Honey Tangerine

A few weeks had passed and although the two girls kept a little distance between them, it wasn't as awkward from before. They were also busy preparing for a school event where different clubs including music club and dance club are expected to perform so they were able to distract themselves and keep their minds preoccupied. While practicing her music piece, Wendy couldn't help but think about breaking up with Kai. He's a great guy and everything, but there's just something that's missing. The happiness she felt in the beginning wasn't as strong now like everything went stagnant between them in a matter of weeks.

"I need you now. It's something important." Kai had this uneasy expression on his face. "Let's go somewhere quiet."

Wendy initially thought about him wanting to make out in the janitor's closet because they've done that a few times, but he looked too serious for a make out sesh. He led her to the same janitor's closet she's thinking and locked the door.

Joohyun's really late for practice. If Mr. Kim hadn't stalled the students, she wouldn't be running like crazy in the hallway, thank god no one was around to reprimand her. While dashing through the never ending hallway, she saw Wendy and Kai enter the janitor's closet. Of course she knows what happens in that godforsaken corner and even though she said she wants Wendy to be happy, she can't really feel genuine happiness when the love of her life's being touched by another.

"I have something to say, but what do you need me for?"

"It's about me. Something personal. Promise me you won't judge?" Kai was very nervous and it's obvious judging by his movements.

Wendy tried to make light of the conversation, "Yeah, it would be really funny though if you tell me something like you're gay or something because we're literally in a closet and you'd be coming out literally and figuratively."

"I'm bi." He blurted out and Wendy didn't catch what he said right away. It took her a few seconds before reacting to what he said.

"Oh."

"Yeah."

"That's great...I was just--anyway, I'm glad you trust me enough to let me know about you." Wendy said cheerily. "Was that all you want to talk about with me?"

"Please don't hate me for this, but I actually want to break up."

"Huh..."

"Okay, you have to understand there's nothing wrong with you, it's just me. Don't even think that you're inadequate or whatever because you've been the best girlfriend ever even though we only dated for a short while. You're a great person and you're someone I'd like to have in my life for a long time, but our relationship is just not gonna work for me right now. There are lots of things about myself that I'm still trying to figure and understand and I don't want to risk hurting you in the process."

"I understand...actually I've been meaning to tell you that I want to break up, you just beat me to it. I feel the same way too, you know? Lately I've been feeling confused and stressed out because there's a lot going on and you've been such a great support to me. I felt really bad thinking about breaking up with you, but I guess we're both on the same page about this."

"Yeah...This must've been the most peaceful break up I've ever experienced." He nervously laughed as he brought her into a hug.  "We can still be friends, right? No hard feelings?"

"Yeah."

"And Wendy, can we just keep our break up a secret for now? I just need a little time before I come out to my parents."

"Sure thing."

Joohyun immersed herself into dancing. The practice room was the only place at school where she felt at ease knowing Wendy won't suddenly pop out of nowhere or walk in anytime. She and Wendy have shared so much that it kind of felt nice having her own space where she can just be calm and not think about anything related to her best friend.

"Who wants to cover my part for the short dance break in the end?" Momo asked while watching them dance. If she hadn't stepped on a banana peel earlier and injured her ankle, she would be Seulgi's partner.

"Joo should do it, she's a fast learner." Seulgi pointed towards her friend who was caught off guard.

"Wha--"

"Great! Stay for a little longer so I can help you practice. Everyone can go."

Joohyun rolled her eyes at Seulgi who looked so proud of herself for what she just did.

After a few hours of practicing, Momo finally let them go. She was tired and sweaty and all she wanted was to plop down on her bed and sleep. While walking alone in the hallway towards the exit, she looked at the turn where the music room is located. The music club's just as busy as them and she wondered if Wendy's home already but then she remembered she has a boyfriend who can take care of her.

"Joohyunnie?" Joohyun turned around too fast not expecting to hear that voice. Just a second ago she was thinking of her.

"Hey, what are you still doing here?"

"I just finished practicing."

"It's late, where's Kai? Isn't he going to drive you home?"

"No. He's umm...busy. The bus...I'll just take it."

"Just ride with me, I'll take you home." Wendy didn't turn down the offer and followed her best friend towards the parking lot.

Joohyun wondered if something happened between the couple. Wendy was unusually quiet, but maybe she just didn't want to start a small talk. She didn't want to overthink things and just focused herself on driving.

"I hope your performance go well tomorrow." Wendy said awkwardly.

"Thanks, good luck to your band too. Heard you're gonna play the whole day."

"Not whole day because my lungs would fall off if that were to happen, it's just three sets, you know? Once in the morning and twice in the afternoon."

A smile crept out on her lips, "Seriously...it's the same ."

"It's not, when you say--"

"My god have you always been this annoying? Can't believe I've put up with your annoying for years." Joohyun giggled.

Wendy hit her arm playfully and smiled like a child in her seat. It didn't take long for them to finally reach her home. Just before she opened the car door, she thought maybe now's a great time to start rebuilding their friendship again. She was a bit skeptical asking, but what the hell right? "Joohyunnie, are you still free?"

Even though all she wants is to go home, take a shower and sleep, she just can't resist the girl next to her. Her mind's telling her to say no, but when it comes to Wendy, she'd stop being reasonable and do the exact opposite. "Yeah, I can hangout for a while."

Wendy asked her to drive to their spot. The two girls were seated on the backseat of the car and while Joohyun was watching the sky turn dark, the other girl couldn't stop fidgeting in her seat. Just by a quick observation, Joohyun knew Wendy wanted to get close and invade her personal space because she's that clingy and Joohyun has been a victim of that said clinginess since second grade.

"I won't bite, you know?"

"I know but--"

"If you're gonna act weird, I'll act weird too."

"Okay." Wendy scooted closer and timidly looped her arm with Joohyun's. She then whispered with hesitation, "I kind of missed doing this you."

"I missed you too, dummy." Joohyun wouldn't deny and say it didn't make her heart flutter because it did. "Things may have turned crazy because of you know...but I'm still me. I'm your best friend. Well I hope I still am."

"You still are. I'm happy that you're always trying to protect me."

"We can always start fresh, Seungwannie. We should just let time do the work. We'll get over it like our past fights." Joohyun faked a smile yet again. The more she say those words out loud, the more she feels stupid hearing it come out of her own damn mouth. The other girl turned quiet and averted her attention somewhere else. "We should go home, we both need rest for tomorrow's event."

The music club's preparing for their second performance when Wendy suddenly felt nervous because of how packed the auditorium was compared to their first set in the morning. She's always like this every single time she's performing in front of a big audience and it didn't help when the person beside her accidentally hit the music sheet stand causing it to fall and attract unwated attention. All eyes darted to them and she wanted to throw up in that second.

"It's okay!" Somebody from the audience yelled and she knew exactly whose voice it was. Those words were simple, too simple but enough to comfort her like a pat in the back. Joohyun's worry washed away and got replaced with relief the moment Wendy cracked a small smile.

A few minutes after, when everything's settled, they started to play. Watching Wendy from the day she started learning the instrument up to now that she's a key player of the school band made Joohyun extremely proud of her. Through her natural talent and dedication, her best friend became really good in playing the saxophone and not to mention the dozens of instruments she could play too. It's fascinating how she could play music and make people feel things, well, make her feel things. It's making her fall for Wendy more the way her eyes slowly close when she loses herself in the melody like she's in her own world, her plump crimson lips that's latching on to the mouthpiece--it's driving her crazy and curious about how they tasted, and those skilled fingers, those highly skilled fingers that press the keys so fluidly, so expertly that the saxophone couldn't help itself but to make y and flirty sounds and--

"Are you okay?" Seulgi suddenly tugged on her arm, breaking her out of her reverie. "I thought you were dead for a second. Yeri's been asking if you want candy three times and I saw you weren't breathing."

"Oh my god you guys, just shut up for a minute. I'm trying to watch the band."

"More like watching the girl who plays the sax. Girl, that sax has a better sax life than you, look at how she plays it."

"Jesus Seulgi, why would you say that?" Joohyun hid her face in embarrassment, turning away from the laughing bear beside her.

One of the many great qualities of Joohyun is that every time she's interested with something, she always tries her best to be good at it. She doesn't set herself an expectation of being perfect at it, but rather better than average. Just before the dance club's performance, she received a text from Wendy telling her another good luck and how excited she was to see her perform for the first time. Right, she almost forgot she just joined the club a month ago when she was distracting herself from the issue. But despite joining the club late, she's actually not bad of a dancer, she's always liked dancing and her Just Dance on her old Xbox could attest to that. When the lights dimmed on the stage, suddenly she felt nervous, which rarely happens, just thinking about Wendy watching her perform for the first time made her feel lightheaded.

Wendy was so excited that she fought people on her way who tried to take a seat on the center of front row. She literally scared away some of the seventh grader boys seated at the front and snatched the space from them. When the members came out and posed before the music started, she clapped like a seal and hooted with everyone. Her eyes quickly pinned on her best friend and she couldn't help but admire how cool she looks. It's refreshing to see because she's never seen Joohyun look so focused and just different than her usual self. The way her body flowed with the rhythm and the sharpness of her detailed moves really showed how much effort and time she put into the dance. Joohyun sent her a playful wink and she almost died right there and then. Someone from the back just had to ruin the moment when they said that Bae Joohyun winked at them, but Wendy wasn't too bothered by that because she knows very well that it's really meant for her. The lights dimmed again and a spotlight hit the center showing Joohyun and Seulgi next to each other. The duo were perfect partners, Joohyun's fluidity complemented Seulgi's sharp and powerful technique and they just looked so mesmerizing on stage. Wendy was jealous. Jealous how Joohyun touched Seulgi's body and ran her fingertips on her bare toned stomach like she owned her and willingly let the other girl do the same and touch her on places Wendy had never imagined her to be so comfortable with it being .

Wendy didn't notice she was gripping hard on her chair until the lights , showing that everybody was just as stunned as her after that really hot performance. The dance club gathered in the middle and took a bow while people clapped for them.

"How was that?" Joohyun smugly asked while they were walking together in the hallway. Wendy couldn't even look straight at her best friend's eyes and not blush while speaking to her. "I looked cool, huh? But you know what's cooler? I learned the choreo for the last part in just five hours. Damn Seungwannie, are you even aware that the dance god is your best friend?"

Wendy timidly smiled, "It's good to know you're enjoying your newly found hobby. The performance was really great, especially yours and Seulgi's, you guys...looked good together."

"I know! Speaking of, where the hell is that bear? We're supposed to go together to Jennie's party. I'm so jealous of that girl, her parents aren't always around and they let her throw big parties. Anyway, are you and Kai coming too?" Shoot, Wendy hadn't told her that they had broken up a few days ago. It actually slipped from her mind and she wanted to keep her word to Kai of not telling anyone about it.

"About that--"

"There you guys are! Y'all are so small I couldn't spot you from the crowd." Seulgi draped her arms on the besties and pushed them towards the exit.

"Don't even think about getting a ride home from me later."

"I'm kidding! By the way, I just saw Kai leaving with Sehun."

"Oh um yeah...I know about that." Wendy pursed her lips and Joohyun didn't fail to notice that, she knew very well that's a sign Wendy's hiding something. "I'm gonna go home, I'm not really in the mood to party."

"What? Oh come on, Wendy, live a little. The whole music club's gonna be there too and I heard Jennie invited college peeps. Maybe we can meet hot and matured men there, yeah?"

"Seriously? Seulgi, stop poisoning my best friend's mind. She's already in a relationship." Joohyun said as she turned the ignition of her car.

"I'm just saying--"

"F-fine, I'll go." Wendy sighed in her seat feeling defeated.

"Really? The hot men really convinced you, huh? Didn't know you had it in you, Son." While Seulgi was busy chirping, Joohyun was eyeing her best friend at the backseat through the rearview mirror. She's sure something had happened, she just don't know what that was, yet.

It's only seven and the whole house was already packed. Some who couldn't hold their alcohol were already passed out in the couch, others were making out, and some were like animals while playing games. The trio went on and said hi to their schoolmates. Seulgi left the group eventually and caught up with her other friends who were also at the party. Joohyun and Wendy sat on the couch for a minute, but the latter got up to get herself a drink.

"Would you like a beer too?"

"Nah, my stomach's acting up right now." Joohyun said while scrolling on her phone.

"Okay, be right back."

Seulgi wasn't kidding about Jennie inviting college students to her party. While filling her cup with beer, one of the guys came up to her and told her she's cute, it didn't flatter her but rather scared her. She didn't even finish getting the cup full and awkwardly said bye and never looked back. When she got back to the living room, Joohyun was still seated on the couch talking with Momo. The Japanese girl was nodding while her best friend's talking, she couldn't really hear what they were talking about but it seemed like it's an important matter. She stood away from them giving them privacy and only sat back in the couch when the other girl left.

"Something wrong?"

"No, actually. I can't believe she just told me she wanted me to be a core member of the group."

"Oh my god congratulations!" Wendy was going to fully hug her best friend like a koala but it turned into a side hug when a schoolmate came up them.

"Hey, would you guys like to join us?"

Joohyun and Wendy followed the guy near the fireplace. Surprisingly, a bunch of people from the music club were also playing truth or drink so naturally they urged Wendy to join, leaving Joohyun seated outside the circle because she refused to play. She was a little worried about her best friend, knowing the nature of the game. Put a bunch of drunk teenagers in a circle and they do stupid .

"Chanyeol, truth or drink, would you ever hook up with someone from this group of people?"

Chanyeol laughed earning loud hoots from everyone, "Yes!"

"Junmyeon, truth or drink, among the members of the dance club, who do you think is the hottest?"

The boy had too much to drink, his drunkenness prompted him to spew too much answers, "I personally think Kang Seulgi got the best figure, but damn, Bae Joohyun's really y earlier." He turned to Joohyun and playfully whispered, "I have a crush on you, let's go out sometime."

Joohyun grimaced at his boldness and turned her attention to her best friend who was next to be interrogated.

"Oh this is going to be juicy. Wendy, truth or drink, is it true that Kai's--"

Junmyeon hasn't even finished asking the question when Wendy drank from her cup without thinking twice. Jesus, why did they have to ask that kind of question? Everyone was bummed out so she had to say something at least to keep the hype going, "I'll leave it to you guys' imagination." She said it so playfully the room became rowdy. She couldn't even look at Joohyun who was probably thinking that she really did it with Kai which wasn't the case.

Another round passed and another--with her being questioned about her relationship with Kai and her downing every drink to avoid answering them while also telling naughty comments on the side to keep the people happy. When she was pouring her fourth cup, she noticed Joohyun laughing with one of the college girls and it seemed like they're liking each other's company. She got really dizzy after the third cup so she stood up from the group to get away from the area as soon as possible, she didn't need to see any more of that.

It took a while before Joohyun noticed that her best friend's missing from the group. She was too engrossed talking with this girl, Lisa, who got her mistaken as her girlfriend who's supposedly overseas at the moment. But maybe that's just her trying to flirt her way, who knows? She cursed herself for not paying attention because Wendy might do something she's going to regret in the morning. Joohyun stood from her seat and it's scary how she looked like she would murder Junmyeon in his sleep for asking too many lewd questions.

Lisa tapped her arm and asked, "Are you okay? Did I say something wrong?"

"No, it's my best friend. She left the game."

"Maybe she just went to talk with friends. Don't worry about her. Would you like to go someplace quiet instead?"

Joohyun had been having troubles the past few weeks, she'd been thinking about moving on and forgetting her feelings for Wendy because she'd rather not confess to avoid ruining their friendship. She would just endure the thought of her being with someone that's not her because their friendship was more important than stupid feelings.

Wendy entered a bedroom down the hall, unsure if it's Jennie's room or a guest room but she didn't really care since she's so dizzy. All she wanted was to escape and well, freshen up, playing truth or drink got her sweating. She noticed a door near the closet and assumed it's a bathroom so she hurriedly opened the door and the next thing she saw wasn't what she's expecting to see in Jennie's bathroom.

Joohyun could use a little space. She's walking awkwardly because Lisa's been latched onto her arm since leaving the group in the living room. The older girl's leading her down the hall and she's actually nervous because she's never made out with someone she likes before let alone with a person she just met like thirty minutes ago. Lisa didn't even bother to knock on the door and just swung the thing like she's in a hurry to be alone with her. Joohyun awkwardly smiled at her and when she averted her gaze and looked inside, everything went blank.
