Chapter 2

Out of Your League

"Well there goes my pan." Joshua tossed the burnt metal into the trash can and put the other utensils in the sink.

Sojung scrapped the burnt remains of what was supposed to be fried kimchi into the trash. She felt upset to say the least.

Once Joshua turned to see her sullen expression, he couldn't help but giggle, which made her sulk even more.

"It's okay" he said. "You don't need to be so hard on yourself."

"I just don't know what went wrong, I've made this numerous times before, why did I have to mess up this time?" she muttered. "And now we don't have any dinner."

"Hey, don't worry about it, I know a great chicken place, I think you'll like it. It's a little ways away from here, but I really think you should try it. What do you say, hm?"

She looked at him, her pout slowly turned into a smile. "Alright, let's go."

After about thirty minutes of driving, Joshua suddenly stopped the car.

"What is it?" asked Sojung.

"Stay here, I'm going to go check something out." Joshua got out of the car and carefully neared the apartment across the street, where one man seemed to have pinned another to the wall. One of the men looked much more muscular than the other and could easily kill him if he wanted to, so when the man raised his fist he knew he had to intervene.

"Hey!" he called out. Both men turned to him, and the buff man immediately let go of the other, as if he was a child caught doing something he shouldn't have.

"What are you two doing?"

"L-listen, it's not what you think it is." Joshua didn't understand why he looked so timid, a stark contrast from the animosity he was showing moments ago.

Joshua took a closer look at his face and then the realization hit him. "You. Weren't you fired a few months ago?"

"You're the vice president's son right?" he asked.

"Yes, and I believe my father terminated you because you were charged for assault, is that right?"

The man lowered his head before speaking again. "This guy" he pointed to the other man. "His father owes me 15 million won. He promised that he would pay me back in 7 months. It's been almost 3 years now and he's nowhere to be found, he just told me that his son would take care of it and disappeared. Yet this little rat keep prolonging and avoiding it."

Joshua turned to the other man who's breathing had just calmed down. "I don't have enough."

"Where's all your father's money huh? Last I checked he was loaded, where did it all go?!"

"I don't know."

"Sir, if he is not the one who owes you, you do not have the right to demand it from him, nor are you able to sue him" said Joshua.

The man looked at the ground and suddenly broke into tears, surprising both of them.

"My wife... she has cancer and needs treatment, and I can't afford it. If I can't get it, she will die."

Joshua thought for a moment, and then put a hand on his shoulder. "Seeing as you were once our employee, and a good one too, I will help you out with this. But I hope you won't get into any more fights in the future."

The man looked at him with disbelief. "You're really going to help me?"

He nodded.

"Thank you, thank you so much."

After he left Joshua turned to the other man. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, thanks."

"You don't have a bunch of these guys on your back right?"

"None that are this violent" he said in a joking tone.

"I see. I'm Joshua by the way" he extended his hand.

Sojung couldn't help but get a little worried. Joshua had been gone for a little while, and he had left without explanation, so she decided to get out of the car. She spotted him across the street talking to someone, she couldn't see clearly who it was, but they seemed to be friends judging by how they interacted.

Once she saw Joshua walking towards the car, she got back inside.

"Who were you talking to?" she asked curiously.

"Someone I just saved from getting pummelled into a pulp."

"What?"

"Don't worry about it, let's go get that chicken."

-

Jeonghan awoke to the blaring sound of his alarm. He groaned as he reached over to turn it off, only to accidentally slap his phone off his bedside table. He sighed and finally got out of bed and turned off his alarm, then sleepily made his way to the bathroom.

He splashed some cold water on his face and looked in the mirror, his eyes looked tired from the late shift he had worked the night before.

Good thing that Joshua guy saved me or I'd probably be in the hospital right now, he thought to himself.

After getting ready, he headed to the subway station to go to his first job of the day.

"Good morning Mrs. Yang!" he said as he bowed to the old woman.

"Oh, hey Jeonghan! You're an early bird aren't ya? Why don't you help me stock these remaining shelves and I'll go over the list of tasks for today."

"Okay." Jeonghan went to put his stuff down and put on the employee uniform, and then went over to help Mrs. Yang with the shelves. The tasks were surprisingly fun since he got to interact with the pets, and the morning went by fairly quickly.

Five minutes before his shift was over, a girl came into the store so he greeted her and asked if she needed any help.

"I'm just looking for a harness for a small dog, one that's a little more lightweight and- hey I know you! You're Seungkwan's friend right?"

"Yep" he replied.

"Yeah I've see you working at Seungkwan's mother's bakery, you're Jeonghan right?"

He nodded, he thought she looked kind of familiar to him. "Are you a friend of his?"

"Yeah we go to the same university."

"Are you a voice major as well?"

"Mhm, I'm Eunbi by the way, it's nice to meet you!"

"You too" he said. He noticed how warm and friendly her smile was, and took a liking to her immediately. "Now let me show you the harnesses."

After Eunbi left the store, she headed back to her dorm to get ready for her afternoon class.

"Where did you run off to?" asked Yewon, her roommate.

"Oh I just went to get Angkko a new harness."

"Then why do you look so happy?"

"Huh? What do you mean?"

Yewon paced around her and examined her from head to toe.

"Yah, what are you doing?"

"Did you... meet someone?"

"No, I told you I just went to the pet store. Now leave me be I need to head to class soon."

Yewon giggled causing Eunbi to turn to her. "What are you laughing about?"

"Oh Eunbi, I've known you for long enough. I could tell as soon as I walked in that you were completely smitten."

Yewon looked shocked. "Smitten? You're ridiculous."

"So who did you meet? Come on, tell me."

"I didn't meet anyone! I just happened to see one of Seungkwan's friends working at the pet store."

"Aha! It's Moon Bin right?"

"No! He doesn't work there, and I would never in a million years like him."

"So who?"

Eunbi was quiet for a moment. "You know that guy who works at Seungkwan's Mother's bakery?"

"Yoon Jeonghan? You like him?!"

"Well like is a strong word, I don't really know him."

"You sure look like you like him."

"Dude have you seen him up close? He's so pretty, beautiful even."

"Hmm maybe you could get Seungkwan to introduce you two, he's not that much older right?"

"Only three years, but I don't know how my dad would feel about it."

"Hey, he let you pursue music didn't he? I think he's loosened up a lot, and you're super responsible and diligent with your studies, I don't think he'd say no. Besides, you're an adult now."

"He's probably already dating someone."

"Never hurts to ask."

Eunbi felt her cheeks turn red at the possibility of having a relationship, she had never done anything of the sort due to her parent's strictness, but she thought she had earned to right to make her own decisions.

"Uhm, I'll think about it. I'm gonna go to class now."

Eunbi headed off to her music theory class, her least favourite class.

"Eunbi-ya!" She turned around and saw Seungkwan waving her over to where he was sitting.

"Hey, did you do the homework?" he asked.

"What homework?"

"Aish did you forget? The video about harmony and the questions that he posted, you didn't do it?"

"Just messing with you, of course I did it, who do you think I am?"

"Okay good, can you explain it to me then? I didn't get it."

She sighed and opened up her homework, and gave Seungkwan a lighting speed crash course before the teacher came in.

After class, the two headed outside for some fresh air, since the 3 hour long class was so mentally draining.

"I'm meeting with Hansol at Cafe de Paris, do you wanna come?"

"Yeah sure" she was pensive for a moment and Seungkwan could tell she had something to say.

"Do you have something on your mind?" he asked.

"So uh, I ran into someone when I went to the pet store today."

"Oh? Who'd you see?"

"Jeonghan."

"Oh yeah, he works there now."

"Is he single?"

Seungkwan raised his eyebrows at her question, and understood what she was getting at. "Yeah... he is. What, are you interested?"

"Perhaps, do you think you could introduce us?" she looked at him with hopeful eyes.

Seungkwan hesitated for a moment, but he couldn't disappoint his friend. "Yeah sure, why not?"

Eunbi beamed. "Thanks Seungkwan!"

"But uh, I should tell you something. He sort of got out of a relationship, like, yesterday, so if he doesn't agree right away don't take it personally."

"Oh" she said. "Never mind then, it's probably too soon."

"It's okay I'll just ask him, I won't say it's you though."

"Alright, thank you Seungkwan, you're the best!"

"Yeah, I already know that."

-

A few days later, when Jeonghan was working a shift at the bakery, Seungkwan decided to bring up the question.

"Hyung, you thirsty?" Seungkwan passed him a cup of tea.

"Thanks."

"So, how've you been?"

Jeonghan raised an eyebrow at the odd question. "Okay I guess?"

"Okay I'll get straight to the point. So, how would you feel if I introduced to you one of my classmates?"

"Like, as in..."

"As in a date. Only if you're up for it of course."

"I... I don't know."

"If you're worried about money I can assure you that she is no gold digger, she won't dump you for some random rich guy."

"It's not that, I just... I'm not exactly in a good situation right now."

"What do you mean?"

"It's just... I have all these debt collectors on my back, my father could return any day, and when that happens I'll have to deal with him as well. I don't want to drag someone else into my troubles, maybe it's best that I'm on my own."

"Hyung... we all have our burdens to carry, when you share your life with someone you share each other's troubles, that's part of all relationships. You shouldn't be on your own because of your debt, you deserve love just like everyone else."

"I just don't want to be a source of worry all the time."

"If someone worries about you it means they care about you, it's not a bad thing. You worry about others too."

"Only because I'm worried you won't graduate if you don't start studying" he said, lightening up the atmosphere a bit.

"Hey, why you gotta turn this back on me?"

He laughed. "Okay okay, I guess you're right. So, when are we meeting?"
