Secret Garden - Kdrama Review

So I just finished watching the Korean drama, Secret Garden. I know, I know. I am super late with this drama. I don’t know guys. This particular drama just never really appealed to me, and I never really made time to watch it. And here’s what I have to say. I can’t believe I didn’t watch it sooner. I absolutely fell in love with this drama. I admit, there were scenes where I wasn’t very impressed, as for other scenes, I was seriously BEYOND impressed.

First things first. CHARACTERS. I admit, I was really impressed by the characters in the first episode, especially Gil Ra Im (or should I say KeyLime LOL.) The characters really captivated me. I actually liked most of them for their unique qualities.  For example, Joo Won was painfully honest with his opinions in things. And when it comes to Kdramas, we don’t really see that often, unless it’s the..y’know.. mom. < u < As for the character development. It was actually quite well done in my opinion. The changes were pretty gradual, however, there were some times where it was kind of like, “where did that come from?” Now, as you all know, my opinion of a drama is based a lot on just the plain character and how they have developed throughout the drama. Secret Garden..man. I can honestly tell you that each and every character has grown on me, and by the end of the drama, I felt like (once again) I was watching my children slowly grow up and maturing. And by the way guys, the comic relief was simply amazing. I especially enjoyed the characters Secretary Kim (Kim Sung Oh), and Ah Young (Yoo In Na.) They were both very refreshing, and I really enjoyed it.

Casting guys. The. Casting. Okay. So, I absolutely loved it, and I would never change it whats so ever. HUGE props to Hyun Bin, who played as Joo Won. His acting impressed me the most I would say out of all the other actors/actresses in this drama. The times he had to act like a girl (Ra Im), it was nearly perfect. And let’s all just take a moment and appreciate those feminine screams of his. I’ve seen him in A Millionaires First Love (one of my all time favorite Korean films ever.) And I have to say, he has really improved as an actor. And I just can’t wait to see future project by him now that he’s finally out of the military! WHOOP WHOOP. Ha Ji Won also did a fantastic job. I absolutely loved her acting. Her crying scenes in my opinion were really realistic. They were drop dead ugly tears and sobs, and I loved it. As a ‘real’ person, I really appreciate the truth of the ugly tears, y’know? But yeah, I think everyone did a great job. And the funny thing is, I watched Secret Garden right after I finished the dramaI Hear You Voice. DO YOU GUYS KNOW HOW AWKWARD OF A TRANSITION THAT IS? OKAY. SO. Yoon Sang Hyun. Here I just got done watching a drama where he was the sweet innocent Lawyer Cha to the “hallyu star” Oska. x_x He played both roles perfectly though. I love him. AND HERE’S AN EVEN WEIRDER TRANSITION. Lee Jong Suk. From the cute loyal Sooha to the gay musician Tae Sun. Oh my gosh guys. I just loved it because I got to see these two amazing actors in a much different role then what I’ve seen them in. ♥ ALSO. Dude. Guys. I don’t know about you guys but I just loved Phillip Lee (Jong Soo Action School Directer.) He did a great job. Someone who also really caught my attention was Yoo In Na. I’m actually currently watching a drama with her in it too. Yeah. Guys. Y’know, the super stressful drama The Best Lee Soon Shin? Yupp. ANYWAYS, I loved her in here. It totally gave me a new view point of her acting, and it was super fresh and I loved it. Everyone else also did a great job. <3 Lots of props to the cast.

Something that made me love the drama even more was the super unique storyline. It gave the drama a sort of umf to make it different from other dramas. Yes there was the whole stereotypical rich boy meets poor girl thing, but for this drama, it was an exception. I really loved the storyline to be honest. And I absolutely loved the fairytale comparisons that they used. It was very, once again, unique. I give it a big thumbs up. Also, there was a lot of comedy that actually made me laugh. The comic relief was absolutely perfect. The transitions were very well done. And that goes for the switches between the characters Joo Won and Ra Im as well. There was so much irony in this whole entire drama in general too. And I'll tell you this. I loved it.

The symbolism was simply amazing. I thought that while watching this drama, I was keeping fairly close attention on the basic foreshadowing and symbolism calls. Man. Towards the end though, I was simply going “Oh my gosh. I did not notice that.” Even though the storyline may have strayed a little from being super fantastic, the writers really did know what they were doing with all of this symbolism stuff. I was very impressed, and I enjoyed simply watching how everything was going to unfold.

The ending. I was VERY satisfied. Instead of the typical last minute problem thing, they gave us a whole episode to kind of just relax and take in all of what was going to happen. And I will tell you this. I smiled nearly the whole last episode. It just made me really happy inside. Kdramas with good endings are honestly quite difficult to find, but Secret Garden was definitely one of those amazing dramas with a satisfying and awesome ending.

Overall, I really enjoyed this drama. It made me laugh, smile, and cry. There were times where I knew I should have been crying, but I just couldn’t find myself to be in tears. I felt like a horrible heartless beast. D: However there were times where I couldn’t help but let my tears flow. x_x But yeah! I really enjoyed this drama. It’s very entertaining in my opinion, and I definitely will miss it.

I’d recommend this drama to people who aren’t afraid of a little twist in a story. It’s very unique and super fun to watch. There will be times where you will cry, but as you keep watching, it will make up for everything. Believe me.

By the way, man. The track suits really do grow on you. //OTL
