Part II: The Social Psychology of Emotion

Guilt and shame are very different, but many people use them interchangeably.

Shame is marked by avoidance, stemming from the appraisal of one’s self as flawed and awful and lacking. Guilt feels for the situation, which drives reparative action.

It’s guilt that makes Eunju put on that suit each night, and try to repair the little she can. Because the thought of having power running under her skin and doing nothing about it brings a feeling of nausea bubbling up until she can’t breathe. It’s come to the point that Eunju doesn’t even understand what she feels guilty for; just that she does, and that means she needs to fix something, whatever that may be.

So she tries.

Byun Baekhyun is wonderful.

Eunju had liked him the moment he had walked into the cafe with his friend. He was easy to talk to, with a cheerful disposition, bright features, a swoon-worthy smile and was incredibly patient and understanding after she’d spilled coffee on him. He had a mom-would-adore-at-first-meeting personality and dad-would-call-son-in-law-before-marriage-talk way of getting along with people. Then they’d walked to class together and Eunju had liked him even more as he talked so animatedly about the role of the interpositus nucleus in conditioned responses that all she could think was he’s also kind of a nerd but in the cutest way possible.

She’s delighted when he asks her out three weeks later, and she doesn’t need to think to say yes.

When Baekhyun leads her to the two-seater bicycles, Eunju’s already convinced that this single date has bested any of the ones her ex has taken her on. She turns out to be right; Baekhyun’s extremely attentive, he’s packed adorable sandwiches for lunch and is altogether a joy to be around. They spend most of the morning biking down the riverside. Just when Eunju is starting to feel hungry, Baekhyun guides the bike into a park and they eat the food he’s packed for them. He has an entire picnic planned, and the sandwiches are honestly a cut higher than what she can make.

“Did you voluntarily pick five to nine shifts?” he asked around a strawberry. “Apart from Jongdae, I don’t think I know anyone else who would do that to themselves willingly.”

It’s kind of hard to explain my schedule will lead to questions that Eunju can’t answer (not unless she says I run around the city in a leather suit and superpowers at night), so she shrugs. “I’m a morning person. And I feel good about myself when I wake up early.” She squints at him. “Same to you, though.”

Baekhyun pushes his hair back in a way that’s unfairly attractive and lets out a slight laugh. “I’m more productive at that time. Although I think my body is used to running on caffeine.”

“I can see that,” she replies, a little drily, and Baekhyun has the sense to look chagrined when Eunju points at his thermos full of coffee.

A little while later, as they’re packing up their picnic, Baekhyun picks up her hand gently and points at her palm. “Where’s that from?”

Eunju blinks, looking down. The long white line runs across her palm from pinkie to thumb, an unfortunate accident when she’d first gotten her powers and had trouble adjusting. It’s an obvious

Chapter 5: omg im crying nooooo breadboy don't be sad :'(

And I think one reason why some people are SO pessimistic is because they're afraid of being let down, of their hopes being dashed to pieces. So it's just easier to assume the worst and never be let down by any expectations. :( And it breaks my heart to know that both Baekhyun and Eunju are suffering so much right now, especially since neither of them wanted this. T^T

also i love jongdae so much
he's literally the BEST best friend a person could ever have
pls be my best friend, jongdae :')

But ahhhh, my anxiety is SPIKING with every mention of Hwang Chisoo and the timer ticking down to the deadline. x___x Because who knows what that piece of garbage has planned and I feel like Baekhyun is so overwhelmed by his emotions right now, so it'll be easier for Hwang Chisoo to goad him into any traps that he's probably set. >___> And omg, SO MANY BOMB ATTACKS. THAT IS TERRIFYING. Q___Q THIS GUY IS ACTUALLY PSYCHO.

BUT AHHH, ELEKTRA CAME!! I knew she wouldn't be able to let Kinese go ahead without confronting him first. :') And I love that she chose not to use the voice-changer, that she wanted to talk to him as Eunju. She's human too, even with her powers, and she's still the same girl Baekhyun knew and loved before the big reveal. But omg, nooooo, all of Baekhyun's self-loathing is hurting me as well. ;~; Seeing him internally fall apart like this is breaking my heart into smithereens and I'm crying inside for him, because he's just so HURT by everything and he doesn't deserve to be in such pain. T^T

And oh my god, I love the points that Eunju brought up. They're so profound and I don't think I've ever deeply thought of revenge being a paradox like that. It's absolutely fascinating and I think the world would be a much better place if people weren't so blinded by NEEDING revenge, especially when it does just bring more hurt to everyone involved. :'( And ahhhh, the way that Eunju validated Baekhyun's feelings while still trying to steer him away from hurting himself even more got me MESSED UP. He's so lucky to have her and I'm just so relieved that they've reached this level of understanding before Baekhyun hurt himself even more. >___<

ALSO, QUEEN OF SUBVERTING EXPECTATIONS!! I really thought they'd confront Hwang Chisoo in the end, but I LOVE how the focus at the end was on Eunju helping Baekhyun take his first steps to healing himself instead. SCREW HWANG CHISOO ANYWAY. HE DOESN'T DESERVE ANY SCREENTIME, HAHA. But yeah, I'm SO happy and proud of Eunju for understanding and helping Baekhyun when he needed someone most, and of Baekhyun for allowing himself to accept help from someone he felt was against him since it's too easy to keep those blinders on and self-sabotage yourself. It was painful, but incredibly cathartic and necessary for both of them, and I know they'll be able to heal with each other's support after all of this. :')

i love this so much and how much thought you put into it and how you were able to make it flow so well, even within the word count constraints, and i hope breadboy and eunju live happily ever after this and now i miss breadboy even more and ahhhhh we still have over half a yr left until he returns but at least we have his sporadic tweets to hold onto while we wait :') but anyway YOU ARE THE BEST ILYSM AND THIS WAS ANOTHER FANTASTIC STORY FROM YOU AND I BOW DOWN TO YOUR GREATNESS!!
