Chapter 1

We Are Distances Apart

*Planet of Salv’ias*

“Chanyeol!!” Donghae called out to the figure sitting on the healthy green grass.

Chanyeol looked over to Donghae who was running across the field.

He and his companion , Kris, stood up to greet their hyung.

“Donghae hyung! I’ve been looking for you!” Chanyeol said as Donghae slowed to a walk.

“Sorry, I was visiting Leeteuk hyung” Donghae apologised.

“Well, let’s go then. Sorry Kris, we’ll hang out later yeah?” Chanyeol said.

“I have to get back to building the stage for the festival anyway” Kris said “I’ll meet you back here in a few hours”

“Come on Chanyeol!!” Donghae said, already skipping away “Teukie hyung is counting on us!”

“Coming!” Chanyeol shouted, walking after his hyperactive hyung “See you later Kris”

“Sungmin hyung! I have the flowers you asked for” Ryeowook said.

Sungmin, who was setting up a food stall for the festival, turned around and smiled.

“Thankyou Wookie, just put them over there” Sungmin instructed.

“So, how are preparations going?” Ryeowook asked, while busying himself with helping out Sungmin with the food stall.

“After I fix up this stall, all I have to do is wait for Kris to make the stage” Sungmin said, clasping his hands together.

“Great! I’m super excited” Ryeowook said happily “Oh and I’m starting to make the feast for the festival tonight. Maybe if you’re free you could help?”

Sungmin nodded “I should be done with the stage by then, I’d be glad to help!”

“Thanks hyung, you’re the best~!” Ryeowook sang, hugging Sungmin.

Sungmin didn’t react. He didn’t even hug back.

Ryeowook stepped back and looked up at the older man.

“Hyung, what’s wrong?” Ryeowook asked innocently.

“I-It’s nothing Ryeowook ah” Sungmin said, brushing him off.

“Nothing? I know there is something wrong Minnie hyung”

“It’s just… when you hugged me before I felt like it should have been someone else. I’m missing someone Wookie and I have no idea why or who. I’m scared” Sungmin confessed.

“You’ve been feeling weird like that too? I thought it was just me” Ryeowook said.

“Maybe we should speak to Leeteuk hyung about this later” Sungmin pondered.

“We should” Ryeowook agreed “But for now I’ll help you with this stall”

“Thanks Ryeowookkie” Sungmin said.

The two started work on the festival stall, working together as one.

“Seongsaengnim!” a child whined, raising his hand.

Soohyun turned his attention to the young Wood Elf in need of his attention.

“What seems to be the problem Nichkhun ah?” Soohyun asked the boy.

Nichkhun looked at the art work he had been working on and scrunched up his face in confusion.

“I don’t know what this is” he said.

Soohyun looked down to the boys bundle of clay. He stared at it for a while before coming to the conclusion that it resembled a cow… a really messed up cow

“If you tilt your head sideways it sort of looks like a cow”

“A cow? It was supposed to be you Seongsaengnim!” Nichkhun said, sounding quite frustrated.

Soohyun scoffed “I don’t look that bad, do I?”

Nichkhun shook his head “I can’t do it right Seongsaengnim! I want to do art but I just can’t!!”

“Khunnie, I’m not an art expert but when I find someone who is I will get them to teach you a few things and don’t say your bad at art! Your artwork is just a little abstract” Soohyun said, comforting the upset boy.

“Abstract?” Nichkhun asked, not understanding.

Soohyun nodded “Abstract art is art that doesn’t necessarily have to be anything”

“You mean I can make art that is nothing?” Nichkhun asked in excitement.

“Nae Khunnie. Now continue that master piece of yours and show me when it is done”

Nichkhun nodded and moulded his small, chubby hands into the clay.

Soohyun smiled in satisfaction as he watched over Nichkhun and the rest of his class.  He adored each and every one of his students to pieces and he absolutely loved being the one to encourage their learning and shaping them into hardworking Elves.

But lately Soohyun had been slightly off task. He kept thinking of a boy. He wasn’t sure who the boy was but his thoughts seemed to revolve around this person lately. He felt like he was missing this boy and all he wanted to do was think about him. But he had to brush those thoughts aside, he had children to care for.

“Hyung, what ARE you doing?” Kris asked, watching as Mir tried to smack the nail in place with a hammer.

Every time he went to hit the nail he missed. Kris couldn’t take any more of this time wasting so he slipped the hammer out of Mir’s hand and held it in his own.

“Hyung, just watch and learn” Kris said.

“Yah! I was going to hit the nail properly!! I was just warming up” Mir said in defence.

“Sure you were hyung” Kris said sarcastically.

Kris held the hammer and swiftly whacked it down onto the head of the nail.

“And that’s how you use a hammer” he said confidently.

“At this rate we’ll have the festival stage built in no time!” Mir said enthusiastically.

Kris nodded “Now why don’t you take a break? You look awfully exhausted”

Mir smiled “That’s the best idea you’ve had in a long time!”

Mir grabbed his water bottle from the ground and took a long sip, walking over to sit in the shade of an old oak tree.

The truth was Kris liked Mir. He was a good friend but he can be annoying to build with. He can never do anything right and he is always dropping heavy things on Kris. One time Mir was carrying a boulder up a tree and Kris just so happened to be standing right underneath. Let’s just say that Tao had to spend three months with his dear friend, Doctor Kiseop.

Mir sipped at his bottle of water again and flipped through the pages of his comic. Sometimes he felt as if Kris would be better off without him. The younger man was always thinking of excuses to get Mir to leave and this made Mir feel as if he wasn’t contributing his fair share to Salv’ias. He wanted to help out but he wasn’t good at anything! He’d thought about asking Leeteuk Sunbaenim for advice but it was embarrassing to talk about.

Kris continued to work on the stage. Hammering and sawing things into place. He enjoyed creating things with his bare hands. But as he worked away in the hot sun he felt as if someone else should be there beside him. He felt as if there was a person missing, someone he could share things with and talk to about anything. Whoever this person was he gravely missed them.

~~~
“Hyung?” Sungmin asked.
“Hyung are you home?” Ryeowook asked when there was no answer.
Sungmin and Ryeowook were standing outside Leeteuk’s small cottage. They wanted to speak to their wise leader about their feelings and it didn’t help that the older man wasn’t answering the door.
“LEETEUK HYUNG!” Sungmin shouted.
“Maybe he’s gone out?” Ryeowook suggested.
“Or maybe he’s ignoring us” Sungmin said pouting.
“Hyung, do you really think Teukie hyung would be ignoring us?” Ryeowook said worriedly.
“Wookie, of course he wouldn’t ignore us” Sungmin said, comforting his dongsaeng.
“Wait a minute. Sungmin, do you hear that?” Ryeowook asked.
Sungmin stopped talking and listened. He could hear it to. It sounded as if someone was sobbing around the corner.
Sungmin and Ryeowook peeked around the corner of the house and spotted there leader with his head buried in his hands. He was shaking and it was obvious the older Wood Elf was crying.
“Hyung” Ryeowook said gently as he sat beside Leeteuk.
“What’s wrong?” Sungmin asked, taking a seat on the other side of him.
Leeteuk looked up at the two and gave them the most convincing smile he could.
“I-I’ll be alright” he said “Now what brings you two here?”
“Hyung, you know you can always talk to us” Ryeowook said, trying to encourage Leeteuk to open up to them.
“Yeah, you always listen to us when we need it so now we’re going to listen to you” Sungmin added.
“Well… okay then” Leeteuk said with a hint of uncertainty hidden in his tone “I just don’t want you two to worry. Not when the festival is so near”
“Leeteuk hyung, it’s okay. You can tell us” Ryeowook encouraged.
“Well… I feel horrible” Leeteuk began “There’s a longing in my heart. I feel like I’m waiting for someone but I don’t know who or where this person is. I just… don’t think I can take this anymore”
“Hyung! That’s exactly what we came to talk to you about” Ryeowook said.
“This is bad” Leeteuk murmured “Hankyung and Donghae have talked with me about this as well. It’s most likely happening to everybody and right before the festival too”
“Hyung, I’m sure that if these people do exist they’ll find us” Sungmin said, reassuring Salv’ias’s leader.
“You’re right Sungmin ah. We need to focus on having a good time at the festival” Leeteuk agreed.
“Well take care hyung. Wookie and I are going to cook for tomorrow” Sungmin said.
“Alright, I’ll meet you tomorrow at the stage before the festival” Leeteuk said, standing from his place on the ground.
“Okay Leeteuk hyung. See you then and I hope you’re feeling a little better” Ryeowook said.
“You too” Leeteuk said.
Once his two dongsaengs had left he went down to his favourite spot and sat by the river. He couldn’t help but think about the person who he has been missing. He wandered if they’d ever meet and if the other missed him as well.
Then it came to him. It was a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach. Somehow he knew everything was going to be okay. He knows he can trust this person with his life. He knows that if the people of his planet just hang in there for a while, the people they are missing will come soon enough.
~~~

“K-Kiseop hyung!” someone called urgently.

Kevin turned towards the door and he gasped.

“Is Donghae alright?” he asked.

Chanyeol was struggling to carry his hyung through the door of the hospital.

Chanyeol shook his head “He spotted an apple high in the tree and climbed up to pick it but he fell. I think his leg is broken”

“Lay him down on the bed and I’ll go get Kiseop hyung” Kevin instructed.

Chanyeol did as he was told and carefully placed Donghae down on the hospital bed while Kevin went into the back room.

“Hyung” Kevin said calmly, peeking his head into Kiseop’s office.

“Yes Kevin ah?” Kiseop asked, looking up from his notebook.

“Donghae hyung fell and I think he may have broken something” Kevin informed.

“Donghae should be more careful” Kiseop commented.

Kiseop stood up and put on his white coat. He walked over to Kevin and pecked his cheek.

“I love you Kevin… you complete me” Kiseop whispered.

Kevin shuddered and watched as Kiseop walked out of the room and into the ward. He knows being with Kiseop is wrong. He could sense it wasn’t right.

Kiseop and Kevin had only just started to see each other the previous day. They agreed to be together because they had both been feeling heartbroken and upset so they thought if they had each other everything would be okay. Kiseop might act like everything is fine but Kevin knows it’s not.

“Donghae ah, how are you feeling?” Kiseop asked.

Donghae shook his head, hissing in pain.

He took one look at Donghae’s leg and nodded to himself. It didn’t take a genius to figure out it was broken.

“You’re going to have to rest here for a few weeks” Kiseop concluded “And I’m going to have to elevate your leg hyung”

“B-But… what about the festival” Donghae whined.

“Maybe next year Donghae hyung” Kiseop said.

Donghae sighed and let doctor Kiseop elevate his leg above the bed.

“Do you need anything to drink hyung?” Kevin asked.

“Just a glass of water please”

Kevin mustered up a friendly smile and hurried off to get his patient something to quench his thirst.

“I can’t believe I’m missing the festival” Donghae said to himself, pouting.

~~~
It was the day of the festival. It was still very early in the morning and not to many people were awake at this hour. Leeteuk was wide awake though. He couldn’t contain his excitement as he was looking forward to watching over his dongsaengs while they had a good time. He loved to see their delighted faces as they enjoyed the day that only came once a year.
Leeteuk grabbed his small bag and strolled out of his small house and headed towards the small village. It was time to visit the people of Salv’ias and wake them for the day ahead. He enjoyed checking up on everyone. It gave him a chance to chatter away happily about random things that were on his mind.
First he would visit Donghae. He always loved talking to Donghae. They’d always talk about the strangest things that were swimming through their minds.
He walked down the street where he came across Chanyeol chatting with Kris and Hoon. They both turned around when they heard Leeteuk’s footsteps approaching.
“Ahjussi!” Chanyeol exclaimed.
“How are you hyung?” Hoon asked.
Leeteuk laughed at Chanyeol’s greeting.
“I’m fine now Hoon ah” Leeteuk smiled “How are you?”
“Not so fine hyung… but I’ll manage” Hoon replied.
“Let me guess, you’re missing something?” Leeteuk asked.
“How did you know?” Hoon asked.
“Well, It’s come to my knowledge that the people of Salv’ias are having bad feelings, like they’re missing something from their heart” Leeteuk tried to explain.
“Really? I’m feeling like that too. I thought that it was just me…” Chanyeol said.
“I think it’s all of us” Hoon said “I don’t like these feelings at all hyung. I want them to go away”
“Just be patient you two. I’ve been having feelings…” Leeteuk said with a hint of a smile.
“What do you mean hyung?” Hoon asked curiously.
“ I was sitting down by the river and I felt something… I felt good. I know these people we are missing miss us just as much as we do. They’ll come to find us! So just relax” Leeteuk explained.
“How can you be so sure?” Hoon asked.
“I’m your leader! I know everything~” Leeteuk sang.
“I trust you ahjussi~” Chanyeol sang back.
“Only if you’re sure about it…” Hoon said softly.
“Good, now get ready for the festival! Isn’t this exciting? By the way, where’s Donghae?”
“Oh, A-Ahjussi… Donghae fell from a tree and his leg is broken. He won’t be able to go to the festival this year” Chanyeol explained.
“He what?” Leeteuk asked in disbelief “Right before the festival?”
“Yeah, he’s pretty upset about it. He was the one who was looking forward to it the most…” Chanyeol said.
“I have to go see him then! He’ll need some cheering up” Leeteuk said with a nod.
“See you hyung” Hoon said, giving Leeteuk a hug.
“Yeah, bye Ahjussi” Chanyeol said, about to walk off.
“What? So you’re not going to give me a hug?” Leeteuk asked, pretending to sound upset.
“I’m sorry hyung!” Chanyeol said, wrapping Leeteuk in a tight hug.
Leeteuk smiled at his two dongsaengs and left for the hospital.
