growing up, kwon seojin has always been told that she could've done better. with a pair of well-achieved parents who own a law firm based in incheon, both seojin and her sister suffered from immense stress and expectations from their parents. much like her sister, seojin strived to get flying colours during exams and actively participated in different extra-curricular activities to boost her resume. the lack of parental love seojin received was the reason why she has difficulties opening up to people and talk about her emotions when her parents were so result-oriented. no one really asked or cared what she really likes except for her sister. seojin's entire self-worth was built based on her own attainments and recognition from her parents, sowing the seeds of her insecurity complex later on.

 

the kwon parents thought they had a way of raising intellectual and outstanding kids when heejin and seojin brought home only with the best scores and scholarship, until their first disappointment came. during high school, seojin met her first boyfriend, choi daeyoung. he was charming, intelligent and caring. she kept her relationship hidden from her parents and it was a sweet and sour ride. until seojin found out that daeyoung had been cheating with one of her close friends for several months just before her college entrance exam. of course seojin messed up her csat. she went from snu medical school to hanyang business school. her parents were furious yet none of them was ever concerned about why she was so upset and distracted at all. since the betrayal of her ex-boyfriend and her close friend, seojin stopped caring and detached herself away from everyone. she built a fort around herself and vowed to never ever let anyone toy with her feelings.

 

not so long after, the kwon parents were faced with the second disappointment. her sister, heejin, decided to open her own yoga studio with her savings and a teaching license; instead of applying for law school like how it was planned. following her sister's footsteps, seojin began to go wild during university. she partied, got tattooed and got grades barely over the passing line - just enough for her to graduate. she discovered her passion for alcohol after spending a bit too much time in itaewon perhaps, and even received some modelling gigs for extra cash in case her grumpy parents cut her off seeing what a mess she became. later, seojin even gained internet popularity as an ulzzang with nice visuals. she got much more modelling jobs and slowly turned into an influencer on instagram. since then, seojin has become popular both around the campus and the nightclub she worked at.

 

the second scar came along in her third year of university. song kiho, who just finished his serving in the military that year, began his active and aggressive flirting a few days after their first encounter at class. he was determined and so charismatic, the 21-year-old seojin was not strong enough to reject kiho's affection. things were fine in the beginning, kiho took good care of her and pampered her well. until seojin, once again, was betrayed and scarred by infidelity. six months into the relationship with seojin, kiho cheated on her with some girls he picked up at the club. seojin had never felt so mugged and stupid overlooking all the signs. she promised herself that it would be the last time she would be hurt by someone so unworthy. seojin spent months drinking and partying to get over kiho. she knew she could get over him some days, but the scars would always remain and the damages had been done.

apparently, carter was relocated to seoul to work on a new project as a team leader. this time he was very certain about pursuing seojin properly over months of yearning and thinking about her after she left toronto. carter was unlike most of the guys she encountered. usually she attracts the type of charismatic, eloquent and confident alpha male in society, including her two ex-boyfriends who both cheated on her. carter, on the other hand, was a bit awkward but genuine. he was warm, caring and made her feel comfortable. perhaps it was because how different he is compared to the usual group of people she hangs out with, or it was simply because of his unique vibes. carter's affection for seojin was obvious and seojin, for the first time, felt safe to be herself around somebody.

❀ the way they realised carter and leon might be biologically related was based on their common rare blood type. seojin's blood type is a+, and both carter and leon have the rare ab rh- blood type. it started with carter sharing his trivial facts and emphasised the importance of staying healthy and safe. seojin then got suspicious and secretly did a dna parental test for carter and leon out of curiosity. later she revealed the positive results to carter, and they both felt fortunate to be able to reunite as a family before carter missed out more of leon's growth.
