Burden
Christmas CompanionAfter that wonderful dinner, they started packing up to go home. The children were lined up to give them a hug. In such a way, it became a healing to their team.
A great way to say thank you is to show that you appreciate the help.
There's nothing more fulfilling for them to see the smile on the every person's faces because of their act of helping them.
They haven't leave yet but Chorong already missed the atmosphere. She really had a great time with the new experience.
After that the volunteers proceeded on their own vehicles preparing to leave, everyone has that smile on their faces. Having a successful event lessen all the pain and tiredness they have.
Chorong was already on Bomi's car, patiently waiting for the latter who's talking with the chairman of the city.
"I'm not sure if Bomi unnie would have wanted me to talk about it with you. It's just I cared for her and I trust you enough. Hope it helps in some ways." Hayoung stated as she unlocked her car next to Bomi's.
"It helps." Chorong answered. "At least it helps me to understand her better. She's been hurt... It make some sense that she's distancing herself on any possibility of being hurt again."
Hayoung nodded and opened the passenger side of her car for Namjoo. She waited for Bomi to wave her goodbye before entering her own car and drove away.
When Bomi entered the car, an awkward silence settled between them when Chorong decided to break it.
"Thanks for letting me join you. I really had a great time." Chorong stated, initiating a normal conversation between them.
"I'm sure the team and the kids also had a great time with you."
"Thanks for your invitation." for a few moments, Chorong studied Bomi's eyes before she looked away outside.
Bomi then started the engine and drove away. Not long enough, the younger girl started speaking.
"This is my favorite time of the year. Over the years, we're doing this. Sometimes, my parents would come along and we're doing this together. Those were the days." Bomi turned down the volume of the music before continuing. "This is the kind of annual activity I'm willing to do for the rest of my life."
Chorong glanced at her but the younger was too focused on the road.
"Hayoung already narrated what happened right?" Chorong almost choke when Bomi asked her that question directly. So she simply nodded.
"Her name is Lime. She was my bestfriend since high school... I guess it's not really about how long you knew someone afterall."
Chorong's heart was aching hearing the bitterness in Bomi's tone. Just a proof on how it affected the girl.
"Uhmm... Please tell me if I'm out of line but... Is she... Someone." Chorong swallowed nervously. "Special?"
"You mean a girlfriend?" coincidentally, they were on a stoplight. When Bomi looked at her, Chorong thought she had seen something in Bomi's eyes or it's just imagination? or it's just something she mere wish to see.
"I don't think I can handle it well if she was my girlfriend." Bomi shrugged before letting out a simple chuckle. "Hmm what about you, should I prepare for a catfight when I pretend as your girlfriend or something."
Chorong couldn't help but to laugh. "No one will initiate a catfight Bomi."
"Really?"
"I've never been inlove." Chorong shared. If it's TMI for their topic then she doesn't care anymore.
"Really? It's a surprise." this time Bomi's tone seemed like the girl doesn't believe her.
"Well, it's true." Chorong wondered why she had to reveal so much about herself to Bomi.
"You know what happened right? She ran away." Bomi stated sadly. "To be honest, I don't understand, why she had to do that. If she just told me the truth or even tell me that she needs money. We can talk about it in some way. And yet she chose to do that." Bomi's voice cracked and Chorong couldn't help but to avoid looking at the girl.
"I want to believe that she has a reason. I still want to hold into that. My friendship with her last for years and I am certain that it's genuine." Bomi noticed that Chorong was not responding so she checked if the girl is already sleeping.
She faked a cough to get her attention.
"I'm listening." Bomi noticed the fragility on Chorong's voice and she felt touched on how the girl is sympathizing to her.
"I have to close the restaurant because I had a lot of loans to continue it. And I failed to paid them. So no choice, I had to sell the property. It was my biggest heartbreak. We dreamed of having it together when we're in college but it seemed like she neglected everything when she ran away without a word." A surge of anger scraped its way through Bomi's throat. She swallowed it back down.
"But I still want to believe that she has a reason. Maybe she needed that money that bad."
"Enough to ruined herself? Her reputation? Your friendship? I don't think any amount of money is enough for that." Chorong snapped. She didn't mean to. She noticed how every word came out sarcastic to her own ears.
"I was numb when she ran away. Can't believe how a simple betrayal shattered me into pieces." Bomi chuckled bitterly. "I almost self destruct. She literally destroyed my hopes and dreams."
Chorong nodded in understanding. One of the worst thing in the world is betrayal, be it comes from a friend or a lover or even a family member. It will serve the same damage.
It would make your heart changed.
It would be afraid to trust anyone again.
Chorong now fully understand why Bomi turned into a person with reservation and fear.
Where a genuine kindness will be filled with suspicions.
Every person she meet, she'll search for a crack to prove that they are unworthy of her trust.
It's cruel. But that's how it works.
