this your voice?

Yes, it is. Just listen to it.

She followed his instruction. She played it again from the top. ‘Girl, you don’t have to hide your feelings anymore. You see, I know how you feel about me. And I may not have shown it but I feel the same way. So listen up.’ His words just made her jaw drop. Then her expression went from surprised to confused as she heard words she never heard before. ‘첫눈에 반했단 걸 알아요 그대가 말한 사람 나죠. 가슴이 뛰는 것도 들려요 그대 맘 숨기지 마요’ The song kept playing and all she could understand was the occasional English words in the song like, ‘baby baby’, and ‘listen to me, girl’. She sent another message to him, wanting to know what this song really meant.

What does this really mean? This is U&I, isn’t it?

“Yes, it is,” said Peniel, suddenly walking towards Tracy, startling her. “You wanted to know what it meant, right?” With that, he took the other end of the earphones so that both of them can listen to the song at the same time. He also took the mp3 player, taking control of when to press play and when to pause. She just stared into his eyes, wanting to know what the song meant.

“You already understand what I said in the first part, right?” he asked. She just answered with a nod. He played the song again from the top. ‘Girl, you don’t have to hide your feelings anymore. You see, I know how you feel about me. And I may not have shown it but I feel the same way. So listen up.’

‘첫눈에 반했단 걸 알아요’ “I know you fell for me at first sight”, Peniel said, translating. Continuously pressing the play button to hear the lyrics and hitting the pause button for him to translate.

‘그대가 말한 사람 나죠’ “The person you talked about is me”

‘가슴니 뛰는 것도 들려요’ “I hear your heart beating”

‘그대 맘 숨기지 마요’ “Don’t hide your heart”, he ended with the first verse.

Tracy hit his arm lightly, protesting, “I didn’t…” Peniel put his pointer finger on his mouth, telling her to keep quiet. “Listen,” he told her. She just nodded. He pressed play again.

‘Baby, baby 나도 그래요. 애쓰면서 cool 한 척 했죠’ “Baby, baby, I feel the same way. I just pretended to be cool”

‘Lady, lady 이리 와봐요. 이제 내가 안아줄게요’ “Lady, lady, come here, I will hug you now”. Slowly Tracy began to smile.

‘그대보다 더 좋아해요 그대보다 내가 더 사랑해요 Oh listen to me girl Oh baby baby girl’ “I like you more than you like me, I love you more than you love me. Oh, listen to me girl. Oh, baby, baby girl,”

‘나 그대가 좋아 Woo baby’ “I like you, woo baby.” The lyrics were making her smile even grow wider.

‘우리 이제 만나볼까요 둘이 사귀는 건 어떨까요’ “Wanna date me now? How about becoming my girlfriend?”

‘누가 봐도 우린 정말 잘 어울려요’ “Anyone can say that we look good together,” He signalled her not to answer, “Don’t answer. The song is not yet done,” making her laugh.

‘Everyday my girl everything my girl 그대라면 내 모두를 줄게요’ “Everyday, my girl, everything, my girl, if it’s you, I’ll give you my everything”

‘Listen to me girl baby, baby girl 나 그대가 좋아’ “Listen to me girl, oh baby, baby girl, I like you.”

‘그대의 눈을 보면 알아요’ “When I look into your eyes, I know”

‘거짓말 못하면서 바보’ “Fool, you can’t even lie”

‘떨리는 그대 입술 보여요’ “I see your trembling lips.”

‘귀여운 아이 같아요’ Peniel pinched Tracy’s cheeks and said, “You’re like a cute child.”

‘Baby baby 걱정 말아요 그대 몰래 준비해뒀죠’ “Baby, baby, don’t worry. I prepared everything without you knowing.”

‘Lady lady 눈을 감아요 내가 먼저 키스할게요’ He hesitated, but eventually said, “Lady, lady, close your eyes, I will kiss you first,” surprising Tracy with his words.

He let the chorus play, since she already knew what it meant. Instead, he explained himself, “Don’t worry, I won’t kiss you yet. I’ll wait for your answer.”

Tracy just smiled. She was worried though, he didn’t say he won’t kiss her, he said he won’t kiss her yet. Peniel then pressed play again, stopping her from her worrying. She was amazed, there’s even a rap part in the song.

 ‘행복한 오후 한 잔의 아메리카노와 비스킷 우리랑 참 비슷한 게 많아 딱 어울려’ “A cup of Americano and biscuits on a happy afternoon has so many similarities with us – it goes so well”

‘저 푸르른 하늘에 비친’ “The clouds in the sky look like your face.”

Peniel took Tracy’s hand, her palm with his thumb, making her blush. ‘그대 얼굴을 닮은 구름 한 조각 마주 잡은 손을 어루만져봐 또’ “I caress your hand that I’m holding.”

‘빨개진 볼에 살며시 입을 맞춘다’ “I softly kiss your reddened cheek,” With this, he followed the song’s lyrics and softly kissed her cheek, making her blush even more.

He translated the chorus again, emphasizing its words.

‘그대보다 더 좋아해요 그대보다 내가 더 사랑해요’ “I like you more than you like me, I love you more than you love me.”

‘Oh listen to me girl Oh baby, baby girl나 그대가 좋아 Woo baby’ “Oh listen to me girl, oh baby, baby girl, I like you, baby.”

‘우리 이제 만나볼까요 둘이 사귀는 건 어떨까요’ “Wanna date me now? How about becoming my girlfriend?”

‘누가 봐도 우린 정말 잘 어울려요’ “Anyone can say that we look good together.”

‘Everyday my girl everything my girl 그대라면 내 모두를 줄게요’ “Everyday my girl, everything my girl, if it’s you, I’ll give you everything.”

He looked into her eyes and sincerely sang the last line without playing the song.

‘Listen to me girl baby, baby girl 나 그대가 좋아’ “Listen to me girl, baby, baby girl, I like you.”

Tracy was speechless. The song he composed was just so heart-felt. She was so happy and so touched that all she could do was hug him. He hugged her back. He whispered to her, “I’ll take that as a yes.”

Just as they were having their moment, fireworks started to light up the night sky, as if joining their celebration. They watched the fireworks while holding each other’s hands.

“I guess the parade ended,” Peniel said. Tracy leaned her head against his shoulder, taking the mp3 player from his hands. She played the song again as they watched the night sky got lit by fireworks.

“Merry Christmas, Peniel.” she said.

He kissed her forehead and replied, “Merry Christmas, Tracy.”
