Good Ol' Days

Polar.

After the incident with Sungwon, Mingyu became slightly cautious of what he did on the streets. Not out of fear, he could easily handle Sungwon and his group of followers, but just incase Wonwoo got involved somehow. He alerted the rest of the boys, and one day at school during lunch, the usual 4 were together and the fact of the matter came up.

"What exactly did he say to you?" Minghao asked, then took a bite of sushi

"I'm not too sure, just like, lame pick up lines, I guess"

"This is what you get for being so attractive." Mingyu said, sternly and shaking his head as if in disapproval,

"Yeah, yeah. Keep talking Mr. Received like 6 confessions and boxes of chocolates yesterday"

"Yah, it's not like I accepted them" Mingyu said as he took a sip of Wonwoo's bubble tea.

"You're saying that like I purposely accepted his passes at me" Wonwoo said, snatching the bubble tea back and taking a sip himself.

Mingyu smiled at his boyfriend, and laughed childishly,

"Hehe, love you too."

Wonwoo made a face and started mocking his boyfriend's words and Mingyu started laughing and hugged him.

"Wonwoo, did he do anything to you?" Jun asked, concerned

"No, he just talked... I was scared though," he explained

"If he had touched Wonwoo, I'd be in jail right now." Mingyu said, completely serious.

"Don't joke like that, babe" Wonwoo said, hitting Mingyu in the arm lightly,

"He wasn't joking." Minghao said, his serious tone shifting the mood.

"I mean, it's just the way we are... I'm surprised I held back on Sungwon after what he did to Seokmin. If anyone touched Jun, I swear I would-"

"Okay, we get it."

Mingyu said, trying to ease his friend. He laughed awkwardly as the air had become tense, as Minghao became a bit heated at the situation. Wonwoo smiled awkwardly too, slightly proud that it wasn't his boyfriend losing his cool this time. Jun pat Minghao on the back, and the boys resumed eating, the tense air despersing and their conversation regained its free and flowing feeling. The rest of the lunch went by with the 4 boys conversing with one another, just as most of their lunches do. After school, Mingyu and Wonwoo went to their respective homes, promising that they'd text each other or FaceTime, or contact each other using any other form of communication. Minghao and Jun decided to hang out, and ended up walking to the base. The conversation that had occured during lunch had risen some questions in Jun's mind, considering he didn't know who Seokmin was. The couple was walking holding hands, but Minghao was mainly leading the way,

"Oh right... You've only been here a few times, right?" the blue haired boy said, smiling at his boyfriend. Jun nodded with a smile on his face in response.

"Minghao-ah, I have a question" Jun said.

"Shoot" the other replied,

"Who's Seokmin?"

Minghao thought for a second and then began nodded his head,

"Ahh~ right. I don't think I've ever told you... Guess it's your turn to hear the story" he said.

When they got to the base, they inspected around and found that they were alone and decided to just lay on the couch and cuddle. As they cuddled, Minghao told the story of Seokmin, similar to what Wonwoo had heard on Christmas Day. Jun didn't cry but he felt sadness, and anger emitting from his boyfriend as he tightened his arms around him. Minghao managed to finish telling the story and Jun said, kind of mindlessly,

"So that's why he was so cold...", he gasped slightly scolding himself for his tactless words. Minghao chuckled,

"Yeah... A lot of people misunderstand him."

"He barely lets anyone get close to him.. I'm surprised that him and Wonwoo ended up together."

"I am too... It still amazes me that Wonwoo managed to get him to open up like that," Minghao said,

"You have to take into consideration what Mingyu's been through... I heard he was a total to you in the beginning," he continued, laughing, and Jun laughed too,

"But, I think he feels that the less people involved with him the better."

"Isn't that kind of lonely?" Jun said as he took Minghao's hand in his, and starting playing with the ring around his pinky.

"Yeah, ofcourse it is. I mean, I guess he has us... But then again, it lessens the chances of anything like Seokmin's case happening again." Minghao said, truthfully.

Silence came over the two, and lasted for a few minutes.

"They're such a mismatched couple." Jun said, giggling.

"Mingyu always used to say 'opposites attract', when we asked about Seokmin," Minghao laughed too.

"Babe, what kind of person was Seokmin?"

"Hmm. An amazing one. Always smiling. Managed to get Mingyu to open up, so in his own way he's like Wonwoo."

"Ah~, I see..." Jun replied, and then silence took over again.

The couple dropped the topic, and just started conversing about random things and topics that happened to make their way into their exchanging words. As they were conversing, Jun and Minghao fell asleep in each other's arms, using each other's warmth instead of blankets. The silence in the room, along with the peaceful breathing of the couple, was abruptly interrupted by loud bangs on the door. Minghao woke up immediately and was sure to hush Jun when he woke up, slightly scared and panicked. Minghao held Jun close and placed a finger on his mouth, asking his boyfriend to make the silent building remain that way. Meanwhile, the banging continued relentlessly, and furiously. Considering the person wasn't just walking in, Minghao immediately knew it wans't one of the boys. It could be the police, but the police hadn't disturbed them once, within the 3 years they've been hanging out there. Also, there was something about the way the person 'knocked' that meant they were there for serious, maybe violent business, not professional like an officer would knock. Quietly, Minghao got up from the couch and took out his phone. He wrote a note and showed his screen to Jun,

"Go hide, and text Mingyu. Tell him that there's some trouble at the base, and to get here as fast as possible. Go upstairs, I'll deal with whoever's at the door."

Jun gave a concerned face to Minghao, who smiled and began typing another note,

"I won't let anything happen to you, I promise."

Jun then silently followed his boyfriend's instructions. Slightly worried, but put his faith in Minghao and went up the stairs, not making a single noise, which Minghao was thankful for, but also a little weirded out by. Jun stopped at the landing and took out his phone, he began texting Mingyu. Mingyu replied with a single letter 'k', and then the chestnut haired boy sat and waited. Meanwhile, Minghao began silently making his way to the door which scared him when he got close, and the person on the other side banged on it again.

"Yah~, is anyone home~?" the voice said, and Minghao didn't need to look out the window anymore. The voice was enough.

"Sungwon, what do you want?" Minghao yelled back, not opening the door just yet.

"Oh! Who is that? Mingyu-ah? Jihoon-ah?", Sungwon replied, then he started laughing then continued on to yell,

"I'm not hearing anything... Maybe it's Seokmin?"

Minghao punched the door, hard enough to deliver the message that it wasn't Seokmin, and that the person it actually was wasn't in the mood for Sungwon's messing around, and to leave a dent in the door. It was also hard enough to send Sungwon back in shock,

"He-hey, don't get feisty now, I just want to talk."

Sungwon leaned on the door from the other side,

"C'mon, let's just talk about a couple of things... We're grown men, right?"

Minghao opened the door, and was greeted by Sungwon's not so cheerful face, and behind him were multiple boys who had smirks on their faces.

"What do you want?" the blue haired boy asked as he backed up to let the other boys in.

"Let's talk about some things, yeah?" Sungwon said.

Even though Minghao let him in, the didn't completely trust Sungwon. He just hoped to God that they wouldn't find Jun, and was impatiently waiting for Mingyu who he was hoping was on his way. Minghao stood in defense mode, his fists clenched just incase Sungwon decided to use actions instead of words to convey whatever message he was here to deliver. His fists were stuffed in his pocket though, to tell Sungwon that for now, he meant peace.

"What things?" Minghao said, his voice steady and calm, yet somehow intimidating

Jun was tempted to peek at the situation, but he was rational and thought about his safety and just settled with the audio of the interaction downstairs.

"Say, let me and the boys hve this base, hm?"

Minghao gave the other a bizarre look,

"You guys have been here for 3 years! Don't you think it's time that you move out? Give some of us a chance to hang out in this awesome building, yeah?"

Minghao scoffed, and was about to reply when a voice came from the doorway said,

"Over my dead body."

The voice shows no sign of hesitation or doubt, the tone was steady and didn't waver a single beat. The group of boys turned around and was greeted by Mingyu's face, his forehead slightly beaded with sweat and Minghao had concluded that Mingyu had ran there, and was amazed that Mingyu managed to speak like that to Sungwon without being out of breath.

"Yah, as expected of our leader."

Minghao thought as he gave Mingyu a slick smirk, which the other didn't notice as he was staring Sungwon down.

"Oh, Mingyu-ah! Just in time. Say, why don't you boys retire off the streets and give this hang out to us." Sungwon said, placing an overly friendly hand on Mingyu's shoulder.

Mingyu looked at the hand, and roughly brushed it off with a disgusted look on his face. He then cleared his throat and said,

"Yah.", the tall boy took a step closer to Sungwon who's smirk had disappeared.

"Did you not understand me? I said over my dead body." Mingyu repeated, his cold eyes staring down at Sungwon. The boy smirked and started laughing,

"Yah... I did it once. You think I won't do it again? This time it won't be Seokmin, it'll be-"

Mingyu punched Sungwon in the face, his fist swinging and landing a solid punch on Sungwon's face. Before the boy could recover, Mingyu immediately took him by the collar and lifted him off the ground,

"I swear to God if you mention Seokmin again, I will bash your head open."

The boys around them went after Mingyu, some landing a couple of punches on his stomach which didn't faze him, and they were quickly stopped by Minghao.

"C'mon! I said I wanted to talk... Or do you want to use our fists, like the good ol' days, hm?"

Mingyu put the boy down, and Sungwon started laughing and wiped the blood from his lips using his wrist.

"Let's go, boys. Looks like Mingyu won't be giving in today." he said as he gathered his followers and started walking out the door. Before he left, he said,

"We'll be back."

"We'll still be here." Mingyu replied, as Minghao walked up to be at his side.

The door closed, and Jun popped his head from around the corner of the stairs, and was relieved when he just saw Mingyu and Minghao standing there. He let out the breath he was unaware he was holding, and meekly went down the stairs.

"They're choosing to start trouble, now? After 3 years, you would think they would learn their lesson," Mingyu was saying as Jun finally got close enough to the duo that he could hear their conversation.

"Oh, Jun, thanks for texting me." Mingyu said, and Jun smiled in reply, "Oh! You didn't happen to text Wonwoo... did you?"

"Nope, just texted you." the boy replied as he made his way to Minghao. The taller sighed in relief,

"Great. If he knew about this, he would probably just be worried, and I'd rather him not know about what goes on here, or atleast the 'scary' parts of it." he said.

Mingyu pat Minghao on the back, and said he was going to go home, and to just text or call him again just incase the boys came back.

Thankfully, Sungwon and his mindless followers didn't come back that night... but unfortunately, that night wouldn't be the last they saw of them.

In fact, throughout the week, things got worse.

Extremely worse.

It started with just shenanigans occuring at the base, nothing really too serious. But then it escalated to small fights, which the boys would obviously win, but the fights grew execessive. To the point where, Minghao and Mingyu were almost constantly late, or didn't come to school for half of the day because they were at the base, dealing with Sungwon. One day at school, Mingyu and Wonwoo were talking. The Class President was looking at the bruises and cuts on his boyfriend's hands, and face. It's been a while since he's seen his boyfriend in this state, and to be frank, he didn't quite like it. He didn't like the way Mingyu's knuckles were almost always cut, and he didn't like the way his boyfriend sometimes flinched when Wonwoo kissed his cheek which had a fresh bruise.

"Babe, I know this probably sounds stupid... But, can't you just give them the base?" Wonwoo said one day as the couple was cuddling.

"Yup, that was pretty stupid," he said,

Wonwoo pouted, and Mingyu laughed and kissed the top of Wonwoo's head,

"Just kidding.", the taller rested his chin on the Class Pres's head, "It's because that base isn't just a building to the 10 of us." he began,

"It's the place where we all go to escape. A place that we can all go to, and feel safe and at home. It's where we grew as a band of brothers, it's where we immediately ran to with a crippled nerd, who ended up being one of our closest friends..." Mingyu's voice trailed off, and Wonwoo knew who he was talking about,

"That building is a place that all of us can return to. Maybe next year, or 10 years from now. It's like our home, and I don't think any 10 of us would give it up. Especially to the person that took Seokmin's life away."

The topic dropped after Mingyu's calm explanation, and Wonwoo was thankful that his boyfriend didn't get upset after an idiotic question.

One Friday night the boys were all at the base, including Jun and Wonwoo who had accompanied their boyfriends and were hanging out with the boys, naturally. Then, suddenly their door was being banged on, which caused all the boys to stand up. Mingyu told Wonwoo to stay seated, and as the leader, naturally came forward and began walking towards the door, the 9 other boys following behind him. As the taller drew closer the door, before he could even place a hand on the handle, the door flung open, hitting Mingyu and causing him to step back in pain.

"He-hey boys! If you're not going to give it to us... Looks like we'll have to take it." Sungwon announced, as he waited in the doorway.

What the scene was at this very moment was 2 groups of boys, their leader at it's head, face to face. Mingyu stood firm, knowing his 9 brothers were behind him, and Sungwon stood just as proudly, knowing that there were many, weak but many, boys behind him that were itching to fight.

What broke out that night was one of the most intense fights that 'The Kings' have fought, ever since the fight involving Seokmin occured. A huge mess of just fists being thrown, and boys being tossed and kicked and beat was what was occuring in that abandoned building. Mingyu was ultimately dealing with Sungwon, but once he knocked him on the ground, he moved on to help the others deal with several of Sungwon's boys. However, Mingyu had received a couple of punches too, and his vision was beginning to blur, and he touched his forehead and brought down his hand to see the tips of his fingers covered in blood. As the fight raged on, Wonwoo cowered at the back, hoping no one would see him, and had an inner battle of whether or not he should call the cops, or call for help, or just sit and wait. He watched in horror as he saw the side of 'The Kings' that made people fear them, and he never would've thought that Mingyu's eyes could look so lifeless and merciless. He never thought that Jihoon, despite being the shortest could knock out boys twice his size and not even flinch. It was terrifying seeing this completely new side to boys he thought he knew. But was even more terrifying, was the sight of a boy on the ground that slowly got up, and spotted him.

Wonwoo gasped slightly, and cowered into the corner, just praying that he wasn't seen.

But luck wasn't in his favor.

Sungwon started making his way to Wonwoo, and Mingyu saw this. He desperately clawed his way through boys, punching them mercilessly in an attempt to get to his boyfriend. The day that Seokmin died flashed into Mingyu's mind as he ran towards Wonwoo, and he prayed to God that this time he wouldn't lose someone. The last thing Wonwoo saw before his mind and vision going completely black was Sungwon walking towards him with a sly smirk on his face, and his hands outstretched reaching for Wonwoo.

The next morning, Wonwoo awoke to the blinding white of the room he was in. He opened his eyes slowly, as he tried to regain memory of the events from the night before. He tried getting up, and felt a sharp pain in his arm. He looked down and realized that there was now a cast incasing his left arm, and he suddenly became thankful that he was right-handed. As he looked at the cast, Wonwoo remembered what had happened last night. The ambush at the base, and the huge fight and he vividly remember Sungwon walking towards him, and cringed as he relived the horror right before he passed out. Wonwoo then looked to the right of his hospital room, and in one of the waiting chairs was his mom, fast asleep using the chair's armrest as an uncomfortable pillow. The Class President slowly got out of bed, and noticed his clothes folded on the nightstand beside his bed, and walked towards his mom.

"Mom," he shook Narin gently and she woke up, slowly opening her eyes and adjusting to the light. Narin shot up from her chair, and immediately embraced Wonwoo,

"Sweetie! Thank God you're awake, I was so worried!" she said, and Wonwoo hugged her back,

"Mom, do you know where Mingyu is?" Wonwoo said, still thinking of the events last night,

"Honey, are you okay?"

"Mom, Mingyu"

"Oh, yes, yes, sorry... He's the one that carried you here, or so I heard. When I got the call from him, he said you were at this room, and that he had to deal with something else." Narin explained, as she finally released Wonwoo from the embrace.

"Is he here, like, at the hospital?" Wonwoo asked, seriously concerned if his boyfriend was alright.

He knew what he went through with Seokmin, and the fact that he had to carry Wonwoo to the same hospital probably brought back some horrible memories, so Wonwoo was concerned about Mingyu, both physically and emotionally.

"I don't know, Sweetie. But, he didn't look to bad when I saw him, just a couple of cuts and bruises. He could still be around here, for all I know, he left while I was asleep"

Wonwoo then began changing into his normal clothes, and was going to search for Mingyu, ofcourse after getting the doctor's permission, and promising that he'd come back.

"Wonwoo!", Narin yelled as Wonwoo made his way out the door, stopping to listen to what his mom had to say next,

"What were you doing at the building where this took place?" Narin asked, just as any mother would,

"I'll tell you later!" Wonwoo said as he hurriedly went to go find Mingyu.

Sure enough, Mingyu was still pretty close, and was sitting at a park about 15 minutes away from the hospital. He was sitting on the swing, his back facing Wonwoo, so Wonwoo ran up behind him and wrapped his arms around his neck. Mingyu immediately stood up and turned around, and his surprised eyes softened as he realized that it was just his boyfriend. The taller immediately hugged Wonwoo, tightly and the Class President struggled for air, as his boyfriend hugged him and said,

"Thank God you're okay."

They released each other and Mingyu took Wonwoo's face in his hands. Wonwoo placed his good, right hand and placed it on top of Mingyu's, and showed him a smile,

"I'm fine."

The couple shared an intimate kiss, and it felt like they were the only two in the world in that very moment. After they separated their faces, Mingyu looked at Wonwoo's bruised face, and the cast on his arm, and his eyebrows began to droop in sadness. He was reminded of Seokmin, and he bit his bottom lip, then pulled Wonwoo into another hug,

"I'm sorry." Mingyu said, but Wonwoo was unsure of why he was apologizing.

The next week at school would be somewhat hard for Wonwoo. For some reason, after that weekend, Mingyu had slightly desitanced himself from Wonwoo. They talked, but it was always Wonwoo initiating their conversation. Mingyu didn't smile or laugh as much during lunch, and would also tell Wonwoo that it was nothing if he ever asked what was wrong.

"Don't worry, he's probably still upset about the fight. He'll get over it by the end of the week," Minghao told Wonwoo, as he too noticed Mingyu's odd actions.

Friday hit and Wonwoo was pleasantly surprised when he saw Mingyu waiting at the school gates. They hadn't walked home together the whole week, and Wonwoo was happy that Mingyu finally initiated their interaction,

Guess Minghao was right,

Wonwoo thought as he happily made his way to his boyfriend.

"Wonwoo-ah, I'll walk you home!" Mingyu called out as the Class Pres drew closer. Wonwoo skipped, with a cute smile on his face and went to his boyfriend's side. They didn't hold hands, considering Wonwoo's cast, and for some reason, Mingyu kept his hands in his pockets the entire walk home. Wonwoo brushed it off and asumed that he just didn't want to expose his hands that were probably beat up from Friday's rumble. They walked home, talking as they usually did which put Wonwoo's restless heart at ease. They got to Wonwoo's house, the route familiar to both of them, and now Mingyu was standing on the path that led to the driveway, while Wonwoo was standing on his porch, and this way, they were kind of the same height.

Wonwoo was about to lean in for a kiss, but before he could, before he could even say anything, like invite Mingyu over, or thank him for walking him, Mingyu spoke first,

"Wonwoo-ah," the deep familiar voice said, and Wonwoo listened intently.

"Let's break up."

Chapter 36: Hai Zen! I spent a few days to finish this story. And I realllyyyyy love this!!! How the story goes sweetly, then comes the problem that makes me a little scared when Mingyu fights. I like the portrayal of Wonwoo's character. It doesn't feel forced, just flows naturally. And I'm reading this in 2022 which made it easy for me to match their young and current images. Lastly, thank you for presenting a beautiful story!!
And, I was wondering where is Seungkwan? I didn't find him in every chapter. Just curious.
