kang dayeon was born in an upper class family, with a pair of conventional parents and an overprotective twin brother, kang hajoon. most of her childhood and teenage era was made up of her being a rebellious pain in the , doing whatever it took to annoy her parents. now that she looked back, it was probably just her immature tactics of getting their attention as her parents were constantly busy with work. as a kid, dayeon's athletic achievements always made her parents proud, securing champions at all times, which was her golden pass of messing around the campus, especially enrolled in prestigious private academies. she never entered the classroom without being on the verge of being late, and began dying her hair to different shades of brown since fifteen. climbing trees, escaping to medical rooms during maths lessons and even skipping classes were nothing strange to kang dayeon. after all, her parents and brother would always save her and back her up. what is life without some excitement without bearing any responsibilites?
the protocol has become routine - she messed up, then her brother would try to fix things, or her parents would just talk (or bribe) the authorities out of penalising her, lastly ensuring her came back home unharmed. it got worse when she met her first boyfriend in high school. she truly fell for him, who was dubbed the untamable, the bad boy, among the richer kids. he caught her attention, and not so long after, they got together. but he wasn't called the untamable without a reason - dayeon soon caught him cheating with her best friend a few months later. dayeon was broken and hurt badly. on top of entering puberty, dayeon only became more rebellious and mean which earned herself the nickname of "psycho" by her highschool and university classmates. these were all her revenge on society for being betrayed and trying to heal her wound behind the bad girl pretense. since then, she feared nothing. everything could easily become a toy of hers, just because she was kang dayeon. she became the truly bad kid, picking on different people simply out of boredom because her attention and interest for the world no longer exist.

there is not a day dayeon ever stayed apart from her twin brother for more than a few miles. they always attended the same school, even university. hajoon is the only person who would never abandon her despite all her antics. he always tolerates her behaviours and they could not imagine being separated. after all, they are connected and they could tell how each other feel without saying out loud. they would do anything for each other, and no one could really stand between the siblings. her brother is the person she relied on the most. if it wasn't for her brother, dayeon wouldn't be able to recover to her current state from the breakup in high school. at some point through university, dayeon has slowly realised that the two couldn't stick together forever. and this is specifically in regards to the event that hajoon got a boyfriend, which is why dayeon had to find a date in the very first place. still, being twins and being in the same batch, they share many mutual friends and hang out very frequently as each other's biggest supporter.

yoon daeyoung and oh jiyoung, the ex-boyfriend and the ex-best friend that could not be mentioned in front of dayeon. oh jiyoung has been dayeon's best friend since elementary school growing up as neighbours, but still she sabotaged her without a doubt. till now, dayeon still regret thinking so naively that a bad boy would change for her. yoon daeyoung had good times with her, she was happy, until he betrayed her and hurt her even more with the other person she trusted most on the world. she never met them after high school and blocked all ways of contact with both of them. she refuses to know any updates about them from her other high school friends. all she knew was that they broke up due to long distance, yoon daeyoung being in seoul and oh jiyoung being in busan.

dayeon doesn't really like byeol, to be honest. byeol seems to her too much of a goody-two-shoe, and too quiet around dayeon that she sees her as a bore. it is the very occasional moments when byeol leaves sarcastic comments on her brother or her closer friends does dayeon notice byeol for a bit. dayeon could tell that byeol is not showing too much of her real self, not that dayeon cares, it's just that sometimes she wonders. both having a twin brother, they do talk about their siblings and understand the feelings of being a twin, but that's all they talk about when they're alone.

dayeon is actually seen with the beauty quite often outside the dorm, especially during social events around the campus. though the beauty is not the biggest fan of dayeon's personality, they would still get some coffee once in awhile before going back to the dorm together after classes. though, it is true that some parts of dayeon only gets close and hangs out with the beauty for her repuatation and popularity.

the nerd is so quiet and shy that sometimes dayeon forgets about her existence around the dorm. however, knowing that the nerd is the girlfriend of a playboy gets dayeon curious about the girl that barely speaks to her. however, dayeon could tell that the nerd is one of the few that doesn't hate her guts and doesn't shower her with fake compliments so dayeon wouldn't decline spending some time with her.

while dayeon found the mother quite annoying sometimes with all the nagging especially when she's younger than dayeon, dayeon knows she means well and truly cares about all the dormmates. however, that has been exactly the factor keeping dayeon to steer away from connecting too much with the mother, fearing that she'll build true bonds and risk being betrayed.
THE MOTHER
dayeon has the most conflict with the fighter among the rest of the dormmates. the fighter would not hide her anger towards dayeon's irresponsible behaviours and publicly call her out for being rude and mean. dayeon couldn't be much bothered, but this made dayeon interacts the most with the fighter, ironically. somehow, the two of them are quite similar and maybe that's the reason they couldn't get along. then again, dayeon doesn't get along with much people without the fake compliments.

the talkative is probably the closest one of dayeon among the dorm due to her outgoing and friendly personality. sometimes the talkative could be a bit overwhelming, but dayeon enjoys listening to some of her fun stories. in addition, dayeon could use the talkative's mouth to spread stuff she wanted people to know. the talkative is probably the only one who would follow dayeon around doing her crazy antics so she's a decent companion.

the mysterious is another dormmate that dayeon sometimes forgets about with her weirdly low existence around her life. the mysterious clearly carries a lot of secrets that dayeon does not really have the urge to find out if she does not hope to reveal to the rest. but dayeon respects her for staying true to herself and at some point they both found themselves agreeing on that people is mostly nasty.
THE MYSTERIOUS
park chul is this date her parents paid to go to the prom with her - well, paid is a big word - dayeon's parents offered him an internship at the law firm in exchange of being dayeon's date. chul is actually in the same class as hajoon, both studying political science. dayeon might have met him a few times waiting for her brother's class to be over, but never really properly registered him.
"hiring" a prom date was actually dayeon's idea. she knew she wouldn't have the time to interview and scout for a perfect date that she feels confident to go to prom with, and her brother has become unavailable recently. so by pulling a few strings, her parents actually managed to find her a decent date on such short notice. chul is quite shy, but very good looking and is a high achiever. chul is nice guy, dayeon wouldn't deny, but they both know that nothing will go further beyond than that. prom is, after all, just another social event for dayeon to flaunt and end her university era with a perfect night.
at least, that was what she has been thinking so until she met choi soobin.

dayeon is most definitely not the teacher's favourite kid based on her usual attitude. she treats herself like a customer at school, so do not expect much from her. additionally, she doesn't need the professors' favoritism to get golden pass around the campus with her family background and her extra-curricular attainments. she's the type of student who likes to challenge the professors with too much sarcasm perhaps (in her defense, to lighten up the mood a bit) and those who skip classes from time to time because she just couldn't get up for that 10am boring lecture after the crazy party weekend (usually the monday ones). truthfully speaking, dayeon's not everyone's favourite classmate to work with because of her unpredictable behaviours. still, there are a certain amount of students who are willing to stay close with her for her connections and her social status. dayeon herself does not really care about grades as long as she gets something above 60% or a b-. outside classes, dayeon spends most of her free time either at sports trainings or parties.

in general, dayeon does not have the best relationship with her dormmates mostly due to her obnoxious personality and her reluctance in building genuine bonds with people. however, one would be surprised at how involved dayeon could be when one of her dormmates got into troubles despite saying all these ruthless words like a tsundere.
though dayeon does spend a significant time doing sports and socialising, some would be surprised to see dayeon at the dorm more often than expected. sure, she enjoys shopping and having fun after classes but let's not forget the fact that she is not that into people, in general. dayeon interacts with the other girls sometimes, usually giving them free stuff that she doesn't want or ing about someone on the campus. despite not being there that often, you could always spot dayeon's stuff around. also, she is very vocal about opinions so she's undoubtedly the hard one to handle among the dorm. dayeon emphasises how she prefers people to call her out directly instead of talking behind her, so she is probably the one got involved in the most conflicts as well. for example, dayeon would always suggest paying someone to clean the dorm instead of doing the cleaning themselves, and not everyone would like her ideas. when alone in her room, dayeon doesn't really do much stuff. she would binge-watch netflix and do online shoppings, occasionally reading some crime fictions to stimulate her brain.
LIFE OUTSIDE OF YEONG-UNG
outside school, dayeon is usually attending social galas with her family or spending quality time with her brother. you might even see dayeon at clubs in itaewon or hongdae, just having fun and fooling around with some strangers after interrupting their beer pong. alternatively, dayeon might just be doing some of her unpredictable challenges such as crashing a diplomat's party, or auditioning as a trainee, or doing bungee jump in the middle of nowhere.

in a nutshell
the only child of professor choi from the economics department of yeongung, choi soobin is a quick-witted and blunt person who is all about logics and facts. with grades slightly above the average, soobin is known as one of the visuals of his department but he always keeps things lowkey and subtle. he is not really into socialising and prefers hanging out with his few close friends in the same class. and he's not very friendly or nice to people, he likes to call this a screening progress, so that he gets to keep those with real potentials of being friends with him, so honestly, most girls just prefer to appreciate his face and not much would approach him, which saves him much troubles. however, when you've made it to his lists of people he likes hanging out with, he is your most loyal friend, despite looking like he doesn't give a most of the time. being with soobin, it is comfortable and even just chilling with him is a great experience.
love story
now how they met is quite debatable among the two of them, because clearly they have very different idea of a first meeting. though they probably have crossed paths several times before, especially with soobin's father being a professor in the economics department, but the following is the first meeting they both remembered as. soobin remembered seeing dayeon for the very first time in their third year of uni at the engineering building, who was making a very loud noise with her weird purple heels. she was also wearing a gigantic red ribbon on her head - almost like a pillow (he would like to highlight the word "gigantic") - when she approached him and rudely asked for directions without greetings. her whole look kind of scared him, so he casually replied her and attempted to leave without providing further help. then she tried to attack him with her dark blue nails, that's when he saw the map directory right behind her back. so he thought she was really stupid and - was she trying to wear her entire wardrobe at once? ("seriously what is your problem with my fashion? they all appeared on vogue!")
how dayeon met soobin was a whole other story. she was supposed to meet a friend at the engineering building, at which soobin goes to classes. eventually she got a bit lost and a bit cranky, that's when she ran into soobin in the hallway. very nicely (she emphasised, "very nicely") she approached him and asked him for the directions, but since she was in a rush, she really didn't have the time for friendly small talks and just jumped right to the point. yet he in return, coldly replied a few words so fast that she couldn't even catch it. dayeon got offended and tried to grab his wrist, demanding him to repeat what he just said. to which, soobin pointed behind her and said, "there's a map directory, just so you know." herself aside, he has been the rudest person she has ever met who dared to treat her like that.
in short, both of them didn't make a very good impression on each other, and coincidentally, neither of them cared about that. eventually they found out about each other's names through their friends and social medias, and might exchange some hostile glares at the canteen, but it wasn't until the beginning of this year that they became truly connected.
the second time they met was at the economics building. soobin was there to meet his father, when he saw dayeon stumbled across outside the ladies' room in a slightly awkward posture in the middle of class hours. she was wearing a shiny silver onepiece, and the zipper somehow broke so her upper back is exposed to the air. dayeon blames the size of the toilet. out of everyone at yeongung, soobin had to be there witnessing some of her very rare embarassing moments.
"may i just ask, why are you dressing up like a disco ball to my dad's class?"
dayeon honestly didn't even know how could one sentence offend her on so many levels.
"your dad? you know what i'm not even in that seminar group and i'm not a ing disco ball you geek -"
anyways, soobin ended up lending her his blue jacket and according to dayeon, it was a disgusting blue colour. since his father's class would probably take a while to be over, he figured his might as well walk her back to her dorm to kill time. but to dayeon, such gestures from choi soobin was totally unexpected. on their way, they began talking about professor choi's classes - mostly dayeon complaining how strict he was - but it was pleasant overall, to both of their surprise.
and one thing led to another. as a thank-you, dayeon asked if soobin would like to get a cup of coffee the next day, and as dayeon likes to say, soobin "magically" agreed. she was just being polite (which doesn't happen very often) and did not even expect him to take it seriously. but he turned up at the campus coffee shop anyways, where they ran into professor choi. professor choi was truly intrigued and even chatted with them a bit, recognising dayeon from his class (because who wouldn't when you have a student treating every class like paris fashion week). dayeon, to this day, still believes it was soobin's tactic trying to sabotage her by giving her professor the impression that she's trying to make a move on his son.
ultimately, this chaotic friendship blossomed. soobin and dayeon surprisingly, had quite a few common interests such as horror films, sports and crime fictions. and of course, there was professor choi. choi soobin is one of the very, very few, who dared to disagree with dayeon and comment on her fashion style. dayeon hated to admit, but soobin was quite refreshing. no one really dared to banter that much with her, while in a way that she wouldn't feel too offended. soobin was witty and though a bit anti-social in dayeon's point of view, he was fun to have around as companion.
after really getting to know dayeon at a certain level, soobin realised that she was actually not as bad as he thought she would be - based on her quirky voice and rude manners at their first meeting. unlike other girls, dayeon was pretty candid about her thoughts and feelings, which made it comfortable and easy being around her. unknowingly, he was attached to her charisma, especially after seeing her a few times at her team trainings before they go get dinner or coffee. soobin could see that now, that kang dayeon just liked to pretend that she is bad to the bones.
choi soobin wanted to get to know the real kang dayeon. not the pretentious and shallow jock that everyone talked about around campus, but the kang dayeon without her guards. and that was when he knew he already fell for her. it was difficult to imagine himself falling for the type of girl he tended to steer away from the most, yet if it was kang dayeon, it made sense to him. so he began asking her out more often, so often that his dad at one point, questioned his purpose at the economics building. yet two months passed and there were no progresses in their relationship. dayeon seemed to not realise any of his moves and he wondered if he was being hooked. well, some of his best friends doubted if he even meant anything to the kang dayeon but they could all agreed that he was most definitely in love with her.
kang dayeon, on the other hand, was very cautiously stopping herself from having any feelings for soobin. if there were butterflies in her stomach, she would kill them. she had the perfect plan to end her university - going to prom with the perfect date in the perfect dress and maybe meeting her brother's mysterious boyfriend for the first time even. but entered choi soobin with his overwhelming existence in her life. she knew soobin had feelings for her, but she couldn't handle them right now yet she didn't want to lose him as a friend by turning him down. choi soobin could actually see through her and this thought frightened her. and she could never bring herself to hurt him and reject him, truthfully speaking. she even told him about her perfect prom date - well, she told him that while presenting her perfect prom proposal - yet soobin still seemed to be neglecting the subtle signs.
everyone automatically assumed they were a thing - because they would be spotted hanging out alone in a coffee shop and sometimes when dayeon's dorm mates passed by the windows, they would be shocked to see how dayeon's eyes actually had warmth and shimmer. but dayeon refused to talk about her love life and always brushed it off when people asked. because she herself still hadn't figured out how to define soobin and her relationship.
"we saw it, choi soobin is actually nice to you!" her dorm mates would have commented.
and dayeon replied, "yeah, you should've heard how he commented my lululemon outfit, try that."
"maybe he just didn't want to see you walking in a sports bra around the campus... you know, he might be jealous."
to this dayeon retorted, "and who is he to criticise anyway? karl lagerfeld?"
it wasn't until two weeks before the prom. it was a friday night and soobin made plans with dayeon to catch a highly rated horror film after dinner. soobin received a text from dayeon saying that she wasn't in the mood to do anything the evening so she wanted to call it off. but kang dayeon never missed a horror film and he planned to properly ask her to be his date for the prom that night. so he called her only to hear her picking up with a shaky and nasal voice. clearly she was trying to sound normal with her sarcastic comments but he could tell something was wrong.
the next thing he knew, he was standing outside the building of her dorm, asking her to come down and meet him. dayeon was pretty sure he wouldn't leave until she went down there. so she did. for the first time he saw her without the red lips and he didn't know if it was the plain black jumpsuit that made her really fragile. a word he never thought he would use on kang dayeon. that was the time he told himself he never ever want to see this girl getting hurt again.
"so uh, are you alright? what happened?"
dayeon shrugged, "nothing much. just you know, period cramps."
"i'd rather you tell me straight away that you don't want to talk about it than lying to my face, you know?"
eventually, he got her to start talking after a cup of tea sitting in a secluded park. he learned about her ex-boyfriend, how he cheated on her with her ex-best friend, and how he even had the audacity to ask her out again just now when he came to her campus with a box of chocolate. it was almost like, he didn't even know her. and dayeon had a mental breakdown just by looking at his face that reminded her of all the bad memories before.
"i don't know if i got more upset by him or by myself - that he haunted me so much, that i kept pushing sincere people away from me because of him."
dayeon looked straight into soobin's eyes, she never seemed to properly observe how good looking he was.
"if you just give them a chance to treat you well, like the way you deserve, maybe he'll stop haunting you."
"hmm," she hummed.
"well then dear dayeon-ssi, may i ask you to be my date to the prom instead of going with mr. perfect date?"
right, they've established park chul as mr. perfect date. calling him with his full name made it sound too real to happen.
"when you have decided to ask me out and confess to me later, can you pick a day when i'm properly dressed and without smudged eyeline?"
"hmm," he hummed.
she sniffed her nose a bit before chuckling, "you know, my parents might have to offer him an extra internship if we don't get him a new date soon. also, please let me buy you a brand new set of tuxedo to go the prom."
"wow, never thought i'd say this but i actually kind of miss your snarky tone."
and that was how they ended up going to the prom together. and yes, dayeon finally got to meet her brother's boyfriend with soobin. it was probably from the day soobin asked her out, dayeon began to see the world with another perception. she saw colours, and learned to appreciate the little things around her. she convinced herself that there are people like soobin, who treat others with a genuine heart. she used to say she feared nothing, while she was clearly afraid of getting hurt. now she doesn't. with baby steps, she learns to open up to people and build real relationships based on feelings instead of money. of course, sometimes she is still irritating and nasty, but at least people feel like they are connecting.

so here it is! i hope everything's ok and i hope you enjoyed reading about dayeon. i know you asked for character development but i think for dayeon, the most she could do is take baby steps to retrust people, in general, and begin building real friendships with people around her. she is still a princess at heart with her background and so on, so she's probably still a by the end of the story but with a good heart, maybe. but! let me know if you need any clarifications about her, and good luck to your story c:
