Wrapping his bright red scarf around himself and shoving his hands in the pockets of his oversized trench coat he turns his back on you, fighting back the tears that threaten to fall and pretending not to see the crushing hurt in your eyes.

When he’s far away enough that he can turn around and not see you, he runs, runs past the almost-barren trees that frame the pathway, the crunch of dry maple leaves under his feet.

There’s even more maple leaves falling from the branches above him, drifting down in reds and oranges and the whole thing would be picturesque if it wasn’t so heartbreaking, the dead leaves a reminder of the icy cold winter ahead.
