PERSONALITY:

xuyao is a friendly dude, he gives off your cool uncle vibes. he's the leader of the makapu domestic forces and military. everyone knows him because even though he's old you gotta admit that he's hot and charming. whenever something happens in the village that has to be sorted out by the domestic forces all the girls lowkey hope he's the one that'll show up. no one ever has anything bad to say about him because he has a pretty good reputation, all he really does is help around whenever he can. he somehow knows everyone in the village by name.  he's used to all the attention because it was the same when he was younger, talking to others and making friends come easily to him. he likes to help others and spread the wisdom that he's learned to help them too. he might have a lot of girls around him but he never goes beyond playful flirting. 

when he cares for someone he really cares for them deeply, he'd risk his own life for the people he loves and will go very far just to prove his love for someone. if there's only one piece of food he rather give it to the other person than eat it himself. his caring nature doesn't make him naive though, he's actually really skeptical of people he doesn't know. anyone new to the village he greets them first trying to get a first impression. even though he's all smiles he's actually really judging you down to your mannerisms to see if you can be trusted or not. if he feels he can't trust you then he'll follow you around the village acting like he's just "checking up".

the xuyao behind his friendly exterior has a tendency to be obsessive. when he wants something he goes for it which can be seen in the extensive training that he does everyday. he isn't the type to give up easily. when he really wants something he becomes hyperfocused and won't break concentration for a long time. the reason he can train for hours on end. he neglects his own needs when he becomes like this, he won't eat until he's satisfied. aunt wu has had to convince him to take a break and eat or at least have some tea on many occassions. for now his obsessive nature isn't bad, but it isn't that far from turning unhealthy either.

BACKGROUND: 

xuyao was born october 28th in 59AG to a family of farmers in a small earth kingdom village. as a kid he had a simple life. there wasn't much opportunity for a good education since it was a small village. he was the only child and close to his parents, it was rare for there to be earth benders in his village but he was one of few which drawed a lot of attention to him. his friendly personality and bending made him a popular kid and everyone knew him.

he was one of two earth benders in his whole village and learned earthbending from the other who was a middle aged man named ming with a lot of knowledge. their town didn't have an army so ming started a school to train the kids of the town how to fight just incase. xuyao was like his assistant at the school and he learned hand to hand combat too. their town never had any issues with the fire nation so he ended up never using what he learned. by the time xuyao was 17 ming passed away. xuyao saw it as his duty to take over the training school so he did.  he never thought of leaving his town to pursue a higher education because everything he needed was in his village.

at 20 he finally got the courage to ask his childhood crush and best friend haiyun out. he had a happy life, a loving family, a beautiful girlfriend, and a job that he enjoyed. he got married to haiyun two years later and they had a stable realtionship but struggled with having a baby. haiyun miscarried 3 times before successfully giving birth to huiyin. the loss of babies put a strain on their relationship but they were still going strong and never even imagined splitting up. by the time huiyin was born xuyao was 25.

seven years later everyone is healthy and happy, huiyin is a bender like her father and haiyun is pregnant with another child. he really couldn't complain about his life at all, it was anything he could ask for until it wasn't. the worst thing possible happened when the fire nation came and to colonize their village. after seeing how poor they were they didn't see any value in colonizing it so they opted to destroying it instead. xuyao and his little army tried to fight back but the odds of nonbenders winning against a bunch of firebenders was low. the troop that came to colonize them were more immature and sloppy than he thought but still xuyao saw his army deplete in front of his eyes. it became harder to defend everyone in the village the more he fought and tired out.

from the side of his eye he saw his daughter try to use her earth bending to protect haiyun, before the soldier could attack her xuyao threw himself in front of the attack and got hit on his chest. as huiyin ran she only got so far before being captured by the leader who taunted xuyao as he was on the floor in pain. the last thing he remembered before passing out was huiyin screaming her fathers name getting dragged away by fire nation.

he woke up to silence and the remains of his burnt down village with everyone he knew and loved dead. he set out on his journey to find his daughter but after months of travel in the same direction he saw the fire nation go he was met with no luck. a local on an almost abandoned town told him that if they took his daughter she was most likely dead by now and he was starting to believe it himself. 

when he arrived in makapu village he looked like a total mess so the locals helped aid him back to health. he got a reading by aunt wu and she confirmed that his daughter passed away in the hands of the fire nation. at that point he completely lost hope and decided to stay there since it was safe from the fire nation.

it reminded him a lot of his old village, everyone was so kind and naive since they never had any trouble with the fire nation before. but xuyao was adamant on making sure they stayed safe so he did what he knew best and offered to teach others self defense. with his help makapu developed their own army that also worked as a domestic forces. it was compiled of both men and women training everyday incase the fire nation invades and to make sure the village is always at peace. 

there were barely any issues among villagers besides petty things or travelers stealing from shops but xuyao took his job way more seriously than before. was it necessary to train everyday? probably not but xuyao made it mandatory. just like his village makapu barely has any earth benders. but the few they do have he's extra tough on them when training pushing his soldiers past his limit.

in the mean time, xuyao was building up his own strength. he settled down slightly off from the village but not far, he needed the space to make a training area and have the farm that he had when he was younger. he became health conscious, growing his own food and avoiding the greasier or fattening dishes. he worked out and meditated everyday before and after training building his stamina and strength for the big day when the fire nation would attack.

makapu is next to a volcano and he remembered master ming tell him that some earth benders actually had the ability to lavabend. he never expected to but while he was meditating and focusing his energy downward, he felt a rumble underneath him that wasn't directly the earth but the volcanic lava underneath. after discoving his abilities he practiced hard to perfect it along with everything else. now with his soldiers, the lavabending and aunt wu's accurate fortunes for the village, he's more prepared than ever to kick some fire nation and has no plans of losing either.

☯ he's a light sleeper because he feels like he always has to be alert just incase

☯ he can read but not very well, most people can't even tell though because he seems smart either way. its something he's insecure about so he avoids reading like the plague 
☯ sometimes if he isn't satisfied with himself he'll work all night until he is satisfied so he overworks himself often
☯ he doesn't like seeing others mistreated and will stand up for the underdog no matter what
☯ he believes in keeping face so he only shows people what he wants them to see. the people of makapu actually don't know much about him except aunt wu

☯ he has strong alcohol tolerance but doesn't drink much because its bad for your body. he only drinks it when he feels overwhelmingly sad or something

☯ the way he teaches is very strict at the moment but loving after. like he'll make you do a bunch of reps then treat you to tea and good advice later   

RELATIONSHIPS:

master ming was a wise old man and earthbending instructor to xuyao. he was born in xuyao's tiny village but moved to ba sing se's lower ring at a young age where he learned earth bending and joined the military later becoming a member of the elite terra team. after his parents passed and years of serving he was returned back to his hometown to settle down and live a peaceful life. xuyao learned a lot from master ming thoughout his 12 years as his student. he gave him elite military training, taught him the importance of neutral jing and spirtuality. he's still grateful for master ming teaching him everything he knows and quotes some of his wise sayings still today.

hong and qing were good parents, they supported whatever xuyao did and taught him to be a good dude. he couldn't ask for better parents, they taught him all he knows about farming and chivalry shaping him to be the way he is. he still misses them and thinks about them today, especially when he's farming and cooking.

haiyun was his best friend that happened to end up his wife. he misses her everyday and refuses to move on from her though its been hella long already. he's never met someone that gives him the same feeling as her, so pure and full of love. she was supportive and understood him even when he overworked himself and buried himself in work.

there isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't think about huiyin. she used to be a serious daddys girl, loved learning earthbending from him and spending time together. part of him still wonders if she truly is alive and if he'll ever see her again but he suppresses that. its easier to think she's dead instead of alive living without him somehow. if he ever sees her again he thinks he'll have a loving reunion but her view of him might not be what he thinks.

aunt wu is his neighbor and one of the few people who live near him. shes one of the few people who knows the true xuyao, during his first fortune telling session she could tell he was deepy troubled even though he barely shows it. she knows all about his past that the rest of the village doesn't know and gives him a lot of advice that he always takes. they have a mutual care for each other, make sure to check up once in a while to make sure the other is okay.
