My Thoughts & Frustrations on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

First of all:

What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (
ALS)  is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.  Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons  die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

  • A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A" means no or negative.
  • "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment–"No muscle nourishment."
  • When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or wastes away.
  • "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the region.

Purpose of the Ice Bucket Challenge: { in my own words. lol )
Basically, everyone's muscles contracts when you bathe in cold water, am I right? So, what you're feeling is what a ALS person is feeling.

My thoughts:
The first time I heard it, I thought, "Another trend thing." because everyone is doing it. Afterwards, it's been filling up my Facebook, Instagram & Twitter. I was pretty annoyed about it. Until I saw the reason why everyone was doing it. It was for them. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is to raise awareness about the disease.

But you know what I see why other people do it ? Just a fun trend. I don't know whether my friends did or did not donate but I felt like they should know why they are doing it. I get it. It's a viral thing. I'm not saying that this challenge in a negative light, but what I'm trying to say that people should take it seriously, those people with ALS needs our help more than just a ice bucket challenge right?

So, I'm just basically annoyed. To those who are going to do it, please put it in mind that it is for them. You are supporting them. Helping them. & most importantly find a cure for them.

Maybe some of you could not donate, I understand. I want to donate but I can't just take money from my parents' cards--

⊙﹏⊙

But thank you for making ALS aware in your area & such. Good job you guys. < 3
