Donghae had been in love with English ever since he first heard Michael Jackson’s music at about 10 years old. Needless to say he learned all his discography, lyrics, and every exact dance move, becoming an excellent dancer in the process. Little by little, he started discovering numerous foreign singers with amazing music, and little by little, he started learning English without even noticing. He even started loving English classes at school even though most of his teachers and he managed to understand despite their accents. He was very proud of his pronunciation, though not very much of his grammar.

As he progressed through elementary and high school, Donghae gradually realized that he loved learning new languages. It was easy for him to pick up little phrases in different languages and once he immersed himself into one of them, it was never long before he could easily make conversation with a native person. In high school, he met a lot of foreign students from the exchange program and could soon speak Japanese fluently. He found Chinese a bit harder (although he could keep up with a conversation), and English was his favorite. When he finished high school, he was 17 years old and he already knew what he wanted to study at university.
