When Bad Boys Don't Listen

Nini, let's play!

It was a quiet afternoon, nap time was curiously being skipped because who had time to nap when the sun was bright and early on this particular spring day? Surely not Kyungsoo nor his best friend Jongin.

“Ready?” Kyungsoo whispered to Jongin’s bright little face.

The boy nodded vigorously.

“Okay, here we go!”

The two, holding tightly to one another’s hands, had jumped high off Kyungsoo’s dresser and onto his bed. They were in great hopes for Nini to go flying up in the air. For some reason, Kyungsoo was dead set that Nini needed to fly; that it was the teddy bear’s direst wish.

However the two boys were so disappointed to find that the bear simply fell over and hardly got its stubby little tail off the bed sheets.

“Aw man!” Kyungsoo bemoaned as the two boys scrambled up from the crumpled mess.

“Maybe we need get closer.” Jongin added as he poked his head up.

“No! That wouldn’t really work. He needs to be further.” Kyungsoo had puffed out his little chest as he walked all over his bed to place the teddy bear even further. Jongin didn’t even think to refute the elder, because whenever Kyungsoo was confident in something it always made Jongin feel safe. Why should this situation be any different?

Before either boy was aware of it, they were both back on top of Kyungsoo’s dresser and jumping onto his bed. This time the teddy bear hardly flinched, the only reason why it moved was because of the shock the entire bed went through.

Little Kyungsoo was about to comment on it, however, the two boys froze upon the sound of Kyungsoo’s mother calling for them.

“Kyungsoo? Kyungsoo is that you?” Her melodious voice called from down the stairs.

The two boys panicked and scrambled around until they were under covers and pretending to be asleep. Jongin was so caught up in trying to be close to Kyungsoo to be safe from a possible scolding mother that he accidentally bumped their heads. The two whined and rubbed their heads, but a couple of giggles were soon followed after. The two settled with being so close that their arms were mangled in one another’s and each other’s heat felt more comfortable than a hot, chocolate-chip cookie. They were smiling like buffoons under the covers, waiting for Kyungsoo’s mother to open the door.

“Kyungsoo wha—” The curious woman had opened the door and found two lumps on Kyungsoo’s bed to what she presumed to be fast asleep boys. But she was not a slow mother, she could hear every little bit of what they were doing. It sounded exactly like two little, now five year old boys, were jumping on top of a bed. What Kyungsoo failed to realize was that his room was just above the kitchen, where Mrs. Do was wonderfully cooking away for the night’s dinner.

She grimaced and narrowed her eyes at the two lumps, waiting just a second more to see if one would break into a fit of giggles. Kyungsoo often did.

“Hmmmm…” She sung quizzically before closing the door. Just as she did so, she waited behind the door to see if either boy would get up to start a ruckus again. She waited for a good long while too but neither boy made so much as a peep.

“Is she gone?” Jongin asked in his soft and cute little nasal voice.

“Yeah! She just left!” Kyungsoo whispered back as he peeked from under the covers to look at the shadows coming from under his doorway. The sneaky little devils.

“Okay let’s try something else now.” Kyungsoo flung the sheets up and quickly sat to his knees to grab Nini.

Jongin sat up right, watching whatever Kyungsoo’s little devious mind would be plotting. Both the two’s cheeks were bright red from the overheating under the covers and the shear euphoric adrenaline of being bad boy’s skipping out on their naps.

“Okay. This is what we’re gonna do. We put Nini here and I’ll take one end of the sheet and you take the other and then we’ll go, poof!” Kyungsoo threw his body up so that it would fall flat on the bed side. It earned a wonderful giggle from Jongin’s bright lips. Kyungsoo watched as the other laughed, oh how he loved it when Jongin laughed, he loved the power of being able to make the latter laugh hysterically. “Ready?!” Kyungsoo sat up and started getting into position.

Jongin nodded vigorously as he did the same thing Kyungsoo was doing. He grabbed both ends of the comforter, just like Kyungsoo, and held them at the farthest end of the bed.

“Okay. On the count of three, we’ll fling him up.”

“Mhm!” Jongin nodded again, his cheeks still so bright and happy.

“One…” Kyungsoo wiggled his , just as if it would get him slightly further on his bed when he was already at the very edge. “Two…” Jongin watched with anticipation as he counted down, the two making a strong connection in their gaze. “Three!”

The two boys pull the corners of the comforter apart, as far as their small arms would let and watched as Nini’s poor body went flying into the air.

“Again, again!” Kyungsoo nearly shouted as Nini fell back into the comforter.

This time as they let Nini go, he had gone so high that he had touched the ceiling. For some reason that was the best thing in the entire world to the two boys and laughed triumphantly at the bear.

They went on again, getting at least three other flings of the bear in the air. The boys were just so happy that they hadn’t thought twice about how loud they were. Little did they know, that a rather upset mother was making her way up the stairs.

“Up, up!” Kyungsoo shrieked.

The two boys had taken to rumbling the comforter, letting Nini tumble around.

“Ah ha!” Kyungsoo’s mother burst through the door and pointed at the two guilty boys.

Kyungsoo and Jongin were already making their way back under the sheets as soon as the door swung open. Giggling and laughing as they tried to make it seem like they hadn’t been doing anything wrong. But it was too late, mother had already caught the two.

“Oh no you don’t.” Kyungsoo’s mother stormed in and made her target directly for the two boys. “Who’s under those sheets?! Come on! Out!” She sat on the side of the bed and started tickling the two boys furiously.

The two youngins were laughing away, trying to push the hands that tried to tickle them to near death.

“Nooo! Mommy! Stooooop!” Kyungsoo pleaded, but Jongin just took it all and laughed his pure heart out.

“Bad little boys who don’t listen to their mother have to be punished!” She kept on, trying to pull the covers down from the two’s faces and get a look at them.

However, as the two fought against her, Jongin began to cough. At first Kyungsoo’s mother couldn’t hear it, but as Kyungsoo’s body stopped moving and Jongin began to cough more she noticed something was wrong.

“Jongin?!” Mrs. Do quickly removed the covers and looked to see what was wrong. “Jonginnie, sweetheart, breathe. Please breathe.” She helped the boy up, one hand on his chest and another rubbing his back.

Kyungsoo sat up on his arm as Jongin coughed into his hand, his brows furrowed and eyes wide in worry. But just as soon as Jongin was coughing away did they subside and he was breathing in small little wheezes.

“Oh heavens…” Mrs. Do breathed out as she let a hand cup the boy’s flush face. “Are you alright? Does anything hurt? Are you dizzy?” She berated him.

“I’m a little dizzy…” Jongin managed out.

“How’s your chest? Does it hurt?”

“No…” He shook his head in small gestures.

“Okay. Do I need to get your medicine?”

“No, I’m okay.” Jongin coughed slightly before looking up at the worried woman and smiling sweetly.

Mrs. Do in a breath and held it for a good long while before letting it out.

“Boys. This is exactly why you have to be more careful now. I know this was my fault for getting you more excited than needed, but when it’s nap time, you nap. Do you understand?” Her voice was firm, enough to make both boy’s cheeks blush in embarrassment.

Kyungsoo and Jongin nodded slowly, both sorry and mortified at their wrong doing.

“Jongin really needs to rest now. So both of you stop playing and rest. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes mommy.”

“Yes, Mrs. Do.”

“Goodness, I’ve practically half raised you child. I’ve told you to just call me mother.” She got up from the bed and helped Jongin under the covers. “I’ll be back with a cup of water for you sweetie.” She made her exit and left the door open this time.

The two boys laid down in silence. Kyungsoo watched as Jongin tried to get his breathing under control, his chest rising and falling in large differences.

“Are you okay?” Kyungsoo asked in a soft and sincere voice. He nearly felt like crying.

“I’m okay.” Jongin turned his head over to Kyungsoo and smiled.

Before Kyungsoo could say anything else, his mother had returned with a plastic children’s cup full of water. “Here you are.” The spill proof cup had a straw sticking out, perfect to not have the young boy strain his neck. She sat back on the edge of the bed helping Jongin up just a bit.

Jongin craned his neck just a bit to get the sip he needed, grateful to wash down the sore and dry throat he had been attaining.

“Thank you, mother.” Jongin smiled sweetly once again when Kyungsoo’s mother placed the cup on the dresser.

“What am I going to do with you?” Mrs. Do said more to herself than anything as she stared at the small boy in front of her.

Kyungsoo and Jongin just stared at her.

The woman sighed for the umpteenth time and leaned down to kiss Jongin’s forehead. “Please rest.” She whispered to the two boys as she leaned over to kiss Kyungsoo’s forehead, too.

“We will.” Kyungsoo said affirmatively, his voice getting soft with the sleep that was creeping up.

“Good. Grow big and strong as you sleep. My little men.” She smiled and got up from the bed. “I’ll be downstairs if you need me. I’ll leave the door open this time. Sleep tight.” She made her exit and turned the light in the room off, as she did so, she lingered for just a second more—watching the two boys to make sure they would stay asleep this time.

Once the woman was gone Kyungsoo looked up to make sure they were alone.

He quickly got up from his spot and picked up Nini who had been lodged in between the bed and wall to place in between the two of them. Kyungsoo then proceeded inch his body closer to Jongin so that the boy was just fitting into the curve of his neck. Nini had been squished between their two small bodies.

“Go ahead and sleep. Nini and I will protect you.” Had been the last thing to come out of Kyungsoo’s mouth before the two found sleep in each other’s arms.

Chapter 5: I can't get enough of these boys!
These boys reminded me when I was small. My sister and I were playing under our parent's bed. Imagining we're in an adventure while my dad was sleeping on it. And of course 2 children won't be as quite as they thought. We're scolded by him real bad. We were so upset and I was planning to run away from home. Putting my toys in a bandana and tied it to a poll (like in the cartoon) we trotted down the stairs and my mom saw us. She asked what we were doing. While sobbing I said we were gonna run away coz dad hate us and she comforted us. I laughed everytime I think about it.. (can I ask this as a prompt?)
