Third Time's The Charm
Love Through The DimensionsThe sound of something boiling resonated in the small semi-basement room. If you thought it was water boiling over in a kettle or ramen cooking up in a pot? Think again. In the middle of the room sat a large cauldron with bubbling blue contents. The room was filled with smoke as a result of Hyun Mi forgetting to open the window, but it was too late for that as she threw one last ingredient into the mix and started reciting the spell from her ancient Summoner’s Spell Book.
“Mama obata,” as soon as she started the incantation, the smoke got to her and she choked on the thick air coughing slightly as she jumbled up the following words in the spell, “prod- pradhan- na kaendavimata!”
She squeezed her eyes shut at the sudden flash of bright light that exploded in the tiny space. The girl never remembered this being part of summoning a portal. She knew something went wrong when she heard a voice in her spell room.
“Ugh, what is this rundown shack? Totally needs some work,” Hyun Mi scoffed in disbelief as she looked at the elf that stood in front of her, harshly judging the ‘rundown shack’ that was her spell room.
The elf turned to her with a grimace and exaggeratedly shivered before pointing at her face, “Euh, that needs some work too.”
“Excuse me!?” Hyun Mi’s annoyance grew to a point that she couldn’t stand there and take his insults.
The male nonchalantly plopped on the huge chair in the corner of the space and continued looking around before finally starting a conversation with Hyun Mi herself.
“So why would one elf summon another? CAGE is not a dating agency.”
“Just so you know, I didn’t summon you and I’m not an elf,” Hyun Mi retorted, “Who are you and what are you doing here?”
“I’m Kim Ki Bum, an elf from the Gardenia dimension and you did summon me here,” the taller answered as he looked her up and down with an expression of confusion, “But you’re not an elf? You’re shorter than some of our people.”
Hyun Mi groaned as her fuse shortened when he insulted her height. She grabbed fistfuls of hair in frustration messing it up in the process.
“Woah, now you look like a troll. Is that what you are?”
If it were an Anime, the girl would have face planted in that moment out of pure exasperation. With anger boiling in her small figure, she looked at the words written in her book.
Mama obata prodhanno kaendavimata.
Flipping through the pages, she searched through the thick spell book to see what she had done wrong. Looking under the ‘E’ section she finally found the elf summoning spell.
Mama obata pradhanna kaendavimata.
Her eyes narrowed at the similar words, the corner of her lip twitching in annoyance. Why did spells have to be so similar? If only she hadn’t choked on the smoke - or if she’d at least choked to death - she wouldn’t have to be stuck with this obnoxious elf.
“You can go back to wherever you came from,” Hyun Mi said with a sour expression taking over her usual features, “I don’t need an elf companion.”
She watched how Ki Bum hummed in thought, “No.”
His answer left her dumbfounded. He didn’t like her spell room or her face for goodness sake, so why didn’t he want to leave?
“If you’re wondering why, it’s because the Companion Agency of Gardenia Enterprise, or CAGE as they’d like to call themselves, pays us a weekly allowance when we’re assigned to be someone’s companion,” Ki Bum said looking at his nails, admiring how freshly done they were.
Hyun Mi squinted again in thought. He looked like he didn’t want to be anyone’s companion anyway. Was the allowance really worth it?
“The allowance is worth it,” the elf said as if reading her thoughts, “I spent all my money on my full day spa treatment and splurging on clothes in the Dimension of Alfea. Those fairies really know their fashion.”
Hyun Mi thought it out for a moment before getting an idea, “I’ll just go to CAGE and decline the companionship then.”
Ki Bum doubled over, his sudden hysteria of high pitched laughter shocking her - the sound and the randomness. Had he lost his mind or was she dealing with a lunatic that entire 10 minutes?
“Miss Troll, don’t you know that to get to the dimension of Gardenia from this one, you’d have to travel through all 10 of the other dimensions?”
Right. Gardenia, being the home of Elves, Dwarves and Gnomes, had to take super high safety precautions to prevent attacks on their dimension. Thus - similar to earth - they had an ‘immigration’ to pass, but the only problem was the insane journey. The path to Gardenia was a one way street and you’d have to pass through every dimension and come out clean. Meaning, you shouldn’t have gotten any demerits on your trip there. There was no shortcut unless you were a resident.
She sighed in defeat, coming to terms with the fact that she was gonna be stuck with the elf on her trip. Her plan was to navigate through the dimensions on her own and learn about the mythical visitors of earth that your everyday human thought were just myth or folklore.
That’s right, all the mythical creatures were real. From mermaids to dragons, they all existed and humans may have seen them. They were just visiting from other dimensions and only a handful of humans had knowledge of this. Hyun Mi, being the descendant of Keepers, naturally knew of it too. Keepers were the ones who had the ability to cast spells, summon creatures, open portals and travel freely through the dimensions.
But well, her plans were officially down the drain as she had an unexpected guest. Begrudgingly, she accepted her fate, “My name is Hyun Mi. I’m a human and this is the Universe Dimension. I was trying to summon a portal, not an elf.”
Ki Bum just nodded with an expression saying he didn’t care for the most part. He waved her off as a sign for her to proceed with whatever she had to do while he moved to the stained mirror in the other corner of the room and checked his appearance, fluffing his blonde hair that was perfectly styled.
Hyun Mi’s features twitched once more as she opened the window of her room. She decided to ignore his presence and return to her actual objective of opening a portal. She gathered another batch of spell ingredients and put them in the cauldron one at a time.
“Mama obata prodxieno kaendavimata,” she read the chant from her book as she stirred the bubbling mixture. She could have sworn feeling like the stupidest person in the dimension that very moment. She had literally looked up the spell she was supposed to recite moments ago, but she had just said the wrong once again.
Another blinding light burst in the room with a sprinkling sound of magic as pixie dust began falling over her. Her embarrassment only grew when she heard Ki Bum snort in the corner.
Pixie Summoning Spell
Mama obata prodxieno kaendavimata.
Soft squeaks reached their ears which turned both their heads to look at the bunch of pixies Hyun Mi had accidentally summoned. Four tiny figures with distinct colors - purple, blue, pink and yellow - darted around the small space seeming rather excited.
Ki Bum’s face contorted as he caught one of the pixies that were flying past by the wings, examining the yellow glow that protruded from the tiny being. She squeaked louder in pain from his grip on her wings. He immediately regretted his decision as the remaining three attacked him.
Pixies weren’t to be judged by their size as the potency of their spell power was out of this world and they could fight when the situation called for it. They cast a bunch of spells on Ki Bum, freezing his fingers, then burning them lightly so he would let go of the yellow pixie in his hold.
Ki Bum howled in pain and jumped back, knocking down a few ornaments from the vanity. He cowered behind his arms to block their attacks as they mercilessly continued, hitting him on the head and arms, “Not the face! Not the hair! Stay away!”
“STOP!” Hyun Mi finally yelled, fuming. The pixies froze in place, staring at the human. Ki Bum heaved a sigh of relief and put his arms down, thinking it was over. But the purple pixie shot a puff of dust in the direction of his face.
“I saw that,” the human girl narrowed her eyes at the mythical creature, causing the little one to put up her hands as if surrendering.
Ki Bum stood up straight, dusting himself off as he scowled. He turned around to look in the mirror once again to see his face covered in pixie ink. He whined trying to rub the ink off to no avail. It wouldn’t even smudge. He cried as he looked at how it circled his eyes and the tip of his nose making him look like a panda.
The pixies giggled at his pitiful reaction and Hyun Mi couldn’t help but laugh at his misfortune too. Maybe summoning the pixies wasn’t a bad thing afterall. She held out her hands as a sign for them to come to her.
All four of them looked at each other for a moment and then flew to sit on her hands, two in each palm. She couldn’t help but smile at the four little faces that stared up at her and they didn’t hesitate to smile back.
“So what are your names?” Hyun Mi asked, hoping she’d be able to get more than indefinable squeaks.
The yellow and purple pixies shot up instantly, but the yellow one sat back down to allow the purple to go first. Perhaps there was some kind of seniority. As the little one squeaked, a bubble of sparkling pixie dust grew and rose up in front of Hyun Mi before popping, the sparkles falling as the sound of speech flowed in the room.
“I’m Maerin, pixie of music!”
Hyun Mi was in awe. She had heard about pixies and seen them in pictures but never had she known of their abilities. She watched as the pink fairy popped up from her place and a similar bubble formed before popping.
“I’m Bi Ah, pixie of love~”
Finally the yellow pixie followed after, “I’m Hana, pixie of sunshine!”
Hyun Mi waited expectantly for the last pixie who lounged on the palm of her hand playing with her blue dust nonchalantly. Maerin elbowed the girl sitting next to her and squeaked. As if the realization finally hit her, she floated up and proceeded to introduce herself.
“I’m Seul Yi, pixie of water,” she said and sat back down on Hyun Mi’s palm.
“I’m Ki Bum, pixie of fashion,” the elf interrupted their little ice breaker with a high pitched squeal and a flip of his short hair, mocking the little creatures.
All four of them shot up with angry expressions, identically collecting spell power in their hands, ready to attack the male again.
“Alright! No more messing around. Ki Bum, go figure out how to fix your face and you four, just don’t murder him,” Hyun Mi said and finally went back to her spell book next to the cauldron to complete what she should have done in the first place - open a portal.
She paid attention to the words on the book, carefully memorizing the specific word for opening the portal, reciting it over and over to make sure she got it right.
“Don’t screw it up aga-”
“Shut up.”
Hyun Mi took a deep breath and dumped in the ingredients into the pot for the third time, “Mama obata prodhanno kaendavimata!”
Finally what she intended for began to appear. Starting as a small whirl, a portal began to form with a white background in the opening. She opened , about to speak, until Ki Bum cut her off, “Alfea!”
The human girl’s hands balled into fists as she watched the white portal morph into an image of said dimension. She wanted to visit Olympus first but the Elf had summoned Alfea, the fairy dimension. Before she could yell at him, he had already disappeared into the portal. The four pixies sat on Hyun Mi’s shoulders while the girl picked up her bag, spell book and other important items, ensuring her spell canister was on her waist. Finally she went after Ki Bum.
“Yah! Kim Ki-” she yelled dreadfully loud before she realized she was in the heart of Alfea in the midst of hundreds of fairies. She clamped shut in embarrassment, only letting go to sheepishly utter a few apologies to the fairies staring at her.
“Ugh, will you ever have any class,” Ki Bum mocked as he strutted past her to look into the window of another boutique. Of course his first allowance had to be spent on clothes.
‘Maybe I could just ditch him here,’ Hyun Mi thought as she walked off into whichever direction her bad navigational senses brought her. After a good 15 minutes of walking, she finally came across a beverage shop that caught her attention. The bright colored signboard elegantly displayed the name of the place in a fancy cursive font - Pollen Juice Bar.
As Hyun Mi walked into the quaint place, she couldn’t stop admiring the fairies. All of them had translucent wings, similar to the pixies’ but on a much larger scale which showed off their intricate designs. Each fairy had distinct pairs of wings like they were fingerprints to humans. Though some had similar shapes, they had different ingrains and colors setting them all apart.
She allowed herself to absorb the peaceful atmosphere. There was definitely a serene ambience that surrounded this dimension, just as calm as the fairies themselves were. How much more peaceful can a race get if they were already capable of raising Unicorns as pets.
She finally walked up to the counter and looked at the available menu that looked as if it were a hologram, but in reality it was made of fairy dust. The light shimmer of the magical powder made the menu look stunning and Hyun Mi had a hard time concentrating on choosing a beverage.
When she finally pulled herself together, she ordered, “I’ll have one large Rose Blend, and a small Tulip Blend.”
“That will be six silver,” the male fairy behind the counter smiled kindly.
As Hyun Mi was grabbing her pouch, she was surprised to hear another voice pop up beside her, “Double that, please. Here’s twenty silver.”
The girl whipped her head to look at the unfamiliar male who was grinning greasily at her. The girl uttered an awkward ‘thank you’ and returned the smile. He then handed the cashier two coins, each worth 10 silver.
“And a large Lily Blend,” Ki Bum’s voice shattered Hyun Mi’s peace of mind, “He’ll pay.”
Ignoring the elf that plopped down on the seats of one of the booths with his mountain of shopping bags, she looked again to the male beside her. Whoever he was, she wanted to get to know him better.
