APPEARANCE nate is 175cm tall, quite an average height and, thanks to his genetics, has a healthy weight on him despite not eating much. he has long hair, almost reaching his shoulders, and whose top part he usually ties in a stylish ponytail. he used to have bright blonde hair but decided to dye it black for the new school year. his right arm is covered by a tattoo sleeve made out of watercolor tattoos representing swirls and flowers.

STYLE
he doesn't give a single flying about his fashion. his style is plain : simple colors, usually light tones (white, beige, pastel colors), no patterns, skinny jeans. when in class, he usually wears black clothes, just in case they get stains on them. also, one of his favorite top is a shirtless black top. he's so used to cover his arms with the chef jacket that he likes showing off his arms and tattoos when he can.
he got into the habit of not wearing any kind of jewelry (he actually doesn't like it). however he does wear make up every day (if he doesn't, it means he's dead tired and you should be worried about him). the boy got way too much into kpop make-up and now likes experimenting - though he always wears natural or discreet make-up when he goes to class.

nathan is a bundle of joy and kindness. what people say about him most of the time is that he's a source of inspiration. despite his baby face, he is dedicated, focused and precised. he's also kind to others, always smiling, always polite - though he doesn't let just anyone close. he's known to be a very creative person, he's really good at thinking outside the box and he loves learning new stuff. you can count on him to know the weirdest trivia ever.
meeting him for the first time is always shock : you'll see a cute eyesmile, an adorable baby face - and the moment he opens his mouth, you'll hear a super deep voice swearing like a sailor. you're in for a shock ! yet it's a good representation of him. when you see him for the first time, he looks very kind but he's a bit cold and secretive. but when he accepts you as a friend, you'll see a cuddlebug. he likes playing hard to get, faking being cold and acting tough but he loves attention. he loves his friends too much, he lets them steal the food he cooks without hitting them too hard (that's a proof of love right ?). he's loyal to fault and he tends to be a bit jealous with his friends. he doesn't like having people get too close to his loved ones, especially with his boyfriend. he trusts his friends but he is always jealous of people he doesn't know.
he doesn't get angry easily, however he can get a bit snappy when he's frustrated. if he ever snaps at you, just know he's angry at himself, and he'll feel guilty immediately after that. he's also someone who doesn't fall asleep easily but when he does, you could try anything, he won't wake up. he's a very heavy sleeper.
when it comes to work, to his studies, to anything he has to do in general, he doesn't like having limits. he will gives everything to reach his goals. he's extremely hardworking and always critical with himself. he can't help searching for perfection even though nothing is perfect and he beats himself up if he fails. he tends to push himself too hard, more often than not without realizing it. he was pampered a lot when he was a child, so he thinks the only way to prove himself to always push harder even if it hurts. one of his main problems is that he doesn't talk about his problems. he has no problem talking about his feelings but when it comes to troubles, he always keeps to himself. if he doesn't want to bother his friends or if he feels that he should be able to do it alone, he doesn't know himself. however, he keeps everything bottled up until it explodes (and by exploding it could be a a river of tears or his body giving up).
BACKGROUND
nathan was born as the youngest son of a big family. being the only boy out of four siblings meant that he truly was their little baby. his three older sisters (currently 26, 32 and 35) always protected him just as much as they . all in all, they were a pretty chill family, they were all very close. they liked traveling as well, so after living in canada for a while, they settled in alaska when he was 6.
he grew up surrounded by nature and woods, them being not much of a tech family, he spent his childhood running around rather than watching television. he liked playing with animals and snow in general. his family owned a dog sled company and had a kennel. they used to sell dog sled tours and classes, they were (and still are) a pretty famous tourist attraction in juneau.
his sisters left when he was 9, so he grew up mostly with his third sister. his father was the cook at home and he loved cooking with him. his teenage years were spent going to school and coming back home to cook and experiment. he had always been fascinated by cooking shows and loved watching his father cook.
when his sister left for san francisco, he immediately felt lonely. high school came to an end and he didn't know what to do. his parents never pressured him to do anything but he himself felt the pressure and felt like he had to take over the business. he didn't want his parents to have done this for nothing. as he was a year ahead of his grade, he graduated a year early and went to college to get a degree in business and accounting in ucsf. it took a couple of weeks for him to realize he absolutely hated it. in between exams and essays, cooking was his only way to relieve the stress. his parents quickly figured out that something was wrong with him and in the end, they convinced him to follow his dreams.
with the help of the administration, he switched departments to join the culinary arts major and loved it. there, his hardwork really kicked in. it was really hard. he spent hours and hours working because he wanted perfection. he would barely sleep to read as much as he could, would use the dorm's kitchen to perfect his craft until the wee hours of the morning. the results showed as he finished the 1st year and 2nd year easily with top grades, but he was slowly crumbling down without realizing he. he lost a lot of weight to the point of being underweight, was barely sleeping or going out. everyone around him started to worry but he brushed it aside, focused on his work. in his third year, he didn't realize he was overworking himself to exhaustion until the last final of fall semester. he was hot, too hot and the flames of his banana flambé blurred his vision. one moment he was standing and the next, everything was black - he had collapsed.
the result of this was that he had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. exhaustion, malnutrition, anxiety got he best of him. after a mountain of worries, he got a meeting with his friends to get scolded, then with his teachers to get scolded again. they taught him that a chef has to be the best but also has to be a good manager of his team and himself. with the help of his friends, he got back on track. his credits got transferred and he had to retake a few classes during summer semester so as to pass, and also to be given time to rest. he took the entire month of august to go back to his family and rest so as to start his final year the best he can.

* ok so, funny story. don't pull on his ponytail. here's why. he hardly blushes and apart from his boyfriend jacob, only leo managed to get him to blush and he still teases him with it. in first year, one evening, he was cooking alone in the dorm's kitchen. he was daydreaming of jacob while letting his sauce thicken when leo arrived behind him and grabbed his ponytail and pulled it to scare him. nathan let out the filthiest moan he ever let out and when he realized what he had happened, he went beet red while leo was wheezing of laughter. obviously, the other boy , how he understood now why he kept his hair long, which made nate blush even harder if it was possible. of this resulted a full semester of free homecooked meal and a promise of keeping it a secret. leo likes mentioning it once in a while to which earns him a deathly glare.
FOOD TRIVIA
* for a cooking major, his eating habits are the worst. he doesn't eat much and actually tends to forget about putting food in him. he needs to be reminded of it every now and then. and when he does eat, he eats like five grown men.
* the only food he hates is pineapple.
* he prefers sweet flavors over savory flavors.
* his favorite thing ever is chocolate-covered marshmellos. don't ask why. if you want to get a favor from him, bring him some and he'll do it.
* he likes blasting 80s songs when he cooks at the dorm. that's usually the signal the whole corridor waits for to know when to go and try to get fed.
* the best way to anger him is to mess with his ingredients. once, leo replaced sugar by salt while nathan was cooking and he didn't notice (he was focused and didn't expect a prank). obviously, the cake he was baking turned to be disgusting and when nate realized what happened, he was furious. it took literally two months and a lot of chocolate gummies for nate to talk to his friend again.
MAJOR culinary arts
SCHEDULE
What a best way to start a week than with sweets ? His Mondays are usually dedicated to sugar. He has a class on French Pastries in the morning from 9am to 12pm. His afternoon changed each week. The first week, he has classes from 2pm to 5pm. During the first week, from 2pm to 7pm, he has full-on 5 hours dedicated to chocolate and/or sugar. His class is called the Art of Chocolate and is dedicated to the preparation of chocolate both in desserts and in actual art sculpture. This part is only during the second week as chocolate sculptures actually need a lot of time.
His Tuesdays and Wednesdays are more peaceful. He has no classes on Tuesday morning, but he has Business Management from 1pm to 3pm and Beginner French classes from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. On Wednesday mornings, he has a Gourmet Course class from 8.30am to 12pm, while his afternoon is dedicated to his minor Asian Cuisine from 2pm to 5pm.
His Thursdays are free, he has no classes, while his Fridays are dedicated to his final year project, a Research Lab/Kitchen open from 8am to 9pm with teachers available. For his final year, he has to figure out the entire menu of a luxury restaurant and his final will be him actually serving as a chef in a restaurant rented by the university. He will have one night to serve his menu and manage his team, basically to see if he could manage a kitchen during a busy night.
COLLEGE LIFE
He didn't join any frats or clubs, he doesn't really have time to. He used to be part of a basketball club but left when he changed major. Each Saturday and Sunday, he goes to his sister's café to work on his creations and she puts them on her menu. He get a percentage of his sales and gets job experience, so it's all good for him ! Once a month, he volunteers at a shelter not far from the city - it's his only full break and he likes bringing friends once in a while.
His free days are... something else. His major requires a lot from him, especially Monday afternoons with the sculptures. On the following Tuesdays, he always sleeps like a log and his friends know not to bother him because he needs the rest. On the other Tuesdays, he likes going out and meeting his friends on campus. On the other hand, his Thursdays are dedicated to having fun, playing video games and going out. The only time he doesn't go out on Thursdays is if he has a teacher coming as an examinator on Friday or if he failed something the previous week (and he's too anxious to go out, he's focused on fixing his mistake). His final year is stressing him out so seeing his friends and boyfriend are the only way for him to take a break.
Honestly, he likes staying home and he always complains when his friends drag him out but he doesn't really fight it. He tried during the previous year and it didn't work, so now he just lets his friend drag him out to take a breath !
Nathan lives with a roommate in a dorm room on campus. His room is just on the opposite side of the corridor of Leo's room.

SISTERS #1 & #2
tiffany jang & sophie jang
being the youngest sibling in a set of four, especially the only boy, was definitely not easy. he was a little prince yes, but there were also a lot of expectations on him. his two oldest sisters, tiffany and sophie, were spent the least time with him. they age difference was quite big and they had their own lives : they were already teens when he was born. they grew up close enough though and the two ladies always made sure to coddle their baby brother and be there for him. though with time, both left to start their own careers and their own families and now they don't speak that much with each other and only meet for family meetings.
SISTER #3 (THE BEST ONE)

ellie and nathan grew up to be very close, being the closest in age of the family. they share the same hobbies, though definitely not the same personality. ellie is a soft person, she's kind and gentle. despite that, they're almost like best friends. ellie really looks after him like a mother would and she checks on him every so often to make sure he's okay. she's been his biggest supporter and that's why she got him to work at soft fluff coffee shop. her boss (her fiance) focused his business mostly on original and cheap drinks, so food is a plus for him. nate loves her very much and is very grateful to her.
TASTE TESTER
leo park
they met when they were in first year. basically, leo was awakened by the smell of warm pancakes and maple syrup. he followed the enticing smell to find nate and jacob chatting in the kitchen while eating the breakfast nathan was making them. after seeing the guy literally drool, nate took pity and offered him a plate with pancakes with a raised eyebrow : "eat up, dude, and dry yourself, you're ing disgusting". despite that... awkward first meeting, the call of food got leo to come back every day for (hopefully more food) some time with the boys. they quickly became friends as leo's carefree and joyful attitude became a breath of fresh air in nate's packed days. leo became his official taste tester and he absolutely loves teasing the hell out the nervous cook when he tried his meals for the first time. when things got tough, leo was of a tremendous help to help nathan relax and have fun. regarding his project, nathan usually doesn't like being the focus of the videos but he doesn't mind being included. he just ignores it and plays along, mostly.

those two had a bad start, let's be honest. and to be fair, it's weird considering they both have strong and similar personalities. for some reason, being so similar didn't help get close because they both were snarky and clever enough to push exactly the right buttons to annoy each other. yet in a way, having someone who would banter with them and actually push them was a great catharsis and they grew to like this relationship. this weird hate blossomed into an awkward but sincere friendship. they don't talk much, just the two of them, but they actually understand each other very well, both feeling that their majors is draining them but wanting to do their best. after nate's burn out, this understanding grew stronger. he doesn't want her to ever experience that and she wants to make sure he doesn't feel it again. they're a pillar they go to when things get tough.
BOYFRIEND
jacob 'jay' jeon
they met in first year when they were assigned as roommates. they hit it off pretty quickly and became really close. honestly, their story is a straight (or not) out of a drama. both had a crush on the other but didn't dare confessing, not wanting to ruin their friendship and not even knowing if the other was attracted to guys. yet jacob had enough and just confessed, and the rest is history. they started dating in 2nd year and became a disgustingly sweet couple. just like his sister, the boy worries like a mom and felt guilty that he couldn't stop nathan in his self-destructive ways. he saw the brute force of his burn-out and did everything he could to help. he decided to stop being roommates during their winter semester for the sake of meeting new people and actually going out of their nest. the boys don't like pda but they usually show the cutest affections without realizing it when their friends are around.
ROOMMATE

they've met each other thanks to leo and juno and have been friends for a good while. this person is probably the one nate feels the closest to amongst their team, they share the same general hobbies and like hanging out. his roommate volunteered to take over jacob after he moved out. t was awkward at first but the awkwardness disappeared quickly. they made it a mission to force nate out of his room when he's been in for too long, and also make sure that the boy gets enough rest. they like hanging out together even without the others. nate also had to promise not to do dirty stuff in the dorm, to which he replied "don't worry, you'll never notice".
INTERVIEW

"so today i'll show the perks of being friends with a cooking student."
"a cooki-- it's called a culinary student you dip!"
nate glares at leo while the senior smiles dumbly at the camera. he sees himself in the video and makes a timid wave before focusing on his eggs. he kind of tunes out leo to focus on his chat with juno, who ignores the other boy as well. she watches curiously how he prepares his omelet while leo is describing the scene and talking about how they got to taste nathan's creations first.
"so nate!" the latter jumps at the sudden voice in his ear and looks awkwardly at leo, at the camera and at leo again.
"yeah?"
"what you doing ?"
"hm, well right now i'm making sure my eggs are creamy and don't burn."
he explains for a couple minutes exactly what he's doing. juno smirks. the dude usually doesn't care at all about the camera, just smiling and waving at it every now and then, but the moment cooking is mentioned in one of leo's videos, nate just turns into a real chef full of passion. by the end of the video, nate presents the finished plate to the camera.
"and here is a chicken curry omurice !" he smiles brightly to the camera, his eyesmile on display, making leo laugh.
"well, let's see if it tastes good !"
"of course it tastes good, ."
leo ignores the glare and takes a spoonful in his mouth. two seconds later, he hurriedly looks at the camera.
"so that was the perk of being friend with a cooking student!"
