personality.

positive; determined, intelligent, observant, outgoing, optimistic, sympathetic, confident
neutral; spontaneous, impulsive, honest, fun loving
negative; short tempered, calculating, mischievous, spoiled, insecure

bang hongwon is your typical rich jerk, he grew up spoiled and it showed. he does what he wants without any regard for other people. he tends to give a sarcastic reply to things and has the perfect amount of bluntness to call him rude. he’s so confident that he’d date his own reflection if he could. when he’s mad all he’ll breaks loose and he throws the tantrum of the century, taking anyone in his way down with him. this is how most people view him, although some of it is true that is how he comes off, it isn’t totally correct.

hongwon’s “” façade stemmed from him having to act out to get attention from his father, after a while it just stuck since it was the hongwon everyone already knew him as. no one ever expected him to be good or do well so why should he. since he was young hongwon was always running around somewhere doing whatever he wanted. still today if he wants to do something then he’ll do it, there are very few people that can convince him otherwise. he’s used to getting what he wants, he has enough money to so there’s no reason for him not to. he isn’t a fan of routine, it makes him feel trapped. if he’s stuck in the same thing for too long he’d start to deviate from his schedule because he craves change. his decisions are usually impulsive and based off how he feels. hongwon’s emotions come in waves because of his temper, when he’s fine he’s completely fine but when the feels hit they hit hard. he never knows how to deal with such intense feelings so when he’s upset in anyway his impulse is prone to worsen which is when he’ll engage in risky behavior. he’s known for having meltdowns to staff then apologizing the next day with an expensive gift or a sudden bonus. working for him is a pain but the staff has to admit that the gifts and bonuses are nice.

many people underestimate hongwon because he isn’t the type to prove himself to others. he doesn’t have to show that he’s the smartest person in the room or brag about his accomplishments. he only ever wanted approval from his father and the people he cares about in his inner circle, he doesn’t care about what anyone else thinks about him. but if those in his inner circle are disappointed then he’ll try to make them happy. he’s really selective with who he pours his energy to, frankly most people call him an because he just doesn’t care about them so he doesn’t see the need in acting all friendly and fake. not many people know but hongwon is actually really observant, he notices and remembers the little things about people. it makes him such a good friend because he knows exactly what to do to make his friends happy and what they like. but his enemies hate him for it because he also knows what makes them tick. that’s also how he can be so good at pranks and never get caught, he’s mischievous and creative. if he really put his mind to it he’d never get caught for any of the little crimes he did when he was younger, he purposely got caught so he could get in trouble.

hongwon isn’t shy to talk to anyone, why should he, he’s bang hongwon and it’s not like he cares about total strangers anyways. they should be happy that he’s talking to them. if people take away their prejudices against him they’ll see that he’s a fun guy. his sarcasm tends to be on the funnier side, people mistake it because they don’t like him and already have a perceived notion about him. he’s an honest person and sometimes can be too honest, but it’s not like he’s out here calling people ugly to their face. he at least has a conscious. the only person he’s really negative with is himself, he wasn’t always like that though. he was actually confident once upon a time but his relationship with his dad really hurt that, he didn’t take his dads harsh words seriously until he stopped talking to him. that’s when he thought that maybe his dad did mean it when he called him a burden and a waste of space, it wasn’t just blind anger. since then he didn’t put much effort into anything because he just constantly had in his head that he’s a burden and a waste of space. but with other people he’s optimistic and encourages them to do whatever their heart desires, especially his friends. if it makes them happy then he’ll support them wholeheartedly. he’s always been a sympathetic person, he would be the shoulder to lean on for his friends because he didn’t like seeing them upset but when it came to himself he’d hide his troubles.

section two!
background.

tw: mentions of abuse, drugs, death, petty crime

being born into one of korea’s most powerful chaebols with over 30 subsidiaries, bangyoun group, you’d think that hongwon had an amazing childhood. but instead he was quite a troubled kid, despite growing up in a luxurious top floor apartment in eden. his dad had a motto, “give the kid whatever he wants so he doesn’t cause trouble.” hongwon was raised by the plethora of helpers his dad hired around the house. he was a little brat, he barely listened and ran around doing whatever he wanted. his caregivers didn’t care about him, they only looked after him because it was their job. whenever he grew an attachment to one of them, they left for whatever reason and a new person came in. hongwon often felt alone growing up due to this. his dad was also barely home, he often traveled and the few times he saw his father was when he had to make an appearance at an elite party. he had to include seeing his son into his schedule and he usually wasn’t a priority. his dad came back every few months to have a rushed formal dinner with hongwon surrounded by security and his various assistants. everytime they talked about the same thing, hongwon’s grades, various activities, and the family business. hongwon always had a packed schedule, he went from school to piano lessons to golf lessons to taekwondo to tutoring. but none of that could replace his dad, the only person he really wanted attention from.

after a while hongwon learned that acting out was the only way to get that. whenever hongwon misbehaved, his dad gave him a call and that was the highlight of hongwon’s day even if he was just screaming on the other line. when he was younger the things he did were small, he’d interrupt the class at school or refuse to play the piano at his lessons. his father eventually stopped calling over it because it wasn’t serious, instead he instructed whoever was taking care of hongwon at the time to deal with it. but when he hit his rebellious pre teens his actions got a lot worse. he’d steal a go cart at the country club and go for a wild ride with his friends or steal snacks from a store because he didn’t feel like taking his wallet out his backpack. this is when the run ins with the cops started, he was young so they just arrested him until someone came to pick him up and let him go. but these incidents made hongwon’s father livid because he had a reputation to keep. throwing a fit behind closed doors and screaming at the help was fine but outside he had to act proper. when it got out of control, hongwon’s father would call him to his office or fly in from wherever he was and beat the crap out of hongwon. it hurt but if it got his dad to be around more often, any attention was better than no attention. as he got older his actions only got worse, especially when alcohol started to get involved. he got arrested multiple times for getting into fights at bars and stealing things he knows he can easily afford just because or just causing trouble in general. each time hongwon’s record remained clean because of his fathers connections yet he walked out from his dads office with a bunch of bruises and a smile on his face.

hongwon’s grades were terrible too, it only got worse as time went on. by his first year of highschool he was barely passing anything and skipped school like crazy. even all the tutors in the world couldn’t help him, he knew the work he just didn’t apply himself. he’d put the wrong answers in on purpose because he knew his dad would ask about his grades and their talks were always longer when his grades were bad. when he wasn’t at school he was spending time with his friends and random girls, smoking at karaoke rooms and drinking at night. hongwon was known for being a player, with his money he could get any girl he wanted. he didn’t take any of them seriously until he started dating baram at 16. but his actions caused him his relationship with baram and his father. those parties were the only time hongwon really tried to behave, well behaving to hongwon is being mischievous and not drawing too much attention to himself. surprisingly hongwon’s reputation wasn’t that bad yet, his dad kept his wrongdoings sealed. if anything only the people from his school knew him as a trouble maker since he skipped so often and got bad grades, baram’s family wasn’t fond of him either but his dads business partners had no idea. since there were a lot of important people he tried not to cause too much trouble. he’d just play little pranks on the servers and older people without getting caught. when his dad went up to talk he’d clap extra loud and cheer for him like he was at a concert. it’ll get him a slap on the back of the head but he liked messing with his dad in little ways as such.

the day he caused a scene at one of those important parties was the last day he saw his dad. like any rich kid teen, he hated those parties. it was the last thing he wanted to go to, mostly because he had to see baram for the first time in a month. to deal with it hongwon got drunk before the party to get him through a night full of condescending smiles and haughty personalities. when he arrived he was already on cloud 9. the classical music that played in the background was enough to get him hype and dancing while sipping on the wine that the waiters were serving. his loud laugh could be heard half way across the room as he sparked conversation with anyone close enough to talk to him. his dad kept giving him glares and pinches to his side when he spoke out of turn but he was too far gone to take the hint. to onlookers it seemed like the fight started out of nowhere, hongwon was rowdy all day so it must’ve been his fault. but hongwon and youngchan had a long history of beef, it was only a matter of time until they would actually fight about it. youngchan had a long time crush on baram and never seemed to take a hint when she didn’t want to talk to him. seeing them talk already pissed him off but it was what he said as he walked by hongwon that caused him to swing first. “look at you, drunk by 7? baram never deserved scum like you. no matter how rich you are you’re still trash, no wonder your own father can’t stand you.” it was impressive actually, hongwon knocked him out cold after one punch to the jaw but it caused a big scene and hongwon’s father was not having it. that was an important night because hongwon’s father had potential business partners at that party, but hongwon’s actions caused them not to seal the deal. rumors spread about what happened, people tied it to hongwon and youngchan’s family feud and said that hongwon had a drinking problem. youngchan got all the sympathy since he was the top student that could never do any wrong while hongwon’s reputation was ruined.

soon after hongwon got sent to a boarding school in the United States to continue his studies for junior year and senior year of highschool. he didn’t hear from his dad for years after that. their last encounter was his dad beating the crap out of him in the living room in front of all the staff in charge of him later that night of the party. screaming about how he’s always been a burden and screaming at the staff for not preventing him from drinking. all the staff just stood there with their heads down while hongwon coughed up blood on the floor. his father fired every single one of them, and the next day hongwon was on a flight to America and basically disappeared. his social media was taken down, he changed his number and phone, he lost contact with everyone he knew in korea. at first hongwon didn’t take it seriously, he knew if he acted out his dad would come back but he was wrong. no matter how much he caused trouble, his dad never showed up. it was always someone new coming to represent his father instead. he sent his dad many letters and texts that remained unanswered. hongwon felt hopeless and abandoned, he had no one to turn to or lean on. as a result he did what he always did, be the trouble maker he was known as being.

hongwon lost respect for his father after that, hongwon felt as if he didn’t matter to his father and it silently killed him inside. during the summers he’d spend time going on vacation with his new friends, not once did he visit Korea again because his father made it clear that he didn’t want him there. while hongwon saw all his friends families fly in from all over the world to see them graduate, hongwon was the only one with no one there. instead of being upset about it he drank until he could barely walk at a party later that day. hongwon got into yale university with the help of his fathers connections as a business major and landed himself in a fraternity that fed his already messy habit of partying and helped him get into drugs. every weekend he partied and hooked up with sorority girls and did it all again the next weekend. his grades were terrible and he barely learned anything during his two years at Yale. but he was happy there, his fraternity were like his family and it was nice being somewhere he felt like he belonged that didn’t judge him. hongwon still thought about his friends back in korea and his father, but he suppressed it. it’s been 4 years anyways, they must’ve forgot about him and it’s probably better for everyone if he wasn’t there. but in the summer, his dad suffered a and passed away. as the sole heir to the bangyoun group, he had no choice but to return to Korea and take responsibility as the new ceo of bangyoun group. can he step up handle all the responsibilities or will he crumble under all the pressure and ruthless competition causing bangyoun group to collapse in the process?

relationships

bang daeseok | tower
jo sung ah | 55 (deseased) | father |

hongwon has a complicated relationship with his father, no matter how much he wants to hate his father he can’t. hongwon has spent all of his life trying to get his dads attention and the lack of it really shaped him as a person. he has a lot of resentment towards his father, he knows that if his dad was more present he wouldn’t be so ed up.

however, daeseok didn’t come from a great childhood himself, he too had an abusive father. the only difference being that his mom was around to give him some love. but in the old days women didn’t have much of a say so his dad had the final word and his opinion mattered the most. daeseok spent his life trying to impress his father as the only child and sole heir.

he didn’t know how to love so he couldn’t keep a woman, he was reluctant to open up. he originally didn’t want a child because he was afraid of being a bad dad but he fell in love and had hongwon. he wanted to change the family cycle and be a good dad but when hongwon’s mother was gone he drowned himself in work instead. he wishes he could’ve been a better father but looking at hongwon just reminded him of himself and how much he acted out for attention as a teen. beating hongwon was like beating up his past self over and over again. he felt bad for how he handled the fight situation, he just didn’t know what to do and after a while pride got in the way. he showed his love by making sure his account always had money and getting him into yale.

his passing was unexpected, he was told he had high blood pressure from overworking and took medication for it for years. the stress only got worse with hongwon gone, the opposite affect that you’d think it would have. he ended up passing away from a just like his father did. in the end he lived a lonely and unhappy life no matter how much money he had.

hongwon thinks his father died hating him but daeseok never hated his son. he might’ve said things he regretted but he was one of the only people he cared for. daeseok kept every report card, school photo, drawing and letter that hongwon has ever made for him even the ones he sent him from boarding school. it’s all in a locked cabinet in his office.

kwon seonju | tower
mingi | 21 | best friend |

seonju is hongwon’s best friend and partner in crime. he’s super loyal and will tag along in anything that hongwon needs him to because that’s his bro. he’s not the smartest guy around but he’s always down for a good time and you gotta love him. hongwon tells seonju everything. he’s one of the few people that knows the real hongwon, he was there for him through every moment in his life. he knows why he’s the way he is and everything that he went through with baram and how he actually feels about her.

they stopped talking for a few years when hongwon was gone but as soon as he got back that was the first person he looked for and their relationship continued right where it left off like nothing happened. seonju was the one to fill him in on everything that happened after he was gone. seonju was actually worried that hongwon would make new friends that would replace him but no one could ever replace seonju in hongwon’s heart. seonju really cares for him and wants to see him do well but he has a habit of also being an enabler because he wants to see hongwon happy. he can’t say no to his best friend and won’t turn down a chance to drink and party anyways.
lee youngchan | tower
yunho | 21 | enemies |

youngchan and hongwon’s feud goes way back to before they were even born. soyi group and bangyoun group have been rivals for years. their grandfathers used to be best friends and business partners, they helped each other rise in ranks to become some of the most successful chaebols. but for whatever reasons (hongwon could never stay interested in the story long enough to remember why they had a falling out | read: you can decide) they became rivals instead and competed with everything. many of their subsidiaries are rival companies and the feud spread to their families as well. daeseok often got compared to and pinned against youngchan’s father, they grew to hate each other despite not having any actual issues with each other. the same ended up happening to youngchan and hongwon, daeseok would compare hongwon to youngchan all the time and youngchan’s parents made sure he was constantly at the top of his class and outperformed hongwon in anyway possible.

baram only added onto their feud. both boys liked her from a young age and youngchan was constantly trying to impress her, even though she was barely ever impressed. he was like every other boy in their small community, full of himself and condescending. seeing hongwon win her heart only angered him more and he never gave up on pursuing her even during their relationship. hongwon and youngchan can’t be in the same room without glaring at each other and bickering. just seeing his preppy little face makes hongwon’s blood boil. when he left Korea he was afraid that baram would date him, he honestly had a few nightmares about it.
do taerin | village
park shin hye | 32 | dad's assistant |

taerin is hongwon’s assistant. she’s persistent and very good at her job. ever since he came back to Korea she has been in charge of following daeseok’s wishes and making sure hongwon completes all his responsibilities. it didn’t sound easy to begin with but she didn’t think she would be working overtime contacting pr firms and lawyers to try and clear his name every two seconds. taerin started working for daeseok as his assistant a few months after hongwon left. she never met him before the funeral but she’s heard about him from the staff back at the office and saw a few family photos before.
jang junoh | village
sung dong il | 60 | driver |

junoh has worked as the driver for the bang family for over 25 years and has been hongwon’s driver since he was a newborn. he’s a man of few words but knows the ins and outs of the bang family because he hears all their conversations. he’s very loyal though and never speaks out of turn, he has a family of his own and is grateful to the bang family for giving him a job for so long. when hongwon is angry junoh would be his ear to listen during the car ride and always take his side like any good driver should. he knows all hongwon’s favorite songs and plays whatever playlist hongwon feels like listening to that day. early morning or late at night, junoh is on call to pick up hongwon whenever he needs him, especially when his car privileges are taken away.
han sooyoung | village
jang hyejin | 46 | maid |

she is hongwon’s maid and chef, she worked as the maid for only a year before hongwon left to america. she cleans his house, does his laundry, buys the groceries, takes care of his dog, cooks his meals and makes sure he wakes up on time to follow his schedules. his life and his house would be a huge mess without her, thanks to her he doesn’t have to deal with the annoyingly unavoidable parts of life like doing the dishes. she’s not a live in maid so she usually leaves after she cleans up after dinner. when he doesn’t feel like eating dinner at home he lets her leave early. she’s very specific when she cleans because she knows that if one thing is out of place, hongwon will throw a fit over it when he’s in a bad mood. she just sees him as a troubled kid and honestly feels bad for him.
kim baram | tower
nagyung | 21 | ex girlfriend |

baram is known as eden's princess, a kind girl that can't do no wrong. she was the top of her class in highschool, representing the student body president and is now in college as a political science major hoping to make her mark as a woman in politics. she's making sure her reputation stays squaky clean for when she runs for office someday. her parents are very proud of what she's become and so is she. besides the sighs after long days full of smiles and her need to question things she doesn't really have a fake bone in her body unlike a lot of the people in eden.

hongwon has known baram for years before they started dating. he remembers the first day he laid eyes on her like it was yesterday, it was at one of the many parties his father had. it was still early and guests were still arriving, hongwon was running around the venue getting chased by his fathers then assistant who was trying to get him to sit down. baram was walking in with her parents and when hongwon landed his eyes on her it’s like time slowed down and she was walking in slow motion. he stared at her so much that he forgot to look where he was going when he was running. he ended up crashing into a server holding a tray of wine glasses, hongwon fell right on his and the server dropped the tray on the floor. the glasses shattered and as hongwon got up he placed his hand on a piece of glass cutting his palm. his dads assistant dragged him away to clean his wound and the whole time hongwon’s eyes never left baram. it wasn’t until she was out of sight that he started crying because he realized he cut his hand and the pain set in. hongwon had a crush on her from that moment on.

they remained acquaintances for a long time, they only knew of each other and didn’t go further than small talk or a wave. it was probably nothing to baram but to hongwon, he remembered all those little moments they had. hongwon wanted a reason to talk to her but had no idea where to start so seonju helped him come up with a really dumb plan now that he thinks about it during their final year of middle school. hongwon skipped last period and waited for baram to get out of school, when he saw her walk out the building he walked in her direction and bumped into her making him drop his books. like he thought she would she helped him picked it up and recognized him, they had small talk and she asked why he was at her school. he didn’t know what to say so he said he was waiting for his girlfriend and gave the most generic name ever. before she could move on he asked her if she wanted to wait with him at a cafe because he remembered that his “girlfriend” had an after school program for an hour. since she already knew him she saw no harm in doing so.

that was the first time they actually had a conversation that lasted more than five minutes and they vibed really well. they exchanged numbers and started texting, baram asked about his nonexistent girlfriend and wanted to meet her but hongwon came up with excuses and eventually said that they broke up because of their busy schedules. with his fake girlfriend out of the picture, hongwon was able to hang out with baram more often and she eventually started to like him too. he was shy and clumsy around her, completely different from how anyone else would describe him so she made the first move by holding his hand. he asked her out on the Ferris wheel at lotte world and their first kiss was the same day when he dropped her home.

when they started dating it was like a fairytale. they spent a lot of time together like any couple in love and did all the cute cheesy things any highschool couple would do. they didn’t go to the same school so hongwon would skip school to see her during her lunch time because he missed her. if she said she liked something he got it for her no matter the price. he made her heart flutter by his actions. his grades got better when he was dating her too because they would study together and he liked seeing how happy she was for him when he did well on a test. but after a while it all started to seem surface level. whenever baram would open up and talk about her feelings, hongwon wouldn’t know how to respond. he didn’t offer her much emotional support because he didn’t know how. when she asked him about his past he was reluctant to open up. she just didn’t understand him, she didn’t get why he caused trouble for no reason and why he didn’t tell her things. this caused them to argue more often, well to baram it was arguing, hongwon would just sit there and listen and beg to change the subject and nothing would be resolved. her being mad at him only frustrated him more and caused him to act out again. they always had the same cycle, they would fight, hongwon would act out then makeup for it by doing something romantic and baram forgave him then they’d start again at square one. it was toxic but they didn’t want to let each other go. hongwon thought that if he told her his issues she’d leave because everyone always leaves him. he really loved her but he was scared, he got jealous easily and was possessive when it came to her. anytime he saw a guy even talk to baram he was ready to fight them because he loved her and didn’t want anyone to take her away. there were so many things that he felt and wanted to say but he couldn’t put it into words. even though they dated for a year he never once said he loved her despite knowing in his heart that he did for a long time.

hongwon was like a puppy, it’s a well deserved nickname. the hongwon with baram is different from the hongwon with everyone else. he’s so much more gentle and caring. people say that the honeymoon phase only lasts a few months at most, but their whole relationship whenever hongwon looked at baram it was like she was the only person in the room. he might as well have had hearts in his eyes. baram doesn’t know the power she had over him. everytime they were together he had to have one part of him touching her. whether it was a hand on her thigh or their feet touching, he couldn’t help himself it made him feel at ease. he always wanted to be clinging onto her and hugging her, there were a few times when they were around her parents or other important people when she had to casually remove his hand from her waist. he slept better with her cuddling him too. there’s just something about the way she runs her fingers through his hair that instantly knocks him out.

she was able to talk about anything with him without being judged because no matter what she said or what flaws she had she was still perfect to him. when she felt insecure he’d tell her how beautiful she was and make her feel secure again. he knows all her little imperfections and those were the things he liked most because only he knew them. they had weird inside jokes and made each other laugh, baram could look like a hot mess around him and he still thought she looked beautiful. he was more spontaneous than she was and would drag her away from all her responsibilities to do something fun or just for the heck of getting away from it all. she always complained at first but those moments did give her a sense of relief. whenever he was around her he was happy, he barely showed the sad or mad side of himself no matter what he had going on. whenever they talked he had a tendency to throw in a little dirty joke like any teenage boy would, and it would get him a smack on the arm everytime.

he was really possessive over her, he didn’t want to fight in front of her but if he was pushed far enough he was willing. he wouldn’t stop her from seeing her friends, even if it was a boy because he didn’t want her to miss out of anything but he would whine about it if it was a guy though and she would cup his cheeks and reassure him that she’s all his. whenever hongwon tagged along he would act intimidating to whatever guy friend joined, but if it was just girls then hongwon was fine as long as he was next to baram. he didn’t care what they did, he was happy just to be with her. even the torturous hours of shopping they did didn’t bother him, he was good with clash of the titans and pubg kept him occupied.

but he was still always on the lookout for anyone trying to steal his girl. just seeing someone look at her too hard or attempt to flirt with her made him clench his fist and curse under his breath. but her thumb caressing his hand that was intertwined with hers was enough of a sign to tell him don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere. he listened to her more than anyone else and did all that he could to try and make her happy. she had a way of calming him down, just looking into her eyes and feeling her touch made him feel more at ease because she was more important than whatever he was mad about.

those times that he ignored her and couldn’t express himself he really hated himself for it. he hated seeing her cry and started fights just to get beat up because he deserved it for making her upset. he didn’t have the guts to physically hurt himself so he got other people to do it instead. since he at expressing himself he’d send her songs that match how he felt. she didn’t know that he sent those songs for that reason though, she just thought he was recommending music and assumed he had bad timing for sending music when she was upset.

baram’s parents and friends didn’t like hongwon though, they saw how worried she got whenever he didn’t answer her and how sad she got when they fought. but one thing she’d always say is that he treated her well. hongwon never got drunk or high around baram, he refused to see her when he had bruises and cuts on his face. he didn’t want her to see that side of him but to her it just seemed like he ignored her, because of all these issues baram broke up with him. she felt that he didn’t really care about her and her friends convinced her that he was cheating even though he never once did. he was dodging her the two weeks before she broke up with him, he had a black eye from his dad and didn’t want her to see it. since he wouldn’t see her they broke up over the phone, baram gave him a long speech and he just accepted it. he didn’t fight it or try to make her change her mind because he knew he was a mess and she’d probably be better off without him.

they didn’t see each other or talk for a month, hongwon was a mess. he got arrested more than usual and drank more too. the next time they saw each other was at his dads party, he needed something to get him through the day and baram could tell he was out of it. she couldn’t pin point why though. they didn’t talk at all that day, she just saw him attach youngchan and get dragged away. her friends and parents made comments that it was good she broke up with him and it would make her look bad if they were still together. after he left Korea they both moved on with their lives, well at least hongwon tried to. she was on a downward spiral without her and his dad and his best friend. in America he went wild and tried all types of substances, drinks, anything to get his mind off of feeling like an unwanted waste of space. he hooked up with more girls than he can remember but didn’t take any of them seriously. the whole time he remained single, baram was the first and only love he ever had. he never forgot about her. he just looked at their picture that he had hidden in his wallet and hoped that she was happy and doing well. the last thing he ever thought was that he’d go back to Korea and see her again.
