"nah, never," boyeon answers with a triumphant shake of her noggin. the dance instructor made it a point to single-out boyeon once again all because she forgot a frickin' hair-tie; since when did long hair ever affect a person's ability to move their hips? as practice concluded, boyeon was the first in and out of the shower so she could focus on applying a five step home-made concoction to rid herself of this aggravating hormonal acne (it's that time of month). she drags the product across the small bridge of her tiny, cute nose, under her doe-like eyes and above a set of plump lips. she focuses on patting the remainder of the product into the roundness of her cheeks and carefully avoids the area of sparse eyebrow hairs. "i hope umma's special serum works again." boyeon murmurs as she removes the obnoxious hair-tie, releasing her tangled tresses that are in dire need of deep conditioning, "don't fail me now."

STYLE : plopping it on the closed toilet top, boyeon starts rummaging through her duffle bag, pulling out a few options for the company lunch sprung on the girls last minute. she sets aside a pair of boyfriend jeans (her go-to, "staple" piece), comfortable jeggings in a light denim wash, a simple white t-shirt--and a cream-off-white one in the same style--white converse sneakers, bohemian platform sandals and dainty necklaces in silver and gold. she spreads the garments and jewelry across the counter, trying her best to make an executive decision as the clock ticked on. "boyeon, the manager is almost here!" she hears one of the girls call out to her, "are you almost done in there?" the door-knob jiggles which causes boyeon to reach out for the crisp white t-shirt and jeans, "no, i mean--yes, just one minute!" she yells as she yanks on her every-day choice.

PERSONALITY : 

shin boyeon stands at the entrance of the glass doors, the memories flooding in as she cranes her neck upwards towards the large, bright sign. she's back but is this really what she acutally wants? "dm entertainment", the sound of it left a bitter taste in but not more than the woman who pushed opened the doors to bring her in. "i see you've made it," she greets but it lacks warmth, just like her speech always had whenever she spoke to the younger woman. "thanks for doing me this favor," she concludes, almost like it pains her to be grateful. after all, boyeon is her saving grace. 

"it's no problem. i'll do what i can to help," boyeon replies, no longer the totally gullibe eighteen year old with no sense of direction. "i was always just a phone-call away, anyhow. you can count on me." which is true because even after departing from dm, boyeon moved back home with her parents (a few blocks away) as she took on a few part-time jobs in the meantime. minah gave her a tour of her old stomping grounds as boyeon took note of the many upgrades, probably completed with the profit made off of dm's only boy group. tears pricked at her eyes as she remembered the overwhelming displeasure of being in minah's company, let alone, following her around the corridors of this old place. 

why did her emotions have to surface at this very moment? was she setting herself up for failure by trusting this opportunity?

"the girls i've picked all bring something different to the table," minah starts as they round a corner. "i was missing a main vocalist but now i have you."

"whatever happened to yoo jia?" boyeon inquires as the latter shuffles her into a conference room, "i figured you'd ask her before me since she was your ideal idol." 

minah freezes but only for a moment as she gestures for boyeon to take a seat and saves face. "yoo jia left in 2016 and so did your old friend, yura."

"i'm well aware of yura's depature," boyeon adds while ms. jung studies the woman before her.

she really wants to feel bad for minah but every fiber in her body is singed with fury and hurt instead. she juts her chin out, wanting minah to take notice of the mature boyeon—the teenager who wore her heart on her sleeves, no longer present—this boyeon meant business. 

"i want to debut...i went on produce 101 to prove a point and i didn't rank as high as i did because of my looks alone." boyeon starts just as a faint smirk touches minah's lips. "i know i'm not your 'number one' choice for an idol but i think with the little traction i gained from the show, some people could recognize me. i'm determined to be an idol; it's been my dream for such a long time so i'm willing to help...because if it wasn't for you, i'm sure i could have already debuted long before if only i believed in myself."

❝ what makes me ready now?❞

shin boyeon was born into an extremely large family of eight where the word "alone" was never known or truly experienced.

being the youngest and only girl, boyeon was constantly doted on by her parents and entourage of five protective, older brothers. she was conditioned from birth to never be selfish and always express her emotions whenever anything bothered her because in a large family like the "shin clan", one will always notice something admist.

since toddler-hood, boyeon has always been interested in music as a result of her mother's extensive collection of vinyl records that she constantly played for her family of busy-body kids. whereas her father on the other hand, enjoyed beautiful, heart-wrenching ballads that left an empathetic child like boyeon, sad but touched. music would remain to be a steady factor in the shin household all throughout the decades which eventually shaped boyeon's vision of her very own musical future. when the nice ahjummas and curious ahjussis would inquire about boyeon's grown-up aspirations, she would full-heartedly tell them, "i want to be a singer," followed by a sweet simper. they would comment on how pretty young boyeon is and wish her "luck" before carrying on with their day. boyeon's parents were never against the idea of their daughter becoming a singer but had no idea on how to enable it until a co-worker of her father's offered personal singing classes. 

mr. seo was an uptight teacher but orderly and seemingly well aware of music which never led anyone to question his abilities or knowledge. boyeon would take off for practice on saturdays at mr. seo's and return with a grin on her face, ready to show off what she learned with her teacher that day.

simply, he built and secured the foundation of boyeon's career as a singer, today.

as the years carried on, mr. seo would leave seoul to reside in the country side with his daughter after a decline in health and at the suggestion of clueless classmate, boyeon would begin vocal lessons with another. mr. lim was far more lenient, easy-going and careless even. boyeon did not learn much from this new teacher with his relaxed attitude and requested that the money she paid out for the mediocre lessons be returned to her. 

at fifteen, boyeon debated on joining the choir at her school before ultimately going for it at the request of her best friend, jooyi. jooyi begged boyeon for weeks on end after many of the previous members in their class dropped out just before the spring showcase and boyeon—being the kind of person she is—stepped up to the plate. joining seolhwa's young women's choir gave boyeon a sense of belonging, a sense of a path she was meant to travel amongst and succeed. she found herself enjoying music again since mr. lim was removed from her life and discovered herself subconsciously humming or singing a lot of the time without really realizing it. her family and especially older brother, bogeom commented on the incredible difference in her personality since joining, reminding her that music really is a cure.

in her second year of high school, boyeon was at her locker, packing away her books when her best friend jooyi and pal hyojeong ran up to her with a flyer in their grasp. "you should audition, boyeonie," hyojeong excitedly exclaimed as she shook the flyer in her hand. "it's not far from your house! can you imagine if you made it?" jooyi added with just as much excitement, "if you become an idol, we can see all our oppas! and then we can say we know someone famous!" waving off her friends' excitement, boyeon took the flyer from the two before stashing it away into her back-pack and changing the subject. later that evening while jotting down notes for language class, her brother bohyung reached down to pick up the balled up flyer from beside the trash-bin. "you should audition," he began as he smoothed out the lamented paper, eyeing it over, "it's your dream to beomce a singer. how would you know if you don't at least try?"

TRAINING YEARS : 
three years (march 2014-2015) @ dm entertainment.
in 2016, boyeon took a chance; she auditioned and particpated on produce 101 season 1 as an "individual trainee" and ranked 19 in the final episode.
two months (december 2018-2019) @ dm entertainment, again.

TRAINING : 

in march of 2014, exactly one month after boyeon's seventeenth birthday, she decided to take a chance and audition for dm entertainment. her school-mates, jooyi, hyojeong and brother bohyung had suggested that she give it a go especially with dm's building being so close by, if boyeon did make it, she wouldn't have to travel far. and so, without surprise, boyeon is instantly casted and the following week, boyeon starts training. at first, it was all excitement and constant butterflies in the pits of boyeon's stomach as she was often complimented for her vocal ability and decent range. sure, she wasn't the next kim taeyeon of girls' generation but "you could be with the right amount of practice," minah would mention time and time again, without fail.

as the months proceeded, boyeon was consistently challenged with dancing. she lacked rhythm and could hardly body-wave without looking awkward, let alone two-step and everyone knew it. even poor yura dedicated one on one time with boyeon in order to help her improve but it was futile in the end. no matter how many hours boyeon would spend on a simple routine, seemingly nailing it down, she always messed up a step when it came to executing the final product. minah definitely took notice of this and never failed to comment on boyeon's lack of improvement. it isn't until 2015 when the anticipated girl group project is finalizing that yoo jia is chosen as a "main vocal" instead of boyeon. "you're not cut out to be an idol, boyeon," minah states in that matter of fact tone she always used on the younger woman, "your vocals have slightly improved but to be an idol, it takes more than a nice voice and you lack that factor. perhaps you should try to improve your stage presence and then we'll consider you for a future girl-group, okay?"

no. it wasn't okay. it never was okay.

the following month, shin boyeon withdrew from dm entertainment with a hefty remaining balance of training costs attached to her identity. she knew the consequences of leaving but she could not bare to face the one woman who made her feel hopeless and dejected. so instead, boyeon applied for jobs and paid off her costs responsibly, not allowing her parents to foot the expenses that she choice to obtain.

and a year later in 2016, boyeon found herself applying to a new survival show because she wanted to prove to herself that once and for all, she could be an idol.

SCANDALS :

       is mode's boyeon jealous of aera's beauty?      
so, during an interview, one of the female hosts asks boyeon who she thinks is the prettiest in mode in which she openly admits that she thinks everyone is beautiful within the group. the other host—not satisfied with the answer—pesters her to answer it more "realistically". boyeon then replies, "sometimes in the morning when the maknae wakes up, she doesn't look like herself." the hosts chortle but asks her to elaborate, "let's just say the visual isn't all that visually in the morning."

hwan sukim grew up in a very loving, supportive household on the outskirts of seoul, south korea. being an only child, young sukim often envied others with siblings and mentions this quite often in interviews. despite his parents lack of producing another child, sukim would get over wanting a sister or brother and gain friendships instead. naturally, people gravitated towards him, wanting to show off or express their interest in getting to know him "better". "what for?" he would ask, startling some, confusing others but he complied. he would make time for them where the same would never been done for him. sukim made people look good but after gaining whatever popularity they sought after, the lot of them would toss him aside like a crumpled up napkin.

you're a cursed blessing, sukim thinks to himself as he rinses the self-made shampoo from his hair. he knows he's attractive—all those around him reminds him of his "shockingly beautiful" features, daily—but it doesn't lessen the burden. where sukim sees a cursed face and fate, dm entertainment sees a profitable opportunity and makes their trainee the visual of their boy group instead.

BACK STORY: hwan sukim was scouted by dm entertainment in the summer of 2013 while shopping with his mother (who he is the splitting image of, mind you). after discussing it over with his parents who encouraged him to audition, sukim was accepted and every-day, after school took the bus routes from across town to dm to train. 

in the spring of 2014, sukim notices that dm is holding auditions again and tries to convince his friend, kwangho to audition. "you know i'm not the only one from our school here, right?" kwangho whispers to sukim who only looks confused. "your company printed tons of flyers and some of the girls at seolhwa got ahold of copies; just don't be shocked if you see someone from there, prancing around." when it is kwangho's turn, sukim hangs back in the corridor as moral support while observing the others waiting their turn. some look nervous, others feign confidence but one in particular—who was doning the legendary seolhwa uniform of true blue and stark white—stands at the very back of the line with wide, frantic eyes as she too, observes the crowd. 

sukim isn't able to recall her name as the two never spoke to one another but he very clearly remembers that she is a year above him.

turning around, he makes a bee-line for the older girl and swiftly, the crowd of people part for him until he is right in front of the anxious student. "you look super nervous," sukim speaks low enough for only the two of them to hear, "first time?"

she nods before asking, "how can you tell?"

"ah, just an inkling. i'm nervous as well although i don't look like it," it wasn't a total lie. kwangho really did make him feel nervous; he wanted him to make it so the two of them can debut together! the younger guy chuckles softly before holding out his hand, "i'm hwan sukim and you are?"

"hello, hwan sukim. i'm shin boyeon. good luck to you, sukim-ssi"

LOVE STORY :  for the longest time after boyeon was accepted into dm entertainment, sukim made sure to avoid the vocal practice rooms unless it was absolutely necessary to attend. he made false claims about wanting to improve his dance skills and upper mamagement agreed and approved of his decision with the end goal of making sukim a "more rounded" future idol. no one knew the true nature of sukim's decision to advance his dance skills, not even kwangho. 

since finding out that both kwangho and boyeon made it, it left sukim excited but then all the more worried that boyeon would find out that he sort-of, kind-of lied about not already being a trainee. for some reason, it mattered to him if boyeon thought of him as a liar—her opinion matters a lot and much more than a stranger's should—and he didn't want that so he chose to avoid instead. of course, kwangho was suspicious of sukim's sudden interest in dance but helped anyway.

it isn't until the company decides to splurge on pizza for the trainees after weeks of non-stop training that sukim is face to face with shin boyeon herself as she places a slice of pizza on his plate.

"you've been hiding," boyeon teases while sukim simply gapes. "trainee since 2013, eh? kwangho told me. thanks for making me feel better that day, by the way. if it wasn't for you, i'd probably peed myself."

after that encounter in the canteen, sukim starts coming around more and returning to vocal lessons, crossing paths with boyeon much more frequently. the two would exchange greetings which slowly turned into short conversations and then into full blown out banters. kwangho would sometimes be apart of the antics, other times yura would join in but it all stops adruptly in 2015 when sukim seeks out boyeon.

"is boyeon not coming again today?" sukim inquires as yura gathers her hair into a pony-tail. "it's just unlike her to miss so many practices."

"she left, sukim." yura answers with a sullen expression, "minah dismissed her; she wasn't improving but that doesn't make sense."

one can only imagine just how shocked sukim is when he finds out that boyeon returned...

this sub-unit contains the three pilars of mode, unique but stunning visuals, subtle charisma and smooth execution. they're pretty, talented and ready to show a different "mode". yamada miho, the foreign beauty, kim somyeong, leader and visual goddess seo area make up sucré mode with "wave".
