[ style ] The words casual and comfortable describe Haruki’s style well. He likes a bit looser, easy to move in kind of clothes. He doesn’t really care that much about what’s in, if he likes it, he wears it (be it jeans and a hoodie or pants with a more dressy kind of shirt). He loves his collection of jeans and hoodies and accessory wise he likes hats and scarves. If he could he would go barefoot everywhere but that's not possible so he’ll wear sandals or sneakers depending on the weather.

Deeper Into the Rabbit Hole

[ personality ]
Haruki is an open and friendly person and because of that he finds meeting new people easy. That has worked in favor for him when he's had to move around because of his father's job. However, he has more acquaintances than true friends. Considering his ease of meeting new people and making small talk you could even call him a social butterfly. If there are a lot of people gathered somewhere, you're quite likely to find him there too. Although Haruki is open and talkative he prefers to keep his personal life personal. He’ll talk about his private issues only with people he trusts aka his friends or his mother and he hates it when strangers try to pry into his personal life. He’s not interested in knowing every single detail about other people’s lives so he doesn’t understand why they should know everything about him. If people don't notice his irritation keep pestering him he gets downright snarky. Some people might consider that rude but he doesn't care too much about what other people think of him.

If you hadn't guessed already Haruki is pretty blunt and usually speaks his mind about things. This is especially true when he's around his friends but he acts the same way around strangers too. Haruki's friends have gotten used to his ways, the same way they've grown used to his love of skinship, and aren't offended by his remarks nor by his touching. He tries to remember to be a bit more polite when talking with strangers or talking in public but he won't start sugarcoating things just because. With skinship Haruki tries to be more considerate and he won't push it if the other person seems uncomfortable with his touchiness. Sometimes his bluntness does hurt other people's feelings and he may feel bad about it but it's very unusual for him to take back what he said. Pretty much the only way for others to make him change his mind is if they have solid arguments proving their point. So in a way he is also stubborn, which can lead to trouble or be a positive thing, depending on the situation. In Haruki’s case the stubbornness has mostly gotten him in trouble both at home and at school. Then again, if Haruki wasn't as stubborn as he is, he wouldn't be where he is today. He's always worked hard for the things he wants and he doesn't give up easily.

Haruki also has a gentler, even an uncertain side to him that he only shows this side to his closest friends. He doesn’t want everyone to know his weaknesses. Sometimes he prefers the company of only a few people or just being alone. Being an only child, he’s gotten used to having his own space and at times he still wishes to be left alone. When Haruki was younger he questioned his talents a lot but over the years he has gained confidence. He still gets his moments of self-doubt but his friends are there to support him, which is why he loves and cherishes them and spends time with them whenever he can. However, when you see Haruki on stage you have no idea about his insecurities in performing. On stage he acts like an over-confident, flamboyant b-boy. He wants people to notice him and his skills so he can be bit of a show off. Because of the way he acts some people think he’s cocky but that’s really not the case.

[ background ]
Haruki has lived and gone to school in three different countries because of his father's job. Those countries are Korea, Japan and the USA (in order of first to latest). Haruki was actually born in Japan where his mother had gone to visit relatives. Some emerging family issues kept her in Japan longer than intended and she gave birth to Haruki in Fukuoka and also made the decision on his name. She returned to her Daegu as soon as it was possible and the family lived there for two years before moving to Incheon. When Haruki was ten his father got transferred to Osaka, Japan and the family moved there. Haruki had been to Japan before visiting his mother’s relatives, so he already knew some Japanese. At first he was struggling at school but with extra tuition he more or less caught up with the others. However, he was not that interested in academics and his teachers always thought he could do better if he just took studying more seriously. He just didn’t like science subjects that much, so he did what he had to, not much more. Haruki’s lack of interest had shown a little even back in Korea but it came more obvious as he grew older. This attitude got him into some trouble at home, and he quite often found himself grounded and told to study harder.

In Japan Haruki started taking dancing lessons. He had always loved performing and had sang and danced to his parents (mostly mom, because his dad was busy with work). He also joined the drama club in school and got into acting. These things started to take up more and more of his time and when he was twelve he told his parents that he’s gonna be an idol when he grows up. Haruki’s father wasn’t pleased about his ‘career choice’. He had hoped his son would pick a more respectable occupation and at the time thought it might be just a phase that Haruki will gtow out of. Haruki’s mother was more supportive, because she had been an aspiring singer. However, her career ended before she became popular due to health issues.

Haruki’s family lived in Japan for five years. When Haruki was fifteen they moved again, this time to San Jose, USA. Haruki didn’t want to leave Japan because at the age of thirteen he had been accepted as a trainee for Johnny’s Entertainment. He had no say in the matter however, and he was forced to resign. Haruki continued his singing and dancing lessons in the States. He got into more trouble at school because of his lack of interest and at first lack of common language. Also, his bluntness caused him to get into fights both at school and outside of school. You could almost say that he was rebelling against his father’s decision to accept the transfer and move in this way. Because dad wanted him to do well and get a proper job and education, Haruki did the opposite but managed to graduate with decent enough grades.

The family returned to Korea earlier than they expected because the company Haruki's father worked for shut down their American office. They settled in Incheon where his father fulfilled his dream of starting his own company. Haruki had already decided prior to the move that he was gonna apply as a trainee at some local entertainment company. He went to a few auditions but didn't get accepted and he was starting to feel a little disheartened by all the rejection. However he wasn't ready to give up quite yet and went to one more audition at Je T'aime Entertainment and this time he passed.

The Good, The Bad & The Insane

[ family ]
father | Jung YoungHwan | 52 (October 7, 1960) | CEO of a software development company | alive
personality: YoungHwan is a demanding and strict man who has high expectations about the people around him and that includes his son. He is a little old fashioned on his views of work and education which has led to many conflicts between him and Haruki. He is hardworking and stubborn and his son has certainly inherited these traits. He has a sharp mind and can be witty and funny when he wants to be but most people only get to see his 'business face'.
interaction: Strained is a very fitting word to describe Haruki's relationship with his father. When Haruki was younger he didn't see his father all that often because YoungHwan worked long hours which made Haruki feel distanced from him and that's how things have remained to this day. Haruki's father worked hard to get where he is today and he doesn't really approve of his sons career choice because he doesn't view being an idol a real job. He'd much rather have his son take over the company one day than see him become an idol. The two have had many arguments about the issue and Young Hwan doesn't pay much attention to what's happening with Haruki's career, not that he'd have much time to do so anyway because he's busy with his company. Although their relationship is strained Haruki and his father try to act civil around each other when they meet because their arguments upset Shizuko.

mother | Matsua Shizuko | 49 (March 20, 1964) part time secretary/housewife | alive
personality: She's a hardworking, optimistic and kind woman. She is usually quite lenient with Haruki but she can be strict like her husband when she needs to. She's always encouraged Haruki to follow his dreams because you never know what the future brings. She likes helping people and seeing others succeed makes her feel happy.
interaction: Haruki and his mother are close. If something is bothering him he knows he can go talk to her and she'll help him if she can. Haruki's mother is probably his biggest fan and she goes to watch his performances and to cheer him on whenever she can. Sometimes Haruki gets embarrassed by her behavior but he does appreciate the support he gets. The fact that his son and husband don't get along too well upsets Shizuko and she tries to keep the peace in the house when the two of them are home. Haruki has tried to tell her to stop worrying about it so much but he hasn't had any luck with that.

[ idol best friends ]
Park Sanghyun (Cheondoong/Thunder)| 22 (October 7, 1990) | MBLAQ
Personality: At a first glance Thunder appears to be cold and distant but once he gets to know people better he opens up. He's a caring person who cherishes the people around him. He's close to his sister and is quite protective over her. He likes to have fun but according to the other members his comedy skills need work.
How you met: Their first meeting was random and happened while Haruki still had his part-time job as a waiter. It was a slow day so Haruki started a conversation with Thunder without having any idea who he was. He only learned later Thunder had already debuted in MBLAQ and felt kind of embarrassed about not knowing that.
Interaction: Their dynamic was a little weird in the beginning because even though Haruki is older than Thunder the younger man is his senior in the industry. Nowadays they're more natural with each other and have sorted out what honorifics to use. Haruki has come to the conclusion that Thunder is very reliable and feels like he can talk with him about almost anything and hopes that Thunder feels the same way too. The one topic Haruki tries to avoid is Dara because he's worried about revealing that he likes her and he's bit scared about Thunder's reaction even if they're friends. Thunder has his suspicions about Haruki and Sandara but so far he hasn't said anything, though he likes to bring the topic up once in a while just to see Haruki get flustered (just like a younger brother might tease his big brother about their crush).

[ idol friends ]
Kim Junsu | 26 (December 15, 1986) | JYJ
Personality: Junsu is easy-going, silly and hardworking. In general he's a fun guy to be around. He can be a little shy when he meets people for the first time and he is emotional. He's also quite sporty and loves soccer.
How you met: Haruki literally walked into Junsu on his way to his soccer practice. He wasn't watching where he was going and bumped into Junsu who was on his way out. Haruki apologized and after introductions they started talking about soccer and their shared passion for the sport made them pretty much instant friends.
Interaction: Their relationship is hyung-dongsaeng like. Haruki looks up to Junsu and treats him with respect though at times he can't resist teasing Junsu a little for being so emotional. Junsu gives tips to Haruki on the idol business and doesn't mind his teasing although at first he found it somewhat annoying. If they have enough free time they like to go play soccer together and that's when they can get competitive but it's never really serious.

Shin Soohyun | 24 (March 11, 1989) U-Kiss
Personality: Soohyun is talkative and energetic and at times others may find his energy to be a little too much. He can get a little too excited about things and he’s probably the one in the group who likes fanservice the most. He tries to keep the others from doing anything too silly but eventually he ends up getting involved in it. That maybe isn’t so surprising considering the fact he used to be the class clown in school. He likes to poke fun at the others but does it in a nice way. Even if Soohyun comes off little silly at times he takes his role as the leader of U-KISS seriously. When there is some trouble he gets everyone together to solve the issues. He has a lot of determination and he is well organized although it may not always seem like it because of his silly side.
How you met: Haruki actually went to a U-Kiss fan meet after Sarang-A's debut and met Soohyun there. They talked a little when Haruki went to get his autograph and Haruki loitered around till after the event hoping he didn't seem too stalkerish. To Haruki's surprise Soohyun came out to talk to him and they changed numbers and that's how their friendship started.
Interaction: Soohyun and Haruki are the same age so they're less formal with each other even though Soohyun too is Haruki's senior in the industry. Soohyun likes to poke fun at Haruki the same way he does with his group members and Haruki doesn't take it personally. These two can talk about anything for hours and sometimes they lose the track of time leading to annoyed calls/messages from the other members about a) where on earth are they? and b) what are they doing? If they happen to be at the same show recording fans get treated with some fanservice because neither of them has a problem with it.

Kitayama Hiromitsu | 27 (September 17, 1985) | Kis-My-Ft2
Personality: Kitayama likes to do things at his own pace and doesn't like being interrupted. He's passionate about the things he likes and isn't afraid to take initiative when he's doing something. He cares a lot about the people he deems important to him (family and friends). He's good at giving advice and is straightforward with people because he doesn't like to lie. All of that makes Kitayama seem very grown up but he has his childish moments too and his group members consider him to be one of the more childish member despite his age. Kitayama like's doing certain sports but he also loves his sleep. He can fall asleep anytime, anywhere and doesn't like being woken up. That's one of the times Kitayama can actually be mean.
How you met: Haruki and Kitayama auditioned for Johnny's at the same time in 2002 (and passed too).
Interaction: When they first met Haruki treated Kitayama the same way he treated his same age friends. He had no idea how old the other one was and sort of freaked out when he learned Kitayama was that much older than he is and he'd been more informal with him. Lucky for him Kitayama didn't mind though Haruki was a little awkward around Kitayama for a while after his discovery. Because Haruki belonged to the Kansai juniors he didn't get to see Kitayama as often as he would've wanted to but that made him appreciate their meetings more. The two have always been straightforward with each other and Kitayama was the person Haruki talked to/sent mails to when something training related bothered him. After Haruki's move the two stayed in touch via e-mail and tried to meet up (to talk, play soccer etc.) whenever Haruki went to Japan to visit relatives and that's the way things have remained. They meet up when they can and otherwise send texts and e-mails.

[ non-idol friends ]
Song HyunJin | 24 (February 9, 1989) | alive
Personality: HyunJin is amiable, flirtatious and outspoken guy who has a liking for skinship. To be honest he's bit of a playboy and has commitment issues in relationships. However, as a friend he's loyal and trustworthy. He's willing to stand up for his friends and defend them in any situation (sometimes against the wishes of the friend[s] in question). He's prone to get in trouble for the things he says but it's never stopped him from speaking his mind. He has earned a reputation of being a troublemaker and it's true. He doesn't necessarily mean to get himself or anyone else in trouble but sometimes he speaks too much or ends up doing something stupid.
How you met: Haruki and HyunJin were classmates in elementary school.
Interactions: As kids Haruki and HyunJin were almost inseparable at school. If they had pair-work they did it together and they also hung out outside of school. Even when Haruki moved away the kept in touch through e-mails and texts and met up whenever Haruki visited Korea. They like to tease each other and know that they can be as blunt as they want with each other; they've known each other long enough not to get offended by any remarks. They're (sort of) attached at the hips when out in public and because of that people have mistaken them for a couple. Those who have seen how they act behind closed doors (they've been caught kissing once or twice) are even more skeptical about the nature of their relationship but they really are just friends.

David Zhang | 25 (April 18, 1988) | alive
Personality: David is modest and considerate, always thinking things through from every possible angle before doing or saying anything. In this sense he's almost complete opposite of Haruki but that's probably why they go so well together. Because of his thoughtful nature he can take forever to finish something but when he does finish there's rarely a need to re-do anything. Sometimes David can lose the track of time and get so lost in doing something that he doesn't notice anything going on around him which has earned him a reputation of being bit of an air-head but he doesn't really care. He'd rather just get things done properly the first time and so what if he gets lost in his thoughts once in a while. It's hard to get David truly angry but when that happens he's not pleasant to be around. When he's mad he'll either ignore the other person totally or gives short answers in a tone that says 'leave-me-the--alone-if-you-know-what's-good-for-you'.
How you met: David lived in the same neighborhood in the US. They also attended the same dance school and once Haruki recognized him he went to talk to David and that was the start of their friendship.
Interaction: David and Haruki got along well right from the start. They like having random conversations about things they like. They can spend hours chatting on Skype since they rarely get to meet face-to-face nowadays. They used to spend hours together practicing dancing and giving each other tips on how to get better. At first Haruki's love for skinship made David feel awkward but he got used to it over time and the talks they had about the issue helped too. Sometimes they end up bickering about random things but they resolve their differences quickly.

[ rival ]
Kwon Jiyong (G-Dragon) | 24 (August 18, 1988)| Big Bang
Personality: GD might appear cold and distant but actually he's a cheerful guy. He is also outgoing and has high self-esteem. His mood is reflected on his behavior and he can be either cool or cold, depending on how he feels that day. GD's reliable and has good leadership skills. Because of his song-writing and producing skills GD has been dubbed a genius. He can get ill-tempered at performance practices because they require so much concentration and his perfectionism probably isn't helping things.
How you met: At a music show recording back in 2011 when Big Bang was beginning their Tonight promotions.
Why are you rivals: Basically it all boils down to one-sided jealousy by Haruki (he's jealous about how close GD and Dara seem to be and how much time GD gets to spend with Dara because they're in the same company). Haruki knows it's probably quite petty and childish to view someone as a rival just because of that but he can't help himself.
Interaction: GD treats him like the industry junior he is and remains professional whenever they meet. Haruki tries his best to be polite if they're at same shows because that's professional but outside of work he doesn't want to have anything to do with the guy. Sometimes Haruki's snarky side wins even at public meetings though and he wouldn't be surprised if GD considered him to be bit of a brat or something. There's no obvious animosity between the two but people probably can tell that they're not the best of friends.

[ love interest in the group ] I'm fine with this.

[ ideal type ] Guy or girl? Not that there’s much of a difference personality wise. Generally speaking someone who likes dogs and is at least somewhat interested in sports. Also someone who's not too clingy because he needs his alone time. Age doesn't matter all that much to him as long as he get along with that person. Faithfulness is also a trait Haruki appreciates, so dating someone who’s a big flirt wouldn’t sit well with him.
Looks wise for guys: Someone handsome, not overtly muscular and with cute eye-smile. And for girls: someone cute and petite, again with eye-smile.

[ first lover ] Sandara Park | 28 (November 12, 1984) | 2ne1
[ personality ] If you had to pick just one word to describe Dara I guess quirky would be quite fitting. She hasn't had the easiest life but she's still bubbly and energetic. Some people may find her energy too much to handle at times but that's just the way she is. Sometimes she does random things just to make other people laugh and to make them feel happy. Dara has always worked hard to achieve her dreams and always gives 100% in whatever she does. She has perseverance and determination that have helped her to get where she is today. The success hasn't gone to Dara's head and she remains humble, remembering to thank everyone for their support, gifts etc. Though Dara is such a bubbly person she can get a little shy around guys she doesn't know well. Sometimes she gets tired and feels lonely and that's when she needs others to be there for her instead of being the one cheering them up. She also gets upset (sometimes to the point of crying) if she feels like she hasn't done her best.
[ the first meeting ] Haruki had agreed to meet up with Thunder at a cafe and was surprised to find the younger one there with a woman he didn't know. When Haruki got to the table Thunder introduced  Sandara to him and that's when Haruki realised she's Thunder's sister. Their first meeting was cut short because Dara had to leave for practice but even during that brief encounter she managed to catch Haruki's eye and he took to following 2ne1's activities more carefully after that.
[ relationship ] It's a noona-dongsaeng type relationship but Haruki wants more. He's just not sure how to go about it because he and Sandara have been friends for a while now and her brother is his best friend.
[ interaction ] At first Dara was a little awkward around Haruki because she didn't know him but now she's her usual bubbly, random self around him. She doesn't mind treating Haruki to lunch/dinner once in a while and she sends him supporting texts when he's got work. As a matter of fact, the two text a lot because their schedules don't always allow meetings and, well, meeting too often would lead to rumors and that's not what they want. Haruki lets his on stage persona shine through bit more than normal at times because he wants Dara to notice him. When he's not trying to get her attention with whatever he thinks might work he's respectful and gentlemanny (and secretly wishes Dara would stop treating her like a little brother/friend).
[ the love story ] I guess this would be from friends to lovers kind of story. The two met a little before Sarang-A's original debut and after bit over two years of being friends Haruki goes 'what do I have to lose?' and finally asks Dara out. She's little unsure about dating at first but says yes in the end. The two keep it a secret from everyone, including Thunder and he gets weirded out about it when he first hears they're dating. After giving some thought to the idea Thunder more or less accepts it. And I leave the rest up to you.

[ the break-up ] After Haruki moved back to Korea the two didn't really get too many chances to meet. They tried having a long distance relationship but it didn't really work out for them so they thought it'd be better to end the relationship before things got bad and go back to being friends instead.
[ contact ] Oh yes, they do. (see above)

[ who ] Yang EunRi | 25 (January 10, 1987) | alive
[ personality ]
EunRi can be a little hotheaded at times but she's not one to hold grudges for a long time which is good because she can be quite spiteful when she's angry. She's very dedicated when it comes to work and achieving her goals. She has a competitive streak and she always aims to be best at everything she does. Though EunRi seems very work-focused and serious she can relax around her friends and likes to go out to party and to wind down once in a while. She adores all of her friends and likes to surprise them once in a while with random home baked goodies.
[ the meeting ]  EunRi worked at the same cafe as Haruki back in the day.
[ the break-up ] They just couldn't find enough free time to do things together outside of work so they decided to call it quits after about six months.
[ contact ] No, not really.

[ trainee years ] 5 years

[ trainee history ] Trainee life was pretty much what Haruki expected based on his experience in Japan. He liked the other trainees and had fun at their practices most of the time though there were days when he'd rather have been doing something else (like playing soccer outdoors). The one thing that really upset and angered him was getting told they'd have to go back to being trainees after having debuted. Haruki fumed about that for a week or so because he felt like it gave his father ammunition in their ongoing battle about his career and he wasn't exactly pleasant to be around during that time. When he'd calmed down he settled back to the practice schedule and decided to work even harder so as not to miss another chance.

Haruki expelled from school for fighting! | true | Haruki and some guys from his high school | resolved
Haruki wasn't exactly pleased about having to move from Japan to the USA because he had to resign from Johnny's and give up on his dream about becoming an idol at least for the time being. He continued to get in trouble for not paying attention in class which was due to his almost non-existent English skills. When he became more fluent in English it was his bluntness combined with his stubbornness that lead him to trouble. Haruki got into heated verbal arguments with some other boys and got verbal and written warnings threatening him with being expelled if things didn't change. Needless to say, Haruki didn't change his ways and one day things escalated from a verbal argument to a physical fight leading to him and another boy getting expelled for a month. There was no point in trying to deny this because there's written evidence in the school records.

Police catch Haruki speeding | true | Haruki (and the police I guess) | resolved
Haruki had been in Incheon to visit his mother. He had taken his car because didn't know how long he'd be staying and didn't want to have to count on public transport to get back to Seoul. On his way back to the city he got caught speeding by police who had been patrolling the streets. He knew the speed limit but had got lost in his thoughts and the speed had gone up and enough over the limit to warrant a speeding ticket. He was glad he got to keep his license and has tried to be better since then. Same as above, there was no point in denying when there's police records.

[rumor] Haruki's first kiss was with this mystery guy? | false | Haruki and HyunJin | ongoing
Back in the day before Haruki's debut he and HyunJin were younger and more stupid which lead to existence of a few questionable photographs. At an after party of their own the two had been selcas and in one that HyunJin took with his phone the two are kissing. Unfortunately for them HyunJin's phone then got stolen and that picture got into the wrong hands. Haruki lived on edge during Sarang-A's original debut because he was afraid of that photo surfacing but things got quite crazy for other reasons and that photo didn't appear anywhere. Because nothing happened at that time Haruki forgot about the whole thing and was caught off guard when the photo appeared first in the internet and then in print around the time of Sarang-A's re-debut. Accompanying the photo was article about Haruki's first kiss being caught on camera (the reporters made that claim based on how young he looked). Because of how clear the photo is, Haruki's had to  admit that, yes, it's him in the picture. Since he hasn't said anything more about the issue there's quite a lot of fandom/netizen speculation going on about the issue. [He did have his first kiss with a guy though, but it wasn't with HyunJin. That happened with David back when they dated.]

[ experience ]
In Japan he backdanced for Arashi on one of their tours and appeared on Shonen Club twice (Shonen club or Shokura being a show where Johnny's juniors get to perform).
In Korea he had a supporting role as an actor in a thriller called 'Into the Night' (A movie about a man who's family mysteriously disappears one night and he sets out to find out what happened to them).

Goodbye For Now
