Personality.

Cheerful and optimistic : Yumi is someone who seemingly does not let anything get her down and is always laughing and smiling. When interacting with others, she'll try her best to remain enthusiastic. She always tries to look for the silver lining in any cloud and if she can't find it, she'll keep trying. She tries to keep a positive outlook on life because she believes there are so many ways things could go right, or things that don't go well can end up being in her favour. And even if things don't go the way she planned, she believes it would be better if she didn't get what she wanted.

Trying to be friendly even though she is shy : Even though Yumi finds it intimidating to interact with people she does not know, if she is spoken to first, she will usually enthusiastically join in whatever the other person is talking about.

Cowardly and timid : Yumi does not like making her loved ones angry or getting into conflicts, so she often keeps her true opinions and feelings to herself. If she accidentally expressed an opinion others do not agree with, she will just agree to disagree for fear of ruining her relationship with the person / people. She is easily scared by people who are angry and fierce.

Needy and validation-seeking : Growing up being unable to make friends easily, Yumi often felt there are few people who love her, and it didn't stop when she became an idol. If people don't praise her, she feels that she had not done well or is unloved. She often says things like "oh dear, I didn't do so well this time" hoping others will assure her she did her best. She tries her best to help others or stay on their good side, because she wants people to like her.

Naive : Because she has not experienced many setbacks, Yumi tends to believe she can do anything if she believes in herself and works hard. She hasn't learnt that wanting something alone doesn't necessarily mean you will get it, and hard work is not a sure way to success. (People like Miyeon might teach her this)

Zealous : Yumi believes that if you truly love something, you should put as much effort as you can into it, and going with this, she puts all her effort into performing, making sure she gets everything perfect and has memorised it by heart before she goes for evaluations.

Kind and selfless : Yumi tries to avoid hurting others, instead uplifting them wherever possible. She never fails to give her loved ones or people she finds cool words of encouragement when needed, even if she can't say much. She tries her best to show genuine love to everyone around her, even sacrificing herself to make them happy.

Humble : Yumi isn't one to overestimate her abilities or brag about herself, rather, underestimating herself instead.

Background.

Yumi was born in 2002 to a housewife and volleyball coach and one older sister, Mina. During her childhood, Yumi was doted on a lot by Mina and spent a lot of time bonding with her older sister. When Mina started playing volleyball at the age of 12 due to going to the middle school where her father was the team coach, Yumi too was inspired to be a volleyballer, and eventually took up volleyball as an extracurricular activity when she herself entered middle school. However, just one year later, Mina accidentally found a video titled "Aqours first PV" on NicoNico, and of course she shared it with her younger sister. Both girls were instantly captured by the cute anime girls, the upbeat melody and the cheerful lyrics. They later decided to learn the dance together for fun, and cosplay the characters.

Partly thanks to Mina, Yumi later discovered several other idol groups, not only Japanese but Korean. Throughout Yumi's early teenage years, she continued playing volleyball as well as exploring idol stuff with her elder sister. When Yumi was 15 years old, Mina decided to take a gap year from her studies and audition for the first season of International Idol, and later became one of the fourteen finalists, later debuting in a group called U/Idol. This made Yumi want to perform on stage like her sister, and she told her parents she wanted to audition for Unite Media too. Mr and Mrs Tanaka decided to let their younger daughter pursue an idol career just like their elder daughter, and continue her high school education in Korea while training. In 2018, Yumi was chosen to participate on the second season of International Idol.

On International Idol, Mina never fails to give Yumi much needed love and words of encouragement.

Fellow Contestant / Yao Lihan / 16 / Trainee / ISTP / Yumi and Lihan didn't know each other well until International Idol started due to their language barrier, Lihan being reserved and Yumi being shy. Luckily, since Rachel understands both Japanese and Mandarin, she was able to play translator for them, and it helped them get closer.

Fellow Contestant / Aurora Myung / 23 / Trainee / ISTJ / Yumi and Aurora don't talk much, and Yumi is too intimidated to approach Aurora because of the older girl's icy goddess looks and fierce nature. That, and the fact she has a crush on Nova scares her away from Aurora.

Fellow Contestant / Park Miyeon / 18 / Trainee / irritable and cold-hearted though she has a caring side she seldom shows / When International Idol started / Miyeon and Yumi started training together, the older girl intimidated the hell out of Yumi with her fierceness and strictness. However, as the show went on, Miyeon started to show her soft side to Yumi more, and the younger girl started looking up to her as an older sister figure.

Trainee Life.
Becoming a trainee was kind of a culture shock for Yumi, who was so used to the Japanese idol model in which idols start imperfect but later become perfect, whereas in Korea you trained until you were perfect before debuting. Also, K-pop choreographies were much harder than J-pop choreographies, which was another thing Yumi struggled with. As if that wasn't bad enough, the language barrier made it hard for Yumi to confide in or find comfort in other trainees. But there was one thing that kept Yumi going - her sister. Despite the sisters not being able to meet due to conflicting schedules, Mina made sure to send Yumi good morning texts as well as some words of encouragement, as well as check up on how her day was, every single day. This inspired Yumi to work harder so that she could stand on the same stage as Mina one day. And now that Yumi has been chosen to participate on International Idol, it looks like that day is coming sooner than she thinks.

Hello! Could you please introduce yourself?

Hello everyone! I'm Tanaka Yumi and I'm 16 this year. I'm 148cm short but I'm definitely big in terms of passion for performing and cuteness!

Why did you decide to audition for International Idol?

Because of my big sister! She was a winner of the first season of International Idol and now she's a famous idol! I want to share the stage with my sister one day!

What was your audition song?

I auditioned with Everyday I Love You, a song by Loona's Vivi! Isn't it cute and has such sweet lyrics? (Note : just imagine she sang both the vocal and rap parts)

What do you believe sets you apart from the other contestants?

I'm cute!

What skill or skills are you most confident in?

I'm good at dancing and have natural cuteness!

If given the chance, what skill would you like to show off and if that skill wasn't available for whatever reason, what other skill would you pick?

I would like to show off my cuteness! And also my dancing. If I can't show it off, maybe... uhh... my anime character impersonations!

What concepts do you prefer and what ones don't you like?

I like cute concepts! I don't really like y concepts though... it must be so embarassing to be wearing so little and showing your bottom to the camera...

If you were in a group with a concept you didn't like and were given the chance to switch to one with a concept that suits you better, would you switch or stay with your group?

I think I would switch, I'm not really a confident person...

What amount of members do you think the winning group should have?

Uhh... 9! All the best groups have 9 members! Like SNSD, Twice and Aqours!

If you won, how do you think you would react?

I will be very happy! It's always been my dream to share the stage with my sister.

And on the other side of that, if you lost, how do you think you would react?

I would definitely be sad, because I can't stand on the same stage as my sister... but, I will work harder because I believe the day will come when I do!
