09. Heroine

From Heaven With Love

First of all, am so sorry for not updating last week *sighs* crying

My inspiration flew away and it didnt come back until sunday....

To pay you guys back, I am presenting you a lengthy chapter here!! ^^

Hope you'll enjoy it~

Kris’ Point of View.

09. Heroine

Tao lend me his car because he believed that my driving skill was fine. Truthfully, I learned nothing from his lesson. And all I did was nod my head and raise my eyebrows. Tao was so hyper—as usual—that I had to cover my ears every single time he curses, at anything that was cutting his spot. Yes, anything. Trust me, Friend, I know, cities’ traffics are the worst. But does he really need to honk at everything? Even cats and dogs? I’m starting to think that he wasn’t an angel in the first place. I mean, how come an angel has that kind of attitude? Impossible for me if I must say.

And so, he carried on with his ‘Ways to Drive Safely’ lecture. When the time came for me to drive, I inhaled as many air as possible. It's a common thing to get nervous, right? Well, angels get nervous too, you know. I put my hands on the steering wheel 'Remember what YiXing told you; you have the ability of manipulating things'. There must be some way to control this vehicle. All I need to do is concentrate! Ready or not, here goes nothing... I closed my eyes and felt Tao eyeing every single move I made. And I did as what my instinct told me to do. Magically, the car started moving like how I imagined it would be! Yeah! It moves! Even with me effortlessly sitting on the seat, without touching anything. True that, mind power is awesome. Oh well, I still had to put my hands on the steering wheel though, so that Tao would believe me and he won't think that I have some kind of superpower. This doesn't count as lying, right? Heheh, this should be fun...

Just a matter of time, my day with Tao is over and I rushed to Ha Neul's school with his car. Wait... Ripe the green bananas! I'm twenty minutes late! The girl is totally going to kill me when I arrive. Quick, gather your courage, Kris!

I walked out from the car without locking the door. Finding her is the number one priority, and next, I will have to think of a way to cool her down, or I might be dead in the next ten minute. Weird thing is, she was nowhere to be found... Where is she?

My eyes roamed through the school's parking lot. No sign of Kim Ha Neul. Then I ran inside the school. It turned out that the schoolyard was empty. Perhaps all the students already went home. Oh, I'm so dead, even when I already am... Please don't kill me after this, Ha Neul. I know you hated waiting, but this time please forgive me—

“You're not free to go, yet.”

I turned around.

Wait, what was that? Sounds like someone is in a big trouble.

“Let me go!” No way! That's Ha Neul's voice. I better check it out, she sounded like she was out of breath.

"Ha Neul?” I followed the voices in perplexity. And eventually found the source. It was in front of the door to the school's gymnasium. I found seven girls forming into a circle, humming like crazy birds after their prey. And in the middle of them, I saw a tall girl, holding this small and skinny girl on her tummy before slamming the small girl down onto the ground.

I felt my heart broke when I caught a glimpse of the familiar pale and expressionless face. Thank God I found you.

“Ha Neul-ah! Are you okay?” I pushed the girls aside and forced myself inside the commotion. What is this? Bullying? Oh! For goat's sake! “What did you do to her?!” I clenched my fist and eyed the girls with a disgusted look. Teaming up against a weak girl is unforgivable. Intolerable if they were men. Someday, Karma shall finish them.

***

Can't believe what I just saw yesterday. Ha Neul is in need of a great protector. Now that her guardian angel has gone, I am the number one candidate of being this girl's guardian. Even if I look like I wouldn't hurt a fly, trust me, you have no idea of what I'm capable of doing when I'm angry. Plus the intimidating look on my face that shows out every time I come across an odd stranger. That's one advantage I can use to keep her off from danger. I am extremely tall and I can beat someone really hard too. On top of that, Tao is good at martial arts. Well, the haven would I care where he learned that! What I'm trying to say is that he could train me. Then I will become strong and knowledgeable. No one will ever beat me. I will protect Ha Neul until the last drop of my blood. Yes, I am a one genius handsome guy. Call me Professor Kris.

“Earth to Kris ajeossi!”

“What the elf is 'ajeossi', Tao?” I raised my eyebrows and shot a death glare to the boy across the room.

“Nothing.” Hmm, this is suspicious... “We should start looking for jobs, you know. You've been spending your time in my apartment, trolling around. Here and there. Listen... My Friend, earning money is not as easy as wrecking someone's place. Go and get yourself a job!” He took a sit on the couch across me.

First of all, Tao works in a nightclub as a bartender. The kind of connections he has to help me on getting a new job is... Bad.

“Tsk. It's not my fault that the job you offered me was to be a stripper—or what you called it 'Pole-dancer'. How in the world would I accept that?!”

“I was just playing with you, dude. Chill out...” He beamed and walked closer to me. He sat on the floor in front of me; I was sitting on an armed couch with my hands on the back of my head. Tao grabbed my knees with both his hands and hugged them tightly. What is this? He rested his head on my lap.... I could feel his heartbeat. Gross, I felt... filthy...

“Hmm... Kris-ah.” Holy bananas... was he trying to seduce me? “Get off! You dirty little—”

All of a sudden, there was a loud impatient knock on the door. Before I could finish my sentence, Tao was already skipping happily towards the door of his apartment. That guy is insane.

“Oh! There you are!” I heard Tao giggling and soon followed by an irritated groan from someone. “Isn't there a better greeting for your old friend who had traveled for hours just to reach this mother freaking place?”

I tip-toed to the walls behind them and peeked through the fish tank not far from the door. There was a man, dressed in a black v-neck tee and grey denim pants. I couldn't see his hair because he was wearing a grey bowler hat. His right hand was carrying three suitcases, and his left hand was holding something colorful. I looked closer and realized he was holding a lollipop! Another weird friend of the weird Tao.

He looked closer to me the fish tank. “Who's that?”

His eyes met mine and I let out an awkward cough. Being caught that you were staring is embarrassing... “Him?” Tao turned around and I gave him an awkward gaze.

“Oh, he's the fallen angel I told you about. Isn't he pretty?” The man dropped his suitcases in front of Tao and walked on my direction.

I offered my hand and asked, “Hello, I am Kris. May I know your name?” The man didn't answer me. He just gave me this judging look with his skeptical face. Do I look intimidating to him?

He turned his head back to look at Tao who was already carrying his luggage to Tao's room. He peeked at me from the corner of his eyes and shouted, “Tao!! Don't tell me you've been hitting on this innocent boy!”

My jaw dropped, almost on the floor... What was that about?!

I heard Tao laughing childishly in his room, “You don't know how much that eyes and lips could temp you, Su Ho!” I gulped in surprise. So, all this time, I've been hiding inside the shark's territory? Oh holy potato-lye...

“Ugh, that ugly stone-head. He just never changed.” The man looked at me with his eyes sharpened. He sighed before shaking his hand with mine, “The name is Joon-Myun, but they call me Su Ho. And Kris... Don't worry, Tao needs some love. That's why he's been acting like this to you. He needs to get la— I mean, he needs to get a lady. Yes, a lady to love him. Please bear with his behavior. Okay?” I lowered my head and nodded.

This doesn't seem to be that serious, but I still have to be careful. Who knows what might happen if I let myself off guard and then he starts attacking me... From above... From behind... From under... And side to side. Oh God, this is nightmare.

“You look scared.” Su Ho patted my back as he his lollipop carelessly. How am I supposed to trust these child-like guys? “No. I'm okay.” I shrugged and went back to the living room. How did I get myself into this kind of situation? Maybe I've done something wrong in my past... Something that was really sinful. Who knows?

“You know, I do think you look pretty.” I looked beside me and found Su Ho sitting on the couch with his legs crossed. Now that he had taken off his hat, I could see he has a black hair with a shade of soft brown color. But, again, he was looking at me with a judging look. Hey, this man's eyes are somewhat weird... They're like black holes. Endless, dark, and empty. You can easily see through his soul, but his looks are a little bit deceiving. A mix of innocence, curiosity, and maturity. I have a feeling that Su Ho is someone who will chase you wherever you go if he wants something from you.

“Pretty? I get that a lot.” I said with a cold tone. Although his face was somehow addicting to examine, I have to avoid making any eye contact with him. If he's a friend of Tao, he could also be a ert like him, right? Watch your back, Kris. Don't let these aliens turn you into one of them.

“I see you two are getting along just fine.” Tao walked inside the room with a big smileon his face.“Two suitcases of clothes. And one suitcase of candies. Still the same Kim Joon-Myun I know.” He then lay down on the floor, with Su Ho's foot under his head.

“And still the same sour-scented toes... How much I missed you, Su Ho.” I held my laughter while Su Ho threw his lollipop onto Tao's face. Tao seemed to be already expecting the reaction, he skillfully got up and sat next to me. This brings us to a dangerous situation; where I am trapped between two brainless men.

“I’m not going to be easy on you this time, Tao.” Wow, the cold stare he gave Tao was something that deserves an applaud. I turned my head to Tao, he looked like he’s been enjoying mocking Su Ho around, “Oh no. I am not going to be easy on you either, Kitty.”

“What did you say? I am not a kitten, you martial art moron.” Su Ho bent down and picked up his lollipop, swinging it back and forth, aiming Tao right on his fox-like eyes.

“Once a kitty, always a kitty.” Tao crossed his arms boastfully. Prepare yourself conrads, world war three is about to start, in three, two, one.

“Yah! You!” Su Ho threw his lollipop for the second time, but this time it hit Tao on his forehead, leaving a round faint red mark behind. I should take a picture of him later...

“Tsk, you’re going to regret this later, Kitty.” I chuckled upon hearing Tao’s signature grumbles. “Do you guys always do this when you’re hanging out?” I asked.

“Yes. All the time.” They answered in unison, but didn’t bother to look at me. It was like I wasn’t in the room. I suspected that their bodies are currently posessed by children’s spirits. And so, they continued on arguing. Curse this, I had to stop them before it gets too serious. “I need to look for a job. Now, will you help me already?”

Tao shifted his gaze to me and smiled, “Ah, of course. Su Ho here can help you with that. I told him that you’re looking for a job vacancy. He has great connections with people all over South Korea, yeah, since he’s a famous actor.”

“Actor? For real?” I turned around and observed the grinning man beside me. He does look charming, but TV does a great lie for him. Off-screen, he’s a true lively alien.

“So... Kris, let’s start with your talent. What are you good at?” He took a piece of paper and a pen from the tea table.

I scratched my eyebrows, “None.” Su Ho lifted his head and gave me an ‘are-you-kidding-me?’ look, “None? Seriously?” I gave him a reassuring nod.

“Now, that’s a problem.” Su Ho bit the pen in his hand and gave me a judging look, again. “But you have such a beautiful face. It will be such a waste if we don’t use it...” He played with his own lips before glancing at Tao. “Hey... Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

I looked around to both of them confusedly. What? Is this going to be something bad? Oh peach.

“My mind is processing very slowly now... Kitty, just tell me already.” Tao walked behind me and leaned closer to Su Ho. “Aish, I said stop calling me ‘Kitty’!” Su Ho pulled Tao’s neck and whispered on the other’s ear. All I could hear was the sound of their breaths, running fast between some mumbles that didn’t really make sense.

“What are you guys talking about?” I tapped Su Ho’s shoulder to gain his attention. He raised his hand; telling me to wait. I peeked behind his shoulders to find Tao’s shocked face. His eyes were opened widely, so did his mouth. I can tell by his expressions that what Su Ho told him was something bad. My nature told me to run away as fast as I could, but the curiosity beat it. I waited for them to finish.

“That’s not a bad idea.” Tao pulled out from Su Ho’s grip and he looked at me with a worried look, “He will do well, I think.”

“Not to mention her interest in pretty faces,” Su Ho muttered with his head down, he was writing something on the paper. “Now we’ll just have to bring him to her.” What? Who is her?

“Are you sure?” Tao walked to the corner of the room, slumping down the floor with his back rested on the wall. He hesitated a bit before looking up at me with a sad look. What is happening, here? “After all, I’ve been dying to see her again, Tao. I know you miss her too. Am I right?” I felt Tao starting to loosen up his tension. Su Ho continued, “And I am a hundred percent sure she can help Kris.”

“Maybe you’re right.” Tao got up and dragged me to his bedroom, “Suit yourself, we’ll have a job interview in an hour.”

***

And that’s exactly how I got here. “Psst, are you nervous?” Su Ho nudged my elbow. Yes, I am, I’m extremely nervous, Kitty. “A little.” I tapped my foot impatiently on the wooden floor. The receptionist said that the office manager dash photographer, will come back to the building at four. It was a quarter past four and she’s not here yet. I wonder how she looks like. Tao said he will just wait in the cafe across the building, Su Ho whispered something about Tao not wanting to see her. But oh I couldn’t care less! My brain was already overloaded with possibilities of how I might end up with this career. Modeling career. See? It sounds even sillier when a former-angel says it. Tsk, but this is way better than being a ‘pole-dancer’. Don’t you agree, apples?

I looked to the left, where there was a basket of fruits. The apples looked like they were nodding their stems. I guess that’s a ‘yes’ for me. You just need to show her your charms, Kris, no pressure.

“What are you looking at?” Su Ho gave me another  judging look. “Nothing.” I straightly went back on staring at the white modern-designed desk in front of us. We’ve been waiting here for ages, where is that woman?

“Hmm... Su Ho. This woman you and Tao have been talking about... How does she look like?” I peeked to the door of the office and quickly turned again to Su Ho. He had this weird knowing grin on his face, “You’ll see.”

I’m a man with endless patience so I guess it’s nothing hard. But still, I had this unfamiliar excitement to finally have a look of her. They said she is a close friend. Does that mean she’s also a weird person? Who knows?

“I’m sorry it took you so long,” A gentle voice crept inside the silent room, followed by a sound of door being closed slowly. A pair of heeled-shoes cliqued to the front of the desk, and a woman’s figure stood in front of me with grace. My vision got blurry with sparkles of light. Mother beavers, she’s a goddess. Yes, I repeat, a goddess.

“Raina!” Su Ho jumped off from his seat and hugged the woman tightly. “Su Ho! It’s been a long time since the last time I saw you off-screen...” The woman’s hair fell down on Su Ho’s shoulder, it was dark mild brown, long and shiny. I could smell the perfume from her body. Sweet, and addictive. “So what brings you here?” She pulled out from the hug and took a sit on her chair. Su Ho sat down as well and explained to her about me. I didn’t pay much attention to the conversation. Instead, I examined her facial features in awe. Trying to find the best of words to describe her looks, but nothing seemed to fit perfectly. I rubbed my chin and she chuckled after looking at my expression. Wait, that was wrong. She might think of me as a ert! Sweet yellow corn... “Ehh, ehh? Pardon me?”

“Kris, she asked you about your height! Does she really need to repeat it a hundred times for you to understand?” Su Ho hit my head playfully before cracking up in laughter with the woman goddess in front of us. I swallowed my saliva and looked at her smiling face, ooh she’s prettier when she smiles, “My aplogy. I am a hundred and eighty-seven centimeters tall.” I gave her a friendly smile and she wrote something down on her book. “Ah, I see. What a tall body you have there, Kris.” She smiled at me, “A common thing for angels, huh?”

How did she know that? I exchanged glances with Su Ho. Is she a psychic?

Su Ho heaved, “She’s a close friend of Tao. She knows everything from his past, the same goes with me.” I nodded my head and bit my lower lip, “What’s your name again, madam?” The woman closed her book and winked at me, “It’s Raina. Raina Oh. A foreign name, because I am from California.” Sweet, she’s a crossbreed, that explains her beauty. “Ah, I see...”

Raina got up from her seat and offered her hand, “I will gladly accept you in my modeling agency, Kris.” I got up as well and shook her hand, felt so gentle and soft. She took something out from her handbag which looked like a camera. “We will take care of the papers later, now I will just have to take some shots of your face from different angles to fill in your portfolio. This is cruciate in a modeling career, if you’re portfolio is bad, the chance of you in getting booked by the companies will decrease. You have to look your best now. Here, follow me.”

I pulled Su Ho’s sleeve, asking him to accompany me. Being nervous is uncomfortable, I just need someone to be there and look after me. “Aha... You’re cute.” Su Ho grinned and followed me inside a room with many lamps. From tiny to huge. Everything there, was white. What’s this? A photoshoot room?

“Kris, stand right there on the white covering, won’t you?” Raina asked me while pointing at the  big white screen on the walls. I walked over there and Su Ho gave me a supportive smile.

My hearbeat pumped ten times faster. This is the first photoshoot ever. I have to be charming and handsome. I will put a spell on those who saw my photos. Until they will forget the beauty of any other men in this world. Yes, I am sure I can do that. My narcissism said so.

“Ready?” I looked to the front and Raina was already standing with a camera on her hands. She took a remote control from the floor and the next moment the lights were dimmed. I braced myself and took a deep breath. I’m ready.

***

The day went very well and Tao asked me about Raina. I still can’t understand why Tao did not want to meet that godess. I mean, I met her once and now I want to meet her again! But it’s night now, and I’m already at Ha Neul’s. So... Maybe next day?

Oh yeah! I have to tell Ha Neul about the job. “Excuse me, have you seen Miss Ha Neul?” I asked one of the maids who was passing by the dinning room. “Eh... I saw her with Akira in the garden earlier, sir.” I nodded and thanked her, she went back on her work and I made my way to the back door. Slowly sliding the door aside, revealing a white patio with dozens of torches. I walked ahead, reaching the open green field, surrounded by pine trees and white roses.

My eyes caught a silhouette of a girl, sitting on the grass with her head lifted. “Ha Neul? Is that you?” The girl turned her head back, looking at me with her big round eyes. ‘Yes, that’s her’. I smiled and quickly took a sit next to her. She was stargazing, as usual. Akira was sitting on her lap, sleeping peacefully.

“Why do you like stars that much?” I laid down on my back and stared deep at the dark sky. “I don’t know. Maybe because they never run out of lights.”

Silly girl, of course they will never. “And how does that even attract you?” She turned her head to me, “Stop asking questions, Oppa. You’re ruining the moment.” She went back on her precious stars and mumbled something about a date with someone. Ugh, wait. A date?

“A date?!” I sat up and stared at her blankly. She sighed and her eyebrows furrowed, “I’m not sure... The girls told me to stay away from him... But he’s like a magnet for me.”

“Whom? The girls? What are you talking about, Ha Neul-ah?” I ran my fingers through my hair. Sometimes the smallest news is the most important one!

“Se Hun.” Him again. Why does everything has to do with him? Why, God, why?

“’The girls’... Does that refers to those who harassed you in school the other day?” I have my temper, but she doesn’t seem to care that much. Maybe she’s used to be bullied, but this has to stop. And furthermore, those girls were beating her because of Se Hun? Has the world gone mad?

“Yes, them. But Se Hun asked me to go on a date tomorrow. And I said yes. He was being nice to me... A-and...” I looked at her and her cheeks reddened. Her heart flutters because of Se Hun, Oh! How great!

“The girls told you to stay away from him. Why?” I asked her bluntly.

She needs some help with her feelings. This can’t go on like this, not with oafs pestering her to do what they want.“They said I’m stealing their Se Hun away. But they have no rights to do so. Next week, I will tell them to go get their own lives, Oppa. Trust me.” She flashed me a determined smile.

“Still... You shouldn’t come to that date with Se Hun,” the words slipped out from my mouth unintentionally. But I had to say so, that idea of the two of them dating is too dangerous. And I wouldn’t like it either way.

“Why?” She grunted. Oh, do I have to say this? Are you stupid? You will get hurt by the girls in your school!

“Just do as I say,” I ordered her and tilted my head up to the sky. Maybe I sounded like a father, but in this situation, I have to act like one. I will be her guardian when she needs me.

“No. I will still come no matter what you say. This is my chance—“

“Don’t come.”

“I will come.”

“Don’t.”

“What if I will?”

You asked for this, Ha Neul. “Then I will come with you.”

“No way! That would be ridiculous!” She jolted in surprise and Akira woke up. I sushed the puppy back to sleep and whispered, “Do as I say, or I will come with you.”

“That’s not fair... If you ruin my date, then I will never ever forgive you.” She exclaimed, emphasizing the word ‘never’.

“Try me.” I took out my phone and quickly texted Tao. ‘If you’re free tomorrow, I need your help.’

“You’re so annoying...” She laid down on the grass and I did as well. Let’s see what happens to her and Se Hun tomorrow. Heheh, game on, flirty boy.
