"I loved you from the start, you know."

Hello! Today (April 4th) is a very special day, so that makes today's mubank a very special mubank! Today, I will be sharing Super Junior's "Raining Spell For Love (Original Version)" released in 2014 on 7jib Mamacita. They recently remade this song in 2020 for their 10jib The Renaissance, though without Kangin and Sungmin and instead with the addition of Yesung (who was in the military during 7jib).

The lyrics of this song explore their feelings after a breakup, or at the very least, during a relationship beginning to fall apart. They want time to freeze, and for the storm of sadness to stop so they can hold onto you a little longer, if not forever. They'll call for you, chase, and reach for you in the rain, not caring if they get wet or hurt in the process, and not caring that they'll become resentful of whatever drove you apart. If there's some way for you to come back, they'll do it. And even if you do end up disappearing in the end, they'll wander looking for you and hold onto the last drop to stay loving you forever.

The 2014 version of this song has a faster tempo and is more dramatic than the remake. It starts with the sounds of a storm, which then fades into Eunhyuk's monologue and the introduction of strong, stomping bass that'll follow you throughout most of the song. Alongside the piano is quiet synth that gives off a tragic feel. However, as Eunhyuk raps in the second verse, this synth is louder with a sudden shift into a darker, heavier techno sound. With his impassioned rapping, it really drives home the desperation they feel for you to return-- just like a destructive thunderstorm, their growing obsession. It gives way to the lighter piano-accented sound again after he's done, like the storm clearing up. In the bridge, despite the background sounding the same, Kyuhyun and Ryeowook's prominent vocals really build into the , where they all sing without bg to introduce the final choruses. And what's not to love about those moments?

As lovely as this song is, though, I'd say it's a little too quick. It's so easy to get into it, and it's over before you can grasp all of the emotion. I think that's a fascinating difference between this version and the 2020 remake, because while the 2020 remake is calmer, it sort of loses the punchy drama the 2014 version has. It really makes you think about how different K-Pop was then, and by extension how different SuJu was. It's beautifully bittersweet, and I love it.
