The biggest news in entertainment history was also the best kept secret in entertainment history. No, it was not happening in Hollywood or New York City; it wasn’t even on the radar in London or Toronto. But all of Asia would be in an uproar if they knew that Cephus’ wife had been reborn and the Rising Gods of the East were coming out of the darkness as they approached the horizon.
The world’s record holding fan club, Cassiopeia, had seen Episode One of K-POP Extreme Survival. In a million fan march, hordes of Dong Bang Shin Ki supporters gathered in front of SM Entertainment’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea to demand that the group be given control over their contracts as “DBSK belonged to its fans, not the management”, and that the fans should decide their fate. Although SME’s CEO’s far-reaching power kept the crux of the story out of the media, he could not deny that he had made more money with a five member band than the current duo. Even accepting a small percentage of the royalties for letting the boys perform the songs to which he held the copyrights was more profitable than letting the music die.
Of course, there were conditions to the new contract. The five members would have to unite in secret and disappear into rehearsals to make up for many years’ lost time. It had even been suggested they not tell their families of their activities other than to mention that they would be sequestered for creative purposes, and not necessarily with whom. This gag order appeared to be extreme, yet all involved agreed to it. DBSK had to be in unison in all facets before even a press conference could be held. Lee Soo Man wanted every penny he could scrape off his part of the contract. That meant the boys had to be concert ready before the concerts could be booked. And he knew the venues around the world would sell out in minutes.
The boys knew it too. The fans had wanted it for years. And while “Uknow” Yunho had worried endless about whether the fans had forgotten them during the lawsuit years, the TVXQ Duo of the 2012 SM Town Tour had proven his worries useless. Since he and Changmin had been relatively sequestered from their normal lives during their time with SM Management, training for an upcoming event was not much of an upheaval. For the members of JYJ, who had tasted artistic and personal freedom, withdrawing from an international social calendar might make them appear … well, somewhat sketchy in mental status.
As it was, fans had decided which of the members was depressed, suicidal, crazy, and just about every other emotion possible at any given time. Mostly it was transference on the fans’ behalves. Sure, the guys had their share of ups and downs. Who doesn’t? Yet JaeJoong, Yoochun and Junsu being incommunicado might seem more negative than positive. Therefore, it was decided that C-JeS Entertainment would send out a press release simply stating that the members of JYJ would be taking a working vacation to compose and rehearse for an upcoming album and subsequent tour. That was nothing out of the ordinary, if not vague enough to satisfy even the staunchest of supporters.
