APPEARANCE hyunwook has a generally sharp appearance with delicate features, characterised by his high cheekbones, sharp jawline and more often than not, narrowed eyes. his natural hair colour is a brownish-black, though the stylists insisted on dying it a darker black to make it look more,,,natural??
he's quite slender as well, with a slightness and grace that isn't often found in boys, which is a result from his dance training. he carries imself with dignity and makes a point of straightening his back whenever he walks or sits, which often makes him seem taller than he really is (178cm). hyunwook is also blessed with fast metabolism so he's constantly skinny (60kg), with clothes often hanging off his frame.
hyunwook has long limbs, ending with slender fingers that are perfect for playing the piano (which he loathes, but still can). he uses them to his advantage, since it makes his dancing more graceful.
FASHION STYLE because of his slender stature, hyunwook has no trouble finding clothes that fit him. on normal/promotion days, he makes a point of dressing for style because screw comfort - he can have that in the confines of his own room and the practice rooms.
on normal days, he wears a loose-fitting or oversized shirt paired with slim fitting pants or slacks that cling to his long legs - which he's enormously proud of. he finishes those with combat boots and a bomber/leather jacket, though if he's attending a more formal event he replaces those with loafers.

accessories/tattoos hyunwook's title as 'fashionista' is really apparent through the large collection of accessories he possesses. one of his signature looks is wearing something with a cross - achoker with a cross, a bracelet with a cross, someone once joked he had the whole goddamn cathedral in his accessory drawer because yeah. another signature of his is chains; chains on his earrings, chains from his belt, you get the idea.
he's never seen without at least two necklaces - a simple silver one with a simple charm, paired with either a choker or just one that's closer to his neck. he wears rings as well, at least two on one hand. earrings are also his favourite, specifically ones with chains or a hanging charm.

however, hyunwook is a very reckless and unpredictable individual. his recklessness is really more of an impulsive nature rather than taking risks needlessly, but he does tend to push social norms and boundaries whenever he could. regarding his unpredictability, this usually manifests in his moods since he suffers from mood swings. one moment he could be goofing around with s, the next he's contemplating the reason for life.

stubbornness to a fault is also one of hyunwook's characteristics. it's not that he doesn't take no for an answer; he just needs a lot of convincing. because of his confidence which can border on arrogance, hyunwook has much confidence in his decisions and ideas. this often means that he doesn't see the need to change his ideas, and coupled with his rebellious nature, hyunwook would practically straight up do anything you told him not to do (only when he feels like it. the only person who can control him is really the leader and dongsaengs). this stubbornness is also more apparent when it comes to his skills and creativity. you tell him you can't do acrobatics on stage? fine, he'll prove you wrong. however, if you lay stuff out to him in a logical manner, he'll listen, since he's a reasonable person. just don't be hadstrong against his stubbornness, because it'll backfire completely.

hyunwook is very blunt. he doesn't really have much of a brain to mouth filter. of course he sugarcoats his words when the situation calls for it, and he's very polite to strangers and his superiors, but to people he's close with his bluntness can be a bit of a problem when people go to him for advice, mostly because he doesn't believe in sugarcoating the truth. he'll try his best if needed, but generally don't expect it from him. otherwise, when people goes to him for advice, he settles for a hug because hey, physical intimacy always helps, right?

hyunwook also has quite a short temper and is irritable, especiaally when he's impatient. hyunwook is a man of action, not of waiting - he finds it difficult to sit around doing nothing when there are clearly something better to be done. he gets annoyed easily, though it doesn't always show. hyunwook rarely actually gets angry though, most of his annoyance is either for show or just because he's petty. when he gets pissed/mildly annoyed (for real), he makes it known through passive-aggressiveness, and makes a point of being more dramatic than usual, which makes him a good target for annoying. but when he's truly angry and well pissed, he becomes quiet and very, very intimidating.

BACKGROUND
(1998) hyunwook was born in seoul to his father and his mother at 3am. he was quite a weak and small child when he was born, and people around his parents thought it was a bad omen, but his parents loved him anyways.
(2001 - 2009) his childhood was relatively normal, with the exception of occasional trips to the states to visit his extended family. his cousins loved playing with him, and taught him english. hyunwook also excelled at studying, and his parents fully expected him to pursue an academic path. however, his mom also enrolled him in typical asian classes like piano and for some reason, ballet. hyunwook hated dancing at first, but he somehow had a talent for it, and after his teacher praised his dancing, his mother continued enrolling him in modern and traditional dance classes (like wtf mom??).
(2010) first year of secondary/middle school and the kpop hype started kicking off. hyunwook didn't really pay much attention to it because he was busy dealing with his issues. he had always been quite sick as a child, but it seemed to have gotten worse despite his dancing. anyways, in middle school his quiet demeanor made it difficult to make friends, and his social life worsened with him being bullied at school. his older brother fought them off, but it only made them more eager to come back.
(2010 - 2011) because of hallyu wave hype, hyunwook couldn't really escape the songs and stuff, so he started listening to some of the songs. though his situation in middle school were still quite bad, he did make friends at his dance academy, and they urged him to get into kpop, which caused him to start listening to groups such as shinee and bigbang.
(2011 - 2013) hyunwook started to fall deeper into the kpop hole and realised that his dance background helped a lot in covering his songs' dances. though he was attending a relatively expensive academy, there were a group of male students who were also interested in kpop and they formed sort of an informal group who would practice dances and learn songs. throughout his middle school years, hyunwook constantly participated in school festival performances.
(2014 - 2016) eventually his parents realised that hyunwook's grades were slipping. annoyed, they lectured him on it, but he didn't give up. they decided that the only way to deal with his 'rebellious' streak was to send him to a school abroad. so he studied abroad in a uk boarding school (yeah his family is kinda rich) for high school/sixth form. since the hallyu wave also picked up during these years, hyunwook was extremely popular since he was korean and cute.
(2016) his parents thought the two years in uk did him good and he would stop thinking of entering the entertainment industry and other 'similar' nonsense. his mother had initially promised him that he could do whatever he want after he graduated from university, but hyunwook is an impatient boi and doesn't want to wait. he also knew that the older he gets, the less 'desirable' he would be, so he struck another deal with his parents; once he gets into a prestigious university, they would leave him alone. they reluctantly agreed and made good on their promise when hyunwook entered the seoul national university (beating out his older brother, who attended hanyang) in its music department.
(2016 - 2017) hyunwook started training in jyp while juggling school. he trained alongside stray kids members and was initially considered for the survival show, but was eliminated in episode 3 and wasn't brought back, mainly because he was still inexperienced.
(2017 - 2019) realising that he was still a bit hasty and had dived into the thick of things headfirst, hyunwook was humbled and decided to continue training in jyp, just to hone his skills a little more.
(2019) hyunwook's on his third year of university, which is when people usually start to take their studies and life more seriously. he realised that, despite how talented he may be, jyp wouldn't be debuting a boy group anytime soon after stray kids' debut. he was initially considering leaving the company and then graduating, before considering his other options, when he recieved a casting from star ent. when he was performing in uni. and so he went to star.

— trends :: hyunwook hates it when he has to follow a set trend because he sets his own, thank you very much.
— waking up early :: who thought becoming a trainee was a good idea again? yeah he didn't foresee the problem of needing to wake up early and haul his to the practice rooms. he usually makes up for it by practicing late into the night, but eventually chan dragged him away and told him off, so he grudgingly goes back to the dorms at a reasonable time. doesn't stop his alarm from being literally the loudest and most annoying one in the dorm though.

— his alarm is district 9 by skz. then he changed it to god's menu by skz. s hate these songs with a passion, because it's often them who had to switch it off. the worst thing about hyunwook's alarms is that he sets like 10 five mins apart so it's a never-ending barrage of 3racha's beat drops. it helps wake the other members up though, which is a plus. his leader made him change it to a milder tone. hyunwook compromised, so now it's bird chirps instead.

— he's a clean freak but is also kinda lazy so he just leaves his stuff as it is. he does clean his personal space like once a week though, so it still looks decent.

TRAINEE LIFE hyunwook first started at jyp ent. as a trainee, having an extensive dance background and history of covering songs but not really having expertise at other things. it was almost immediately decided off the bat that he was a dancer, because that's what he excelled at. but he wanted to do more. he wanted to sing, he wanted to rap, and so, using his dancing skills to let him whizz right through weekly evaluations he started honing his other skills.
his relationship with the other trainees were meh. it wasn't bad, but it wasn't exactly 100% happy-go-lucky either. for one, hyunwook was an introvert. for another, he had a brother who was already well-known in the industry, which means he had expectations to live up to. hyunwook supposed he was lucky that the jyp trainees weren't as vicious and cut-throat as the other agencies' might have been, but of course, there were still some jealous people and annoying people who gave him a lot of for it.
nonetheless, there were trainees who were friendly and whom he became friends with. especially since jyp has more international trainees than others, meaning that his english and japnese helps him make friends more easily.
very qiuckly he caught the attention of jyp and other senior idols, but more importantly bang chan. chan decided to choose hyunwook to be in his team because he thought he'd be an asset.
however, after being eliminated from the skz show, hyunwook's life came crashing around him and he became really bitter. he remained in jyp, though that's because he needed time to think his life through and he decided that it would be better to have some stability in his life. at the beginning of 2019, he realised that he was going nowhere because of skz's debut and itzy's recent debut. he speculated that it would probably be another four years that he would get a chance, and honestly he didn't want to wait. plus his age was still an asset to him at the time so he decided to go somewhere else.
it was during that time when he was scouted and casted by star ent. when one of the representatives saw him performing in uni. so he decided to end his contract with jyp and go to star ent.
at star ent., hyunwook's position was different. because he appeared on skz's reality show, he was kind of well-known. not necessarily a celebrity trainee on the same level as previous pd101 trainees, but he was definitely out there. so there were a lot of gazes on him, and a lot of rumours on him. nonetheless, he remembered that being friendly always pays off, so he does that. especially when he was on the older side, so he tries to get along with everyone.
basically at star ent. he was honing himself for debut. hyunwook doesn't want to get his hopes high, but he knows he would be an asset to the company, so he throws himself harder than ever into training.
and of course, there was when he met his future bandmates.

Performance/trainee trvia
— hyunwook's routine for making choreographies is basically this :: he gets the completed song from the producers, and puts it in his playlist. then he listens to it nonstop for as long as he needs, before he goes to the dance practice room. after that, he jams to the song for about ten to twenty minutes just to get the feel of the song. then he gets into serious choreographing, which can take anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours. hyunwook gets the basic structure of the dance down in that timespan, then starts working out the details. after that, he looks at the lyrics and works out the details to complete the dance. he does the centre parts first, then goes to sleep thinking through the support roles. then he gets his co-choreographer to the studio the next day and sees what he comes up with, before they start working out the details
— the role of his co-choreographer depends on how confident he is with his own abilities (i'm not sure about ezra because his app isn't that developed yet and anyways this is just kind of tentative so yeah). and the gnere of the song as well, i guess. if it's hip hop i think hyunwook would have ezra take a much larger role in it? but if it's a ballad or a slow song he'll do it since his background might be more suitable for it. anyways, if it's a song that either one of them specialises more in, hyunwook would have ezra show him his version of the dance after they gone their separate ways, before working out the details out together. if it's one where it's one's specialisation is more apparent, then hyunwook/ezra would just point out the details in the choreo and help refine it, rather than work it out together.
— hyunwook is a spontaneous creative. it means that he prefers to create his own choreography for other groups' songs rather than learning their choreographies. that is, until he realise that learning others' choreographies would only improve his work, so he grudgingly does it. which is also why he's the boy group dance master.
— sometimes he calls minho and shows his dance to him just to see what he thinks (even though you're not technically supposed to, but yeah. he doesn't care.)
— hyunwook spends an average of six hours in the dance studio, even if the group is on hiatus. what he does there depends on his mood - he might just practice his own choreographies or learn other groups' choreo if he's not really in a creative mood, or he might work on new dances for the whole six hours
— if their producers haven't finished the song and they're on a tight schedule, hyunwook would ask them for the backtrack/beat guide just so he can match moves to it and get a general feel of the song
— i feel like hyunwook would probably be asked to show off his choreo skills on variety shows, and how quickly he can choreograph something, so that'll be a good scene idea :d but if he's asked that, he'll probably listen to the song twice then just dance
— hyunwook gets annoyed when people just say he can only dance, like hello, he takes up three positions in the team
— he struggles with hip hop initially because the moves you need to do in hip hop and traditional are so different - especially when he does extra moves in the hip hop dance moves (like how lovelyz's mijoo does it) but he soon adjusts
— because of his traditional background he's able to work out graceful moves that also suit the girls. and since we're entering a progressive age, renegade-b/renegade is constantly praised for having gender neutral dance moves/not afraid to explore a more feminine style of dance
— despite what he says, hyunwook always gets nervous before going onstage. mainly because he's the main dancer and centre, but then ezra reassures him that he's also there, so he feels a bit better
— the only time he ever sweats is in dance practice
— hyunwook is the kind of person who can just keeps going until he collapses. when he dances, he doesn't really know how tired he is because he doesn't stop. only when he takes a break does he realise how tired he is, so he takes as little breaks as humanely possible. he claims over-exerting himself helps him to sleep, but that's a lie. anyways, s get worried about him because of that
— he sometimes cries in the practice rooms. he never reveals it, but he does.
— hyunwook never counts beats. he just dances according to feeling, so when he needs to teach the others he blanks out a little. luckily ezra is there and he gets the practical/technical parts of the dance down when they're working behind the scenes
— hyunwook is a perfectionist, so he spends as much time as he needs to make sure he knows his dance and doesn't up in front of the members because he's supposed to know this stuff. and this is the same for when he's onstage - because he's the main dancer, isn't he?

hyunwook was also caught up in the wave of school bullying rumours after he debuted. there were allegations of him bullying people in korea in 2015, which was hilarious because he was in the uk then. it quickly cleared up, but it tainted his reputation a little.

and then of course, because scandals and bad news come in droves, another person came up and said that he was a bully in middle school. hyunwook almost wants to laugh at how ridiculous the whole situation was because he was the one being bullied at school, but nonetheless he was still investigated. after an investigation by the entertainment agency, it was revealed that he was wrongly accused, but the investigation took so long and took athen out of renegrade for a long time.

but that relationship really developed later on, because in the beginning it wasn't like that. at first, they got to know each other because one (jisung) is the guy who freestyle raps at weekly evaluations and passes with flying colours, while the other (hyunwooK) is the guy who freestyle dances at weekly evaluations and passes with flying colours. the other jyp trainees looked on in awe and was like woah these people are crazy. when hyunwook first met jisung he, too, was blown away and asked if he could teach him how to rap and sing, in exchange for dance lessons. jisung agreed, and the two started spending more time together.
as they spend more time together hyunwook realised jisung's crackhead culture pretty much vibed with his and they became close friends. except hyunwook realised, in exchange for jisung's talent sometimes he lacked common sense (see hyunjin helping han flip a pancake in their cooking vlive, and their idiot tests etc.) so he decided to take care of him that way. so yeah, hyunwook is jisung's close friend but at the same time also kind of his mom.

(onto a calmer narrative) the reason why they're so close is because hyunwook is fluent in english and felix doesn't feel burdened to speak korean with him - of course chan is felix's go-to person since they're both aussie line, but in terms of local knowledge and language skills hyunwook is great as well. so whenever chan is busy felix relies on hyunwook.
hyunwook also felt bitter when felix was brought back and he wasn't. of course, he was happy for felix and happy for chan because he was so happy, but he felt really upset about it. he didn't show it in front of them, of course, nor did he ever mention anything, but after he debuted in renegade he told them about his feelings, and felix felt so bad about it.

as we all know, bang chan's duality is amazing. onstage, he is charismatic and fierce, and he slays every stage (especially that wolfgang stage cough cough) he stands on. yeah, he's terrible because he's just that attractive.
offstage of course, bang chan is the sweetest person ever. he has a heart of gold, and geniunely seems like he wants to help everyone. he's helpful and friendly, and wants to befriend everyone as well. furthermore, he's also gentle and takes care of people well. often called skz's dad, chan has the full-time job of taking care of all the members and yeah, again, genuinely seems to care about everyone.
he's also quite affectionate and doesn't hesitate to show it. chan loves to initiate skinship and hug everyone (though not to hyunjin's and hyunwook's extent of kissing and flirting with everyone). he's also very loyal, and if he trusts and loves you, he'd swear undying loyalty to you. however, he's actually quite shy, and despite how extroverted and social he is, chan's shy side shows through his gentle side. he's also extrmeely generous, and he seems to never run out of kindness and patience. yeah, he's literally the best person ever.
HISTORY
the two cultivated their relationship in jyp as trainees. chan is the nicest person ever, and since hyunnie was a new trainee in 2016 chan decided to introduce himself to him.
the two didn't exactly hit it off immediately, but chan found hyunwook fascinating, and hyunwook, initially thinking his kindness was a ruse, eventually accepted him. hyunwook eventually got closer with bang chan in the beginning of 2017, and when bang chan saw hyunnie's dance skills, he decided hmm, this guy is good.
hyunwook thought that they would be able to end up in the same group, and bang chan was the first person who hyunnie was willing to give up his pride for, so he was willing to follow chan as a leader.
however, after he was eliminated in episode 3, hyunwook's dreams came crashing down. he felt really bitter about it. chan felt really sad about it and cried as much as he did with felix - it was the first time hyunwook cried on camera as well. he felt bitter about it, but busied himself with training harder than ever and taking care of felix and minho, who were also eliminated.
but of course, they were brought back and he wasn't. and so hyunwook's mood got worse, and he fell more into the deep end, blaming himself and sleeping later and later to train more. the skz members were really worried about him, but hyunwook couldn't see felix and minho because they were members of skz and he wasn't. han, seungmin and i.n. are his sons, he didn't think he could burden them with his feelings, and he wasn't close enough with changbin or hyunjin. (let's ignore woojin's existence) and of course, since he was originally the closest to chan, chan was the one he went to and they spent a lot of time together over the next days. chan basically left skz into the hands of minho and his producing things to han and changbin, and the two spent a lot of time together before hyunwook was finally able to pull himself together and face the rest of the members.
and yeah, during that time they basically got closer and to the relationship now. :)
INTERACTIONS
they're really affectionate with each other. with chan, hyunwook shows his soft side and his vulnerable side. equally, chan doesn't have the burden of acting parent to hyunwook, nor is he in the presence of someone who had seen him grow up (cough cough, youngk), so he was able to show his actual self and who he really was.
there's a lot of skinship and a lot of mindless touching. not just in the ual sense, but hyunwook hugs chan, their fingers entwin absent-mindedly, you get the gist. he also kisses chan absent-mindedly, especially when hyunwook gets sleepy. one of his most common position?? interaction?? is when he falls asleep against chan and his lips brush his neck.
hyunwook also lessens up on the sarcasm and irony and sass and everything else when he's talking to chan. his voice becomes softer and there's less bite to his words and tone. again, he basically becomes someone else with chan - being the tsundere that he is he just shows a completely different version of himself to his boyfriend.
he also likes to flirt with chan randomly. hyunwook's hobby is to catch chan off guard with his flirting and make him flustered, which is basically what stays do on a daily basis on his vlive anyways. since hyunwook is so goddamn competitive he always try to out-flirt the stays.
because they don't always have the chance to meet up and be together physically, they text a lot. of course, with their busy schedules they can't always text, but they definitely text a lot - when they're going home on the car (when hyunwook hadn't crashed yet), before they sleep, etc.
hyunwook always prefer to call though. not video call, since he's always multitasking, but he likes to hear chan's voice. he also constantly reminds chan to go back on bubble because, yeah.
when he was still in jyp, whenever chan is working by himself in the studio, hyunwook just goes along to chill there. they don't necessarily have to talk to each other, and hyunwook is perfectly fine just being in his company. furthermore, chan also likes to ask for hyunwook's opinion about new music, which is why hyunwook is there.

still dating. i mean, nothing much is really going to change except the fact that hyunwook being a debuted idol needs to take care of his and his group's reputation more, which means he has to be less reckless and less obvious about his relationship with chan - which he does anyways since chan already needs to do something similar. they meet up occasionally and whatnot, and hyunwook sometimes hang out with chan in jyp, but since they're both from newly debuted groups, they don't really have much time.

— and if dispatch exposes them, hyunwook would brush off the accusations, claiming that their skinship and closeness stems from the fact that they're from abroad, not because they're gay (he has contingency plans after contingency plans, boi is extremely prepared)
