Your past is catching up with you (edited)

I'm Not A Monster

Breaking news: The criminal 'Choi Seungcheol', arrested five months ago and better known as 'S.Coups', escaped from prison. Why and how he did it isn't known to us yet but we advise everyone to be extremely careful. This person has killed 12 people in their past and is classified as highly psychopathic. If you happen to see this man please inform the police immediately. We will keep you informed on further progress of the investigations.

He slammed his hand down on the desk, whereupon, among other things his half-filled coffee cup, began to sway dangerously. It felt as if it had been only yesterday when he and his co-workers were celebrated for solving one of their most difficult cases. Their boss had even bought pizza for everyone. Jeonghan had been the hero of the day because he had finally arrested him. That criminal whom the police had been trying to catch for ages.

Choi Seungcheol who acted under the pseudonym 'S.Coups'. A psychopath right out of a thriller. He had stabbed 12 people and left the crime scenes a bloody mess, quite literally speaking. Jeonghan had gone through hell and back, finding S.Coups and therefore had been more than happy that the police had been able to track him down. Storming into the house and putting handcuffs on that man had made Jeonghan forget the past months of utter psychological terror. No more deaths, no more messages, no more S.Coups.

Back then Jeonghan had conducted the interrogation and although S.Coups was putting on a perfect mask, Jeonghan noticed that something didn't seem to match.

The criminal sitting in front of him wasn't saying much, nothing to be exact. He just sat on his chair across from Jeonghan, dressed in a straitjacket, looking at him. The only reason he had to open his mouth was so he could show his wicked grin. It reflected the pure insanity of his mind, directly for everyone to see. But his eyes were by far the worst. Despite the lack of physical movement his eyes radiated pure energy. They didn't seem emotionless, like the rest of him. On the contrary, there was a fire burning behind them and they were directly fixed on Jeonghan. It seemed like his eyes were the only part of his body that wasn't under his full control. They seemed...odd. Like in those questions in IQ tests "which picture doesn't belong?". His eyes were the odd picture, not belonging to the rest of his body.

Although Jeonghan was supposed to have gotten used to looking a criminal in their eyes, he couldn't help but shiver a bit everytime his eyes met S.Coups'. Yet he never avoided the eye contact, hell, he was even craving it. Too big his curiosity. But it didn't matter for how long he stared back, he couldn't shake off this certain feeling, like something didn't seem to match.

Ovver the time, Jeonghan became more and more frustrated because of the fact that S.Coups still hadn't spoken a single word. Files were scattered across the floor, after Jeonghan had gone through every single one of S.Coups' cases. His boss must have been monitoring the interrogation and noticed the desperation on Jeonghan's face, because, after some time he entered the room and told the detective, rather impatiently, to take a break.
Jeonghan didn't have many other options than letting his boss try his best while he observed everything from behind the fake mirror.

But even his boss wasn't any more successful.

As soon as he started shouting into S.Coups' face the criminal completely blocked and blankly stared towards Jeonghan, as if he could see through the mirror and knew, the detective was standing behind it. Soon Jeonghan gave up his spot behind the mirror, having had enough of those piercing eyes for today, and headed back to his office. It would be the best for him not to think about this case too much. S.Coups was one crazy guy and he tried to convince himself that wanting to find out what was going in that man's sick brain was a bad idea. It was probably something even worse than that.

Soon after the interrogation, the day of the trial arrived. As Jeonghan woke up that morning he didn't even want to get out of bed. Seeing that killer's face again was the last thing he wanted to do on that day, but he obviously had to attend since he had arrested S.Coups and needed to testify in court.
There wasn't much of a discussion, though, because everyone was more or less convinced that S.Coups had committed those murders. Moreover, a psychological certificate proved him to be a highly psychopathic, dangerous man with an own sense of justice and without any mercy for those he chooses to kill.

After the trial he went directly into the high-security wing of the prison, but not without making quite a scene while being escorted out of the court room. The police officer leading him was trying his best to just keep walking towards the exid, but S.Coups managed to pass the bench Jeonghan was seated on as close as possible. Everyone in the room could see how fixed S.Coups was on the detective and hushed whispers were exchanged.

The expression on his face was something Jeonghan wouldn't be able to forget too quickly. Dangerous eyes. Green, just like deadly venom that was trying to make its way into Jeonghan's brain, eager to poison every inch of it. But again, Jeonghan didn't break the eye contact until both, S.Coups and the officer, had left the room. Partly because he was too intimidated to move a muscle, but also because he was curious. Somehow he knew that something was going on behind those green eyes and he hated himself for not being able to find out what exactly it was.

But life goes on and his work made him forget about S.Coups pretty quickly. But there he was again, and Jeonghan couldn't help but to think that now, S.Coups wanted to do a little more than just to hold a little staring contest.

While the person on TV was done with their report about S.Coups and started switching to politics instead, the screen suddenly turned black.
Jeonghan turned around to see his boss Jackson Wang in his whole 5'10" glory, leaning against the doorframe holding the remote in his hand.  His visibly clenched teeth and the frown on his face gave away that he probably had something really serious on his mind. At the latest as he left his spot by the door and approached Jeonghan slowly, he knew that the news his boss had to tell couldn't be particularly good.

"You do remember that case, right?"

Jeonghan nodded with a grim expression. How could he ever forget a case like that?

"Good. Because I want you to pack your stuff and drive to that prison. You were asked to look through his cell accurately because you have the most knowledge about him since... well, you know what happened during that time... maybe you can find anything useful. But don't talk too much with the other detectives when you're there. It's not exactly our case and they probably won't welcome you with open arms."

Jeonghan tilted his head in confusion but his boss only said that he had his sources and then he was gone as quickly as he had come.
He shook his head. That guy was always in a hurry.

Jeonghan had weird feeling in his stomach as he stood in front of S.Coups' cell. Usually he wasn't particularly fond of spending his free time sniffing around in other people's privacy more than necessary, but orders were orders.

The cell door was opened by an officer and Jeonghan stepped in slowly. Immediately he was confronted by a cloud of old and moldy smell but what else would you expect from a prison cell? He scanned the inside of the room with his eyes a few times. Bed, toilet, sink, wardrobe, a small table with a bunch of scattered papers on it and the grey, cold stone wall.

After that short inspectio,n Jeonghan started to move around, careful not to touch anything without his gloves on, originally not to leave any finger prints but mainly because coming in contact with anything in this room was getting him very close to throwing up. The presence of the criminal had left a dark impact on this room as well as on Jeonghan himself. It felt just like two strong hands tightening their grip around his throat more and more. He closed his eyes for a moment and tried taking a few deep breaths, ignoring the disgusting smell.

This is your job, Jeonghan. So get yourself together. S.Coups is not here anymore and by now probably in another country as well. He is not here. You're alone in this cell. Now stop being such a baby.

After a few more seconds of assuring himself that he was completely and absolutely safe, Jeonghan opened his eyes again. He breathed out heavily and shook his head as if he wanted to shove his negative thoughts aside. But mainly he was just confused about his own reactions. As a homicide detective he was used to quite something and this particular situation was nothing compared to the situations he had been in.

Jeonghan remembered the countless times some gangster had pointed a gun to his head and those memories still sent shivers down his spine. Those things don't just happen and then you never think about them again. They affect you. Even though, as a detective you can never show your emotions during cases. Showing that you are scared of something is like presenting the criminal your weaknesses on a silver tablet. And depending on the level of intelligence of the person holding the gun, this could be your death sentence.

So why was Jeonghan scared to the point that he couldn't breathe properly in a situation that, in all objectivity, was no threat to his wellbeing at all?
Probably because of the shared past between him and S.Coups.

Jeonghan had been the leading detective for the entire S.Coups-investigation and so, he had obviously caught the eye of him. Soon after that, the criminal started to leave messages at the crime scenes letting Jeonghan know that he knew who was investigating. At first Jeonghan didn't take this seriously but as S.Coups started leaving photos of Jeonghan that had been taken in secret, he became more and more paranoid. He could swear that S.Coups had even been to his house, since a few things didn't seem to be in the same spots as Jeonghan had left them. Basically, S.Coups knew him but Jeonghan didn't know a thing about S.Coups, apart from what he wanted him to know. Usually Jeonghan was the one in control, the one with the law on his side. But this time it felt like he was helplessly exposed to a danger that no one seemed to be able to assess. Luckily he had his best friends Mingyu and Joshua to help and comfort him and after S.Coups was sent to prison everything slowley went back to normal. Until today.

And here Jeonghan was again, coming in contact with the criminal, or at least the dark aura he had put on this room. And it made him feel just like it had before. Helpless and suffocating in the darkness that was this person. This room.
But he couldn't just run away and send someone else to do  this job. His boss was right. As macabre as it sounds, but Jeonghan did know S.Coups best. He knew what kind of tricks he would play and how good his abilities of manipulating others were. He had gotten a taste of that himself, more or less involuntarily. So there was no chance he was going to run away again. He needed to ignore his feelings and do his job as accurately and objectively as possible.

There was only one thing in this room to catch his attention so he decided to take a closer look at the papers on the table. Everything else was more or less like in every other of these cells.

The first papers were filled with useless pencil lines. At least Jeonghan couldn't recognize any sort of pattern in them. It seemed like the one who drew these had often not been happy with his work and started all over again. This reminded Jeonghan a little bit of himself. He didn't like it either if things weren't going the way he wanted them to.

But as Jeonghan kept picking up pages the lines slowly began to form an actual picture. Soon he could recognize a dog and cats on the paper. There were still many wild pencil lines but you could clearly see what it was supposed to portray.
Jeonghan was pretty confused, finding these kind of drawings in the cell of an alleged psychopath since he was pretty sure those people weren't particularly fond of animals.

But not all of the drawings were animals. As Jeonghan reached for the last page he froze. It was obvious what this page was supposed to portray. It was a lifelike drawing of Jeonghan himself, definitely the most detailed drawing in the whole stack. You could even recognize the scenery and the background.
It was in the court room when S.Coups had been passing by Jeonghan. The drawing showed the scenery out of S.Coups' eyes and was obviously focusing on the detective. While the people in the back were just drawn as blurry shadows, his face and expression were really detailed. He was wondering, though, if he had really looked that terrified or if S.Coups was just exaggerating to fit his sick fantasies.

Regardless of all these little details, Jeonghan's head on the picture was graced with a big red circle and everyone could assume what that was supposed to mean. Jeonghan swallowed the lump that had formed inside his throat and put on a professional face. He had caught S.Coups once and the fact that he now was after Jeonghan himself should make it even easier to catch him again.

Since Jeonghan had now seen every page he put all of  them back on the table with slightly shaking hands and decided to take a second look around.
The closet was mostly empty. Only a few clothes which seemed like they were almost a decade old, were in it. Jeonghan closed the door and focused on the very neatly made bed to his right. Even after he took a closer look he couldn't find one wrinkle in the sheets. But that was nothing he could be considerate of right now and apart from the fact that all this was his job, he really wanted to find more evidence on S.Coups' plans after looking at this drawing. It made him feel like S.Coups knew something that he didn't. And he hated that feeling.

But little did he know that S.Coups would always be more than just one step ahead of him and with his current mindset there was absolutely nothing he could do about it.

After he had thrown pillow and blanket to the floor Jeonghan was now taking a closer look at the mattress.
And so he found the photo that S.Coups had carefully put between mattress and bed frame.
