Rio's eyes fluttered open as soon as her mobile phone rang. Lifting her head off the table, she raised her phone to her ear and answered the unknown number. "Hello?" She uttered, tiredness evident in her voice.
"Hi there, this Edogawa Hospital calling. We're looking for Yamada Rio."
"This is she." Rio replied, her gaze falling onto the clock in the staff room. It was already seven in the morning.
"You were Kitagawa Amu's emergency contact. We found your information in her bag when she arrived at the hospital late last night. We apologize for not being able to contact you sooner. Our hospital has been overwhelmed with many patients due to yesterday's incident."
"Is Amu okay?" The girl asked, her shoulders falling when she realized that her best friend had been transported to a hospital on the other side of the city.
"She's currently stable but she hasn't woken up yet. We heard from the first responders that they were able to save her because a good samaritan was able to seek immediate attention for her. According to the samaritan, she was pulled from the rubble so we ran a couple of scans but miraculously, she only suffered bruises and cuts. Once she wakes up, we'll run a few MRI tests just in case."
Rio immediately thought of Chinen and sighed in relief. "Thank you. Please let me know if you have any further updates. I'll visit her as soon as I can."
After she hung up the phone, she patted her face with both of her hands to wake herself up. Rio didn't have time to return to her apartment last night. Instead, she decided to spend the night at the hospital to save time on her commute since her next shift starts at 8 in the morning.
Rio made her way to her locker in the staff room and pulled out an emergency bag which she prepared for times like these. The bag contained everything she needed for a night at the hospital- like a toothbrush, a towel, and a clean change of clothes.
After rinsing up, she threw her white coat back on and stepped back out. Now that the emergency department had enough workers, she could finally return to her floor. The girl walked down the halls before stopping by her desktop to analyze one particular patient's status. As soon as she memorized everything she needed to know, she finally made her way to the patient's room in the VIP wing.
Rio stopped in front of the door and lowered her eyes at the name tag next to the door- YR for Yamada Ryosuke. Last evening, she spent three hours in the ER doing everything she could to save him. After his vitals were stabilized, she spent an additional three hours in this room, making sure that his life didn't slip through her fingers.
Although this room was Ryosuke's, Rio felt as if the initials applied to her as well, especially now that she's been assigned as his primary doctor, physician, nurse, and rehabilitation specialist.
"You can do this, Rio." She whispered to herself before finally pulling open the door. She knew that visiting hours at Tokyo Hospital began already from six in the morning, but she wasn't expecting to see a visitor so soon, let alone recognize the person.
"Chinen?" Rio uttered, her gaze falling onto the boy who sat in the chair next to the hospital bed.
Chinen's solemn expression immediately lit up when he recognized the girl standing by the entrance and he quickly made his way over to her.
"I saw what happened at the venue from the news." Rio began, closing the door behind her so that no other staff members could hear their conversation. She glanced over at Ryosuke and firmed her lips when she noticed that he hasn't woken up yet either. "I'm glad you're okay..."
“You too. I didn't know you worked at this hospital." He said, recalling the one time he met Rio and was surprised to hear about her occupation. "Are you Ryo's doctor?"
Rio nodded. "We... actually almost lost him yesterday,” She said, taking another glance at the boy's peaceful sleeping expression. "But he managed to pull himself through. He has a really bad broken ankle but other than a couple of bruises and deep stitched-up cuts, he should be okay. We'll still have to run a few more tests though once he wakes up."
"I see." Chinen nodded, scratching the back of his head. He lowered his eyes with a solemn expression then began again. "And... Amu? Do you, by any chance, know if she's here too? I haven't been able to get in touch with her."
"She's actually... at Edogawa Hospital. Our hospital went over capacity so they transferred the next group of patients there." Rio replied but paused when she suddenly noticed how strange his question was. "Wait, why did you ask that? I thought you were the one who saved Amu yesterday..."
The boy furrowed his eyebrows in confusion and shook his head. "No. I was with the rest of JUMP when the earthquake occurred."
Rio blinked her eyes and brought her fingers to her chin, pondering about the events from the day before.
"But if it wasn't you who saved her then who did...?"

Daiki waited for the visiting hours to come around the corner. As soon as eight o'clock came around the corner for visiting hours, he turned off the engine of his car before heading inside Edogawa hospital. Holding a small bouquet of orange carnations in his hand, he made his way to the front desk to request a visitor pass.
“Hi, I'm here to visit Amu Kitagawa” He requested, passing them his ID. The front desk receptionist froze for a brief second after taking a glance at his card.
"May I ask what is your relation to this patient?"
"We're friends," Daiki replied, hiding the bouquet behind his back. After receiving the pass, he hurried into the elevator before anyone else could suspect him of anything.
"5-07..." Daiki uttered to himself, passing by room after room until he finally found the one he was looking for. He gently knocked on the door and waited for a response but after a moment of not hearing a reply, he decided to invite himself in, closing the door behind him.
The boy's gaze immediately fell on Amu's sleeping expression and sighed in relief when he saw that she seemed to be doing much better than yesterday. He then walked himself over to her bed, stopping just next to it so that he could place the bouquet on the table next to her. After moving the chair closer, he sat in it and lowered his eyes, his gaze finally shifting onto his bandaged hand.
Daiki remembered how his heart fell to his stomach when he saw the shelf toppled over in front of him yesterday. The floor was still trembling beneath him when he went to work, desperately trying to remove the rubble.
He remembered cutting his hand against one of the broken glasses but the pain didn't stop him from finally getting to Amu. By the time he could reach her, he could barely feel her pulse. It even took him a while to finish making a clear path for both of them. When he was finally able to carry her out where the first responders were already tending to injuries, he thought that he had lost her already.
"Why did you save me?" Daiki whispered to her, folding his arms on Amu's hospital bed before laying his head on them. He glanced at her sleeping expression and felt his own eyelids become heavy within a matter of seconds. After staying up an entire night worrying about both Amu and his best friend, he finally allowed his body to catch up on the rest he needed.
About 30 minutes had passed when the girl's eyelashes fluttered before she opened them. Her head felt unusually heavy as she glanced around the room, confused as to how she ended up in the hospital.
It wasn't until she turned to her left when she noticed that a boy was resting his head on her bed. "Um..." Amu began, her voice immediately waking him up.
"Amu, you're awake..." Daiki greeted her, scratching the back of his head nervously. "How are you feeling?"
However, instead of answering his question, the girl raised an eyebrow and stared at him with a perplexed expression.
"Eh? How do you know who I am?"
"What do you mean?" Daiki replied, chuckling at the girl's question. "You told me your name back at the concert venue yesterday."
"What concert venue?"
The boy paused to glance about the room in confusion. After coming to a bad feeling that he wished wasn't true, he began again. "Amu, don't tell me, do you not remember me either?"
The girl shook her head. "I'm sorry but I don't believe we've met..."

Rio hanged up the phone after a brief call with Amu. She took a deep breath then stepped into Ryosuke's room, her eyes glancing around for a specific person. "Chii, do you have a second?" She whispered. "It's about Amu."
"Did she wake up?" Chinen asked, his expression filled with hope. However, after noticing Rio's solemn expression, his shoulders dropped immediately. "Rio, don't tell me.
