Since I Could Remember

The drowsy amber light flickered erratically down the grim looking street. The young boy with coarse raven hair stumbled on his feet, leaning onto the grim brick walls. Specks of dirt plastered on his sickly dry skin when he allowed his body to crumble onto the merciless ground. He gasped desperately for air, but no matter how hard he tried, it seemed as if his lungs couldn’t inflate to hold enough capacity for him to breathe. There, the boy struggled under the twilight, where the dark blue sky blanketed over him and the neon stars twinkled upon his suffering.

His eyes squeezed shut, hoping to recall a happy moment in his life, yet nothing surfaced his mind. His mind was empty in that area. Instead, it was filled with moments of him battling his way around the streets just to search for some sort of food to keep him living. He wondered what happened during his eight years worth of living that caused him to live on the streets.

He couldn’t remember.

Silently, he prayed for a miracle to happen. There really wasn’t a point, since he lived a rather pitiful life, but for some reason, he wanted to live. He refused to believe that life would be so cruel on him. He didn’t want his life to end, having only memories of him scrambling the dirty old dustbins.

He felt something. He felt like he was drowning. Icy liquid was forcefully trickling down his small oesophagus until he was able to swallow it on his own. His eyes flickered open whilst his chest heaved up and down involuntarily, allowing a rush of cool air to flow into his lungs.

Repulsive fluid emerged from his innocent dark orbs, consequently blurring his vision. Slowly, he could see an outline of another young boy in front of him, holding a filthy water bottle in his tiny hands. The eight-year-old blinked away his tears to get a better look at the stranger.

Unlike him, the boy was better dressed and most likely better fed than he was, but he noticed that their clothing were starting to resemble rags. Their trousers were tainted with odd bits of grime and their jacket was tattered. He was probably new to the streets.

The eight-year-old gulped when his eyes observed their features; they were breathtaking. He couldn’t stop gazing into his eyes which seemed to have an idyllic spark in them, giving it an exquisite shade of brown.

After several minutes of comfortable silence, the stranger’s lips cracked into an angelic smile.

“I’m Luhan.” They greeted whilst his eyes turned into pleasant crescents. The eight-year-old bit his bottom lip.

“I-I don’t have a name.” His voice was almost inaudible to Luhan. He only heard the odd word, but it was enough for his brain to process what he’d said.

“I shall name you then. You’ll be called Sehun. Come on, Sehun. Let’s go.” Luhan said enthusiastically, dragging the confused boy by the wrist until he collapsed onto the merciless concrete again. Luhan stared at him with his mouth agape. He crouched down to his level and started brushing loose strands of hair away from the boy’s face, revealing his define features. “Our Sehun is really handsome.” He grinned before patting him on the head.

Sehun continued to give him a baffling gaze. He didn’t quite comprehend the intention of the stranger, but he was instantly drawn to the warmth that emitted from him. It was pleasant; something he hadn’t felt in a long time, or maybe he had never felt that pleasant feeling, period – he simply couldn’t remember.

Luhan turned his back towards him and Sehun instantly felt fear erupt in his tiny body. He didn’t want the boy to leave. It had been so long since someone actually acted as if they’d cared for him. Sehun remained still with disappointment filling his eyes, only to be startled when he heard Luhan’s voice again.

“I’ll carry you. Hold onto me.”

His shaky fingers reached out for Luhan’s shoulders whilst Luhan placed his hands on the young boy’s thighs before standing up and shuffling him further onto his back.

Happiness fluttered inside Sehun’s petite frame without Luhan knowing – it was the first happy memory that he could and forever remember.
