The majestic Ice Kingdom, was one of the four cardinal empires ruling the tiny blue orb, the Earth, we humans call our home

 

The kingdoms were always on edge with each other always engaging in petty battles every now and then......... An unexplained animosity that ran deep through the veins of the royals of each Kingdom, a broken destiny that kept repeating throughout the ages 

 

The people of the lands wished for peace...... Praying daily to the creator to end this eternal war of greed and power.... But little did they know that it was the sins of their dark pasts that haunt them to this very day...... Punishing them for the cruelties they had bestowed upon an innocent soul........ 

 

So hence their prayers had remained unfulfilled.......... Until finally God decided it was time to give the world a second chance...... It was finally time for his favorite child to have his happy ending

 

This is the story of a young boy called Sunggyu...... and this story begins in the land of eternal ice where an unrequited love finally comes to an end...... 

 

Prince Sunggyu was the eldest son of the ruler of the Ice Kingdom..... not that it mattered much to the young 9 year old Sunggyu 

 

“Sunggyu-ah!! ” Dongwoo yelled frustratingly trying to chase after the young runaway prince holding his long robes in one hand and a bowl in the other as he unsuccessfully kept trying to feed the stubborn child 

 

Dongwoo could only sigh as his young son evaded his grasp easily sprinting across the large heaps of snow in the courtyard without stumbling and falling

 

“ Sunggyu-ah makes it look so effortless.... It’s almost as if the young prince is dancing a beautiful ballad with the white pristine snow ” Dongwoo thought, fondly gazing at his son who was gracefully gliding in circles around him as he himself barely managed to stand upright in the knee deep snow

 

“No No Nooo.....I don’t want porridge! I want cake! Strawberry cake!! ” Sunggyu sang while playfully dodging his mother’s embrace once again laughing gleefully 

 

“Waaahh I never knew my son was such a  naughty disobedient prince !” Dongwoo  gasped in mock surprise placing his hand over his heart, mouth and eyes wide open in a comical manner

 

“Waahhh Dino mommy looks so funny” Sunggyu spluttered in laughter plopping down on the snow and rolling around childishly 

 

“Don’t let daddy see you like that he’ll scold you again for not behaving 'Quin-ish' like”

 

“Its Queen,  Prince Sunggyu..... not 'Quin-ish” Dongwoo corrected his son for the hundredth time sighing 

“This naughty boy, always has to be so stubborn for no reason”

 

“and you’re forgetting something prince Sunggyu, I’m not the Queen... ”Dongwoo continued gently sitting next to his son and extending a spoon full of porridge towards the prince hopefully

 

Sunggyu falling for his mother’s puppy eyes obediently opened his mouth much to the delight of his mother 

 

“But Hyorin mammy is a quin-“ upon the glare of his mother Sunggyu immediately corrected himself 

“ I mean a queen! If Hyorin mammy is called a queen why doesn’t anyone call, Dino mammy queen? Sunggyu questioned innocently

 

Dongwoo looked slightly uncomfortable at the questions his son was posing, it wasn’t the first time Sunggyu had asked them but as the young prince had started getting older Dongwoo’s cryptic answers didn’t satisfy him anymore making Sunggyu whine and sulk the whole day wanting the real ‘answer’ since he wasn’t a kid anymore

 

 “It’s going to be one of those days isn’t it” Dongwoo sighed internally......aware of the young prince’s small eye’s eyeing him curiously and eagerly...... Dongwoo nonetheless tried to answer them with a small forced smile on his face

 

“That’s because there can be only one Queen Prince Sunggyu....... and that Queen is Hyorin....... not me”

 

“ Waeeee?! What kind of reason is that?” Sunggyu frowned confused, sitting up “It’s not fair ! Why can’t both of you be Queens ? If only one of you can be Queen..... then it should be Dino mammy since daddy likes mammy more than-“

 

A loud slap resonated in the courtyard cutting off whatever Sunggyu was about to say the young prince held his reddened cheeks as he turned his head back looking into his mother with teary hurt eyes 

 

Dongwoo’s chest heaved heavily, trembling hand still raised high in the air while trying to control his emotions 

 

A flicker of remorse passed through his orbs but he quickly shook it away because what he had done was for his son’s benefit to protect him from the unfair hierarchy he was born into 

 

“Prince Sunggyu you will never repeat whatever you told me to any living soul again for as long as you live understand ?!”

Sunggyu just nodded his head without question, bowing his head down low teeth biting harshly into his lower lip to prevent himself from crying as he held his bruised cheek

 

Dongwoo placed the bowl away and knelt down beside him a gentle hand on his head as he continued speaking in a more soothing tone compared to earlier

 

“I’m sorry...... Sunggyu my dear, my intention was never to hurt you .You know I love you very very much......... Much more than my own life right ?” Sunggyu nodded slowly

 

“You are my precious son my most valuable precious gift...... from our creator.... If... If anything were to happen to you” Dongwoo chocked” Just because of your careless words I would never be able to forgive myself..... so please for mummy’s sake never ever repeat this to no one again..... Promise me” Dongwoo whispered tears slowly dripping from the corners of his eyes

 

 

Sunggyu’s tiny hands immediately shot up hurriedly wiping his mother’s tears away

“I won’t!” Sunggyu almost screamed” I won’t disappoint mammy again!”

 

“I don’t know what great deed I did in my previous life to get such a perfect son as you in this life of mine....... I’m trully grateful ”Dongwoo said softly, placing an affectionate kiss atop the Princes fluffy hair

 

“You won’t understand till your a bit older Sunggyu-ah but I want you to understand that though you are the eldest prince of the Ice Kingdom..... I am neither a queen or part of the royal family”

 

“but that doesn’t make sense mammy....... “ Sunggyu argued quietly “ How can I be a prince if your not a Queen? Your married to daddy..... The king.... so how are you not part of the royal family” Sunggyu pouted scrunching his nose in confusion 

 

“Like I said you won’t understand now ”Dongwoo sighed “I’m not a queen Sunggyu and my relationship with your father is.....complicated”

 

“What’s complicated about the relationship between my parents? “ Sunggyu frowned probbing

 

“The fact that we may be your parents but we’re not wedded ” Dongwoo answered unwittingly cursing himself in the head for the slip of his tongue when he saw his Sons face fall

 

“Whaa-t?” Sunggyu sputtered “How is that possible....yo-urr my parents..... you have to be married! That’s what all the fairytale’s say,  the king and queen lived happily ever after !”

 

“Sunggyu-ah listen to me love.... “ Dongwoo cooed trying to placate his son knowing how emotional sunggyu was if Dongwoo didn’t do something now The young prince would probably do something dangerous and stupid to his well being 

 

“WHY?!!!?” Sunggyu screamed hysterically pushing his mother’s hands away

 

“Sunggyu-ah?” Dongwoo questioned cautiously trying to hold his son

 

“Nooo No Noo you never tell me anything ! Every time I ask you anything about you or father you always change the topic “ Sunggyu growled backing away from his mother like a hurt cub

 

“Sunggyu that’s not true “ Dongwoo spoke softly

 

“It isn’t ? Well....well then tell me... Why doesn’t father ever play with me or visit our quarters?”

 

“Sunggyu your father is a very busy man.... he is the king after all sweety”

 

“Is he so busy that he can’t even visit us once a month mother ?!!” Sunggyu erupted angrily

 

“SUNGGYU!” Dongwoo scolded his son for raising his voice

 

“Is he so busy that he can’t  even visit you mother? The person who yearns for his presence the most ?” Sunggyu continued ignoring his mother

 

“Did I do something wrong..... did I anger him ? Is that why he’s punishing you mother..... by not calling you the Queen? Is it my fault..... I’m sorry mother if it is......... what should I do to make it better? “ Sunggyu sobbed brokenly

 

Dongwoo’s eyes filled with tears again....the reason why his son kept asking him those questions apparent now...... His son was only worried about him because he failed to be a good mother and hide his sorrow from his loving son

 

Sunggyu didn’t deserve to be his son he should have been born of the Queen not a worthless person like him

 

A sudden loud blowhorn resonated through the kingdom..... the icicles along the castle walls resonating loudly as an announcer yelled

“The king has returned !!” 

 

Sunggyu’s ears peaked up at the announcement as he stared off deep in thought at the main castle...... out of the periphery of his eye he saw his mother heave a sigh of relief, quietly sending a small prayer to the heavens 

 

Sunggyu felt angry his mother wanted to see his father no doubt but as per usual he never wound never venture out of their section of the palace..... 

and had made Sunggyu promise the same many times as well..... but enough... Today he would disobey his mother..... today Sunggyu would get the answers he wanted so badly

And he would get them even if it meant defying his precious mother 

 

Sunggyu sent his mother an apologetic look, turning away just as Dongwoo’s eyes widened in realisation at what his son was about to do 

“Sunggyu Don’t!! ” but alas his pleas fell on deaf ears as the crown prince raced his way through the snow towards the castle gate........ Towards his father...... The king
