Prologue - Ssh... a boy...
Siren Song“Would you like to come out and see the sky, Matthew?” Father asked.
I looked up from the map of the world, my mind infested with it. Comprehending how big the world was and how small I was on my father's huge ship.
“Yes!” I said. He held my hand and left the deck. It was a dark, dark night. Father chuckled.
“Too bad, son. The sky is dark tonight. Too many clouds. Wanted to show you the stars.”
I looked up, tried to see the small openings between the clouds.
“I could see it, father! Over there!” I pointed.
“Yes, but I wanted to show you more. Usually, when the sky is clear... you can see it all. Stars, like diamonds spread before your very eyes. Down to the horizon. No end to it.”
I could only imagine what he meant. But I believed it must be the best sight, to make him look up dreamily as such. A crew called up for him and he had to get back.
“Matthew, let’s get back inside.”
But I was mesmerized. I didn’t follow him right away.
Ssh... a boy...
A voice whispered. It made me jump. I quickly looked around me. A ship crew asleep on the heaps of rope. And no one else. I would’ve shrugged it if I didn’t hear the song.
A beautiful, mesmerizing voice. Humming a song I’ve never heard before. It was beautiful. I walked up to the front of the ship. I wanted to check the waters. My small steps were shaky, still imbalanced against the sea. But I reached it and I could see the water. Dark.. endless. It gave me the shivers behind my neck. But the song... it’s beautiful. I want to hear more.
The dark sea... suddenly I could see the moon... slowly clearer on the water. The clouds must’ve moved from its way. It’s beautiful, glowing bright and round. I smiled. A song and the beautiful moon.
The sea was such a wonder.
“Matthew!” My father yelled. I quickly turned back, found him walking towards me in haste.
“Boy, I told you to come inside!” He held my arm. I quickly apologized, told him I wanted to see more of the stars. He sighed and carried me back to the deck.
“One day, son. One day you’ll explore the sea.” My father smiled at me before I sleep on his bed. The sea rocking me to my dreams, I dreamt of.... the water. Swimming in it. Like I could breathe in it.
Rosie asked me many things about the sea. I tried to think of everything... but everything was... reduced to one thing.
“The moon was very beautiful, Rosie!”
