if you ask most people to describe jaerim, the first word that comes to mind is smart. And it's true, the boy is way smarter than the average person out there. jaerim's head is filled with countless facts about everything under the sun, and he's naturally gifted at numbers. jaerim is also very practical and often overanalyses things because of his smarts. for example, while others would simply do a task they are given, jaerim is inclined to spend hours thinking about how best to go about it, looking for all the weaknesses he could exploit, and worrying about the 1001 ways it could go wrong and how he can avoid it. Seriously, it's so bad that he even spends time calcultaing the angle at which to throw something. not to mention that watching movies with him is a nightmare as he tends to keep musing about how so many things are scientifically impossible. however, jaerim also uses his smarts to figure out patterns in everything he does, including dance moves, which is why he can learn entire choreographies in a matter of hours. although, the patterns he comes up with are patterns that only he understands and confuses everyone else if he tries to explain it. BECAUSE OF HIS SMARTS, THE OTHER MEMBERS OFTEN PUSH DIFFICULT TASKS TO HIM AS HE CAN DEFINITELY FIND A WAY AROUND THE OBSTACLES. 

 

 

jaerim also has absolutely no sense of humor. when a joke is told, most people would laugh, but not jaerim. instead, it simply confuses him as the joke is scientifically unrealistic because gravity doens't allow that to happen, or the traits of mankind wouldn't allow that kind of behaviour etc. even when jokes do make sense scientifically, he doesn't understand it either as his lack of interaction with people means that he has no idea when someone is joking or not. NEVERTHELESS, HE DOES MAKE AN EFFORT TO TRY AND KEEP UP WITH THE OTHERS, OFTEN SMILING SOFTLY AND CHEERING ON THE OTHERS WHEN THEY'RE DOING SOMETHING. also, jaerim is unable to effectively read other people as he never spends much time around others when he was younger, thus he can be oblivious to others' feelings or actions.

 

being an introvert, jaerim prefers to stick by himself out of the spotlight. he hates drawing a lot of attention to himself, and is constantly hiding behind others or hovering at the back of the group, simply observing what they're doing rather than participating. jaerim also doesn't talk much about himself, or about anything at all... except when it comes to science or food. while he usually wears poker faces or awkward smiles, when it comes to his two favourite subjects, his demeanor completely changes. his eyes light up, a real smile graces his face and he's enthusiasticly blabbering on about something, rather than giving short sentences and leaving others to do the rest of the talking. jaerim wasn't born into a very unusual family. his family wasn't poor, wasn't rich and didn't have extreme problems. he grew up as an average child, albeit a very sickly one. as a child, he had a weak immune system, and would fall sick easily. because of this, jaerim wasn't allowed by his parents to run around much. while other children were outside playing with their friends, jaerim would be stuck indoors by himself as none of the other kids were very much willing to give up their precious lunchtime playtimes in the sun to hang out with that quiet kid inside. with nothing to do, jaerim started his hobby of reading. he would read all the time, during lunchtimes at school and at home, when he was practically confined to his room. while most would consider this to be a chore, jaerim was more than happy. he had never liked the outdoors much, and always hated the annoying chatter of other children. and so begun his extroverted ways. he enjoyed reading so much that even when he had gotten older, and his parents deemed him fit enough to go outside and play, he preferred to stay by himself, surrounded by the mountain of books his parents indulged him with. After all, knowledge is good, in their opinion.

 

with all that reading, it comes as no surprise that jaerim's smarts started to improve tremendously. he could remember all those random geography, history, science and other facts easily, and soon, he was one of the smartest kids in his year. he quickly gained a reputation for being the teacher's pet, and the other children started to avoid him more and more, which would contribute to his introvertedness. by the time jaerim was 10, he was rarely speaking and often chose to hide himself away in dark corners to read his books. this worried his teachers and they eventually called his parents, who although weren't too concerned as they just wanted their son to be happy and comfortable the way he wanted, also agreed to try to make him more outgoing. And their method for this was to make jaerim follow his way more social brother, wonjae, around. wonjae didn't really mind as he had gained a personal servant in jaerim, and introduced jaerim to several of his friends, of which included choi junhong.

junhong had immediately taken a liking to the quiet jaerim and thought his shy ways were quite endearing. as such, he tried his best to befriend jaerim and protect him from all those school bullies who enjoyed teasing him. even when jaerim had drifted back to his old ways, junhong had kept following him around, always trying to make him smile with silly antics or trying to convince him to go and hang out with him, instead of 'musty and dusty old books'. junhong quickly became jaerim's closest friend, and the two were soon inseparable depsite being in different years. they were frequently seen with each other, and where jaerim was, junhong was sure to be close by. 

until one day junhong decided that he wanted to go audition at yg entertainment. being the supportive friend, jaerim had agreed to go audition with him to support him. long story short, jaerim was the one accepted into yg entertainment instead of junhong. although he was more than willing to give up this opportunity to go with junhong to audition at other places, the latter convinced him to stay at yg, saying that it was a waste to let this rare chance go, that jaerim needed to learn how to be independant. the two eventually parted ways after both of them promising each other that they would one day stand on a stage together.

as a trainee at yg, jaerim is that one trainee who hardly speaks. he's always hanging around near the back of the group, and is rarely seen up front in the center of attention. he still prefers to spend time by himself, and takes every moment he can to just sit it a corner with his nose buried in his book instead of playing around with the other trainees although they d try their best to include him in whatever they're doing. jaerim also prefers working alone, although he does do his best to cooperate when he needs to work in a group. although jaerim has quite the reputation for learning dance moves very fast, no one really approaches him, and he doesn't approach them either. despite this, he still faces some bullies who don't do anything to harm him physically but are always insulting him, saying that with his personality, he would never have a chance to debut and should just go home. however, these bullies are usually chased off by the other trainees, who although don't know him very well, still sort of look out for him as he gives off the sense that he's extremely fragile and they would feel guilty if anything were to heppen to such a harmless person.

i guess i would be happy? the first thing i'd do is tell junhong though, he's more hopeful for this than i am, whoops. i mean, like, i don't really know. i've thought about it a lot, and i think i'd be more shocked than happy if i was being truthful. though you can't exactly feel two emotions at once, according to this research i read about, so i guess i would be shocked. um... yea, i'd be shocked, then i'll tell junhong.

 

i didn't actually. it's junhong's fault that i'm even here. that idiot was too scared to go audition by himself even though i calculated that there would only be a 36.4% chance of things going wrong during the audition, so i went for the audition with him to support him. thing is, uh, i got chosen instead of him? i didn't expect that at all, i didn't even think about that possibility... anyways, i was going to leave you know, after all i'm only here because of him, but junhong forced me to stay here because this was a rare opportunity and that only 0.6% of all hopefuls get chosen or something? I don't even know... yea,but i only decided to join when he promised me that we're going to perfomr on the same stage one day, though in theory that has a very low chance of happening since i lack so much talents. so i joined and trained to have a chance to debut and fulfill the promise.

 

it's going to be tough... after all, this is supposed to challenge us right? so it should be tough... at least for me. i don't think the others are going to have much of a problem, to be honest, since they're so talented and stuff... also, i'm not really confident about my abilities, and i don't expect the others to exactly take a liking to an awkward turtle like me, so it makes this all the more harder for me since i'd most likely have to work twice as hard to keep up with people who hate my guts... but still, i'm going to try my best in this!

 

no, not really. you see, i did some calculations, and i have about a 12% chance of becoming a member of 41N... since this is based on a lot of votes from both the other members and the fans, so it just makes it more difficult for me. like i said just now, it's extremely unlikely that the other members would be willing to deal with me, who's both awkward and needs a lot of improvement, so they'll all probably vote me as the weakness member... as for the fans, 72.4% of average fans prefer charismatic and uh, good looking guys, so not much hope from that area either... if it was just based on peformance, i might have been able to make it of i worked super hard, but since it's not... i'm not very confident...

 

um, i think i would most likely be the sub-rapper and sub-dancer? I'm not too sure myself... like i said, the other members are so much more talented while i still have a long way to go, so if i was chosen, the main positions would go to them since they're better than me and deserve the better positions.

it was when the mix & match members were being introduced to one another just before the project started. most of them had tried to say hello and make some small talk with jaerim, but when they realised that jaerim wasn't much of a talker, they all just drifted away to talk to the others. Except for one guy. he stuck to jaerim's side and chattered away as if they had known each other for years, completely ignoring the fact that jaerim was answering with single sentences. the other member had kept asking questions as well, and unable to escape his prying words, jaerim was forced to answer them with an awkward smile in place. however, slowly but surely, jaerim had opened up more and begun to talk and smile more as he conversed with the other.
