A Million Goodbyes

Description

Lee Rina was just an average girl trying to handle school and work. It wasn’t until she met Jungkook that she began to fall madly in love. However, when Jungkook goes on tour and their relationship begins to go haywire, Rina must decide if she needs to wait for him or move on to Mark Tuan, the epitome of the perfect boyfriend who begins to change her feelings for Jungkook. Whom will she choose? Will she make the right decision?

Foreword

I walk through the streets of Seoul, wind whipping my hair across my face and leaves falling around me, drawing a picture of old memories. I stop in front of a coffee shop, hesitating before reaching out to grab the handle. At once, the familiar smell of nutmeg and the cute plush couple couches envelope me. Despite the warm invitation, I felt a tinge of sadness and regret within this normally happy-go-lucky state of mind. The overwhelming feeling brings the beginning of tears to my eyes and I force a smile in a bitter-sweet way. Not able to handle it much longer, I turn back around and leave the small shop before one of the employees can ask me what I want to order, for I, myself, remember doing just that years ago…

10 years ago, in the same coffee shop, you, Lee Rina, worked as a part-time employee. Juggling work and school definitely wasn’t your strong suit, but somehow, you managed to do remarkably well in both. You loved the warm and inviting smell of nutmeg from the kitchen and always stalled between orders in order to stay in the back. School life? You always had a knack for finishing your school work on time. You never fell into the habit of procrastination and never had. Social life? Of course, you had friends. You hung out on the weekends occasionally--if college wasn’t killing you with work. Love life? None. You didn’t have any experience with boys and wasn’t planning on getting involved with them any time soon. It had never crossed your mind that you would eventually start dating, then get married and raise a family. So, what were you to expect when an extremely handsome man walked through the door of that old coffee shop with your friend, Jeon Jihye.

Your mind went blank when he asked for a Caramel Frappuccino. Jihye noticed her friend’s blank expression. “Oh, Rina, this is my brother, Jungkook.” Jihye gently nudged the man standing next to her and nodded her head towards you. “Jungkook, this is my friend Rina. She was the first friend I met when I transferred here.” Jungkook looked at you and you blinked up at him.

His eyes were a light brown and his hair was dyed a maroon-red color, gelled up to expose his forehead. He wore skinny jeans and a white t-shirt with a jean jacket over it. He had three piercings on each ear and pink plump lips. He smiled at you and stuck out his hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Jungkook. Jeon Jungkook.” You smiled dumbly and took his hand.

“Lee Rina. It’s nice to meet you, too. Jihye’s an amazing person. I love hanging out with her.” you manage to squeak. His smile widened and your heart skipped a beat.

“That’s great! I’m glad she’s not a nuisance. It happens sometimes,” he joked. You laugh along and finally, finally, get their order and turn around to catch your breath. How can someone be so hot and so nice at the same time?? you think. There was no way you had fallen so quickly for him. That only happened in dramas right? Right? You walked to the back to make their coffee, unable to focus on anything. Miraculously, you were able to get through both coffees without messing anything up and placed them on a tray to carry out. The two siblings were sitting at a small table chattering about the chaos of finals week, when you placed their order on the table.

“Enjoy your coffee!” you say and turn around.

“Wait! Rina, right? You should come stay with us. Aren’t you tired of working?” Jungkook’s voice sounds from behind you and you stiffen. Oh, crap. What am I supposed to say? You turn around and smile.

“Sorry, my shift isn’t over yet. Otherwise, I’d love to.” Unfortunately for you, Jihye had picked up on your working habits and yanked you down into the chair next to her.

“Your shift was over half an hour ago. Stop overworking yourself. Talking for a minute won’t kill you.”

That’s how it all started, how my nonexistent love life became a whirlwind of experiences. I loved everything about him. From the moment we locked eyes, I knew we were meant to be. Sure, we had ups and downs in our relationship but I knew that we would always find each other. He made me so happy. I remember one night we were up late stargazing and enjoying each other's company. He rolled over grabbed my hand, kissed it and said, “I'm going to marry you, Rina.” I was the happiest girl alive.

We were inseparable, Jungkook and I.

But were we?
