AN abstruse MIND
PERSONALITY — depending on who you ask chengcheng is either a criminal or the most influential dude ever. he's an intelligent guy that can pick up on subtle cues and knows how to use people to his advantage. coming up with schemes right under the noses of the government without getting caught has become a hobby of his. he can read people like the back of his hand and see their true intentions from a mile away. but he never breaks his cool, even his band doesn't understand how he can remain calm in the most chaotic moments. its apart of what makes him such a great leader, along with his ability to charm almost anyone. fancheng is the definition of a smooth talker, he could get guys blushing if he wanted to and can charm his way out of any situation. for someone that's such a rebel he doesn't come off as one, you'd never believe that he could come up with some of the things he does. how can such a seemingly easy going guy be so...deceiving?

it's only those that are observant themselves that can see the contradiction in his personality. the little eyebrow furrows when someone says something he doesn't agree with although he composes himself relatively quickly. how he slowly gets more and more passive aggressive and sarcastic with each comment or how he'd just outright change the topic when he no longer wants to talk about something. chengcheng is a very controlling person, from his surroundings to his future he likes to be in control of it all. mostly because he has a certain goal and wants to see it achieved no matter what, any slip up can cause him a lot of trouble so he has to be careful but he controls people in subtle ways so they usually don't realize. he knows how to sympathize with people, bond over their trauma to make them feel seen and only fall for whatever he tells them. his manipulation skills manifest in his powers as well, which he is well aware of. he puts messages in his songs on purpose, gets his audience worked up on topics that he thinks they should be worked up about so they can obey him. they are actual systematic issues so he's using his powers for good but to say that all of his fans greatly care about all of the issues they fight for isn't true, they're compelled to care.

it just shows how determined chengcheng is to get his message across. the moment his father passed he was determined to make a change the system and when he moved to taoxia it only opened his eyes to more. he has absolutely no respect for people in power because they don't respect him so ticking them off makes him a lot happier than the average person. although since chengcheng's purpose comes from a place of loss and hurt, there's a lot of emotion behind everything he does. he's so used to holding his emotions in that he barely talks about it, songs are the only outlet for his emotions. he might stay calm on the outside but on the inside he's very passionate about it.

TL;DR — ENTJ-A, slytherin, choletic-phlegmatic, 8w9
(+) intelligent, observant, charming, ambitious, sympathetic, mild-mannered
(–) manipulative, stubborn, rebellious, controlling, passive-aggressive

BIOGRAPHY — fancheng was born in malu as ding chengcheng, the only son of soldier ding yihang and nurse mao waizhu. chengcheng heard a lot about the war growing up from his father, he came from a line of nurses and soldiers. none of them were of great position but it was seen as a sense of pride for their family and they kept the tradition going. for a long time chengcheng thought being a soldier was an amazing thing, he looked up to his father as some kind of hero and was excited to serve his nation someday himself. that was until his father passed away when he was 14. all they received was a letter of condolences from the captain that seemed like a standard letter that they send to everyone, only replacing the name of the deceased and the recipient. soldiers and nurses didn't get paid as much as you'd think but together they were fine. though now that his father was gone it wasn't so easy. due to the financial situation of the kingdom they weren't given any compensation for his death as the families traditionally were. instead they invited him to study equestrian and archery in taoxia while his mom was forced to work extra shifts to make ends meet.

his mom was excited for him to go to taoxia and continue the family tradition but chengcheng didn't feel the same. he saw it as them turning him into another disposable soldier, fighting for a kingdom that doesn't care about him. being at taoxia imperial academy only proved his point, seeing how much better the noblemen children were treated compared to the "lessers". they gave the impression that attending such a prestigious academy would give poor people opportunities when actually they still stayed beneath the wealthy no matter how much smarter or better they were. the system was rigged from the start, the poor stayed poor and the rich stayed rich. even in the military high ranking officials were chosen based on their background, rarely for their skills.

chengcheng spent three years at taoxia imperial academy, instead of studying to be the best soldier he can be he constantly tested the waters. he was actually talented in both equestrian and archery, probably an ancestral gift, but instead he didn't apply himself and gave his instructors a hard time. over a span of three years his mom recieved about 47 letters of warnings for chengcheng's bad behaviors. everytime he went home he received a smack on the back of the head but that never stopped him from acting out all over again.

while studying he learned how to play the shamisen. he formed a band called youngblood with his friends for fun and they played their own songs on campus at underground parties. it was a way for all of them to relieve stress from their busy schedules. their sound was different from the traditional music, they were loud headbangers. they sang songs about their struggles as students, love, heartbreak, and other relatable stuff for anyone around their age. chengcheng never thought he had an amazing voice even though he was the lead singer, but it didn't take them long to realize the hypnotic ability that he had on his audience. when he said jump, not one person wasn't jumping, it was like they were under his spell. it didn't take long for them to get popular on campus actually and get other gigs building an off-campus fanbase.

by the time he was 18 his band got discovered by manager kuei who saw their potential, especially with how devoted their fans were. they dropped out of school and moved to fanghua to play a bunch of gigs and work with professional musicians to refine their sound. for the next two years they performed in all major cities, steadily growing their fanbase and becoming celebrities. at only 18 chengcheng was living the high life, getting access to things that he never would before. he had the world at the palm of his hand, girls threw themselves at him, he wore the nicest clothes, and anything he wanted he got. he seemingly cracked the code of wealth that he once saw as so unattainable. but it was all a facade, manager kuei took most of their earnings and they weren't able to make the music they wanted. with all the influence he had on the youth he felt his voice wasn't being heard because he couldn't say what he wanted, it was all monitored. he has a theory that many of his fans believe that manager kuei was hired to sign them to control the hold they had on the youth.

after much deliberation with his band, they broke their contract and decided to go underground. they went back to their original sound instead of the softer mainstream one they adopted, their lyrics talked about controversial topics in the government and society. youngblood went from a mainstream band loved by the general public to a revolutionary band that encouraged their fans to fight for what they believed in. equality and fair opportunity, standing up against oppression, finding true love and eloping, marrying whoever you want regardless of , high taxes and low wages, are just a few of the topics he sings about. there were a few times that chengcheng got arrested for disrupting the piece due to his fans protesting though the longest he's spent in jail was a week. they could never hold him longer because he never directly told them to do anything, "it's just a song," he'd say with a smirk fully aware of the power he holds.

youngblood has been deemed highly inappropriate for youth and is hated by both adults and parents. most venues won't let him perform so he resorts to performing in lesser known underground venues in both major cities and villages that get spread through word of mouth. instead of living in fanghua they live in the wai forest in an elaborate treehouse where they can practice and live away from the authorities, however, they’re often moving and performing too. chengcheng doesn't see himself as bad though, he thinks he's doing good by teaching them to stand up for themselves instead of tip toeing through life carefully and going nowhere. but of course anyone that doesn't follow the establishment is a problem instead of working to fix the actual issues.

GOALS — he wants to change society, allow the working class to have more of a say in the government and equal opportunities. he doesn’t only want youngblood to be known as a band but go down in history as a movement.
Love, Like a rock
FAMILY —
  • mao waizhu — 45 — nurse — still known as nurse mao no matter how many times chengcheng told her to quit because he’ll take care of her bills, waizhu is a supportive mother. a lot of the distant relatives look down on chengcheng for dropping out of school and being a controversial musician instead of a soldier but she stood by him. she believes in his music career but wishes he didn’t get in trouble so often. she worries about him a lot and tells him to take care of himself and stay out of trouble everytime he comes back home. he usually just brushes off her worries and gives her a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. either way she loves the band and everytime they visit malu they go see her and are welcomed with a big malu-style feast.
YOUNGBLOOD —  youngblood is chengcheng’s band founded by him when he was 16. he wanted a way to express himself and music seemed like the most suitable option. now youngblood is known for their dark metal music and a fiercely loyal fanbase. they pack a show full of teens and young adults that need to headbang their frustrations away. they usually dress in black and red and paint their face, their music tends to talk about social issues and fighting for what you believe in. their fans are known for hiding their faces and rioting for different social issues. they can get quite rowdy, setting fires and trashing police stations are only some of their many offenses. but they rarely get caught because by the time they finish they take off their coverings and blend in with the crowd. youngblood is well known amongst authorities for constantly stirring the pot but they’re hard to pinpoint. since they don’t perform at official venues officials have no way of figuring out where they’ll be next or when the next riot will be held. their fanbase never squeals either, it’s like their sworn to secrecy or something.
  • cai jiaying — zexin 擇欣 — 22 — backup vocalist and erhu player of youngblood — zexin got invited to study math when she was 15 after scoring abnormally high on a test. being a math major at taoxia imperial academy stressed her out so she used playing the erhu as an outlet for that. she joined youngblood as a fun hobby but it turned into a lot more than she expected. that’s why she chose her stage name which means choose happiness, which is what she did when she dropped out with the rest of youngblood. she’s the mom of the group, nags them when they’re being messy idiots and is there for them when they need a shoulder to cry on. a lot of the time she plays devils advocate and gives them a new perspective from a girls point of view. she helps chengcheng write about topics related to the struggles that women go through like ism so they could reach a wider audience. chengcheng always gives her credit on these songs and a lot of their female fans look up to her. she likes to joke and say they ruined her expectation for men and that’s why she likes girls but she’s been gay for as long as she could remember, just kept it to herself. she loves the boys like her brothers and is grateful she found friends she can be herself with. since she’s the youngest they see her as a younger sister and are very protective over her. as an ex math major she’s also in charge of their finances.
  • wang haoyu — benben 笨笨 — 23 — drummer of youngblood — benben isn’t the brightest guy around. the only reason he got into taoxia imperial academy is because his dad is a teacher. out of all he came from the most wealthy family but he also the least deserved to go to such a prestigious academy. he studied law and failed almost every class, though when it comes to knowing the law for the benefit of youngblood he suddenly remembers everything he has to. a lot of people called him stupid throughout his life so he made it his stage name to take power over the word but fans and youngblood just call him ben because he’s only half an idiot. it’s really astonishing how he can go from a total idiot that just wants to rage and make rocking music to an educated lawyer in training. it makes you question if he’s actually dumb or if it’s a facade. either way benben is the wild card of the band, down for anything he’s not supposed to do just for the hell of it. he picked up the drums while studying at the academy but was kicked out of the class for playing too loudly and recklessly, making him perfect for a band like youngblood. he’s great at making catchy hooks that are practically meaningless but sound really good. he’s also the most affectionate and a big fan of group hugs. — darren chen
  • liu jianming — shaojun 韶君 — 24 — guzheng player of youngblood — while chengcheng is more focused on the message conveyed in his music, shaojun is more concerned with the music itself. how the instruments and the harmonies come together to create beautiful melodies and make sure each instrument is in tune. he comes from a musical background, his mom is a theater performer and his dad owns an instrument store/repair shop. he was introduced to many instruments at a young age but studied math at taoxia imperial academy. he wasn’t interested in youngblood, he was doing well in the school band but their unique sound intrigued him. he was confident in his skills enough to use the stage name shaojun meaning music god. shaojun is a bit of a know it all, the stickler of the band that’s in it for the music. he likes the messages they send but doesn’t like getting in trouble or being arrested. out of all he’s the most cautious and makes sure their routes are carefully planned and anyone that helps them are paid in full so there’s no slip ups. but his parents play a big part in their success due to their knowledge of underground venues. — caesar wu
  • yao liangxiu — huoxin 火心 — 25 — shakuhachi player of youngblood — huoxin was an unmotivated archer that was amazing at what he did but unhappy. out of all the bandmates, chengcheng actually knew huoxin but they weren’t friends. huoxin was a good kid so him joining the band was unexpected. it was music that gave huoxin inspiration, not archery. he was tired of going through life unnoticed and wanted a change. he actually always looked up to chengcheng for standing out. even now he admires how influential he is and is just happy to be apart of it to see how he’s changing society and opening people eyes. youngblood is his family, he was an orphan and got mistreated at his orphanage so he never knew what family was. archery wasn’t something he did because he loved it was his way out of an abusive household. heixin is really shy, hesitant to do things on his own but youngblood brings him out of his shell. that’s why his stage name is huoxin, it means fire heart to show that youngblood brings out the passion in his heart. he’s happy to experience things he never would on his own even if it’s seen as rebellious. he helps with both the music and lyrics, he’s known for his deep lyrics and passionate shakuhachi playing. — Connor leong
OTHERS —
  • lord okeda tetsuya — tetsuya doesn’t like chengcheng because he’s a criminal that sticks his nose in places it doesn’t belong. he doesn’t know about his and mizuki’s relationship but has his suspicions that chengcheng has an informant in the government and is determined to get to the bottom of it.
  • captain shen ailin — chengcheng knows ailin, they studied together back at the academy as well did huoxin. huoxin and him were once friends until huoxin joined youngblood. chengcheng sees ailin as a sell out. he’ll be used as an example for generations, the poor kid that made it as a great soldier. but he’s 1 in a million. he thinks ailin is selling false hope to young soldiers killing themselves to be like him when it’ll never happen. everytime he gets the chance he makes fun of his relationship with the princess, calling them lovebirds.

Love, like a blossom
FULL NAME — okeda mizuki
BACKUP— ester yu & li jiaqi
AGE — 21
PERSONALITY —  having a strict father like lord okeda wasn’t easy on mizuki. she had a lot of expectations on her and with a high achieving older brother she was never seen as good enough. for so long she did everything she could to be the perfect daughter and listened to her parents diligently but all she got in return was complaint after complaint. she was compared to tetsuya a lot growing up and her abilities were looked down on because she was a girl. she was actually an amazing dancer and martial artist for her age but compared to her brother she was subpar.

in front of her parents mizuki is very obedient and respectful, a soft spoken girl that could do no wrong. but strict parents raise sneaky kids and that’s how mizuki turned out, she’s an expert at sneaking out and finding out information. since her reputation is squeaky clean no one will think twice if she has a question that isn’t much of her business. she’s nice and helpful to everyone, from the help to her trainees. a sweet and positive yet stubborn person, growing up in a competitive household she doesn’t give up on what she wants easily. there has to be a lot of evidence to convince her otherwise once she makes up her mind. though she keeps many of her thoughts to herself so she doesn’t get in trouble.

she hates feeling restricted, though she still goes through her regular routines of the day with no problem she can’t wait until the night comes when she can go into the city of fanghua on her own. as one of her closest and only friends, princess yong knows her for her big ideas, idealistic mindset, and mischievous ways. she’s constantly trying to get her to sneak out with her to no avail yet tells her the stories of her adventures. you’ll never guess what she’s going to say, growing up only being able to speak when spoken to when she’s around someone that’s open minded she gets excited to share her ideas. a creative mind stifled by a traditional family, an affectionate heart suppressed by cold surroundings, a young spirit hindered by responsibility. when she’s with chengcheng she feels like she can be herself. call her crazy but she wants to marry him, she wants to be the first known okeda to marry outside of the family.
RELATIONSHIP — mizuki started out as a big fan of youngblood. she liked their music when they were mainstream and continued to follow them afterwards too. she had a big crush on chengcheng that surpassed her love for all her ex boyfriends. during one of his shows he threw a rose at her and she almost passed out from excitement. usually after concerts fans linger a bit to talk to the band, chengcheng was good at remembering names and faces but mizuki wanted to stand out above all so she told him she has confidential information on the monarchy and their plans. he was intrigued so he brought her back to their hideout to learn more. just to get his attention she revealed that she was an okeda, they didn’t believe her at first but she told what she heard at a recent meeting. chengcheng played along but let her go thinking she’s just some nutty fan since it wouldn’t have been the first until what she said actually came true.

for a week he desperately searched for mizuki, afraid that he just lost a big asset. they ended up bumping into each other again in fanghua and sat for some lunch. he wanted to know more about what the government was planning so they could hold riots and mess up their plans. they met very often from there, mizuki told chengcheng any new information she heard and chengcheng used it all to his advantage to stop the government on their tracks. soon mizuki was almost always at chengcheng’s side. she became a secret informant for him, he knew of her crush on him and used that to turn her into a puppet on a string. whenever she started to feel a bit guilty he made her feel special, reminding her that he wouldn’t be able to do any of this without her. their first kiss happened because she was doubting herself, wondering if she was a bad daughter. it wasn’t because he liked her, he just knew it was the next step of affection he’d have to take to keep her.

but mizuki was really head over heels, she snuck out to see him and brought him expensive gifts. spending time with him was the best part of her day. even when she was having a bad day she immediately perked up from seeing him and tried to make him happy all the time too. the times he was down she’d give him a hug, kisses all over the face, and tell him how much he inspires her; everything he did she supported him. she sees more than fancheng the musician, she sees the chengcheng who puts so much pressure on himself to make a change. the bitter kid that never got over his fathers death and wants to make a difference. she notices how he looks when he sees a father and son looking happy, she knows it’s not something she can get rid of if she can help heal him she’ll be happy.

chengcheng is adamant that he doesn’t have feelings for mizuki but his band isn’t so sure anymore. they’ve been spending more time together than they have to, the way he comes back to their hideout all giddy has them raising their eyebrows. sometimes mizuki would be at their hideout cooking breakfast while chengcheng is back hugging her, a lot more skinship than he has to do. he’s definitely in denial but a big part of him is also scared to admit it.
A queen in her castle

The doors of the courtroom swing open with a heavy, metallic clang. The sounds echo off the intricate, glossy bloodwood carvings that vault into high arches at the edges of the room.

Framed from behind by a scarlet tapestry embroidered with yellow dragons, Empress Yong looks on stoically from her throne of gold and ivory. Beneath her, rows of Hangwei nobility kneel on cushions in neat rows, silently glowering at the sudden annoyance.

Two guards struggle to drag in a bound prisoner between them. The person squirms and struggles until
he is tossed to the ground, landing in a heap with a groan.

The guards kneel behind
him, bowing their heads deeply toward the empress.“Your Royal Brilliance,” one of the men says, “We found another of the… peculiars.” He indicates the prisoner with a nod of his head.

Empress Yong stands, the ornaments in her hair tinkling as she looks down from her platform. Her gaze passes over the
man, lingering on each feature carefully. “It would appear so,” she speaks without inflection. She sweeps a hand forward, an ornate, silky sleeve dragging against the ground.“You there, get up." She says, pointing to him. "Do you know why you are here today?”

“Well I am in a band, but I doubt your men manhandled me as such because you needed some entertainment. Either way I usually charge for my services, though since you’re prettier in person I’m willing to give you a discount,” he dusted off his hanfu and stared back at the empress with a rebellious smirk, head not even lowered the slightest to show respect.

The empress narrows her eyes. “I want your name,” she snaps.

“Singer Fan is the proper way to address me, but only the older generations would bother with such a boring title. I mostly go by Fancheng, your royal heinessness~” he bows sarcastically, obviously not taking the situation as seriously as he should.

The Empress looks up briefly to cast her eyes around the court. When they return to the prisoner, she smiles. "Ah so you’re the famous Fancheng thats been patronizing my men and inciting chaos amongst the youth. We’ve heard the stories, my friend. First, it was the Princess- now others of your kind are popping out of the ground like weeds. You have caused us quite a headache.” She leans closer, lowering her voice. “What is it you ‘peculiars’ want?”

“Equality, respect, opportunity and basic human rights just to name a few. You treat people like second class citizens, feed them nothing but high hopes and dreams. Use them until you can’t anymore and leave them to fend for themselves like they didn’t dedicate their lives to making Hangwei a better place,” he says calmly like his observationsS are common knowledge. He leans forward and lowers his voice mimicking her movements, “you call it inciting chaos but I call it opening their eyes to the lies you’re feeding them.” He moves back to his original position looking at her innocently, “but either way it’s just music, no? Up to your own interpretation, I just put words and chords together after all.”

The Empress straightens again, her posture regal. Her smile is bitter and emotionless. “I see. However, do you truly expect me to let one with your abilities run amok and sink our great nation into chaos? The four corners of the world are fighting neck-and-neck to even have a glimpse of the likes of you.” She shakes her head. “No, I cannot allow it. Even the Princess herself will be dealt with in light of this situation.”

He shrugs, “do what you must, but peoples eyes are open now. They won’t stop until a change is made. I suggest starting with lowering taxes,” his signature smirk snuck its way on his face again as he teased the empress.

With a tight expression, the Empress gestures once again, and the two guards haul the prisoner back onto his feet.

“Take
him away until we come to a further conclusion here,” she says, a flick of her eyes motioning to the patiently-waiting nobles. "Dismissed." She waves them away with her hand, the guards grunting with effort as they drag the prisoner back through the crowded room and away from sight.

At her command Chengcheng laid on the floor letting all his body weight go, enjoying the sight of the guards struggling to get him on his feet and hearing them curse at him under their breath. Its obvious that it’s not his first run in with the guards. On his way out he locks eyes with the empress and gives her a wink making her blood boil.

THE FINALE
QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, CONCERNS? — I have no idea if this make sense but I had a lot of fun writing this, he is in your hands now so feel free to make him some kind of secretly corrupt dude if you want. I hope it's okay to give Tetsuya a sister? I left their relationship pretty broad so you can play around with it. Anyways, I'm looking forward to the story, I hope he gets picked!
SCENE SUGGESTIONS —
— their concert gets raided by authorities but their fans help them get away
— rare moments of chengcheng losing his temper
