The Only One

Pinky Promise

The Only One

Mina was left alone in the living room, awkwardly standing there. Chaeyoung told her to wait there and not go anywhere. She's been in this house for how many times already and it was becoming bittersweet. Everything reminded her of Chaeyoung. She doesn't know why she suddenly acted like that. Was she jealous? Of course not. Why would I?, Mina thought.

"Let's go." Chaeyoung's voice pulled Mina out of her thoughts. The shorter girl's soft hands clasped around her wrist and lead her somewhere. They went out the back gate of the house where a motorcycle was parked. Chaeyoung momentarily let go of Mina's hand so she could get on the motorcycle and get it started. The engine roared to life. She looked back at Mina and held out her hand. "Hop on." Mina took the girl's hand and slowly got on the vehicle. Chaeyoung gave her a helmet.

"Here, wear this."

Mina looked around. There was only one helmet. She wanted Chaeyoung to have it. "No, you wear it. I'll be fine."

"I don't want to take any chances of having someone I care about get hurt again." Something else was laced around Chaeyoung's voice. It wasn't just of concern. Mina tried her best but she couldn't tell what it was. She didn't say anything and just wore the helmet, which made the other girl smile, feeling satisfied.

Chaeyoung drove them somewhere. It wasn't anywhere familiar to Mina but she just kept quiet and enjoyed the ride. The cool breeze of the dusk air hit her hot skin. Her close proximity with Chaeyoung was unavoidable, considering that they were riding a motorcycle. She had no choice but to hold on to the other girl. She tried to just cling on to Chaeyoung's leather jacket but the speed made it almost impossible to do so. Chaeyoung even did the courtesy to guide Mina's hands where it was supposed to be: wrapped around Chaeyoung's small waist.

They stopped at a secluded area. Mina looked around. There were trees in every direction she looked at. If it were any person, she would've freaked out by now. But with Chaeyoung, she felt safe.

"Follow me."

They hiked for about two minutes until they reached an open area. Mina could see the orange tint of the sky as the sun slowly disappeared on the horizon. Chaeyoung sat down on the grass, never taking her eyes off the view of the city and the warm sky. Mina sat beside her, making sure to leave some space in between them. They sat in silence for a few minutes.

"Why were you acting weird earlier?" Chaeyoung asked. Mina diverted her attention from the view to the girl beside her. Chaeyoung looked at her with soft eyes. Honestly, she doesn't know. It was so sudden and she couldn't control herself.

"I don't know." Mina simply said with a sigh. "It was unlike me to react like that. I'm sorry."

"You don't have anything to be sorry for." Chaeyoung gave her a small smile. Mina couldn't help but reciprocate as well. Chaeyoung's smile was contagious in a good way. A cool breeze blew past them, which made Mina hug herself because of the sudden shift to a cooler temperature. Chaeyoung immediately took off her jacket and wrapped it delicately around Mina's shoulders.

"But you'll be cold." Mina argued. Chaeyoung simply shook her head and wrapped it a bit tighter around her. Mina felt her heart flutter and heat rose up from her stomach to her cheeks. "T-Thanks." Mina said with a stutter on her voice. It made Chaeyoung giggled, which only made her heart beat even faster.

"This was our favorite spot." Chaeyoung said out of the blue. Mina turned her body a bit to look at her better. "My mom, dad, and I always went here when we want to get out of the house and have family time. My dad loves camping so much while my mom hates the outdoors because there would always be bugs everywhere. This place was special for the two of them because it was where my dad proposed to my mom."

The smile on Chaeyoung's face was stinging Mina's heart. It was both happy, yet sad. Reminiscing her memories of her family has proven to be bittersweet for Chaeyoung. She wasn't ashamed to talk about her parents. They seemed to be wonderful people. Chaeyoung has grown up in a loving and protective family, but that was all taken from her in just a blink of an eye.

"My dad chased my mom for eight years. He didn't give up on her no matter how many times my mom turned him down." Chaeyoung laughed as she remembered her dad's stories. "Eventually, my mom gave up and dated my dad. And they fell in love."

Chaeyoung turned to her left to look Mina straight in the eyes. "My dad told me to fight for the person I love and to never stop pursuing them until they say yes. But I think I failed him."

"What do you mean?" Mina asked. Chaeyoung leaned closer towards her.

"I like someone, but I don't know if they like me back. I don't even know if they enjoy spending time with me or if she's just forced to do so."

Chaeyoung was slowly leaning in closer. Mina couldn't help but gulp. started to become dry and sweat began to form on her forehead.

"Who?" Mina managed to say with a weak voice.

"It's someone who's the exact opposite of me. She's confident, smart, beautiful, and respected by everyone. She's elegant but she's also the biggest goof you'll ever know. She never fails to make me smile with her jokes, no matter how lame they may be. She never fails to make me feel loved. She never forgets our promise to buy me a strawberry smoothie and walk me home every day. And she's the only person I allowed into my life." Chaeyoung said with so much emotion in her voice. "She's here, looking at me with those warm eyes and sweet smile."

Mina was feeling a lot. But unlike before, now she's sure of everything. Her lips touched the other girl's. Their lips were dancing to an unheard melody. Chaeyoung's hand held her nape and pushed their lips closer to each other. She indulged the sweet taste of strawberries and vanilla on Chaeyoung's lips. The kiss was delicate. As they pulled away from the kiss, Mina's doubts were pushed into oblivion. Her heart's question was answered and she was happy. They leaned their forehead against each other and both of them smiled, slightly out of breath.

"I like you Mina." Chaeyoung confessed. Mina couldn't help but smile at how nervous Chaeyoung was. She leaned forward and gave the girl another kiss.

"I like you too." Mina said with the brightest smile Chaeyoung has ever seen. The serious atmosphere then shifted.

"So you were acting weird earlier because you saw me flirting with that girl?" Chaeyoung questioned Mina with a hint of amusement on her voice. "Was The Myoui Mina jealous?"

Mina hit Chaeyoung on her left arm, which made the shorter girl whine and exaggerate being hurt. "Shut up! I didn't know you were such a flirt! If I knew, then I wouldn't have fallen for you."

Chaeyoung tackled Mina on the ground. Mina was lying on her back with Chaeyoung on top of her, the shorter girl's legs on either side of her body. Chaeyoung leaned down and peppered kisses on Mina's face which made the elegant girl giggle. Then lastly, Chaeyoung placed a sweet kiss on Mina's lips, to which Mina reciprocated wholeheartedly.

"You were the only one I was ever interested in."

"Good because you were the only one who made me feel this way." Mina grabbed the collar of Chaeyoung's shirt and pulled her down for a deeper, more passionate kiss.

The sun has already disappeared into the horizon and the stars were staring to light up the night sky as the city lights started to appear. There they were kissing blissfully under the night sky, happy and contented of the outcome of what seemed to be a bad day.

I guess the universe wanted them to be together.
