Of all the things that could have happened while running under the rain, my foot just had to get snagged at the base of the gate of Lu Han's house, causing me to plummet to the floor.
"Yeona!" Lu Han screamed as he was getting out of the main door, already carrying a towel. He had run ahead of me without explanation so I had to follow as fast as I could lest I lost sight of him amidst the many criss-cross alleyways in their neigborhood.
"I'm fine," I said as I pushed myself against the floor, only to nearly topple over again when the sudden pain from my ankle hit me like an electric shock.
Lu Han was already at my side, holding my arm and bearing my weight. "I didn't peg you as the clumsy type," he said as he wrapped the towel he had brought around me. Though my clothes were already soaked. Both of ours actually.
"If you hadn't run so fast then I wouldn't have been forced to follow just as quickly," I said as I shifted my weight to my other foot, allowing me to remove Lu Han's hand from my arms.
"Can you walk?" he asked, his hands outstretched towards me in case I couldn't.
I looked at Lu Han's waiting hands, debating whether I should accept them or just endure the pain and walk the small distance to their living room.
In between my hesitation, he crouched in front of me and said, "Get on."
"What? I can walk just fine," I said and coolly stepped around him, or at least tried to. The pain that travelled from my ankle to the rest of my body with every step forced me to limp and wince each time.
"Yeona, stop," Lu Han said behind me.
"Would you just lea-"
One second I was basically dragging my foot on the ground, the next I was up in midair, or more precisely, I was up in Lu Han's arms, the towel around me the only thing separating my bare arms from his hands. He had scooped me up as if I didn't weigh anything.
"Put me down," I said as calmly as I could and then tried to flail around when he suddenly started walking.
"Stop it," he said, drawing me even closer. "The lesser you put pressure on your ankle, the faster you will heal."
Since when did he care? Thoughts of Yoon and Yoomi's bet suddenly popped up in my head. What are you even thinking, Yeona? Yoon already said Lu Han doesn't like you.
"I'm injured but I'm not a disabled, okay? I can walk on my own." Still, it was awkward to be this close to him. I pushed against his chest but there was no budging him.
"The faster you will heal, the more you can help me with pet sitting Pookie," he went on, totally ignoring me.
Oh wait. "That's all this is about?" I said, finally deciding to stop struggling.
He raised a brow at me. "What did you think it was about?" Though the moment his eyes met mine, his ears went noticeably pink.
I avoided his gaze. I hated my twin siblings for putting ideas to my head. Of course this was about the dog. Hadn't it been because of the little riffraff that Lu Han relented to coming to his house for shelter from the rain?
Said dog barked at us the moment the door was open. He wagged his tail at Lu Han, already infatuated with his pet sitter.
Looking around, the living room looked as every bit as ours in that modern sort of way. It didn't look personal though considering not a single family picture was in sight or anything at all that would identify this living room as theirs, unlike ours which was lined up with countless picture frames and memorabilia of our family.
Despite my slightly dripping hair and clothes, Lu Han bypassed the living room and stopped in front of what I assumed was a bedroom.
"Mei?" Lu Han said and I squirmed in his arms, suddenly feeling the need to hide. But the door opened before I could tell him to put me down.
A girl with waist-length hair had opened it with a stoic expression in place. She didn't seem to find anything weird that Lu Han was carrying me in his arms.
"She needs some clothes," Lu Han said as if it was any explanation.
The girl stepped aside and Lu Han put me down on the girl's bed.
"I thought you'd maybe like to change first," he said, not quite looking at me. "You can borrow some of my sister's clothes. I'll be outside. " And he left, just like that, leaving me alone with his sister who was now frowning at me.
Instead of biting off my head for bothering her, she went to her closet and handed me a shirt and a jogging pants. She took one look at my ankle and then also left the room, leaving me to myself.
Okay? That must be one of my weirdest experiences yet. I didn't hesitate shedding my wet clothes in exchange for the dry ones Lu Han's sister gave me. Then I limped my way to the door and opened it. Pookie barked, announcing my presence.
Lu Han was already in dry comfortable clothes as well and was lounging at the sofa with his sister. He whispered something to her before coming to stand in front of me and the girl just raised his eyebrow at him.
"The sky isn't letting up at the moment," he said to me and I sensed the real statement behind his words. What did I want to do now?
I glanced at my injured ankle and shrugged. "I guess I'm not going anywhere for the time being."
I didn't know how he did it but Lu Han's expression was bordering between relief and horror at my statement.
"I guess we can watch some TV?" He shrugged and then hesitated, not quite knowing whether to offer his arm or carry me again.
"I can walk fine," I said and thankfully, he left me to my own.
"This is Meimei, by the way. My little sister," he said, ruffling the girl's hair on his way to the sofa.
"I'm not little anymore," Meimei snapped at him and to me, she nodded her head. "Hi. You must be Yeona. "
How did she
