Because most of the time, he would come home to the scent of fried meat and the sound of whisk stirring in the kitchen. And with that, he instantly knew that Fei was definitely cooking up a storm whether it’s for him especially, or it’s because of something special.

Then, Minjun would silently creep on behind her and hugged her from behind. That would make her yelp in surprise and she would begin to freak out. He would laugh at her and she would blush in embarrassment. (And then, he would earn a slap on his tough forearm.) In return, she would make him help her out by cutting the vegetables or help her to stir the soup that was simmering in her favourite pot.

After taking a shower and all, he would return to the kitchen and all the food was already on the table. The both of them would then sit right next to each other and began to eat together. While eating, he would ask her to feed him and Fei, with her cheeks reddening because she was shy, would take a spoonful of the dish and feed it to him gently. And Minjun would tell her that the dish tasted a hundred times tastier if she fed him. He earned another smack on his forearm. But still, she voluntarily fed him a couple of spoonful’s of the dish and she would still blush. He chuckled, because moments like this were such a joyous thing for him.

Minjun loved her so much and always will.

But nowadays, he comes home to empty silence overwhelming the apartment. No sounds of the pans knocking into each other or the smell of kimchi fried rice. Nothing. And this scares the hell out of Minjun. The pain in his heart, as if there’s emptiness inside that can’t be healed.

He walks over to the fridge and he notices the note that is clipped on by a magnet. His finger traces the carbon marks on the blue paper.

He still remembers how she is supposed to be in China, more than happy that she's meeting her parents and friends. She’s supposed to be back here tomorrow. But, humans can only plan and only God can make it happen. Fei met with an accident while on her way to a supermarket that was just so close to her parents’ house. His heart fell down to the bottom of his stomach and he felt like a knife had just stabbed him when he received the call. He still feels the sting of the pain in his heart right now.

He walks away from the kitchen, away from the place where everything is supposed to be happy. And yet, his tears still fall.

He misses her so much but whatever he does, he knows that she can’t return to him.
