Mute
"Good morning class," The young female teacher greeted as she got to her desk in front of her class. No one heard her, it was way too noisy between the students. "Wait, calm down, guys, calm—YAH!" She screamed, hitting hard with her books on her wooden desk. Wow, that surely startled me. Apparently, not only me, but the rest of the class as well. "Finally! Dealing with you guys is so hard, I'm getting older everyday because of you." She cleared . "Anyways, we have a new student joining us this semester." The pretty teacher glanced at me, at last. "Come in!" She nodded, smiling.
I cleared my throat and straightned my backpack. This is it. I stepped in and was welcomed by a whole classroom full of guys staring at me. Not to be racist, since I'm also one of them, but they all looked pretty much the same. I walked until I got to the teacher's side, and then bowed to my new classmates.
"Hello, I'm Lee Byunghun." I tried to glance at everyone, but I was actually getting nervous for so much attention. "Nice to meet you all, hope we get along!"
No response.
Gah, this is so embarassing.
I tried not to sound too enthusiasic but not too boring either, so I don't see where did I fail, to receive such an uninterested reaction from my new colleagues.
"Ugh, right, don't mind them, they are all shy around new people." I felt teacher's hand on my back, pushing me forward. "Go ahead, choose your seat. But do it fast," She added.
I made my way to the back of the class, where all empty seats were. I sat down on the closest to the door. I felt like an outsider right when I sat down: that row had no one. Like, no one; empty. No one was paying attention to me either, which made me even more nervous. I had read about Korean high schools before enrolling this one and let's say it didn't exactly make me feel comfortable. But I'm sure it couldn't be that bad. As long as I blended in, nothing could happen to me... right?
Well, that wasn't very reassuring, L. Joe. Wait, Byunghun. Gotta get used to my real name now.
"Byunghun there came from the States a few weeks ago, if I'm not wrong...?" She added, I nodded. "So he may not be used to our culture; please take care of him. I mean, like, really take care of him. Don't just walk around with your little group of friends. Homeroom's over, stay quiet until the following teacher comes in. See you kids."
"Kids? Please, we are seniors now." Some guy answered her back, in a rather offended tone.
"Then act like one!" The teacher laughed and walked out of the room.
Everyone went back to their chit-chat, leaving me out of it. I tried not to show affected by it as I looked over to them. It's understandable, it's only the first day.
Suddenly, the door next to me flung open and a rather emotionless guy came in. Everyone stopped talking to greet him: "Hey L", "Myungsoo, late again?", "Long time no see, bro", however he shrugged all them off with a single nod and walked to his seat, on the furthest end of the same row where I was.
Well, guess I won't be that alone anymore.
School passed by rather quickly, nothing really happened; but hey, it's only Monday.
So, as soon as the bell rang, I ran to the bus stop near the school and impatiently waited for the bus that would take me to my dear mom.
"I'm here to visit Lee Min Hee," I said as soon as I got to the reception, and handed her my ID.
"Yes, just a moment please." She took my card and started typing on the computer.
"Ha Jinnie! You're here again?" A lady worker next to me spoke in a rather sweet tone, not professional at all. I looked over to them and saw a girl wearing my school's uniform. She handed the lady a letter, smiling. "Dr. Park? Oh, you know where it is, right, sweetie?" The lady smiled and the girl called Ha Jin nodded. "Second floor, room 483, she's waiting for you there." The girl nodded, gave a small smile and slightly bowed, before making her way to the elevator.
"Here you go," The lady in front of me handed me a visitor card. "Patient Lee Min Hee is on the fourth floor, room 1132."
"Thank you."
I followed the girl Ha Jin and we both waited for the elevator. I let her get in first, even pressed the second floor before pressing the fourth for me, but not once I heard her say those "thank you" words for me. Well, it's not the first time I meet rude people, but it's always disappointing.
I managed to shrug it off and leaned my back against the lifter's wall, seeing how slow it was going. I sighed, crossing my arms.
"Hello, beautiful~" I grinned as I caught a glimpse of her.
"Byunghun!" Before doing anything else, she pressed a button somewhere on her hospital bed that lift her until she was in a rather comfortable sitting position. "Come here."
I carefully hugged her and sat on her bed, by her side, holding her hand.
"How was your first day of school?" She asked in her usually calm voice, between some unsteady breaths.
"It was fine."
"Made a lot of friends?"
I chuckled, "Not really." I looked at her. "Yet, of course."
I curled a strand of her hair behind her ear and caressed her cheek. I smiled at her and she smiled back. I felt my heart warm up, my cold features melting at her lovely presence. My mom. My gorgeous Mother. Seeing her in this state, so pale, so fragile, saddened me. However, the way she always smiled as if nothing was wrong, surely brightened up my day.
I ran my hand through her dark hair and it shocked me seeing strands of her hair following my fingers, hanging apart from their original place. I stared at them and slowly felt my chin tremble. My eyes grew watery. I glanced at her, her eyes all over me, filled with worry.
When I should be the one worrying.
"It's okay," She whispered as she wiped away my tears with her thumb. "I'm alright. I'm alright, Byunghun."
I felt her once strong hands on my shoulders, lightly shaking me. Hands that took care of me, of a family, hands that fought and worked hard to support us, to raise me.
Her hands cupped my cheeks and our foreheads leaned against each other's. I remember biting my lip and closing my eyes.
I don't want to lose her.
